Dr. Pawl and his staff, Stephanie, Christy and April are the best. They welcome you with a smile as if you are a long, lost friend. I've had alot of experience with many dentists over my lifetime. Professionalism and a caring attitude. I guess these are the two traits that you would seek out when looking for someone that deals with your health, Going to a dentist is not like going to a movie. I get that, but if you are seeking a practice where people know what they are doing, do it well and treat people in a friendly manor than look no further. I had a root canal done yesterday. No drama on my part and that's a good thing. Lack of drama has to do with the fact that I know and trust the man. No pain during the procedure or later in the evening or the next morning. Dr. Pawl and his staff are by far the best I have ever dealt with. From scheduling to cleanings I am always beyond satisfied when I leave. Since I am now in my mid twenties I have decided to take care of my teeth more in depth, and I am so glad that I chose to do it here. I had a chip in one of my front teeth that had worsened over the past ten years so I finally made the decision to do something about it. Dr. Pawl suggested that replacing my four front teeth with lumineers would not only repair the chipped tooth, but improve my smile by showing more teeth and increase the strength in them because they were pretty thin/small. This has been the best decision ever! My teeth match perfectly and look as if they were my regular teeth (pre-chipped) but wayyy better! He and his assistant Linda are true perfectionists at what they do and I felt so comfortable throughout the whole process. UNFORTUNATE EXPERIENCE After reading reviews of Dr. Pawl and office staff, which office is fairly close to my neighborhood, I decided to go and have some deferred repair work and cosmetic work done. My husband was going to have some done, as well as my daughter and her family. We were all excited to go. I set the appointment and made sure there was now time and thousands of dollars in cash available to do all this. When my husband and I eagerly arrived early to fill out forms and bringing past history, we not greeted by the staff as the reviews indicated. That was not really a consideration at that time. When I met Dr. Pawl, he was delightful. He was efficient, had up to date equipment, apparently knew the latest techniques in cosmetic work. After the xrays and exam and other, we (the doctor and me) were ready to proceed. An appointment was made to start the extensive work after the weekend. I thrilled to start it quickly and finish it as soon as possible. If time had permitted, I would have started more that day. I had brought several thousand dollars cash and certified funds in my purse just in case. The front office rang up the bill, I paid it in cash, and was quite happy. Then she started in talking, trying to explain some supposed discount, and stopping trying to compose herself, turning her eyes down, and rambling. I couldn't understand anything she was saying. She was speaking fluent English, but nothing she said, and the numbers she was quoting didn't relate to anything that she had given to me. I was content with everything, okay with all the pricing, future billing, etc. I was very tired and my husband who had been waiting all this time was also very tired. We just wanted to go home and would be back after the weekend. She keep talking more.. It was as if she was insecure, not confident in what she was saying, confused, "was protesting too much." "defensive" for no reason. I asked her a couple of questions, but still nothing she was saying was related to anything on paper she had given us. Now, she was making me suspicious as to why she felt she had to say certain things. She kept on. My husband had been listening and he, too, became suspicious. At that point, it was if there was some wall/fog/ something going on, just didn't know what. We were extremely tired, and made the decision to cancel the Monday appointment which had just been made, and make it for another day, when things might be clearer. Something did just not feel right. My husband and I did other things for a few weeks, and would get back to this project soon. I called back and Dr. Pawl answered. It was nice to hear his cheerful voice. I told him briefly about why I had been in, was now ready to proceed with the project and would make an appointment whenever available except Tues and Wednesdays. He was delightful and said that his 'girls' would call me back the next day with an appointment. The next day I received a call from Dr. Pawl, not the 'girls', and he reported that the 'girls' had said something about me feeling like I was being 'swindled'. That was furthest from the the truth. He then got hostile, disgusting in his tone. I was pretty shocked. Obviously, there was some problem, the problem is that I did not know what it really was, and with his tone, it wouldn't make any difference in whatever I said. DR Pawl and his staff are your best bet when it comes to your teeth and oral health. They're one of the few people I've ever seen that actually look for cancer from inside your mouth and throat and have the equipment to go beyond just a visual inspection. If it is possible their staff as well as the doctor almost make your visits fun or at least relaxing. read more

I've been to more dentists in my life than I care to count and I have never felt as comfortable and cared for as I do when I see Dr. Pawl. His staff welcomes you with cheery smiles and genuine attention and immediately your nerves are eased. I went to Dr. Pawl on referral from my co-worker so I was unaware of his reputation as "The Smoothest Anesthesia Administer in the West!" (Okay I made that title up) But seriously you don't feel A THING when he administers the anesthesia and that is like the 7th wonder of the world in my opinion :) Your whole appointment he and his staff will make sure you are comfortable and being verbally walked through every procedure performed. He really takes into consideration what it feels like to be the patient, which isn't always the case with other dentist. From the moment you arrive, to the moment you check out at the front you are cared for, heard and left feeling happy & hopeful about your smile. Go to Dr. Pawl, and if you have family, friends that need a referral- tell them too. I believe this review has been a long time coming. You see I have worked with Dr. Pawl for about 18 years. Lol I can honestly say I worked with Dr. Pawl when I still had teeth. In fact if my insurance had not changed, and I tried another dentist, I would probably still have teeth. I've had problems with the health of my teeth all of my life and it was a struggle. Dr. Pawl referred me to get braces on 2 back molars instead of pulling them to be able to fit a partial. When the time came to have dentures. Dr. Pawl did 4 root canals and added comings under the denture so my face would not lose bone and I would not look older. The dentures I received in his office were wonderful and the care from Dr. Pawl and he staff is remarkable. I have never found a dental service the could even come close to the kindness, sincerity and professional care. I can say this because I got my first set of dentures with Dr. Pawl and it was an almost painless procedure and the dentures were excellent quality. When my insurance changed the new dentist pulled out all of the work Dr. Pawl had done to save my bone loss. Made new dentures that did not even last 2 years. My face changed drastically even though the new dentist told me my bone would not recede very fast. I was devastated. I went back to Dr. Pawl crying and he reclined and fixed the horrible dentures. Just so you know I actually walked out of the new dentist office right in the middle of the appointment. No personal care. I call it cattle drive, they get you in take your money push you out. I can't even remember what the dentist looks like and I saw him for a few months. They walk in and out and other people take care of you. I was spoiled because with Dr. Pawl, you know him and he knows you. Since I started with his dental office his staff has changed. I still know each and everyone of them by name. Personal, genuine customer service. So last Octobeer 2018, I moved to Los Angeles County. Went to big time Dental Office for new dentures. $7500.00. I went in May 1st and by July 3rd received something I would wear for Halloween. Then had to fight for my money. Review is here on Yelp Downey Dental Arts. Who do I call for help? Dr. Pawl and immediately even though I can't drive to San Diego to his office, he listens to my son story and is sending me referrals that he supports. He personally talks to me and tells me when I call tell them he told me to call. I guarantee you can not do better than Dr. Pawl and his staff. I never waited more than 2 days for new dentures. Any problems they were fixed. Another big issue, Dr. Pawl would never charge that much for the service I got. Prices are very reasonable even without insurance. I miss them so much, I am literally trying to think of a way to actually go to San Diego and continue to work with them. I mean a couple of days, 2 1/2 hour drive. How often do you go to the dentist. Even if he supports the referrals it is not Dr. Pawl. I started with him when I was 42 years old, lol I just turned 60. He has become my friend. I was frustrated with my previous dentist not wanting to treat my cavities. I called this office and talked to Stephanie she understood what I need for and she immediately schedule an appointment even though there are patients ahead of me. She made it happen just for me. When Dr. Larry Pawl gave me an assessment. I'm kind of didn't understand, But Dr. Pawl was really patient enough to give me sometimes with Stephanie and explained more about the procedures. I really like Dr. Pawl such a very understanding doctor. One thing he is make sure that he is doing a right thing for me. And I'm still on the process to get it rid of my cavities. But he is honest enough to tell me that I need to see Endodontics if I need a root canal. After that he will take care of the rest for me, when everything is ready. The staff (front & tech) are extremely helpful, competent, friendly & efficient. No waiting. Dual insurance billing was a breeze for them. No pain in the chair. Great education from staff. My family and I have been patients of Dr,Pawl's for more than 10 years. We have 2 adults, 1 child who has become an adult. Now our 40 something son (from another state) and his 8 year old daughter are also patients. Dr. Pawl is the most wonderful dentist-EVER! His staff is wonderful; they are concerned, caring, comforting, helpful. Today while I was waiting for my appointment an elderly genteman with a very thick accent came in asking about "medicare" or "medical".. Stephanie asked if there was an" immediate problem they could help with?" He said he didn't think so but he still asked for assistance. She gave him a current list of providers. he asked her about "fixes" and she explained: "generally their fix is extraction and almost anything else is out of pocket." He didn't have his glasses with him and asked Stephanie to highlight certain localities. Most likely they will never see the gentleman again, but you could not discern that from her attitude or concern for his well-being. As a consumer, as a senior citizen, I love that type of treatment. Frequently you don't get that type of attitude from a NON-provider of medicare or medical dentistry. I know this for a fact. My husband has been diabetic for 20 +years; he suffered medical abuse from a dental provider in La Mesa; that is how and why we originally went to Dr. Pawl. He, we have never had a 'negative' issue either health wise or dental wise. This is so important to diabetics, especially as they age...this is a key to long=term health. Love these people! I cannot stress enough the peace of mind we have, and the superior dental care, nor our appreciation for them as people. They are, really, the best "dental team' around! I have never had a great dental appointment before, and I look very forward to seeing everyone at Dr. Pawl's office again. You are made to feel right at home, just as if you are a family member.
