Called the shop looking for help with warranty on a set of True skates. The person who answered the phone was friendly and happy to help. unfortunately I thought I was calling True MFG And I live in Calgary. Even with zero to gain the employee went out of his way to find me the phone number for True Hockey and told me if I can't get anywhere with that number to call him back and he would get his True hockey sale rep involved. Avoid. The owner/operator Danny Longo is a like a used car salesman. In fact, if he were a car salesman, he'd be one of the most dishonest. Rumour has it he tried to sell some old phone books to a customer looking for goalie pads. Nothing has a price tag either. This sends off alarm bells in any establishment I go to. You really need to know your products before going there. You can't trust the sales staff to give you honest advice, they seem to push the high end products regardless of what you are needing. I custom ordered a goalie glove there, and nobody sent the order to the manufacturer. I ended up waiting 4 months when I was quoted 6 weeks. Overrall, very disappointed both times I shopped there. So this review is the culmination of 3 major transactions with Danny (over the phone, email and in person) at Larry's. The first 2 orders were custom jerseys for an inline team. For the first order, I did my due diligence and shopped around at the various hockey/jersey shops in the Lower Mainland. To be honest I didn't think to go to Larry's because of the location (I try to avoid the North Shore when possible because of potential traffic issues). But a friend of mine insisted on asking for Danny at Larry's as he swore by him. He mentioned that he used Larry's for existing jerseys, and he always takes care of long-time customers. So I found myself emailing Larry's to see what Danny could do for my particular order. I mentioned my friend, and right away he was able to recall what he had done (even after 5+ years had passed for the order) He asked me for the exact specs on the jerseys that I wanted, and a few emails and phone calls later he came to the absolute best price in the city. As I fell under a few requirements for bulk orders, he said he'd take care of it on his end. 10 weeks later and the jerseys I get were even better than what I mocked up. He upgraded a few items (small things like numbers and lettering) without me knowing and at the lower price-point. At that point they had a future repeat customer. Fast forward a year, and the inline team wants alternate colours. So I gave Danny a call, and in 2 minutes he got the team file and asked for the exact specifics of the order. I sent it to him (around September), and 3 months passed with no jerseys. Danny called me back and said they were on the way from the jersey place. However, when I picked them up, they were incompletely done. As annoying as it was, Danny said he'd fix everything. A week later, everything came back just as I ordered. A small hiccup in this order, but Danny did everything to fix it in less than a week. And for my most recent order- I called Danny up to see what he had for pricing on goalie leg pads. After talking to his suppliers, he came back with, again, the best price in the city. I didn't hesitate to order from him this third time, and after a bit of back and forth on the phone, I have everything that I want in a custom pad for an awesome deal. ****************************** I want to address a few things on the other reviews. Danny's "customer approach" does near "car-salesman". I know and agree because I felt that way after my first chat with him. But after dealing with him for 2 years, I've found that he really does know his stuff and, more importantly, takes care of his repeat customers. There are price tags on the merchandise, contrary to one review. They don't stock as much as competitors, but the prices are there and are competitive (though usually higher). Just bring up a cheaper price, and they price match it without hesitation. And heading in the back you see a ton of "jerseys" from many of the beer-league teams in the area. It was actually shocking to see how many teams I recognized because they all came from the same place. As for the sharpenings- they default on a 3/8s which is deathly sharp. Perhaps they should move it down to 1/2, but they do have some of the best sharpeners in the city (I've personally seen some ex-NHLers in the store getting their kids' as well as their own skates done). It honestly helps to tell the sharpener what you want in a hollow. It's good habit regardless of what shop you go to, since you don't know what hollow they default to. Lastly- my review isn't all praise: Their website SUCKS big time and needs to be completely overhauled in order to just catch up to the other local hockey shops. Not everyone can move the volume that bigger stores can do, but a better website can do wonders for bringing traffic into the store (and not just in a "do you have this item in stock" capacity). I have been going to Larry's Sports Shop for about 10 years now and they have made great strides to assist me and my fill my orders every time I go in. The staff has bent over backwards every time making sure my orders are right the first time and that any warranty problems that they are authorized to handle are dealt with immediately. I do custom gear quite a bit, occasionally jerseys so this is very important to me. When I first started to going to Larry's in 2003 I was a bit put off by what I had heard about the shop in the hockey community, but I had all those notions dispelled and I have never looked back. Danny and Andrew have been very good to me and all my friends who shop there, they know our orders, our needs and even future needs. Danny is big on customer loyalty and the store has never disappointed me in what they offer and how they do it. They also always come to me with the lowest price around for my orders on both goalie and players gear and I have always done my comparison shopping. Larry's Sports Shop is yet to be beat in my books, so much so that I have even recommended them to my friends overseas Australia who play hockey (yes Australians play ice hockey a fair bit) for their team orders. I'm ok with the over priced products at Larry's, but their horrible service makes me never want to come back here. I've purchased s pairs of skates, and my goalie pads here (two separate occasions) and every time I feel like I've been cheated and lied to. Bauer XXX skates are NOT their top of the line skates and not worth $450 retail. Goalie pads are NOT one size fits all, and these $1000 goalie pads are way too big for me. As a novice hockey player, I rely on a store to give me reasonable advice and recommendations but Larry's will do anything to get a sale, and let you feel like a fool afterwards. read more

So this is my first review on Yelp, felt compelled to sign up to give a huge thanks to Danny at Larry's for the excellent service provided over the last few weeks! My son needed new 'pro goalie pads', and after checking with all the main stores, we chose Larry's based on the service provided and very competitive pricing! We got very good help in maneuvering through CCM's customizer and placing the order. Not a simple task as there are hundreds of options... Danny has since been following up w CCM, and today the new CCM E-Flex II pads, glove and blocker arrived, a few days ahead of schedule. Needless to say my son is very excited to get on the ice with the new gear tonight to start breaking it in! You're not going to find a more personal shopping experience in and around Vancouver. Larry's isn't a huge chain, it's a family run business and has been for decades. Larry himself is often there though long retired and his sons now run the place. Between myself and my son we've bought about 10 full sets of goalie gear over the years. I can quote them a price from a competitor and often they'll meet or beat it. If they don't have it on the shelf they'll get it. If you don't know what you're doing they'll help you. If you do, you can still learn something there. Free parking out front and in the back. They also do online and over-the-phone orders. I went to Larry's two days ago at the recommendation of a friend. I can't believe I hadn't been there sooner, having lived on the North Shore for seven years now. I'm so glad I did. This store is excellent! I recently started playing hockey again after a 5 year hiatus and am relatively new to the Vancouver area. I had no idea where to shop for new equipment in the city, but had always shopped at Sport Check or other big box stores in my previous city. I always hated how those stores essentially leave you to fend for yourself in their aisles and aisles of equipment. A friend of mine recommended Larry's Sports to me to help 'refresh' some of my older equipment. Danny the owner/operator can be a bit overwhelming at times, but he is reasonable and willing to price match with competitors. I find they carry the perfect range products and have the knowledge to suggest the right gear for any level of player. The technical team is extremely professional and works with their clients to sharpen skates to whatever specification they may need. Personally they have gone above and beyond to customize may skates, and have on a number of occasions come up with creative solutions to repair my damaged gear. Since I usually order custom sets of Brian's gear I deal with Danny frequently. I have always found him to be helpful and ready to assist directly with the manufacturer with any concerns I have had. I'm an advanced goaltender, and I play a hard agressive style with lots of overdrives and butterfly slides. I'm not that tall compared with other tenders (5'8") so I rely on my athletic abilities, coaching and well sharpened skates to keep me positionally sound. I had to learn by trial and error what worked and what didn't in the sharpening world. I used to think most skate sharpening was the same, but it's not. I'm picky about how my skates are done. So over the last couple seasons, I've had Franco at Larry's sharpen them for me. I specify flat (very minimal rocker), even (ie/ not high inside), 1/2" hollow, only a single pass on the front and the back at the end of the sharpening, and edges stoned. Consistently he has given me amazingly sharp and smooth edges. I get my skates done about once a week. What I'm trying to say is you must specify how you like your skates done, and develop a relationship with one person at the shop to do your skates so they know you and your preferences. Each person is different. Maybe getting someone to profile your blades will be beneficial. I am very happy with Franco's sharpening at Larry's. read more
