I could sum up my experience in one word: Salty. Las Aves came highly recommended by some locals, so I placed a takeout order through their website last night for Americano ground beef tacos, no tomatoes, and added sides of chips, queso, crema, and 4 oz. rice. My order total was roughly $20 after taxes, tip, and a random $1 online ordering fee. Since I added so many sides, I decided to check on my order when I picked it up. The sides were correct, except I erroneously ordered queso fresco instead of queso blanco (womp), but the tacos were covered in tomatoes. They corrected it and made me fresh tacos in just a few minutes, which I appreciated. My first bite into the tacos tasted like pure salt. Unfortunately, they didn't get any better. They were also pretty greasy, and my stomach wasn't a huge fan by any means. I ordered them with hard shell tacos, which was an upcharge, and they tasted way overcooked. All told, I just didn't enjoy the dish. The chips were extra salty too. I heard the rice was good though. I'm probably being generous with a 3-star rating, but I'm hoping it was just a bad night for them. It does seem like this spot is hit or miss based on other reviews here. I wouldn't be opposed to trying them once more on a future trip to Jersey, maybe next time I'll do a sit-down dinner, as their dining space looked quite nice and they even had outdoor seating too. read more

I have to say, I'm a little disappointed because the first time I came here I really enjoyed it, but the second time was not so great. I don't know if they're frying things too long or their oil is just old but everything; chips, tacos, etc. came out oily and tasted off. I could only eat one of the birria tacos. Definitely feel like I'm going to get indigestion tonight . It's also clear that the guacamole is store bought. It has the lemony/lime preservative taste. It's such a shame because it's not hard to make homemade guacamole and I feel like if the ingredients here were just a bit fresher, it would go further. Very disappointed in the lack of communication while waiting to be seated. The sign says "Please wait to be seated," but no one acknowledged us or gave any idea how long the wait would be. They finally sat the family ahead of us after wiping down one table for them, even though there were other tables that could've been wiped down at the same time to seat us as well. While we were still standing there with no acknowledgment, that same family had already been served drinks and had their order taken. How can you take orders and serve tables while leaving people standing there without even a simple acknowledgment? After about 15-20 minutes with no communication, we decided to leave. Not sure if they're short-staffed or just won't pay for extra servers or someone to greet and seat guests, but it made for a very frustrating experience. Please hire more staff. Found this place after visiting Dalton Farms. They have an innovative take on traditional Mexican. The Brussel sprout tacos were delicious, as were the chorizo shrimp; however, the elote was lacking the mayonnaise and a real bite of chile while being heavy on the lime. The churros, not pictured were hard and excessively covered in cinnamon. The chips and salsa were good though. Definitely worth a try, but stick with the tacos. read more

The food was good and the portions were large. I ordered a nacho grande and had enough for at least two people. There is a small salsa bar with 4 kinds of salsa. What a great dinner! The food was beyond our expectations, our server Trexlor was very personable and welcoming. The nachos were a tower of tasty tortilla chips smother with at least 3 different cheeses, beef, jalapeños, Pico and guacamole. This was definitely a dish to be shared. The tacos were another great choice. I had the spicy chorizo and shrimp that had the corn tortillas stuffed with meat, shrimp, cheese and salsa. I was only able to finish one. My better half had the fish tacos that were generous cod filets, slaw and a seasoned crema, a definite must try. Took a bite of the coconut shrimp next, since I wanted that Banh Mi for the end. Knew that would be the best... I was wrong... That coconut Shrimp taco has the best bite of the day. It's always a good time when you get that magical wow factor from a bite of food. I then jumped to the Banh Mi, which was good, but I felt missed some of that Banh Mi flavor I love. That pickled onion flavor really didn't come out for me. I'd be back. When, no idea, since I don't live in the state, but we enjoyed ourselves. I feel the price was good for what we got. We were in NJ to visit my sister in Law and were hungry and looking for places for a quick lunch. I typed in fast food around where they lived and this place looked interesting so we decided to stop by. My husband and I both got the same craft taco sampler because we didn't want to have to share tacos if they were really good. I wish they would let you substitute tacos on there. I asked if I could substitute the crispy fish taco instead of the Carne asada taco. They said no there's no substitutions. I don't get why though, both are the same price. So we added 2 of the fish tacos as well, so we each had 4 tacos. We were even contemplating 1 of us getting the craft sampler and 1 of us get the classic sampler and splitting, but both samplers had the carne asada and we didn't want that. So we ordered and the tacos were brought to our table. They all looked fresh and pretty packed. I was worried about them being too small because some people said it wasn't much, but I thought it was a good amount for the price. I was most excited to try the short rib Bahn mi taco. I really liked the crunchy bahn mi shell on this one, but the short rib was a little watered down and could have used more flavor. I think pork belly or even pulled pork would have been better on this bun than the short rib. It could have used more bahn mi flavor. My favorite one was the coconut shrimp Taco. The shrimp were crispy and it had a lot of flavors going on. The crispy fish was good too but the coconut shrimp taco definitely outshined the fish taco. The carne Asada one was ok, nothing special. I was also excited they had guava and passion fruit sodas so I got some to take home. And they had a hibiscus tea there that was pretty good too. We liked this place and would possibly come back if we are in the area again. My only complaint is I wish they would allow some substitutions to make it more convenient. And there also should be an option to just purchase 1 single taco if you wanted to try a mix of them, or a create your own own sampler. The minimum amount of tacos is 2 for each type. Ehh... $36 for small chips & guacamole, americano for 4.5 y/o son, carne asade for me and the short rib for Husband. No drinks. Chips & Guac: ordered the small, plenty, chips too flimsy for scooping. Americano: fine, a little flavorless, mild ground beef, temperature wasn't hot enough Carne Asada: good, lime added to it, but not temperature hot enough for eating in. Short rib: amazing, loved it, a little greasy. No more drinks on tap, went and got our water from the car. We don't drink soda and that seemed to be all that was in the cooler. I refuse to pay for water. Ate there vs going home. Kids meals don't have tacos as an option - that's a bummer - if I wanted my kid to eat burger or chicken tenders we would have gotten fast food some other place only option besides that was a quesadilla. Overall really good food. It borders on being expensive. For some items I think it's worth the price, others not so much. I understand the changes in the market and inflation just $13-$15 for just a burrito is tough, granted it is large. Chicken burrito was good but the shredded chicken was in large pieces which contributed to it falling apart (I'll leave the foil next time). But I love how full they make them. Dip flight was good. The dips are all flavorful and delicious but the chips are overly oily. This is my second time getting it and I don't know that I'll get the chips again. They're thin and crispy but oil was pooling on some of them. The burrito bowl is also delicious. I've some of the other meats and all were really flavorful. Overall I would definitely recommend. I've never eaten in so can't speak to the service the the counter staff is always friendly and the ambiance is nice. read more

On my first visit I ordered the Chicken Tinga burrito bowl and a Mexican Pepsi. The staff is still learning but they are friendly and helpful. You can dine in or take it to go. They have four tables and one larger booth. Everything is spaced out for covid dining. The decor still looks like the previous restaraunt with a few different changes. They have a large selection of entrees but there is no lunch menu. I enjoyed my chicken tinga bowl but wanted more rice or greens underneath the bed of delicious chicken and cheese. The Mexican Pepsi seemed expensive for $3.50. There are no fountain drinks only a glass cooler with flavored mexican sodas, water, and a few other drinks. The Rita's is still open on the adjacent side. It's worth a visit if you are looking for some Mexican food. On my second visit I had the Carne Asada Burrito. It was very large and filled with al the good stuff you would expect. It has lots of steak, lettuce rice, tomato. It also comes with a small dipping container of guacamole and a wedge of lime. It was $13 but you are getting steak. My third visit was another burrito. I had the chicken tinga with a choice of cilantro lime rice, and pico de gallo. I liked the flavor of the chicken tinga and overall I thought it was a good value for $11. Again it comes with guacamole and a lime wedge. They also have Mexican fountain drinks. You have four choices of 16oz drinks for $3.50 each. See menu picture. All my meals were to go lunches so I am only rating it based on ordering service and the food. We we're in the area and my favorite cuisine is Mexican so when this restaurant was recommended to us we had to go and it definitely was not a disappointment. They have indoor and outdoor seating but since there was some wind we decided to stay indoors. Plenty of room between tables so no worrying about bumping into people, nice decor and friendly staff. The menu had a variety of choices some I've never heard of such as the Brussel sprout tacos. Highly recommend! They also have a salsa bar with at least 6 different flavors. I received tacos with lettuce and cheese as I wanted but they also had what seemed like a tomato base spread.... Why? It's a regular taco. Why are you putting a spread on regular tacos? The previous Taco place (Taco Lindo) was purchased(?) by Caballito. Since its still technically the same business just with different ownership & branding, the review will reflect as such. First and foremost, I liked Taco Lindo. I felt their pricing was very fair for what you got and the portions were JUST right. It was definitely not "cheap" Ameri-Mex but wasn't over the top, and always hit the spot. My issue with Lindo was when you would order toppings for takeout sometimes they were ON the tacos, sometimes on the side, sometimes you got a little (or barely any), sometimes you got a lot. There was no rhyme or reason to it, while not a HUGE deal, it really was my only complaint. Those mango & roasted poblanos on top of a taco were heaven. Now to Caballito. I know the name literally means "little taco" and you can pack a LOT of flavor into small bites. However, if i'm paying $15.00 for 3 tacos, i'd hope they're a little bigger than a bite and a half. I ordered the sample pack of 3 tacos which came with a coconut shrimp taco, a short rib taco, and a bahn mi taco. My family ordered kids meals and a taco salad. First, let's talk about heresy in taco places. How can you sell a taco salad without the big lamp shade taco shell??? HOW?? Not complaining, we just usually love breaking up the lamp shade at the end of the salad haha. My wife liked the salad, just sad we had no shell to break up. The kids meals i felt were a good value coming with tacos, fries(not chips?), and churro's. The americanos were kind of plain, but still good overall. The bahn mi taco alone was AMAZING. That bun shell..perfection. The coconut shrimp taco was also delicious, and the short rib was honestly just ok. My meat in the short rib was tough and chewy and though, while I ate it, was my least favorite of the 3. One big complaint was that the corn tortilla shells were VERY rubbery, wasn't a fan at all. We also ordered a large side of chips & guac as well as a side of churros. The chips and guac were $9.50, so we expected a large guac container (as compared to other places in the area that do takeout guac), and while it was delicious, it was very small. We barely had enough (and we took little bits). The churros, while good with the chocolate ganache were tough to eat and too chewy. I'm not entirely sure if they're made fresh or par cooked then re-cooked, but they definitely were not fresh, unfortunately. While my family and I felt overall that our meal was good and we'd probably return, I felt that some of the sides were rather lacking, and while the filling of the gourmet tacos was good, the shells were underwhelming and the portion size wasn't enough to justify the price. I'm all for paying the price for high quality and consistency, I just felt like it was only "kind of" there. Overall, the food, service, online ordering experience, and atmosphere was good. Disappointing. $9 for two of the smallest tacos I have ever seen. Not only small but pretty sure the puddle of grease weighed more than the tacos. Oh and rice cost extra - looked and tasted like it came from a box. While waiting to order and again to receive food, we watched the staff do everything from cleaning tables, to handling money and final to serving food without washing hands. The lady behind the register I hope was having a bad day as her personality was like sandpaper. Cute setting and has potential but I won't be going back. Overpriced, cleanliness concerns and not anything to say other than a cute place. Will not judge the wait as it took an amazing amount of time to be waited on and served.
