Having lived in Austin for over two decades, I find it easy to satisfy my occasional Tex-Mex needs. Yet, since having happened upon Las Cocinas in Bastrop--thanks mainly to the Yelp reviews--my cravings have risen to an alarming level! Our family frequents the area, and now a stop here is engineered into our plans. Yes, the food is greasy (please and thank you), and the margaritas are large, refreshing, and adequately proofed. My GF and I drive in from Austin occasionally to eat here. Though I have only one prior review, I have eaten here many times for lunch or dinner. Last night we ate here. Busy place but outstanding service and the usual good food. They have both a brown and green salsa with chips. Both are extremely good. I often eat their carne guisada or fajitas. Both are best of class dishes. Last night I had cheese enchiladas and substituted their regular sauce for their carne meat sauces. We are talking melt in your mouth enchiladas. My GF ordered a lighter meal. Their "summer plate" which had a crispy taco, a puffy taco with queso on top, and a bean and cheese chalupa. There wasn't anything left when she was done. It is one of her favorite restaurants too. If you are coming down from College Station on 21, or East - West on 71, it is about 5-7 minutes north of the 21/71 intersection. This review reflects the fact that I went for lunch and ordered the enchiladas, and they charged me for the dinner portion (which was served). If I go during lunch, should I have to specify I want the lunch portion or is it reasonable to assume so? At least ask to clarify? I spoke in native Spanish so no misunderstandings here. Second and final night in Bastrop, my job to pick a place sitting poolside, browsing Yelp. Tex-Mex sounded good and Las Cocinas was an easy choice, according to yelpers. Don't forget the 'las' if you have trouble finding it on your map app. We sped by it on 95 and had to u-turn back. Plastic tablecloths. TV showed men golfing. Big menu with wide range of options. Good chips n salsas. Average beer selection. Not a lot of vegetarian options so I got a quesadilla with veggies (Really, no chicken, no beef? That's right, no meat!). I almost ordered only half and should have. It was big and cheesy and topped with sour cream and guacamole. Beans had meat mixed in so I didn't try them but S said they were good. She had a taco salad with beef. Also good. Not fine dining, but casual service, a solid meal and we're a happy couple. Funny little gift shop up front by the register. Picked up friends from Washington, DC at the airport, told them we were going out for some good Mexican food (note: didn't take them for Tex-Mex), they were overwhelmed. Good Margaritas, and they devoured the chips and salsa. When it came time to order food, Wayne got the Pollo Sabaroso, Pennie had the Carnitas and I had the Pollo a la Parilla. All dishes came out piping hot, sizzling, everything was cooked to perfection. They said it was the best Mexican food they ever had and I will agree with them. We've lived in Bastrop for years and have never been here before tonight. That's a shame because the food was VERY good. The service was also very good. They were very attentive and friendly. We stopped here for lunch one day. I ordered the enchilada plate. The enchiladas were good and the rice and beans were pretty good also. Even though I was full from lunch (I overindulged on chips and queso) I heard they had homemade flan so I had to try it. The flan turned out to be the best part of the meal. I have eaten here 2 or 3 in the past. Each time the food was just ok, at best. Ive heard several people say that its good, but from my own experience, i disagree. In fact, today I almost wasn't able to eat it. Im very picky about my salsa, too; i was very disappointed in their offering. First time eating at this restaurant. I judge a Mexican restaurant by their Carnitas, then try other items. The Carnitas were delicious. My son had their cheese enchiladas, my wife their pollo a la parilla, and a friend pollo chipotle. Everyone enjoyed their dinners. My only drawback to the whole dinner was seeing the servers heating packaged flour and corn tortillas. I would have thought they made fresh, homemade tortillas. I just flew in from ATL and was starving. I was craving some tacos. I jumped onto Yelp and searched for places near my hotel. I was very worried that since I was so far from the city I'd never find anything remotely good. But I was determined. My girl was on the phone recommending places and she chose this place and sent me the address. I thought the place was gonna be in a plaza near other businesses. Too my surprise I felt like I was rolling through a very shady area (if it was night time you'd be really concerned since there weren't any street lights) even during the day. The gps says I've arrived and I look over to my left and see this tiny little shack with a gravel parking lot and an abandoned warehouse across the street. I pulled into the parking lot and was so confused of how I ended up in such a remote location. But from my experience with authentic good Mexican food, If the place looks shady and is far away from everything else, It must be that good to still be able to exist. I walked in and turned the doorknob (yeah the place had an old door lol) and as soon as I walked in a very sweet mid aged lady greeted me at the door and asked me if I was alone and seated me. She gave off this motherly vibe and I felt so comfortable. She asked me what I'd like to drink brought it right over and as I scoured the menu I found the Street Tacos. Let me just tell you right now, if you want tacos, ORDER THE STREET TACOS! The tortillas were cooked to perfection (I wish they would've doubled up on the tortillas) but the meats, cheese, fajitas, and guacamole on top was pure bliss to eat. Each bite set off my taste buds. I had to take a break between each taco because they were so large! By the time I finished the third taco I was stuffed! It was perfectly cooked chicken, beef, and chorizo all put together. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who's craving some tacos. The staff was friendly and the place was very clean. When you are near Bastrop, you should venture out to this restaurant. We occasionally stay at the Hyatt Lost Pines and need to get away from the hotel food you are restricted there. This little restaurant is very good with its very friendly, small town customer experience. I prefer a little more spices but my daughter, who eats healthier than I, loves it because of that simple freshness. My wife and daughter loved the fajitas and I had chicken soup. I'm giving Las Cocinas 5 Stars because I think they do what they do better than anyone else in our area (Bastrop/Elgin/Smithville etc...).
