Came here because Botin was packed. The food did not disappoint! I will dream about that tomato and tuna salad for the rest of my days.

    Amazing Paella

Excellent ambiance, food, and service. I loved the restaurant ambiance and the paella was amazing.

Great food and very hospitable - we'll worth the black squid croquettes and the Paellla!!

Beautifully Spanish locale with great food and amazing service. We loved it. The cochinillo was super tender and the ternera was cooked just right. The croquetas were the best of my trip and I ordered them all over Spain as I love them. Our head waiter, Chispi, was so friendly and attentive! The place evokes a 1950s full service restaurant feel as indeed this Madrid institution has been here since then. The restaurant is inside the ancient wall of the city. It looks tiny from outside but it is actually quite big. A tuna (a group of college students in costume) came to sing and it was the best experience!

Exelente restaurant. La comida estuvo muy bien y el servicio muy atento. Cumplió las expectativas de restaurant tradicional español.

A must for any tourist! The prices may not suit everyone's pocket but for any Spaniard dish they have mastered the food in taste and tradition. Service is always quick and very responsive. They're great when it comes to helping you put a wine or drink to any plate you're interested in and the building is a flashback to the colonial period of Europe itself. I would recommend and specialty plate or the salmon as it's bursting with flavor and simplicity.

Where the Robin Hood of Spain used to hide out!

If you want to having a historical dining experience in Madrid, come here! This restaurant is where the Robin Hood of Spain used to hide out after robbing people! Who knows you might find some of his stolen goods hidden under the table!

When one pictures going to Europe and you want to imagine what 'Old World' Spain was like, Las Cuevas does an excellent job of painting that picture. I had made a late reservation for the two of us as I had no idea where our day would take us and I didn't want to interrupt anything we might have going on. Plus, it's not abnormal to go to dinner at 9 PM; at least not over there. Well, our day wrapped up and we found ourselves trying to burn time so we were very pleased when they were able to seat us half an hour early. I knew I wanted sangria & I knew I wanted to share an order of the gambas al ajillo. Besides that, I had no idea what I was going to get. Very glad the husband agreed to play along & trusted my twelve year old memory of my previous visit. The sangria was just what you expect when you order a pitcher of sangria in Spain: sweet, with some gorgeous aromatic spices. The garlic shrimp were just as I remembered: served in a sizzling ceramic dish with lots of garlic butter you can soak up with your bread. I tore a couple of pieces off the bread and pressed them down into the hot dish allowing them to get a nice 'char' on the edges as they soaked up the butter. Delicious! For dinner I decided on the Veal Mianese. Perfectly fried golden brown. Pounded thin to be as big as the plate. I ate every bite. The potatoes were there and I tried them, but I didn't love them as much and would have been just as happy with just the protein. My husband destroyed his roasted lamb. He would have licked the plate if we would have been eating at home. A few reviews make comments about the prices being high. It's right off the Plaza Mayor, what I believe to be the heart of the tourist area. So yes, I expected the prices to be a little high. Would I ever call the food bland? No. Would I go here on a regular basis if I lived in Madrid? Probably not. Am I willing to not fret about the money spent on one nice dinner while on vacation? Absolutely. Besides, if I didn't do the conversion in my head on how much I was REALLY spending, the prices weren't that bad.

    Roasted Suckling Pig

It was Thanksgiving and I didn't want turkey, I wanted pork. Came here on a Thursday around 9 PM because there wasn't anything available at the "famous" Botin. However, to my delight, this restaurant served the roasted suckling pig and was just as historical and charming as Botin. Yes, this may not be the oldest, but it has been in business since the 1940's. I ordered the Roasted Suckling Pig and it was so wrong, but so damn good. The pork was so tender it melted in my mouth, and the crispiness of the skin was the perfect texture combination. The side of potatoes that it came with were also divine. My two favorite things in one plate, pork and potatoes. I think it was about 25 euros. If you like olives, you will love theirs. I'm not sure how they brine their olives, but it was different than any other tapas place I've been to. I don't know if this happens every night, but there was a Mariachi band going around the restaurant and it just added to the charm of the whole dining experience. If you don't speak Spanish, don't worry, you will get by. Service was respectful and typical pace of Madrid. I would definitely come back next time I'm in Madrid

Very nice historic artmosphere. Food was delicious ad well. A very touristy area, Plaza Mayor, means the meal will be ecpensive.

Upon making reservations online, we were immediately seated and served bread with mashed sausage/jamon. As someone who does not speak Spanish, it was a bit hard to order and when we asked the server for recommendations, he said everything on the menu which was not very helpful haha but luckily everything was delicious! We tried the seasoned jalapeños, salad with goat cheese, pork cheek and fries, mushrooms, braised pork with wine sauce, potato's and sausages, octopus and potato's, tuna bites and croquettes. Everything was super yummy and came out pretty quickly. Their red wine was also pretty good! And we ended with desserts of truffle chocolates which were decadent, lemon creama, and red cherries in alcohol which was straight up drenched (would not recommend this one). Overall had such a great time here and the server gave us complimentary shots on the house at the end :). A truly great experience and would definitely come back!

After an impromptu tuk-tuk tour of the city, we were dropped of semi near our hotel. Walking down the street we noticed Lhardy, which had a bit of old-school elegance that caught our eye. When we spotted that the "desde 1895" on the wall, we knew we had to pop in. When you walk in, on one end you see a beautiful array of Spanish apps like boquerones, smoked salmon, and savory puff pastries as well as tons of chilled bubbly and wine. The other side has delicious looking sweets and chocolates. We decided to order their famous puff pastries and boquerones. We asked our server about the Lhardy story and apparently their other location was one of the first fine dining establishments in Spain. I'm talking white tablecloth, fancy silverware, upscale service etc. She also told us Lhardy was the first restaurant in Spain to "let" women dine there without their husbands. We love a restaurant ahead of their time. I loved my pop-in to Lhardy and washed down my snacks with a beautiful glass of their cava. If you're in the area, pop in to this shop for a glass and a snack, you will not regret it.
