We arrived for an early lunch and had the place nearly to ourselves. We got a combination platter appetizer, all of which was amazing but especially the empanadas. For a main I got the entraña steak - a classic South American style skirt steak/churrasco which was wood-fire grilled and absolutely fantastic. The bandeja paisa was great too (I didn't order it but stole a few bites). All washed down with a pitcher of refajo - for those not familiar, this is a must-try mix of beer, the soda Colombiana, and a few shots of aguardiente, a sugar cane-based liquor that has an anise/licorice taste to it. Staff was nice and welcoming. I'd for sure come back here, but they said this location is closing soon. Los Tablas has been a staple in Lakeview for decades. I've been coming here since they had a small location across the street. They expanded the dining area and edit a larger bar area right by the host when you enter The service is familiar and has been consistent since they're opening. My friend and I were shocked when what we ordered was served. We've never tried Colombian cuisine, so the waiter suggested that we try their platter special to get a bit of everything, and it really was a bit of EVERYTHING. We tried the combos for two people that had steaks, pork ribs, chicken, yucca, bananas and arepas. If you don't eat that much this will be too much we had left over and took it home. They all had the same flavor and it is $50 for this order. The pina colada was too sweet but we didn't say anything to the bartender because they seemed busy. Such a delicious Colombian dinner! We loved the beef empanadas, but chicken was also yummy! The guac was great and the serving size was giant, although they charged us for a second serving of plantain chips. I came here for Valentine day and I would say the smell once you enter the resturant is phenomenal. We didn't make a reservation because we called and they say no need we can walk in. The time we arrive a bunch of people standing to wait. The waiter came to us and tell us it going to be 1hr wait, we told him we just called 45 min ago and you say no need to make reservation. So after that he seated us within 15 minutes. After we got our order taken we waited for an hour and 20 minutes. Me and my boyfriend were so hungry, finally our waiter came by and we told him we did not get our appetizer or entree. He thought we ate everything. As a Colombian, I found the food here to be good for at least what we ordered. The picada was big, and pricy understandably given this area and the fact that it's a steakhouse. Mostly everything on the plate we all raved about. The meat and ribs were really good. We ordered several chicken and beef empanadas. I typically only go for beef empanadas, and once again, they were much better than the chicken ones. The three side sauces they provide for them were tasty as well. I love Ají and have obviously had better, but they went well with these empanadas. My mom and dad split Ajiaco and said it was ok. I don't think they'd order it again though This place is a BYOB establishment too, so we brought two wine bottles. There is a corkage fee of $5 per bottle, which I believe is only between Monday through Friday. It might be more on the weekends, just an FYI. As far as service goes.... when we first walked in, we did not receive the typical friendly Colombian greeting that we are so accustomed to. Nothing against our server who is not Colombian, but she started the vibe off in a serious and unfriendly tone, but over the course of the night got a little bit better? I feel like the water server guy and the other one who brought our food out was a little bit friendlier. Also, I was a bit disappointed because I made reservations stating we were celebrating my dad's birthday and there was no acknowledgment about it, or a dessert or anything. We were promptly greeted by the hostess who also acted as our waitress. The Sangria was bigger then I remembered and very colorful. We ordered the Empanadas combo (cheese, chicken, and beef). I've had empanadas baked and fried before. This one seems to be made with yucca flour or something that keeps it crunchy after being fried. The side order of arepas might be a little bland by itself but the chorizo added a kick to you. The Skirt steak was marinated well and came out cooked to the level that we requested and was tender. My companion liked the calamari the most as it does not show up often on menus as a main entrée. The combination came with fried potatoes, yucca, and plantains, so we definitely had leftovers. The arepa or whatever that was confused me a bit, I wasn't sure what I was tasting. The chorizo was not Colombian chorizo. The chicken well it's still in the leftover box. Oh! How can I forget! My parents both had a Sopa de Plátano. They said it lacked flavor and it didn't taste like sopa de plátano. Service was great, the young lady was very sweet and helpful. I recently dined here with my family for my sister's graduation and was mortified by how disappointing our experience was for this special day. From the moment we arrived, the tables were not set and it sadly only became worse from here. We sat down and waiting for them to get us water for over an hour. There was no air conditioning in the back, and the wait staff was clearly unprepared for our large group. The service was horrendously slow with an unacceptable wait time for both the drinks and food. One of the wait staff stepped on my friend's foot, and did not apologize. The plates piled up on everyone's table and no one picked them up. My mom and aunts stepped in to clear our guest's plates when we waited. When our meals finally arrived, I was underwhelmed with the quality of the food. Some of my items were cold, other guest's items were missing, and some guest's items were not even processed all together. We had reserved and been assured by management that they would be able to accommodate this many guests weeks ago. Unfortunately this couldn't be further from the truth. Our guests arrived from all over the country to gather for this special celebration, and we were all left with a bad taste in our mouth. When my mom called the manager to report her concerns, they didn't call her back and they did not seem to be concerned with our negative experience. It's clear the staff is overworked and under managed and I don't blame them for trying their best. I won't be returning and will not recommend this place to anyone. If you're looking for delicious Colombian food with stellar service, explore any other Colombian restaurant in the Chicagoland area.
