I'm not in Middle Village very often but after a Dr appt, I wanted to support local businesses. I found a Peruvian restaurant close by that looked terrific. Unfortunately, they weren't open for service yet. Down the block, I stumbled across Las Tias and decided to check it out. Best decision of the day! At first, I wasn't that impressed upon entering. It looked like a typical neighborhood coffee/bakery. A little run down but not too bad. I didn't like that prices for most of their items are NOT posted. (This always makes me a little suspicious). They offer an array of breakfast meals (which are actually available all day), some hot snacks (empanadas, chicharron, sausage, etc), and plenty of baked goods (pastries, cakes, bread). I ended up ordered a variety of items. Well...ALL the items I ordered were Fantastic!! Prices were not bad and the food was delicious. My selections: - Breakfast Meal #5 - Rice & beans, scrabbled eggs, grilled steak and 1/2 of a thin flour arepa. (Around $10). Portion size was very large! I only ate half of the order and I was full. The scrambled eggs had a little spinach and tomatoes, and were well seasoned. I usually don't like super thin steaks but this was tasty and wasn't tough! I prefer corn arepas and dislike flour arepas but the flour arepa that came with this meal was really good. Rice & beans were flavorful. All in all, this was a hearty, tasty meal! - Corn Arepas (around $2-$2.50?). These corncakes were fantastic! Minimally sweet and just terrific; Nice texture. - Pan de queso/Cheese bread (large sized loaf was around $5-$6?). Another fantastic item! So fresh and tasty. I thought there was just cheese sprinkles on top of the loaf, but actually, there was a good amount of cheese baked into the bread. Slightly sweet, light & fluffy and just delicious. Customer service was nice and friendly; service was quick. I totally underestimated this place. Everything was freshly made, tasty and reasonable priced. It was fantastic and I'll be sure to stop by the next time I'm in the neighborhood! read more

Been going to this place for years until today. The cashier had the AUDACITY to ask/tell me " Was she adding a 15 or 20% TIP to my card? I'm sorry but what? I'm never tipping anyone for handing me a piece of bread. Now I will never return. This is just out of control. The look on her face when I said NO was disturbing as well. Pay your workers. We really love this place! We have tried the pan de bono ( cheese bread) and breakfast ( mixed scrambled eggs with arepa) so delicious! I have a feeling we will be returning to try other options. Came here for some Tia and Coffee. Ended up with a weird fruit drink. Lovely service at this little cafe. What I love about them is that they make traditional fresh Colombian Juice drinks! Just don't ever get the white one. I think it's called Lulo. Made me feel like using the loo, and made me feel low. Disgusting. I will have to try more of their menu next time I come, but those fresh fruit drinks are great, especially Maracuja and Guiaiaba. read more

Was craving pan de bono so we drove about 10 minutes for this place. I'm Dominican so I'm used to the slower pace of latino owned establishments but the lady behind the counter took 10 minutes to finish smiling and chatting with the guy in front of me, which is fine but she just kept going. Literally ten minutes. Didn't even find somebody else to help me. As soon as it was my turn she was huffing and puffing and irritated. I love my Colombians and have a few in my family but this isn't the first time I've had inferior treatment in a Colombian establishment as the only darker skinned latina in the room and I definitely decided to never come back. I was parking right on the corner when I saw a sign on their window offering Jugos Naturales meaning Natural Juice. I love raspberry juice so I went to get one Small juice and two beef Colombian empanadas. The juice got sugar, flavored good but without sugar will be better. Empanadas were very disappointed. Not even close to the Colombian bakeries in Jackson Heights or Corona. Not a good introduction of Colombian empanadas for your friends who had never have them. I was in the area visiting, when I finally decided to stop in to "Las Tias Cafe Bakery." It's a very popular spot in Middle Village and it definitely stands out in the area. Walking in I was blinded by the bright yellow, but it worked for the business. Inside their is a friendly lady working the counter. She asked me what I wanted and seem to give me one hundred percent attention. I was grateful they accepted debit. I picked up two chicken empanadas for my managers and a cheese empanada for me. Once i got back I handed them their bounty and we made our way to the office to eat them. I was surprised with the amazing the flakey crust was, but equally disappointed their wasn't enough cheese inside. It was a love hate, but I definitely enjoyed eating it. The beef empanadas was thick and same texture as mine. We all enjoyed them and wanted more. So yes I would go back and yes ask for more cheese. They offer other pastries, soups and meat if your not a empanada fan. I would definitely recommend trying them. Trust me you would be happy you did. read more

So I'm walking passed the café and see the sign for "Buñelos" I was super excited. That I had to go in and try some. I walk in and obviously family of the owners are in here eating because there is a little kid toting around with no shoes on. o_O A woman comes out from the back and smiles at me and says "Hello" her accent is so thick when she greets me, I assume she doesn't really speak English, so I start speaking Spanish to her, asking her about the sign regarding offering Buñleos. She smiles at me and doesn't say anything for a good ten seconds and walks in the back to get someone else. She tells the woman: " I don't understand this woman, can you talk to her?" Just as she says that a Hispanic DOT guy comes in and asks for the same exact thing, speaking to the woman in Spanish I just spoke to, including another woman that came out from the back. "Tiene Buñelos?" He asks. They both start looking with a sad face and say no, we haven't made any. I didn't understand, how my fluent Spanish made you confused? Or was it because of something else? How hard was it to say "no"? So annoyed. So the second woman asks me if I'd like something, and I walk out. -I would of ordered something else, but the first woman just completely turned me off. Great bakery to have by the house The best things here are definitely the chicken empanadas, which are pretty much amazing. Also great are pandebono and bunuelos. BEST. CHICKEN. EMPANADAS. EVER!!!!! I've been coming here for about 5 years whenever possible just for the baked chicken empanadas. They're amazing! The staff is always very kind, even though some of them do speak limited English (I've always gotten by just fine with my VERY broken Spanish). I called here yesterday morning at 8am (Super Bowl Sunday) and placed an order for 50 empanadas. The ladies were more than accommodating. They got my order ready by 3pm (they were even willing to have it ready earlier) and the empanadas were delicious as ever! Everyone at my super bowl gathering loved them! So this a small place... They have like 4 tables for 2 people each... Food is ok. Bread is good but not always fresh... Usually colombians are very welcoming people... I don't see that in this place... They don't even say hi to you... And they expect you to devour your food so you can leave! Stumbled in and tried a "typical platter," from which I conclude the typical Colombian eats a ton of food, doesn't spend much money and isn't too fussy about quality. The pork skin was great: tasty, tender, not too salty, and not greasy like most chicharron I've had. I also liked the sweet plantain. The steak, however, was thin and chewy. The chorizo was surprisingly bland (unlike Mexican style) and tough, as was the plain arepa (corn cake -- much better filled at the Caracas bar in the East Village). Egg, rice, beans, yawn. Most of the food needed lots of their very interesting hot sauce. If I'm around again, I may give the place another try, being more selective in ordering. read more

Definitely a good place for the cultural rich baked goods pertaining to the Colombian, Ecuador and Venezuelan areas. Amazingly fresh almohabanas, pan de bonos and pan de quesos. The empanadas are very good but the baked chicken empanadas are amazing! Definitely some of the best i have tried. Will be returning to try the calentado for breakfast.
