I will forever be chasing this flavor high. Mango Italian ice and vanilla custard are magical together. The custard is so creamy and flavorful and the Italian ice is smooth, doesn't have crystals or ice chunks. My wish is that everyone can try this incredible treat! There is street parking, you order at an outside window and they have a few tables to sit at. I recommend checking their instagram for their hours since the hours on google and Yelp were listed as different and not correct. And I wouldn't want you to miss out on experiencing LaScola's!
So delicious. The mango Italian ice tasted like fresh fruit and not artificial at all. The custard was also good. We appreciated the seating outside. The walk up and order window is also nice. They do accept card.

Potentially a great way to end a meal from one of the local restaurants eaten on a picnic table on the sidewalk. There's a surge of business in the 7 o'clock hour, so while waiting in line, I saw someone get the apricot custard and thought it had chunks of fruit. Boy, was I wrong. It had minced dried apricot that made for a terrible texture that I only ate because I had paid for it and didn't want to throw it away. My dining companions had the soft serve and were happy with it, which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 3.

We asked for cookies, and were surprised on a Friday afternoon that they were completely out. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and we loved the walk-up window.
LaScola is a great Local ice shop in the Highland Park area. On our visit we met a very courteous team ready to tell us about the ice cream flavors. You have the option to taste a flavor before committing to purchase. The scoop size is huge! They have baked goods which they resell from the 'Good Loven Cookie Shop'. I tried the brownie cookie- very good! Very happy with the service and quality!
Fantastic ice cream spot tucked away in Highland Park's business district. They have several flavors of custard available daily. I got a double scoop of snickers (a delicious mix of chocolate, caramel, and peanuts in a vanilla custard. They also have cookie sandwiches, where you select a custard flavor and it goes between two gigantic cookies. My wife got that and loved it. Each of these large desserts was just $5 or so. They also have Italian ice as well as specialty caffeinated drinks. The shop is located on a quiet street so it makes for a very pleasant and low-key date night. They have several outdoor benches and tables nearby for seating.
The best hidden treasure that Highland Park has to offer. Especially in the summer time, my husband and I walk here almost once a week to have their amazing custard. They're reopening in late April and will be featuring soft serve custard again, which paired with their Italian ice, cannot be beat! I love trying all of their fun flavors, my favorites being dulce de leche and the famous lemon olive oil. Can summer come faster?!?
I really enjoy the Italian ice here, I've tried the cherry and the mango, the staff is very nice as well. They have some nice indoor seating but I prefer the outdoor seating on a nice warm day. This is a very cute little shop.
Back already, biked here to justify the calories. This time they have Vietnamese Coffee. Wow! Partners got coconut creme and lemon olive oil (to go with their coffee)

This little custard shop is worth a trip even from my side of the city They have fresh homemade custard (it's like ice cream but a whole lot better) and iced plus assorted coffees and my favorite a root beer float with their hard vanilla custard I also saw some big cookies and brownies they looked fancy Ok back to the custard they have creamy soft serve in vanilla and chocolate Then there is a case of scoopable custards Vietnamese coffee was my pick for a pint to take home They make something called a concrete it's custard blended with candy such as heath bars butterfingers nestle crunch My vanilla with heath bar was loaded with candy so good Add a root beer float how could you go wrong? You can' There are very friendly people running the shop A few outside tables And it's a perfect Indian summer day. I easily found parking on the street

Had a lovely seasonal custard flavor of Honey Lavender! You can sample flavors beforehand and between the chai and honey lavender, I opted for the latter this time. I've been stopping by weekly and have loved every flavor I've tried!! read more

A fantastic neighborhood spot. I stopped by here after having it on my list for years and I will definitely be adding it to my rotation. Although the menu is fairly simple, there is still enough variety to please just about anyone. The cashier was very helpful in helping me understand the various options and matching flavors. I tried an ice burg with cherry italian ice and twist soft serve and it was delicious! It reminds me of Rita's but much more elevated. I ordered a kid size which was about a scoop worth of each (2 scoops). The ice is thicker and didn't melt on me even in 95 degree heat. It is a walk-up counter but there are multiple picnic tables and umbrellas on the sidewalk and adjacent parklet. I'm excited to come back and try the custard! read more

Don't doubt LaScola's coffee just because it is an ice & custard place!!!! I enjoyed an iced honey late with oat milk this morning and it was excellent! I believe they use La Prima coffee which is popular around Pittsburgh. They had typical flavorings as well as interesting ones such as lavender, rose, and gingerbread. Also note they have milk substitutes: almond, soy, and oat! There is also outside dining. I will be back to try the Italian ice!! read more
Came here after playing volleyball nearby at Highland Park. It's the cutest little place where you order from a window. There's outdoor seating with benches and umbrellas. Everything on the menu looks delicious. Plenty of cold treats for a hot day. They also serve coffee and pastries. It's located in a neighborhood and they had a longgg line on the sidewalk minutes after it opened, you can tell there are lots of loyal customers and it's a community favorite. Had the best Italian ice I've ever had here! read more

The ice at this place is amazing. It tastes very similar to the type of ice you would get in Europe. It is very fine and isn't like a typical snow cone taste. read more

My favorite place to get custard hands down! All the flavors I've tried have been fantastic...thin mint, coffee, cookie dough, vanilla. They do coffee and espresso drinks as well. If you can't decide between espresso or custard, try the affagato. It's a combination of both! Aside from the great quality of sweets and drinks, the people are amazingly kind. The first time I was there, I unknowingly came 10 minutes before closing. Instead of being snippy like some other places might be, these people were genuinely kind and appreciative of the business. They even gave us extra waffle cones they were going to throw out! I love stopping here after dinner at Smiling Banana Leaf. A great way to end a date. read more
This is the perfect spot for a quick treat during a walk in highland park. The service is very friendly and the prices are excellent. The Italian ice tastes very fresh and authentic (though not as sweet as I prefer) and there's enough items to be picky but not so many that you get overwhelmed. Limited indoor seating is available and parking is tough. It's easy to miss if you aren't looking for it but again perfect sweet enhancement for a casual stroll. read more

I came here at the suggestion of a friend, and I was surprised to find the ices rather different than ones I've had before. They have a very smooth, almost creamy texture, and I loved the flavor selection. We tried the banana, the passion fruit, and the mango. The mango was definitely the best. It was served out of a soft-serve style machine and could optionally be twisted with vanilla soft serve. I've never seen twisted Italian ice before! read more
LaScola's exceeded my expectations! Getting the iceberg (Italian ice + custard) was definitely the right decision. I really liked the peach Italian ice. I was a little unsure of what to expect from the lemon olive oil, but I'd heard good things, so I gave it a shot. I thought it was delicious, with a little taste of lemon and a smoothness that I think comes from the olive oil. It went great with the peach Italian ice. I plan to come back to LaScola's for sure, and will hopefully try some more flavors! read more
Perfection. The lemon olive oil custard is sheer perfection. We biked here on a mid-May day, and rolled in ready for something light, sweet and refreshing. The ice burg is amazing - one scoop custard and one scoop Italian ice. I chose the lemon olive oil and the mango Italian ice. I have had few bites in my life that hit the spot in that unique way. Yum! I am a huge fan and will be back many more times. One request - a decaf espresso for late night affogatos would be super fabulous. We will be back! read more

To my knowledge, La Scola is the only local water ice producer in PGH. They do not have their own store, but various stores around town sell their water ice, and their stand can be found at many local events. I've always bought from them directly through their stand, which I've found at Bryant St. Fest, Downtown PGH Pop Up Market, and Bloomfield Little Italy Days. At their stand, La Scola typically offers a few different flavors of water ice, as well as frozen lemonades. Their water ice is the best in PGH, without a doubt. It has a silky texture, and the flavor is refreshing and delicious--though it's pretty sweet, so be forewarned. Their frozen basil lemonade was less impressive, unfortunately. Rather than having a slushy texture throughout like a frozen margarita, it's just basil-infused lemonade with some ice blended in that floats on top, making it awkward to drink. While La Scola's water ice is the best in PGH, I am held back from awarding a perfect rating for a couple of reasons. First, I'm from DE, which is in close proximity to Philly, the water ice capitol of the USA, so I have exacting standards. While La Scola's water ice is definitely a cut above Rita's, it doesn't approximate the quality of family owned stands in Philly such as Pop's. Second, the prices are on the steep side. In Philly, a small sized water ice around the same size as La Scola's runs $1.75 at Pop's, and has pieces of lemon in it to boot. On the other hand, it's less expensive than Rita's--but then again, what water ice isn't? Third, the "frozen" basil lemonade needs work (see above). Despite these criticisms, La Scola's water ice is definitely worth a try, so I suggest picking some up if you happen to see their wares around town. I don't remember all of the stores that carry their water ice, but I do remember that Groceria Italiana is one of them. If you frequent the local festivals like I do, you shouldn't have any trouble locating their stand! read more

Absolutely delicious lemon olive oil custard (I know, I know...that doesn't SOUND good, but trust me, it is) in a still-warm homemade waffle cone. My girls really liked their thin mint flavor. And the folks who served us were oh so friendly and helpful. Place was sparkling clean. read more

It's a cute little place which has selected flavors of Icecream. I tried Rum Raisin Italian Icecream which was awesome...the raisins in it tasted amazing. Definitely a Must try! read more

Tom was the very first sponsor of the Italian Cortile Car Show at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and has supported the event since 2009. When he said he had opened this store I had to stop by and try. To say that I was amazed at the tastes and flavors I experienced would be an understatement. This is going to be one of those hidden gems that makes Pittsburgh a remarkable place for foodies! read more

Yum!!! Such a treat. I really like their "icebergs" which are a mix of Italian ice and custard. Lots of unique flavors (cotton candy, lemon olive oil). A couple of tables for seating. read more
