First, this is delicious ice cream without the fact that they are dairy free. It was amazing. The flavors are fantastic and you would believe that it is a dairy explosion but you are wrong on the dairy part. We were down the street enjoying a great calzone and some beers and we kept seeing people walk by with ice cream. So when we left we found the place...we had no idea what we had found. Inside the two ladies were cheerful and greeted us with smiles. They gave us tastes of several different options and we each chose the one we wanted. Payment was easy and there were opportunities to stay inside if you preferred. Several great spots I know carry these ice cream sandwiches (Pittsburgh Taco Boys, Burghers in Millvale, among numerous others. I tried my first Leona's sandwich from the Millvale restaurant). Fast forward a year and somehow I see a menu for Leona's ice cream sandwiches and they are the most luxurious combinations I had ever seen! I was under the impression that everything was dairy-free so I knew I had to finally stop by! We had dinner down the street and we absolutely had to stop by for dessert. Service was friendly from the moment we came in, and in addition to getting some very tasty samples I even learned the wallpaper was designed by the same woman who worked on the team art for the NFL Draft this year! Anyways, ice cream was delicious. There's a rotating list of flavors, and I happened to try the raspberry ripple, ube, and strawberry. They all happened to be dairy free, but I'm not sure that everything on the menu actually is. Everything is clearly labeled though! I wasn't a fan of the cookies that day so I ended up going with a scoop. Scoop size descriptions were also excellent! The mini is a golf ball, and the regular is a tennis ball. My hubby asked about their vegan chocolate and what was in it and ended up having an interesting conversation with the person who worked there about vegan ice cream. Oh Em Gee. I've been a Leona's fan forever, like 12+ years....and they finally have their very own scoop shop (I won't count their brief stint in L-ville). This place is GORGEOUS, the flavors are excellent as usual, the sandwiches are great, and I thought they couldn't get better....but they did! WOW! Pittsburgh is the true home of the Klondike, but Leona's is the supreme ruler of ice cream sandwiches. First off- these sandwiches are BIG. Like you need two hands to hold them (and protect them from other mouths). The flavor combinations range from expected to experimental. I also like that Leona's is all over the city. AMAZING. I had the cinnamon ice cream with oatmeal lace cookies which were being sold in the sticklers food truck at the steel city pizza fest. I chose the cinnamon oatmeal over the chocolate chunk vanilla bean at the recommendation of the guy working the truck and I am so glad I did! The cinnamon ice cream was perfectly soft and creamy and flecked with cinnamon. It had a great cinnamon flavor but wasn't hot by any means--which is just the way I prefer my cinnamon. The oatmeal lace cookies were the perfect thickness at texture. I loved how bits of the cookie would get mixed into the ice cream as I was biting -- it was almost like having sweet oatmeal as a mix in to the ice cream. We tried a sandwich at Grist brewery after meeting Leona herself who was super sweet and lovely. I tried the Zeke's coffee with chocolate shortbread. The icecream is generous and exceptional with great coffee flavor. Unfortunately I was not a fan of the chocolate cookie which was a bit dry and by how frozen the whole thing was (perhaps a function of the seller and packaging?). The ice cream only softened enough by my last few bites. For $6 this was a big but expensive only "ok" ice cream sandwich. Shareable for a dessert. I was randomly craving Leona's ice cream cookie sandwiches on a Sunday after a meal at la palapa so I googled their locations and saw that they sell them at the pub chip shop on east Carson. We took a walk down the street and saw that they were selling key lime/graham, heath, and cinnamon oatmeal.
