The salad was super refreshing and tasty. It had what seemed like crispy pizza dough bites instead of standard croutons, which was a simple but great touch. Unfortunately, the pizza was a letdown. It was pretty floppy and soggy (maybe from the mushrooms?), and the flavor overall lacked depth. It was a bit sour which I kind of like in a pizza, but not much substance to it. Undercarriage was okay in the non soggy parts. Service was friendly, and the food came out reasonably fast, though the overall vibe felt a bit rushed given how quickly they turn tables. Cute little corner spot in Shadyside, we stopped for pizza. The pizza was a delicious thin, tasty, and chewy dough with a delicious sauce and mozzarella. We got the olive pizza with an assortment of olives. The pizza came out so quick! The server was attentive and helpful letting us know we could order gelato at the counter and just add it to our tab. The pizza was SO GOOD! I would definitely recommend to everyone and am already craving to go back. The gelato was good but tastes more like ice cream than the icier gelato I prefer. Pickup was easy and quick, we didn't eat in person so can't comment on the service in that respect beyond that. Mercurio's on Walnut Street was a nice experience overall. When you walk in, you are welcomed into a small, quaint spot with the brick oven pizza area visible in the back, which I always love to see. I was seated close to the window, which I really appreciated because the sun was shining that day and I was fully in the mood to let the sunlight hit my skin while I relaxed. The hostess picked a great spot for me. I started with a glass of wine and ordered the bruschetta and prosciutto antipasta before my meal, along with a pizza. The antipasta was nice and refreshing. The tomatoes were slightly soft, but it was still enjoyable overall. For the pizza, I got the Salame Calabrese. I do love brick oven pizza when the texture and seasoning are just right. This one was a bit softer than I personally prefer and had some slightly more charred spots. The sauce could have used a touch more seasoning for my taste, but it was still a decent pie. It is possible that the timing played a role since I came for a late lunch. Dinner service might offer a slightly different experience. I am not completely sure if I will return specifically for the pizza, but I would consider coming back to try their gelato. read more

As someone who grew up on pizza in the New York/New Jersey area, I don't typically try too many other pizzas around the US, but as this one came highly recommended, we gave it a shot. We went after 7 on a Monday night, and even then there was over a 30 minute wait, which immediately speaks volumes to how regarded Mercurios is in the area. We got two personal pies: a white and a red. The white was unfortunately, disappointing. While there was some good flavors to it, unfortunately white in this case just means the absence of sauce, and that empty space isn't filled with anything else. This results in patches of cheese and toppings, and other large spaces unoccupied by anything other than the dough. The red was the same, if the voids were filled with sauce. This leads to a much fuller pie and flavor. We finished our meal with a gelato which was exceptional and could stand on its own in a shop dedicated just to that. Overall, if you call the white pie a mulligan, it was a great experience and one of the best pizzas in the area. But the white pizza really is one of the worst I've had, so stay away from that and you'll have a good time. read more

The waiting list would notify us by phone in 10 minutes, so we had just enough time to check out Amazing Books nearby. Incredible Wood Fired Pizza for a Pittsburgh Mini Trip! I stopped here for lunch with my sister to try her favorite Shadyside pizza restaurant. I came for the pizza and left full from a whole pie and waffle cone gelato. I ordered the Margherita Con Bufala with a Diet Coke and finished off my meal with Mango gelato in a waffle cone. Margherita Con Bufala This pizza is the one to get. If you're feeling indecisive or just prefer something simple. This is a safe bet for a stellar pie. According to their menu, this has won awards and my tastebuds agree. The pizza is perfectly thin with an airy springy crust. The San Marzano tomato sauce is sweet and delicious topped with the perfect ratio of Buffalo mozzarella. As others have reviewed, the oil and moisture from tomatoes can "pool" on top of the pie but this is what is expected with fresh ingredients and olive oil drizzle. I happily sopped mine up with the crust. If you're looking for a thick or crunchy crust, this may not be for you. Gelato The mango gelato was refreshing and much creamier than I expected. It's the closest I've had to authentic Italian gelato since visiting Italy two summers ago. Refills for drinks were offered promptly and service was kind and attentive. There was no rush to leave. It's the type of place that leaves you wanting to come back for more in both food and atmosphere. I'm not in Pittsburgh often but when I do come back, this will be on my list. Really disappointing experience at Mercurio's after hearing this was the place to go for pizza in the Shadyside area. We were sat at a table by the oven which we thought was going to be nice, until they had exhaust heat blowing at us the entire time. This place is legit. I went with husband and my mom. My mom is 100% Italian and grew up with grandparents who made pizza just like this, according to her. We shared two pizzas. The red one had eggplant on it and the sauce was more like crushed tomatoes, which my mom loved. The white pizza had ham on it and the cheeses were so flavorful. The crust on both was perfection! I've been to the Fox chapel location a few times. First time here. The smoked mozzarella margherita pie was delicious, and I enjoyed the gelato as always. I enjoyed the mom and pop vibe of the Fox chapel location a bit more though. Fox chapel was eager to let you sample the gelatos before buying whereas this location had a sign against it. Staff very friendly but they told me if I wanted gelato before my check then go to counter to order. My table was then taken and replaced so I had to eat outside in the cold and pay at the counter. I can't believe I've never left a review for Mercurios before. We've been coming here for years. Honestly, it is one of my children's favorite places and they still love it, even as they've grown into teenagers. However, I cannot give them five stars given what happened to me there tonight. I was seated at a table, alone, this time, no hungry teenagers with me, thank goodness. But I was completely utterly ignored. I was ignored when I first walked in and tried to get a table, but I did eventually catch someone's attention. But then I was ignored while I was sitting at the table. It was as though I was invisible. People walked past and no one recognized my presence at all. I was there for 15 minutes and just walked out. No one even noticed me leave. Truly not the best experience and the fact that it happened during a stressful week made it even worse. We've had sketchy service in the past - it happens at all restaurants - but we've never had anything happen to this magnitude at Mercurio's. It was especially heartbreaking because there were many workers there and not that many patrons. There was no reason for it. Very disappointing. Really excellent Neapolitan pizza in a homey space. Everything on their menu is amazing, but my absolute favorite thing on their menu is the Bianca. They add tomato slices and so much garlic and it's just such a good combination with the chewy thin dough. The pizzas are always fast to come out after you order so there's never too long of a wait once you're seated, but getting seated does often take a while since the space is pretty small and it's a really popular spot. Don't miss out on their gelato either -- there are always so many fun flavors and you can get multiple in a single cup to try more flavors.
