Things have only gotten worse here. The pricing is outrageous more expensive than any other thrift store. This is like a high end boutique in Carmel. There are no bargains here, you'll be paying more than ebay or Etsy on items that they get for free. Why don't they markdown items that don't sell? They wont negotiate on their prices either. This is a strict business which doesn't care if you return to patronage. They don't support our community, only their cause. And how do they support our veterans? I have no idea because they won't tell us. They should put out a new letter that documents what they're doing for our veterans with all of our donations. My husband is a proud veteran but gets no benefits from here. Oh, only a10% discount, and only if you have your discharge paperwork. There are NO BARGAINS HERE. They rarely have sales, only once in while and rarely have free things, items that won't sell but are basically broken down garbage which belongs in the landfill, with the exception of books, lp's and dvd's or vhs. Nothing good or useful. Moreover, the staff is unwilling to negotiate prices, indicating a strict business approach that does not prioritize customer loyalty. They are not friendly and somewhat rude and snotty, especially the young man cashier, he's just rude and uncaring. I find it disconcerting that they scrutinize donations and selectively accept only items they deem saleable. As a result, we no longer donate to this organization. Why do I come back? With hopes that some day it will get better. Especially after reading all the similar negative and disparaging reviews, it's not just me who sees all the unfavorable things here. Lots of parking available and is at the dump so you can bring boxes to dump in bins right outside. Same driveway where people come to dump stuff so lots of pick ups dropping stuff off. Last Chance has a lot of stuff but everything was over priced for what it is. Pretty disappointing. A lot of it is outside in the elements like the bikes and they are rusting but still priced high. They had some garden pots that would can buy new for less. read more

This was my first visit after finding LCM by chance. The houseware inventory was very sparse and what was there was priced high for being a thrift store. Limited staff but they were all helpful and up beat. Lots of shoppers so parking was an issue. Big backyard open space with plumbing fixture, lumber and patio furniture. My low review is just on the high prices of everyday household items and being so far off the beaten path. Is it worth a visit? Yes just to check it out but not someplace I would go on a regular basis. It also has clothes but I didn't check that sections out. read more

Great for treasure hunters looking to re-cycle antiques or looking for cheap prices on stuff. The Veterans organization nonprofit has taken over operations and it looks better organized. A little cleaner, but still wear a mask to protect yourself. Check the hours, they are not open every day. I totally believe in re-cycling, where possible: but please do not hoard ( not healthy). Since the 1960s, mini storage businesses make a small fortune off of hoarders. Crazy in our consumerism economy, that so many are addicted to massive consumption ( not just food). I love the concept of a place right next to the dump where people can purchase everything that you find in thrift stores for much less of a cost. Best thrift in the region by a huge margin. You will need a car to get here, as it's part of the county's waste management facility. Don't be phased by the minimal parking directly in front, as there is an auxiliary lot to the west of the store. This place is enormous, and merchandise stretches out into the lot behind the main warehouse (in tents). It has a lot of furniture -- we saw MCM side chairs that people would pay big bucks for in San Francisco. The art is better quality than the usual thrift stuff. Clothing selection is small and curated. There are tools, patio furniture, pet furniture -- it's like a whole department store, only used and cheap. Counter staff clearly knows the regulars. If I were trying to furnish an apartment in the Monterey area, I'd be one. read more

I've been going to Last Chance Mercantile for a few years now. I've never had a negative experience until today. My aunt and I brought several bags of items to donate. The employee (tall lady with short blond hair) approached the vehicle with a shopping cart. We went to the trunk of my aunt's car and proceeded to remove the bags from the trunk. The employee took a look at the bags and looked at one bag and says "that's garbage" we can't take that. I was kind of taken aback by her comment. If she had taken the time to look under the top items she probably would have noticed all the resaleable items underneath. As we continued, she looked at the other bags and says "all Christmas stuff? We have enough of that. We can't take that. You can throw that in recycle." But yet she grabbed the bags of oversized clear Christmas ornaments. You are Last Chance Mercantile. Why would you refuse donated items? She made the whole experience very unpleasant. Maybe the employee should NOT be the one to decide what can be accepted or denied. You are called Last Chance Mercantile. And I don't understand why this place doesn't have a bin for what they consider "garbage" for garbage. You are NEXT to a landfill. Instead, we have to take it all back home when it could have been disposed right there. Apparently, management doesn't care, and we the consumer will have to continue to deal with the rude staff. read more

We've been coming here for years, when the merchandise was in wooden packing crates and if it was raining, too bad! Loved it when they moved into building. When it switched ownership, we knew there would be changes. But their prices are still way too high for the stuff they are selling! Things like books, over priced and just sit there gathering dust, silly really... I used to really like this place, but recently, there has been a change for the worst. I was looking for ceramic tiles for a fill in job in my patio, and I found a bunch, but they were the wrong color. A gentleman asked me how many pieces I needed and when I said 75, he said I can have them for $50. The pieces were only 6 by 6 and they still had glue on the back from when they were removed. So, I would have to clean each piece before uses, and I am a senior. Anyway, I offered $25 which he did not accept. Still fine and I had no issue with him. I brought one 12 by 12 tile up to the front with me for a color reference, in case I came back. This is the good part: When I tried to pay for it, the lady said I should pay $5 for it. I explained that these tiles cost around $2 brand new at most stores, and that since it still had glue on it from the last usage, it is only worth about a buck. She took the tile and told me to go get it then. Lol. Okay, why not just say no? Why be rude about it? I have no answer. I did tell her that I donate a lot of stuff to LCM, which is a true statement because I like to support Vets. But with rude folks working the checkout counter, not sure this good thing will last. Anyway, I went to Home Depot and as predicted, bought the tile for $ 2.50 a square foot. They lost a sale, and I lost a chance to support Vets. Bad day. Lol. read more

Before the pandemic (and before the charity now running it), this use to be the best thrift store in the county. NOT any more! Prices have become outrageous, not what you expect from a "thrift" store. We use to walk out with armloads of treasures. Now, you can take a brief walk around, check out the prices and be on your way. Not sure who the people are that shop here, but, bargains CAN'T be the reason. So Ive been shopping at Last Change for years, over 10 maybe 15yrs. I normally leave with lots of random treasures and a big smile. What I can say about my recent trip was I left with nothing. Clay pots tiny and small were 2-4 dollars, wow. Dollar tree has them for a buck and "bigger". I've been coming here for several months looking for different items to buy. But notice that prices have considerably gone up and a lot of things that are at this business just sit collecting dust for quite a while. Some of the big furniture pieces do you have a sticker saying that they're sold which is a good thing I guess. However during the raining season out outside when they received several army foot Lockers they priced them at $35 and then they let them sit outside in the rain and they got ruined that's absolutely absurd they should have put them inside and $35 is flea market prices I mean come on people really this is a second hand thrift store this isn't an antique mall yes the veterans run it the money goes back to them but with some of these other prices $40 for some of the tools most the garage sales are anywhere from 5 to 25 and they're either gently used or brand new. The staff here are friendly they're helpful. But I get the feeling that whoever is doing the the price comparison for the items for outside is just referring to eBay high prices and not a lot of folks around in that particular area can afford those kind of prices. Went in to get some tile and looking at the electronics I saw an Xbox with no hard drive no cables and no controller for $38 and I looked for the cables didn't find any I asked them if they said it worked they didn't know if you guys don't test them it should be considerably cheaper but if you guys have tested the electronics then it should be at a different price. Just like I was about to buy a wine fridge about a month and a half ago it was $35 the fan works the light works but after 20 minutes it wasn't getting cold so it's a good thing I tested there before taking it home and wasting my money on it. read more

I was so lost when Last Chance Closed for the Pandemic. Now that it's reopened I hear people complain that it's not the same and prices are higher. The thing is, some people complain about everything and prices are high everywhere on everything. If I have to pay one hundred dollars for a tank of gas, I can't spend a hundred dollars for a pair of jeans. Last Chance gives me the opportunity to have things I cant afford at retail Stores. Things that I need. So, I'm not complaining one bit. Doing upkeep on an older home , or even a newer one would also be impossible at retail hardware stores. But Last Chance has plenty of hardware, lumber, replacement doors & windows, tools, floor coverings, plumbing, decorative items and even Automotive. One more thing, they can't sell paint by law, but, they will give it to you free. So to all of you complainers, Yes the Pandemic changed our lives . Be thankful that we are Americans and . The resourceful ones will find ways to survive. Good luck to the rest of you. It's your money, do what you can with it. But don't knock what works for others. read more

So this place is right before the dump literally. If you go straight you go into the dump. Turn left for the store. They have door and a bunch of stuff outside. The stuff outside looks as if they went dumpster diving. There was stuff such as old wood, tiles, vacuums etc. Didn't look like any vacuums worked, not sure why they were sitting outside in the weather. Indoors was like a lower quality goodwill. read more

The Last Chance Mercantile is A SALVAGE YARD with a bit of thrift which is exactly why it ROCKS! Its a place where people come to dump items at the landfill and, however it happens, the stuff that is not suitable to go into a dump has a chance of coming here to be sold at a FRACTION of the price. It is very difficult to pay too much for stuff here. There is also a large "buy back" recycling area for plastics, etc. At the Last Chance Mercantile I do not expect (nor even want) stuff here to be all that clean since I can clean it.....and therefore CLEAN UP by hardly paying anything for perfectly good items (ie: two very nice office chairs for $10 total). Ironically? I go home with clean items. It is not a place to find amazing LPs. It is NOT likely a place to find a cocktail dress and shoes. Personally I would not buy dishes here unless it was for a funky project. It IS a place to find items from a remodel all still WORKING. It IS a place to find 2 or 20 identical OFFICE CHAIRS. It IS a place to find an old boat for a PROP. It IS a place to find 100 matching elementary school chairs. If you use your head and go here for the right reasons? You will clean up. If you are expecting some rare LP.....or even an LP that is not scratched? Pass it up and leave this awesome place for the rest of us.
