They have a wide selection of outdoor gear for camping, climbing, and the snow. I placed an order online and the instructions for pickup were extremely clear and well thought out. I came during non-staffed hours and didn't have any issue or difficulty picking up my items. We parked in the Union Square parking garage (2 blocks away) to pick up the gear and double parked across the street in a white pick up zone to drop off the gear. Although it's in downtown, it's in a pretty empty street so there's no rush or bad traffic in this specific area. If you are going to double park though, please do not leave your car unattended. I felt fairly safe in the area but you can never be too sure, always have someone sitting inside! The gear itself was pretty quality and we really appreciated how there was an option to try on one size up and down. The pricing was also much cheaper than Sports Basement or any other rental area. Awesome, super convenient service, great concept. 1) COVID-safe. Pick up and drop off was self-serve from the empty store, so didn't have to worry about COVID exposure. 2) Know exactly what gear you are getting online. You can specify your weight / height etc. so they match you with the right gear. Also, clear information about what brand / model of gear they stock, so you know what you are getting. 3) Cheap! Prices are better than REI / Sports Basements. 4) 24 hour availability = way more convenient & also cheaper! At other rental places, I have to stop by the day before to pick up the gear and again the day after my trip to drop off the gear, because they aren't open at 7am when I'm leaving for the mountains and are closed at 7pm when I get back. That means I have to pay for 2 extra rental days and make two separate trips to a rental place. This location is on my way to a lot of places, so can just grab and go right before the trip and drop off on the way back. Would love if they opened a location on the way to Stanislaus / Yosemite / Sequoia, maybe San Mateo, Hayward or Tracy. 5) High quality gear. They've clearly thought a lot about what gear to stock, everything is durable and top of the line. Almost 7 years ago I was leading a bouldering climbing trip to Stinson Beach through my climbing group called "Get Yo Climb On"* I was taking 12 people with me. It was 2 days before the event and we only had two crash pads** to support 12 people. So at the umpteenth hour I asked my members to sign up and rent crash pads. They found it easy to go online and follow the instructions and to go pick up a crash pad from the Union square location using the keypad. The service was seamless and while there was no human at the location any questions we had were answered behind the scenes from some amazing worker bee. Because of last minute gear we've been able to rent all of our crash pads, camping gear and rock climbing gear when we need it most at the last minute. To add to what others have said already, here are a couple of things that pleasantly surprised me: - You can visit during staffed hours to try on gear, and you can reserve the exact ones you tried on. They were also able to accommodate a last-minute request I had the day before the rental via email. - Self-service worked perfectly for me. Pickup & dropoff both took maybe 5 mins max. - Their online wiki is a hidden gem. Not only is it a wealth of knowledge about snow gear in general, but it brought a lot of clarity into how & why they chose what gears to provide (e.g. pictures of what to expect from basic or premium jacket rental). After reading them through I knew exactly what to look for in helmets & goggles with confidence. Very happy with my rental. I flew in from DC to go hiking for three days in Yosemite and couldn't bring all my gear with me. Wow, I think Last Minute Gear provides the easiest way to rent gear without having to adjust your personal schedule to the regular business hours. The process is simple. You pick out all your rentals online, pay for it and a step by step instruction is then emailed to you. All you have to do from that point is to pick up the gear at your convenience on the pickup day you choose and return it on the day you choose. Just as simple as 1-2-3. The store front is equipped with a smart lock and all you have to do is use your smartphone to unlock it. I guess it can be a hassle if you don't have a smartphone but if you didn't have one in the first place I doubt you'll be ordering things online. Once you get pass the front door, your rentals are in a locker. Go ahead use the code that they provide you and boom you're ready to go. To return the gear is just as easy and renting it. Just repeating the steps from the opposite order. The location is conveniently located near the 24th Mission Bart. Parking can be a hassle around that area since it is street parking only. This is a pretty cool place to go to when you need gear for outdoor activities. Rented snowpants, goggles, and gloves for our weekend snowboarding trip. Was not disappointed! The staff were helpful and gave us tips on the weather. Returning the gear was pretty easy too. Luckily, we made it when they were opened, so we just give everything to them in the provided baggie and done! No need to use the lockers unless the space is closed (I did want to try those lockers). Don't delete any emails from them, because they need you to click on a link when you're returning your stuff. I wanted a jacket to wear, but they had very limited choices for women in XS/S. I needed a crash pad and tent for a weekend in Yosemite, and Last Minute Gear was much cheaper than renting from REI. One of the best features was the 24/7 self-service pickup and drop-off system. Also this place is right near BART, so grabbing the gear and heading to Oakland was super easy. *Pickup:* The crash pad doesn't fit inside a locker, so the staff chained it with a bike lock and texted me beforehand to let me know how to unlock it. I ended up not needing the tent, and it was easy to leave it in the locker and note that I hadn't taken it. I even got a text later to make sure I hadn't left the tent mistakenly. *Drop off:* I got back to SF at ~8pm and was able to let myself in and leave the crash pad even though it was 12 hours earlier than my drop-off time. Huge relief since I don't have a car and didn't want to lug a dusty crash pad back home on the bus. Would highly recommend renting gear from here! Love their dedication to sustainability. read more

Finally got around to trying tent camping with our 3 year old, and we were not ready to commit to a bunch of pricey gear that would have to compete with toys and books in our apartment for storage space. LMG's website made it easy to build out our kit for a few days away in the Sierras near Yosemite. July weather was hot but being able to stand in the tent, spread out with a full size fold out mattress, and maneuver the outer jacket made us pretty comfortable. We couldn't even think of lighting a fire in the tinderbox that is California these days, so we made use of the camp stove - love that LMG rents out propane canisters that are refilled and not just recycled. I made use of the delivery option to bring some ease to trip prep and got to meet with the owner, James who's great to talk with. Found this place by accident when looking for ski pants (I had ones on the way but they were delayed), instead of unnecessarily spending $100+ on an additional pair ended up renting great quality pants for $11 for 4 days. Exemplary self-service drop-off that's enabled by their web app (they even have wifi in case you don't have cellular). Also, super friendly staff when I inquired about the options. I rented a 4-person tent for the Laugavegurinn trail in Iceland about a week before leaving like a true procrastinator, and James was helpful the entire time. He gave us good recommendations on different tents and was very responsive via text. We rented the REI Half Dome that seemed brand new. Easy to set up and kept us pretty warm in harsh weather conditions. Very spacious for 3-people, 7-lbs total. We also lost the stakes (probably at our first stop) and bought some replacements online. He mentioned that there's no need to do that in the future as he can find the parts more efficiently and would just charge a bit extra. This is probably the only place in SF that you can rent for 2-weeks at a reasonable price. Would highly recommend! things to note: - No 3-person tents (yet?) - Pick-up location is at an apt. Wow, what a great service. I don't know how these guys make any money because it's SO affordable... All the gear they have is cutting-edge and very lightweight. Super responsive, very easy to get a hold of and communicate with. I got my gear delivered to the East Bay (which was awesome and not that much extra $), and easily texted back and forth with staff to figure out logistics for the gear delivery. Also dropping gear off in the city after my trip was super easy, I went while they were open but apparently you can drop your stuff in the lockers there 24/7. All the staff I interacted with were helpful and friendly. The condition of the tent (a very lightweight Big Agnes tent) was good--obviously it's a rental, so don't expect a brand-new tent--but it totally served its purpose and was great to have on the JMT. The bear canisters were also a great deal--the BearVault500s we rented from them have more space, weigh less, and cost less than the Garcia canisters that NPS rents. read more

Great experience renting winter gear twice in the past month, both in-store and off-hours pickup (great option for those in a pinch!) I needed a ski jacket and pants for a trip to Whistler and wasn't able to make the in-store hours. NEXT TIME ORDER FROM WALMART You can buy 2-person easy tents for $20 from walmart (https://www.walmart.com/ip/2-person-tent/963396230) But LAST MIN GEAR would rent even a smaller tent to you for $20 and they will charge you for $25 for cleaning. Also the zippers of the tent will be broken, so that you won't be able to use the tent properly, but eventually they will try to charge you $60 for repairing. I was visiting SF for a few days and needed gear for a last minute camping trip. My plan was to hit up REI, but I knew I couldn't travel with the gear afterwards and would have to ditch it. Plus it would have cost me several hundred dollars for gear to use once! I try to go to smaller businesses wherever I am, so I stumbled across Last Minute Gear and I'm so glad I did! At first, the whole thing seemed sketchy - the location wasn't always showing up on google maps and I kept having a hard time finding a phone number. Then I showed up at the location and it appears this is running out of someone's apartment. But after all was said and done, I didn't care about all that. The website looked legit and the first person with whom I spoke was so professional and friendly. I got headlamps (replete with fresh batteries), a cooler (as clean as a brand new cooler), and an air mattress (that didn't even leak the tiniest bit over the course of three days). When I showed up to pick up and drop off, both people were very prompt (I waited less than a minute or two outside) as well as friendly and professional. PLUS, IT WAS SO DAMN CHEAP! I rented ski gear for a weekend in Tahoe. It was my first time skiing so I wasn't prepared to buy my own jacket, pants, helmet, goggles and gloves unless I knew I loved it. I also am a fan of renting over buying in general. The prices were much cheaper than I expected, even factoring in delivery and pickup, and the times for delivery and pickup were very flexible (you can specify any hour of the day!). James kept in good contact during the delivery and pickup times and brought multiple sizes to make sure the fit was right. It was a smooth process throughout. My only minus was that the gloves were a little too big for me and not quite warm enough. That might have been my fault when specifying a glove size, or they might need to get smaller sizes for women. read more

James was super friendly and seemed very knowledgable. We had rented a two-person tent*, 2 sleeping bags, and 2 sleeping pads. As I mentioned earlier, everything we rented was good quality and served its purpose :) James was also very thorough in answering any questions we had. All in all, this is a great, affordable option for you 1) out-of-state travelers who don't want to deal with checking in/carrying-on all your big equipment & 2) explorers in need of essential ski/hike/camp gear, but don't want to spend a fortune on things you might use just once or twice.
