The Last Resort is one of the best restaurants in Georgia. This is my my ninth visit it and it has never disappointed.

Great food! Everything was delicious. My boyfriend got the hanger steak while I got the salmon with grits. It all tasted amazing and the wait was not long at all for our entrees. HUGE complaint about our waitress though. Our waitress was named Anna H. She did not explain anything and did the bare minimum. In our area of the restaurant, another waitress (I unfortunately don't know her name) was super helpful to her guests. She listed the specials, gave recommendations, and told them that because the restaurant was celebrating its 25th anniversary there was free dessert. Our waitress, Anna, never gave recommendations (even when asked), never gave the specials, never offered free dessert. She also tried to take our plate before we were finished eating. Overall she made the experience lackluster. The only reason I did not take off more stars was because the food itself was amazing!! read more

Have never had problems at the Last Resort, it's usually very good. Took the family there for brunch on Aug. 3rd. Food was OK. Service was great. I was NOT impressed with the shrimp and grits. The grits were good, but IDK who thought chili is supposed to go on top of the grits??? The shrimp were boiled and very obviously IQF. Chopped tomatoes with chili seasoning and some crumbled sausage on top of that? Would you like me to stop back by and teach your cooks how to make shrimp and grits? What the hell Last Resort? Do better. BTW, the tomatoes were most definitely canned...had that slight metallic taste. There are many variations of shrimp and grits, but I cannot figure out who the hell thought this was even a slightly good idea. Probably will not go back. read more

A true Athens legend that still holds up! The menu has stayed incredible over time, keeping some of the classics like the praline chicken and adding new creations every time I visit. The deserts are still untouched by any competition and the new addition of the outdoor bar/patio setting makes waiting for a table enjoyable. I have so many memories of delicious brunch and celebratory dinners in this building that there is a painting of last resort hanging in my house. That's how highly I recommend this place! read more

Cannot recommend their dessert cakes and cheesecakes enough! They are all freshly made and so tasty and flavorful. I got three slices of different cakes: strawberry, white chocolate cheesecake, and toffee. Highly recommend the white chocolate cheesecake. Side salad with vidallia bacon dressing - a little too much dressing but it was sweet and acidic and delicious Crab cakes - these were pretty heavy. I took a really nice bite with a pickled onion in the garnish. Would have liked some acid to cut through the fat. I recommend calling ahead and making a reservation to ensure they have a spot ready for you. This restaurant is arguably one of the most famous in Athens, and despite its AMAZING food and fame, it's priced very reasonably. The hanger steak I got was pretty good, but the delicious mashed potatoes were my favorite part of the meal. All entrees/pasta dishes come with bread and a side salad. The braised short rib was also delicious and served over more of those magical mashed potatoes! Anytime they have a soup, I recommend trying it because they're always delightful. At lunchtime, I always go for the Ravioli. ***If they have the Italian cream cake while you're there, you MUST try a piece!! Highlight of my meal*** Our server, Eric, did a great job taking care of us and was attentive and helpful, even with the rush of Valentine's Day. What an amazing experience! This is definitely a gem in Athens. I arrived with a party of 6 on a Sunday evening at 5:00pm, just as they opened, and we were seated right away. It's a good thing we came early, because 30 minutes into dinner, there was already a line out the door. Reservations are definitely a must! Our server was very friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and set a great pace for the evening. Between everyone in the group, we got to sample some of the most popular dishes: - cornbread crusted trout - salmon and grits - the hanger steak The steak was a hit among the guys, expertly cooked and perfectly seasoned. I have been craving trout for a while and thoroughly enjoyed my dish. Even the skin was delicious, some thing I normally would pass on eating. The only issue was, the entrées are served on cold plates, which meant everyone's sides were served cold or at room temp while they waited for the proteins to finish cooking. I had to ask for another serving of grits because mine came out fridge-temp. *Note to the management team, hot food should be served on hot plates. Other than that small slip-up, everything else went smoothly. A few folks in our party tried the freshly baked cakes, and were pleased, but not overly impressed given the rave reviews. They were pretty standard cakes, but a good ending to a great meal. The checkout process was a bit awkward. Our server came with the card reader and announced the total to the entire table, then held the card reader out to our host for payment. I've never been at a restaurant where they verbally announce a check total without actually letting someone review the check, so we just had to assume it was right. There is definitely an opportunity here to make this a little less embarrassing for the person paying who may need a moment to review the check, or doesn't want to be put on the spot to fumble around for their credit card. Overall, a great dining experience with stellar food in a warm and inviting atmosphere. I would definitely return! read more

I loved this restaurant!! My husband and I ate here for our anniversary and it was delicious. I had the veggie stack and it was so full of flavor. The server was wonderful and we had a spot where we could watch the kitchen. There outdoor area has little mini greenhouses which looked really cool but we didn't want to hold out for an outdoor table since we already waited 45 minutes for a table. I wonder how the name of this restaurant came about... We had Saturday brunch. My son got Zekes noodles off the kids menu, my husband ordered the pork roll and a Bloody Mary, and I had the crab cakes with a grapefruit juice... I decided against the Verde, which sounded amazing! Zekes noodles were a thick spaghetti noodles, my toddler had fun eating it. My crab cakes were crispy on the outside and all crab in the inside. The side salad and small bits of corn kernels were refreshing and the corn was very tasty. My husband described my crab cake as too "seafoody". It had a very crab flavor because it was basically all crab! My husband really enjoyed the his dish, especially the sauce that came with it. The Bloody Mary was good too... it came with a pickled carrot, pickled green bean, and a pickled okra... but no celery.. but our waitress brought some upon our request. If you are the type of bruncher/breakfasteer who orders country potatoes, hash browns, skillets, or pancakes... this is NOT the spot for you. (My husband is this category) As for brunches like myself, this place offers earthy vegetables, with a modern and wholesome approach. At our neighbors recommendation, we were told to make sure that we come to this restaurant when we spent an evening in Athens. My daughter ordered the parchment chicken pasta which was chicken with what tasted to be an Asiago cheese, cilantro, tomatoes and spinach mix. Her comment was, 'the chicken was cooked nicely and it was very flavorful and balanced.' My husband ordered the baked chicken special which was described as a southwestern barbecue chicken mix with mini corn on the cob, barbecue sauce that had a little bit of a kick to it. Rice was included, which he did not eat, the barbecue sauce was almost that of a mole, it was fantastic. I opted for the crabcakes, the crabcakes themselves were mediocre, but the red sauce that came with them was fantastic- nice and spicy. One wine and one beer for us We ordered a tiramisu for dessert (one to share) and it was fabulous. 'Very light' said hubby Total bill was $82 before tip. Service was efficient Ambiance is authentic. I'm hesitant to knock an old Athens favorite but I find Last Resort to be a bit overrated as far as the food goes. I had the chicken ancho (one of their clay pots - popular choices from the brunch menu). I found it very underwhelming. Think: A shallow clay bowl with watery black beans, a few chicken chunks, onions, pico, a drizzle of verde sauce and a fried egg on top. It certainly wasn't bad but it didn't quite work. I find that to be the case with a number of their entrees...not entirely satisfying. On the other hand, it's important to note that the item above is just under $10. So while I don't find the food to be as satisfying as the overly hyped reviews suggest, Last Resort won't set you back much cash. The ambiance is also nice and service is generally on point. For those reasons, I bump a 3 star to a 4 star. read more

Great place to eat when in Athens GA. The Black Bean Soup is delicious and the Carolina Crab Cakes entree is to die for. There are plenty of vegetarian options available along with good desserts to end your meal. We are often thrown off with restaurants here in Athens closing between lunch and dinner. Last Resort Grill is no different and we regularly find ourselves outside for a late lunch or early dinner only to find it closed. The reason for my review are the desserts... they are really good. They have cheesecakes and cakes from this bakery named " Cecilia's cakes", very famous in Athens. I tried the Caramel cake (dense and sweet) and the Kahlua Cake (chocolate with a hint of coffee). I will keep going just to continue trying the desserts... I asked for lemon with the water and was given a few slices, normally you are lucky to get one stinking lemon slice. I loved the crab cakes. The best tasting crab cakes are ones where you can actually taste the crab, not filled with fillers. Also got a nice green salad as well. The food was mediocre for what we paid for it....$96 for three meals. Ordered water with lemon for drink and had to pour it ourselves. The restaurant charged us a 3.50% house fee because they are too cheap to pay the workers what they are worth. The lady beside us found a 24 inch hair in her fish, and we had to sit through her complaining about it for an hour while we ate. It took an hour for her to get the manager to come out to talk to her. Chicken was dry and my trout was over cooked. Don't waste your money. read more
