We sat outside when we went, it was really nice and they had tables big enough for 5 with plenty of room. I got grilled chicken with their pesto sauce, and white mac and cheese. 10/10 this was the best meal I had in Georgia! I've enjoyed most everything on the menu. The appetizers are all good but some are spicy. When they have the salmon patties it's a must try. They are the best I've ever had. If I had to say anything negative I would say that when the fish specials are a bony fish I have always had bones. The flavor is great but be careful. My favorites are the lamb chops, meatloaf (I suggest the blue cheese topping on the side it is very rich), the short ribs and the lamb burger. All of the steaks are good but not earth shattering. The service is excellent I have always been well taken care of. The restaurant has a private upstairs for parties and the rest of the tables are comfortable. We use to go to Chops and Hops and enjoy several things on the menu. They have changed way too much with regards to quality and and no longer have the food folks are looking for. Tonight we were very disappointed with the food, presentation, taste and just everything. The portions were sad and the burger was like a child's size burger, the chicken sandwiches were served on hotdog size buns and didn't have much flavor at all. Very disappointed, it took 1.5 hours to get our food! Mine was to be medium well and it came out rare as did four others at our table. They rushed the cooking process and it clearly showed. Wow, really disappointed. We sat upstairs and there was no blind on the window. The sun was blinding. I asked several servers to tell the manager and asked if they could do anything. The servers could not have cared less. Could a manager at least have come by and comped a drink or offer to help move our tables a little to get out of the direct sun. We recently moved to the Watkinsville area and we've ate here a few times. Most times the food is good and the service is a bit slow. Tonight drew the line on me posting this. We sit at the bar, order over $100 worth of food and drinks and when I ask for a bit more aioli sauce for my very dry salmon sandwich because the cook is rationing off the sauce on meals like it's the last 4 oz. on the planet I'm charged $.50 for it. If this is what we've come to here then I think I'll support establishments with a bit better service. read more

We were excited to try Chops & Hope for our anniversary dinner. The service was great. Atmosphere nice, we sat upstairs overlooking the folks below. The food was meh. We had the corn muffins to start. Eggs on top were browned on the bottom and the corn muffins lacked any flavor. They were dry and bland. I ordered the chicken pesto gnocchi, hold the chicken. The server was kind enough to offer for me to substitute in shrimp, which I happily agreed to. I was a bit disappointed when the pasta arrived; the sauce was pretty watery. My partner ordered a steak at medium. The steak was very unevenly cooked. We tried the caramel turtle cheesecake for dessert. Nice. I have been dining here for the last three years. For the last year or two, it has been consistently disappointing. The staff are pretty rude unless I am with my husband or sons. The women that work there are usually pretty rude and inattentive. Bar staff, especially. The little blonde hostess is a sweetheart though. Chops has become a sports bar with disgruntled middle age men trying to avoid going home to their families. The food had been decent enough for my family and friends to keep coming back, but now it is almost difficult to eat. Maybe they started using a new cheaper, low quality food supplier. Today's father/son lunch date led us to Chops & Hops. The reviews were very encouraging, but it was actually by the recommendation of a good friend that I was drawn here. As many of the reviews have stated, the service is excellent. We were among the first customers to arrive just after opening, so we had the full attention of our server. I drifted around the restaurant taking photo's while my son and his girlfriend decided on what they wanted from the menu. I'd already checked out the menu online, so I was certain of what I would order. While taking photo's I encountered one of the owners highly curious as to why I was taking pics. She was extremely pleasant and we spent a few moments chatting, particularly about what menu recommendation would she suggest as well as my gushing over the gorgeous tin ceiling in the second floor seating area. THE FOOD Although the menu is chef inspired, it is fairly simple. We ordered the following: * HEART ATTACK BURGER (3.5 stars) | $10 Cheddar cheese, fried egg, peppered bacon, crispy onions and rosemary aioli served with seasoned fries. Excellent choice and had nice flavor. The egg was perfectly cooked and not too runny while the burger was not difficult to eat when cut in half. It's only downfall was the temperature. It was well done instead of medium well as I had asked, so it was a bit dry. Next time I will order it medium. * CHOPS BURGER (3.5 stars) | $9 On par with the Heart Attack Burger. Also best if ordered medium. * SEAFOOD & GRITS (5 stars) | $19 Three large shrimp & scallops served with two triangular cheddar grit cakes and topped with grilled asparagus, bacon/tomato confetti with a white wine dijon cream sauce. This dish was pure perfection. I could not have asked for anything better, except it was my sons and not mine! The grit cakes were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside with a hint of spice. The scallops were delightful and the shrimp were outstanding. This is a definite must try dish although I thought it was a tad overpriced for lunch. * Fried Green Tower (2.75 stars) | $8 Fried green tomatoes, goat cheese, roasted red pepper aioli and spinach chiffonade. Nicely cooked but if you follow my reviews you know I prefer sweet chutney or a sweet aioli over any other sauce due to the bitter nature of fried green tomatoes. Could have used a little more seasoning also. They were okay, but I doubt if I would order them again. * CRAB CAKE (2.5 stars) | $5 when added to meal I must admit I was severely disappointed with the side of the crab cakes, which are really crab balls. The plus was they seemed to have lots of crab meat and very little filler, but the negative was the taste and size didn't justify the price. The crab meat itself tasted canned to me and not fresh, but that's only my opinion. Also, I didn't like either of the dipping sauces it came with (one was horse radish based). * COMPLIMENTARY CHIPS (2 stars) | $0 I'm actually being very generous with the stars here because I didn't like the chips at all. I appreciated the creativity, but I've had similar chips at other restaurants and enjoyed them much more. The chips themselves tasted overly done and the sauce topping was bland and didn't really add enough flavor to overcome the burnt taste. FINAL THOUGHTS Chops & Hops is a great looking restaurant with local art pieces draping its walls, including a gorgeous B&W canvas print of a covered bridge that I reviewed a few months back! The staff is very friendly and the service is everything you would expect. Had I stuck to the Seafood & Grits this would have been a 5 stars review all the way. I highly recommend you give that dish a try. As for the rest of our meal, I was far less pleased, especially considering the prices seemed a little extravagant for a lunch menu. read more

Order: 2 Medium Wagyu Sirloin Steaks (with salads substituted for a side [costs a few bucks more] with mash potatoes) & Grilled Salmon Came here on August 19th with my mother and brother on a not so busy day to celebrate my birthday, and the place was quite the disappointment given it's 4 star reviews. The waiter was very courteous with us as we took our time figuring out our orders, but he asked if wanted their free chips with cheese melted on it. We agreed to the free chips with cheese. The chips weren't my cup of tea. I would have much rather had normal salsa chips, but they had something else for them. The cheese melted on chips didn't account for a lot and didn't taste all that great to be honest. During the time of eating chips, my brother and myself ordered a medium Wagyu Sirloin (with salads substituted for a side [costs a few bucks more] with mash potatoes) and my mother decided to order a grilled salmon. Caesar salad and my brother's ranch house salad came out great. Eventually the server brings out our main dishes, and we begin to eat. Immediately cutting into both steaks, it is pretty noticeable how different they both are cooking wise. We both ordered medium steaks, and they are both drastically different colors with the steaks being cooked unevenly. There was also a BIG taste difference with a noticeable hardness to my steak too. Both steaks tasted bland to myself even though they were juicy. The mash potatoes that was served with the steaks were perhaps the worst mash potatoes I have ever had. I honestly think I would rather have my box of mash potatoes in a heartbeat over the flavorless and somewhat droopy looking mash potatoes. In regards to my mother's grilled salmon, she didn't care for it too much as she said it was overly greasy with a smell to it. She thinks the fish was old which caused the smell and affected the taste of it too. In the end, it is not worth the trip. I honestly regret going here and not to Longhorns or Texas Roadhouse for a better steak. Thought I would try something new, but I only ended up with a plate of disappointment. read more

Came here while visiting from California. We're such big foodies and were blown away by the food here. We got the steakhouse burger and beef dip both with a side of the Cali salad instead of fries. First off you never get a side salad this good in California and it even had avocado. The burger was so amazing you could taste how fresh the beef was and it was cooked just right and very juicy. The beef dips flavor was good too and I really loved how the bread was like garlic bread. Pretty much wish I could take this restaurant back with me to Cali. I love fried green tomatoes, but these were some of the best I've had. They came with goat cheese and some type of pimento cheese sauce, and the tomatoes were big and juicy while the coating was perfectly crispy! I kept it simple and just ordered a burger, and I was not disappointed. The bun was fresh and light, and the burger had a really nice grilled flavor. That along with the fries hit the spot! My husband got the Baja burger with the black bean patty. It was full of flavor and the tortilla chips on it added a really nice crunch while the guac added some spice. The service was excellent.
