Unfortunately my family and I did not have a good experience at this restaurant. First we ordered the shaved prime rib nachos, which were actually very good. However, it appeared the meat was just ground beef. When we confronted the waitress she said it is shaved prime rib... we just grind it up. So why do you label it "shaved"? Also, my mom ordered the taco salad that was supposed to have guacamole on it. When she got the salad it did not have guac. When we confronted the waitress she said, "we just recently ran out." Her salad was extremely dry and not good. If you run out of an ingredient in your salad I would suggest letting the customer know before you deliver the salad. When something is listed on the menu as such, that's how you expect to receive it. Our bill was not altered. My salad was average "trout Caesar". Buffalo stew was excellent, so I would suggest ordering that. read more

This place was awful. The food was way overpriced and not good at all. We had a group of 8 and no one liked their meals. We sat with empty drink glasses all night. If you are going to charge that much for food it needs to be excellent. I wouldn't have fed any of this food to my dog. read more

I really wanted to love this one, and maybe it's just because of Covid, but service was just ok. I liked my trout sandwich but everything else was just on par. The deck is worn and we had to move to another table because the top was sagging. There is a view of trees from the deck and you can hear water, but can't see it. read more

This Restaurant was Really Good last had the Trout for Supper Was done up really good. A must try is the Buffalo Stew it is off the Hook Good. Best Stew/Soup I've ever had in 45 years of being on this earth. The Service is kinda slow at Tim but there wasn't enough workers for the supper Rush it seemed... We stopped here for breakfast with a group of 9. Their dining area is rather roomy, and they were able to seat us no problem. Service was really good, drinks and food got served in a timely manner. Review Date: October 2, 2018 We waited 25 minutes for the waitress to bring our water and menu selections, and then sat totally ignored for another 35 minutes after we had placed our order for two "special of the day" sandwiches. After asking the gentleman host to check on our order, he briefly looked through the doorway to see if we were still present before disappearing. We saddled up and hit the trail; NEVER to return. We definitely should have walked out much earlier. Tucked within the beautiful Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway is the Latchstring Restaurant. With an amazing 100 year old history, this log style building is a true time travel experience. The Latchstring offered a family friendly casual dinning experience with beautiful views and great food. I had the Vegetarian Melt with spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, swiss cheese & pesto aioli on toasted sourdough. While I really enjoyed the entire experience, I would have preferred my meal on a plate because the basket was way too small with no room to put ketchup. The juice from the pickles made the fries on the bottom of the basket really soggy. The cucumber on the melt was sliced really thick - multiple thin slices would have made the melt perfect. My husband had the French Dip with sliced prime rib soaked in au jus with swiss cheese on a toasted hoagie & a side of au jus. The establishment was very clean with plenty of space between the tables. They had tables to accommodate larger parties as well. The staff was very friendly and the service we received was very good. After our lunch we took a short walk down to the beautiful Spearfish Falls. read more

The Latchstring Restaurant is located along the Spearfish Canyon scenic drive at the town of Savoy. It is the only place to eat along that route that I could find, and was recommended by my trusty Black Hills guidebook, so I decided to give it a try. It is just a few minutes from Roughlock Falls, so the two stops go hand in hand. When we arrived for lunch the dining room was mainly empty. We were seated inside, but since it was such a pretty day in hindsight we should have asked for the patio. We walked out there and it was much nicer, with beautiful views. This hotel and restaurant have been here a long time and the place is decorated with antique items and the menu has some cute stories about the history and their famous pet rooster. It's all very charming. Service was slow enough that had I been in a rush I may have gotten upset, but we were happy to just sit and relax. It was well worth the wait because everything we ordered tasted fresh and homemade. The soup and accompanying corn cakes in particular were out of this world. It was nice when we asked a question about the soup and the server asked the hostess, "did she put ham in it today?" like the recipe is constantly changing depending on what the cook wants to do. That's just awesome. We mainly ordered sandwiches. I had the flatbread with mozzarella, tomatoes, and pesto. Overall everyone was really happy with our meals. I'd absolutely recommend this stop for a meal along the scenic drive route. (Luckily it's good, because it's your only choice unless you packed a lunch). read more

This is a charming little restaurant in the middle of beautiful Spearfish Canyon with lots of history. After a morning of hiking to nearby waterfalls, this was the perfect place to relax & have lunch. I decided to try the pork philly since it seemed a bit different from your typical philly. It was great and not to heavy with thinly sliced pieces of white pork meat. The queso cheese was a nice touch. I also got a side of cheese curds and they were so delicious. On the menu, it said they were voted the best in South Dakota and I fully agree. The service was good even with the new server who was very kind. read more

Since we were staying at Spearfish Canyon Lodge this winter, we had to give this restaurant a try. It was adorable from the outside log cabin look, which led into the the complete cabin feel into the inside as well. We were quickly seated for breakfast near the large windows over looking the beautiful view. The decor screamed an authentic cabin-life and was very homey! The food was a decent portion and appropriately priced. I had a delicious veggie omelet with toast and homemade jam. The service was sort of slow for how dead the restaurant was in the middle of winter, but they were so friendly! There were so many crafty things there made from locals that I wanted to buy. Give it a try if you are out this way. After breakfast the server explained to us how to get down to the frozen falls to take some awesome pics! read more

The Restaurant is located in Savoy, SD (address is Lead) which is in the Spearfish Canyon. The restaurant is right next to the Spearfish Creek and Spearfish Canyon Lodge with excellent views of the canyon. We ate on the Patio, but the Log Cabin restaurant also has lots of seating inside. Eating on the Patio was great with great views (but the flies were a little annoying). We had 4 of us eating. My youngest ordered off the kids menu and had spaghetti, which he loved. We also ate the Garlic Ribeye, the Grilled Amaretto Salmon, and the Flatbread Sandwich. All were excellent. In addition we had the broccoli soup and beef stew as appetizers and both were excellent, spicy and very tasty. Also the bread pudding was to die for. All in all we loved the experience. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. The only thing was a miscommunication about the dessert. We wanted 1 bread pudding with 4 spoons and got 4 bread puddings. (The family will be having bread pudding for breakfast this morning from the leftovers from our meal). We had breakfast at Latchstring on most of our stay in Spearfish Canyon. One person in my party always had the campsite breakfast which was eggs toast and a protein choice and I loved their French toast. One time there was an all you can eat breakfast buffet which had everything on their breakfast menu on it. We were always seated by the windows and could hear the rushing water of the creek that runs thru their property as well as a view of the canyon. I wasn't expecting much at this restaurant. When we walked in the hostess was rather rude and indifferent. The service here is really poor overall but the food was amazing. I had the buffalo stew for dinner which is something I normally would not order but it was fantastic. For breakfast I had the burrito with green chili. it was huge and incredibly tasty. Nice country inn with a friendly staff. My group ordered the rib eye and the prime rib dip. Fries were the side order and the meal came with a small salad. Unfortunately the salads were old and wilted lettuce C-, the fries were a bit on the cold side C- The rib was cooked to order, medium rare however the quality of the cut was poor; it was very fatty and cooked what appeared to be grease but most likely a butter purée on top C-. The prime rib dip was very good, meat was tender and tasty. B+. Desserts were excellent, bread pudding and a chocolate lava cake. We stopped here for a quick bite on our way through the Spearfish Scenic Byway. The location is beautiful--right next to a little waterfall and a path that leads down to its base. The service was good, and the drinks and food came out very quickly. To start off, we ordered the soup of the day, a chicken tortilla soup. It had good flavor, but unfortunately there were no strips of tortilla anywhere to be found in either cup. I ordered the blackened trout sandwich, which was decent enough once I put salt on it. My wife had the pesto chicken sandwich, which she says was good. My daughter ordered the baked macaroni and cheese. She faced a similar issue to me--once she added salt, she liked it well enough. Great breakfasts for a day of snowmobiling. Large portions. I have the three meat omelet every day, with hash browns and the wonderful coffee! Dinners (we had two) are pretty good. Usually not well staffed (in numbers) consequently the time will depend on if there is a crowd. It had been a long time since I'd been to the latchstring and it seems that things have gone downhill. Our server apparently didn't like her job very much. Even though the place had few customers, our table went largely ignored. Our drinks sat empty, our orders got mixed up, and even though we had mentioned the nuisance of the flies buzzing our heads and walking through our food, she continuously left the screen door open. The food was decent but grossly overpriced due to it being the week of the bike rally. Also there was no children's menu. I'm sure we ate here on an off night, but I thought I'd make a note of our experience. read more

This was a nostalgic trip back to the place where we got married at a beautiful waterfall near by 28 years ago. The place had changed completely. The old but quaintly run down inn had been replaced with a lovely log structure. The deck that literally used to hang out over the canyon had a new deck that merely "looks" over Spearfish Canyon. We were the first people in the dining room. The staff was friendly and tried their best to ignore the fact that we had poured champagne (our own) into our orange juice. A great building with an interesting history. It's really the only restaurant in the area and therefore could serve mediocre food to a captive audience BUT they do not. It is casual, comfortable with good filling food. Had very good walleye for dinner. Husband had fried steak, which in Texas we would call Chicken Fried Steak. It was good, nice coating and flavorful gravy. Also ate breakfast there and it was excellent--scrambled eggs, sausage pancakes, toast. Waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. My only recommendation is that if there is a tour bus, plan dinner accordingly. They apparently block out a time for the bus to eat that disallows the non-bus people to eat during that time. read more

My husband and I ate lunch here with my brother & sister in law. The weather was beautiful. They do have outdoor seating but it was pretty windy, so we stayed inside. We had 4 different entrees, all of which were very good. Everyone thought my husband's buffalo stew was the best! The best thing was my husband's buffalo stew in a bread bowl I had a bite because I had never had buffalo. My hamburger was ok a bit dry but fair and quite large. Beautiful setting they have outside patio an option not offered to us. Now for the reason for only 2 stars the service was very slow the place was not that busy but was going to over look. When we had decided we were done we tried for 15 minutes to get our waitresses attention to no avail. She was at the hostess stand with our water boy yacking so my husband went to ask for a box and our bill. She walked away as he approached the young man brought me a box . She continued to ignore us for 10 more minutes. Finally came over and asked if we wanted desert my husband told her no just the bill he had asked for 10 minutes ago. Even to this point we still planned on leaving a tip but when she came up and angrily threw the bill on the table with a scowl on her face we decided no way. We asked when we payed to make sure tip was not automatically added since we were staying at the lodge and charging to our room. She made a comment about how busy she was we told her that was no excuse for her behavior and the fact that she was still being confrontational. Two of us have to eat gluten free and the owner provided us with several options including gluten free sandwich bread which was great. Several reviews ding them on their food; we found it to be decent - no five star rating - but good plain food. This was quite possibly the worst experience in a restaurant I have ever had. To start, we walked in to a quietest atmosphere ever. No music, no talking, just the depressing clink of silverware ripping into uneventful food. Strike one. We got there moments after they switched over for lunch and we wanted breakfast which was a bummer but I don't hold that against them. What I DO hold against them is the buffet they offered us first was disgusting, cold and soggy. Strike two. So we ordered off of the lunch menu; BLT, chicken ceaser wrap, a side of fries and some flatbread burger. The bacon on the BLT was chewy and cold, the lettuce was slimy and wilted, the toasted bread it was on was hard as a rock, I barely made it through half of it before I was tired of ripping open the roof of my mouth. The chicken ceaser wrap was lettuce, huge chunks of tomatoes, and chicken, no ceaser, no dressing at all. The fries were cold, soggy and limp. Strike three. In addition, our drinks were forgotten or screwed up, it took 30 minutes after ordering to get our very simple order and they were NOT busy so the turnover for that ticket should have been about 10 minutes at the most. The staff seemed incompetent, untrained, and over all negligent of the primary tasks of serving, like making sure customers are happy. I will never go back to this restaurant. It is clear that they do not care about the quality of food, or the satisfaction of their customers. There are many quality establishments within another 20 minutes of his place, like Lewies on the way to Lead, which is where we ended up and was a pleasant alternative to the carelessness and neglect we experienced at the Latchstring. I am not complaining for the sake of complaining. As a cook and service industry worker for many years I hope that management will take these scathing reviews into serious consideration and turn this place around. It is true what other reviewers have said in that this is the only option for food in this area and they at least try. Our side salads were very meager, as another reviewer pointed out. In most places this would be considered a garnish. The one great thing was the ranch dressing, which tasted homemade. We both ordered buffalo burgers. We were not asked a temperature and they were well done. Since buffalo is a very lean meat, well done means very dry. These are $13 burgers, which I'm also pretty confident are pre-formed. The burgers didn't have any condiments when served and after waiting 10 minutes for mayo while the burgers cooled off, my spouse got up and went and found some mayo himself. The food was acceptable, but the service was pretty mediocre overall. Our server was very nice but her time was being monopolized by a single older guy and she didn't tear herself away which resulted in all of her other customers being ignored. Every time she approached a table she apologised. She did not check back with us after our burgers were served. She did mention she had only been there a week, so perhaps this will improve when she realises her income could be greater. We would have ordered dessert, but it wasn't offered and we were tired of being ignored anyway. Overall, this is an okay oasis with no other nearby options, but of you're in a hurry it would be best to just go on to the next town. My wife and I stopped after a full day of hiking at Devils Tower we drove the scenic route through Spearfish Canyon and happened across the Latchstring and decided to stop. Our first indication of a problem should have been the help wanted sign walking in looking for a cook. The garlic ribeye was dreadful. It, along with the vegetables we both had, were like eating a salt lick you put up for deer. It was supposed to have some garlic butter on it but it was buried under the garlic butter and could taste nothing else. I am not sure what market they buy their ribeye from (they list the price as market price) but $31.99 for that atrocity alone makes it a 1 star. Based on my and my wife's dish, the menu is in serious need of an overhaul from a new chef. Great location but the food was far from great. read more
