Yes, I live in North Carolina, and so this is a crazy thing to say, but these are the best ribs I have ever had in North Carolina! A little personal info, I have been eating ribs all over the nation for decades now,, and I was raised in the South, Florida to be exact. When I was in grade school, my father brought me to Geech's Pig Meat BBQ, and they specialized in a hot yellow mustard base sauce that is applied while the ribs are being smoked. This is still my favorite way to have some ribs. But a good hot yellow mustard sauce is tough to find at a restaurant. The next best ribs I have found in the nation are in North Carolina, a little place in Goldsboro that is no longer there. However, today I have found an amazing batch of ribs like you've probably never tried before. And it is at a place you would not think about when you think of "ribs," but these are killer short pork ribs in a wonderful dark mole sauce. The mole sauce there is made from mild smoked red and black chiles, and it is almost like a paste. It is rich, spicy, but not hot, and has a beautiful balance of flavors. The short ribs, though, are only a few inches tall, are very thick with super tender meat that has been simmered in the mole for hours. The meal included a large amount of white rice and black beans. Their black beans are very flavorful with just the right amount of spices and onions. There was a small salad of tomato, avocado, and lettuce included. When you are seated, you are greeted with their killer chips and salsa. These are not your normal fried tortilla chips. Quetzal's chips are very light, thin, and delicate, served warmed. They bring to your table with the chips two small bottles of salsa, one green and one red. They also have a special orange habanero sauce in a squeeze bottle that you have to ask for. I recommend mixing some of the orange into the green. Also recommended is to try one of their homemade fresh fruit drinks, Aqua Fresca. They usually have Mango and Passion Fruit available, and I get the two mixed together. There has yet to be a time when I have gone to this wonderful restaurant and been able to finish all the food served to me. The portions are large and well worth what they are charging. The mole rib dish I am speaking of is called "Mole de Puerco," and you will find it on the last page of their large menu. It is only $12.99! The service there is very friendly, happy people working there. They are very accommodating. Many times I go there, I get the Huachinango. That is a whole large red snapper perfectly cooked, and it is probably the best deal you will find in NC for a whole red snapper of this size, only $23.99! Small authentic Mexican restaurant that packs a punch! Customer service was good, I was greeted by a sweet lady who helped me understand the menu and helped me with my order. The tables and floors were clean so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the steak fajita meal and it was yum! Seasoned well, with rice and refried beans and hand made tortillas plus nacho chips all at decent prices with great size portions! Took a chance - received a reward. My husband was craving tortillas after church. I remembered a place I'd gone once out around Concord/Kannapolis to we set our GPS. When we arrived, I knew this was not the place I'd been, but we decided to give it a try. He had the Platillos Los Dos Hermanos, and I had Huarache Quetzal with the steak. Everything tasted fresh and homemade from chips and salsa (the Verde was our favorite) through our entrees to the Margaritas. Oh! And the flan! Delicioso! I must make special mention of our waitress. "WOW!!!" Or should I say "OLE!!!", I eat out often and am always looking for good food. I've been in the Queen City for six years and have tried a lot of Mexican cuisine, as well as a multitude of other cuisines. This unassuming, modest , out of the way(unless you live in Kannapolis), is by far the best authentic Mexican restaurant I have patronized since relocating! The staff are welcoming, courteous and extremely knowledgeable when it comes to food. The decor isn't anything to write home about but it's not awful either. But they more than make up for it with their servers infectious smiles and DELICIOUS food... Point of interest: I've eaten here 3 times and have never heard them speak English; BE FOREWARNED!!! Hello again, I wanted to update potential patrons. My wife and I recently had a late dinner here at Quetzal, and to my surprise, what did I hear, nothing less than clear, albeit with a slight accent, ENGLISH!!! 2nd time here. Even better than the first time. Food has selections like a Resort would and a very extensive menu. Prices are VERY reasonable. The Fajita lunch plate was wonderful and the meat was the BEST Fajita meat I've ever had, just great tasting and TENDER - definitely a better cut of beef. Service was excellent and very friendly. It's a small place, and casual. But clean and well kept. The server and counter people were very friendly, smiling all the while. I'm no expert but the menu seemed authentic and complex. This is authenticity at its finest. Amazing food, beyond expectations. Even the price is amazing for the large plates that they give packed with flavor. Even the drinks are beyond worth it. It's a full meal on its own, but that Consomé...I was expecting a small side of broth, instead, I received a massive container of a white broth with a ton of vegetables and a tender flavourful drumstick in it. Mind blown. Side of Cactus Salad: pickled cactus, tomatoes, onions. Sour and delicious. Generous quantity. Small side of Beans with Cheese: great consistency, flavour, temperature, and quantity. I have 3 chicken tacos and they were amazing. Served on handmade tortillas with cheese and cream. I even asked for grilled onions and peppers and they supplied them. The restaurant was clean the staff was nice, and I didn't wait long at all. The place has a wide range of food...most of which is American but everything looked really good.
