Lush, undulating practice green with about 10 holes. Free. Same for chipping area. Free. Your tax dollars at work. Yes, it's a little pricey compared to some other public courses but I get the twilight deal for $40 -- golf as long as you can with a cart 3 hours before sundown. I usually get 12-15 holes in and they left you play till it's truly dark, not 30 minutes before sunset like Pohick Bay and other courses. This is the gem of Fairfax County public courses. And I have always been treated courteously. read more

Laurel Hill is the only county public Championship golf course in the Area. It's a beautiful course with nice long fairways. The rates are higher than the other county courses. You can play 9 or 18 holes. The course has put in COVID measures. They wipe the carts down between golfers, social distancing in the clubhouse and limited offerings in the bar. They have a driving range, putting green and a chipping practice green. Laurel Hill is on the site of the old Lorton prison, so you see old guard towers and ruins of old buildings. Very, very very windy ( all the time I am told). This is a neat golf course but very ridiculously challenging due to the wind and the length. The greens were in poor condition and we were told that the superintendent did not water them on purpose which made them like concrete and absolutely unable to hold an iron, especially a long iron which you use here a lot. Spinning the the ball here is impossible on the green. I would like to try it again in a few years to see if the course and the greens improve but there is nothing they can do about the wind. Not a course I would recommend or I do so with fair warning. read more

My husband is a member here and sometimes I like to ride along with him when he plays on the field. They do a good job maintaining the grounds and the clubhouse is also very clean. My husband enjoys this range a lot, but he wishes there were less people. It can't be helped though since I think a lot of people come here because it's a nicer golf club. Sometimes they close the range a little early or close the fields for events, but overall it's been a good range for him to practice at. read more

AFTER I paid my greens fee I was approached outside by the young girl cashier and asked if I planned on playing today. Of course! She told me I had to wear a collared shirt. I didn't have one with me and they made me buy one in the shop for $70 or I wouldn't be allowed to play. They should have stated this when I called to reserve a tee time and/or tell me BEFORE I paid greens fees. This is a cheap county course for cryin' out loud. Never went back. I can only speak to the disc golf course here as I have not visited the regular golf course. First thing first: the parking situation is terrible. The gravel lot is tiny and is one way in/one way out. There are signs all over the place that your car will be towed for parking there. I ended up parking in an area reserved for apartments, but I wasn't towed (despite the signs). It is very, very crowded on sunny days. It is very easy to get backed up. I recommend starting at hole 3 if it's backed up and circle back if you want. It's very open and an easier course than Burke Lake. Holes 17 and 18 are on the opposite end from 16 so you get a nice workout in too. The course can get VERY muddy so choose your footwear accordingly. Just a note about the area that's interesting-all the land was formally the Washington Pennitentary and you can see all the guard towers. They also turned some of the former buildings into apartments which is kind of cool. read more

Superior golf course. You'll need your A game here to score. 7100 yards from the tips, 122 bunkers, creeping bent grass in the fairways, big fast greens. Huge slope rating. However, the fairways are wide. In the summer time the native grass gets real tall on the edges of each hole, so keep it in play. The Super does a great job keeping this county course in great shape. This course itself is very very nice. On my day here, it was in great condition, greens were a little hard, but playable. My issues is with the people here. The people inside act like you're a problem because you've paid to come golf here. There's a Marshall that comes around and does basically nothing. Pace of play with 2 people was about 4+ hours. Group in front of us were hitting beer cans and putters off the tee boxes or something. Charging $80+ and short of the physical course being nice, it's the experience of a $10 muni course. read more

You should know this is the venue for the USGA Publinks Championships in 2013. That should tell you this is a fantastic course. It's on the old grounds of a now closed prison. This course has a lot of character, there are a bunch of fun holes, and it's a tough track. Their greens are usually in great shape and the fairways and rough are good as well. The landing areas are pretty generous but if you miss them you'll be looking for your ball for a while. I truly do love this track! Practice facilities are mixed. On the range you're always hitting of mats (most without tees) but the chipping and putting greens are great. But I've never had anyone harass me about using a chipping and putting green until I came here. Be sure to buy a bag of limited flight range balls when you get here. Otherwise... read more

I've played 1 round of golf at Laurel Hills Golf Club. I'll start off with the positives. The course very well maintained. The fairways were lush, bunkers were well kept, and the greens were fast and ball mark free. The design is very challenging but interesting. But the level of difficulty of the course was a drawback. I love tough courses but this course is extremely long. I'm about a 10 handicapper who isn't terribly long so I played from the blues. The fairways were a bit wet so I couldn't get much roll but this made some of the par 4s unreachable. I can drive the ball about 250 to 275 yards and I blasted my drive and 2H on two holes on the front 9 and I still couldn't reach the green because I couldn't get any roll on my drives. And the extreme hills make it very difficult to track the ball. If I didn't keep the ball in the fairway, it was an adventure trying to find my ball. The hills also make the course un-walkable. Overall, the course is beautiful but the hills make it difficult to have an enjoyable round. This course is definitely not for beginners. As a side note, my group had the club's golf pro playing behind me with two other players. First, he called the marshal to warn two other players in my group who were driving in the fairways too much. I really didn't have a problem with this. I thought it was a little anal but he's the course's pro, it's his job to keep the course in good shape. Fine, whatever. But then he called the marshal two holes later to tell us we should allow him to play through. On a few holes, his group had to wait maybe 2-3 minutes. We were hardly slowing down his group. In any case, we luckily outpaced his group the rest of the way so it never became necessary to let his group pass. EDIT: It's interesting reading this review 8 years later. I've played Laurel Hills many, many times since then and I absolutely love it. It's weird that I ran into a rather pesty pro who played behind me but the staff here is fantastic, super friendly and accommodating. And the course is one of my favorites, next to Westfields, in northern VA as far as public courses go. It's tough as hell from the back tees as there are a few par 4s that I can't reach in two. The first hole is particularly tough from the back tees as it's a blind tee shot. But the course is generally fair, challenging and fun. It's a bit expensive but worth the money. What a hard course. I can't believe that this a municipal course. If you transplanted it to New York or Idaho, it would host tour events. It is not a country club, so don't expect someone to clean your clubs or pick you up in a cart. But the staff are all nice, the beer is cheap and good is good. read more

This course is not for beginners. Played 18 with my Dad yesterday. What kills me is the hefty price tag to play this Muni. As a FFX Cty resident, I am truly appalled. I know it's the flagship, I know it's fairly new, but for $95 on weekends?? COME ON!!!!! As far as the course, this summer has been brutal to the track. The greens are quick but in decent shape. The fairways about the same but need some work and the tees are a bit beat up. Now for the bunkers...Fill them with bloody sand!!!!! I hit into 4 bunkers and not one had adequate sand, just dirt and rocks. The price is not worth the round. After 18 holes, you feel like you have gone 5 brutal rounds with Mike Tyson. The putting range and chipping area are nice, but the driving range needs some serious work. One piece of advise, if there is a group in front of you on number 5 or 6, make sure you drive ahead and spot their position as there is some major blind shots and undulation in the fairways. Tee it up at Twin Lakes, Brambleton, Old Hickory, Westfields or any where else that has decent prices and a well maintained track. read more

I was looking forward to playing Laurel Hill with a buddy from North Carolina. It was a huge disappointment. First, the layout is spectacular. This is a big beefy golf course that the architect did justice. Can't say enough good stuff about the layout. But then we get into the matter of the golf course itself. The Mid-Atlantic has had a brutal summer, but that is no excuse for the condition of Laurel Hill. Not only is there heat stress on tee's, fairways and the greens, but ABW damage as well. Several greens had Fairy Ring, but that appeared to have been contained. Green's are peppered with ball marks that were not properly repaired, and many of the bunkers were a mess after rain the night before. Laurel Hill has Better Billy Bunkers, which should minimize the washout from rain. That was not the case, and it appears that they have drainage issues in their bunkers as well. The last concern was the extent to which crabgrass has taken over parts of the golf course. There are whole patches in the rough were no fescue or bluegrass can survive, and there are significant patches on fairways as well. There are weeks in the greens which could be easily fixed by swapping cups of turf from their nursery (assuming they have one). read more

I've lived in this area for 5 years and as a golfer am ashamed to say this is the first time I've played here. (OK, a little dramatic). Took me 20 mins from Arlington/GW Parkway, I have to say this course is really fantastic. I can't believe this is a county run course. I was able to play here right after the 2013 US Public Links (which likely contributed to the pristine conditions), but either way i really enjoyed it. Bunkers were perfect. Fairways were lush. That said - this is a challenging course. We played the men's tees which played a very, very long 6400+ yards. There were multiple 420+ yard par 4's. Also a few 200+ yard par 3's. You're gonna have a long day if you can't hit a drive 250+. You've been warned. Also, It's not a cheap course (probably why i haven't played yet) - rack rate is north of $100... if you can get a deal, very much worth it. Might be a little steep for every weekend play. Was also very cool to see the old Lorton prison - they've done a great job at maintaining the old guard towers and historic landmarks. Highly recommend. read more

I have one story to tell that made me really appreciate the staff working here. I showed up on a weekday one time around 6-7pm wanting to hit the range. They told me they JUST closed the range for the day though for mowing. I guess the manager felt bad for me since I now had a dejected look on my face, asked if I wanted to play the course instead, had them ring me up for the same cost of a bag of balls at the range, told me to grab the last cart outside and finish as many holes as I could before it got too dark. I was able to finish the front 9 on my own before sunset and to this day think its still one the best gestures given to a customer from any course I've ever played at! I play a lot of golf and this is my FAVORITE course in the DC area. It is a true test of all facets of your game. The white tees are 6300 yards, which is where the average golfer should be playing from. I would only recommend the blues for the single digit handicappers that also hit it long. The fairways make most of the holes grip it and rip it, but all the elevation changes, properly placed fairway and greenside bunkers, and fast greens make every shot a challenge. The range they have has the best practice balls in the area. Always new and clean balls! Mats are in great condition and the rubber tees installed allow you to insert your own tee into them to get the right height for your driver. A bag of balls though is pricier than other places in the area, but worth it to me to actually use balls in good shape. The practice area is also great and has multiple pins for practicing chip shots and bunker shots. There is a separate putting area as well so you can get a feel for the fast greens. For people complaining about the price all I can say is what do you expect to pay for one of the best courses in the area? Pricing is comparable to Westfields, PB Dye, Lake Presidential, etc but the layout and conditions of Laurel Hill are better IMO. read more

Fairways were in ok shape, not lush but decent. Greens were nice, sand traps were in good shape w "real" sand. The course will punish you though, so keep it in the fairway & play the tee box that suits your game. Hot dog @ the grille was outstanding. read more

To the Laurel Hill gang and the abusive manager who runs this terrible establishment, After finishing my round of 17 holes on Wednesday, 9/20/2017, I have to say it was the worst golfing experience of not just my entire life, but the lives of all eight members of our league that day. We were continually told on just about every other hole on the front nine to speed up play, yet no team was pressing behind. If they were, we would have allowed them to play through. Finally, the manager of the course apparently had enough of our average, normal pace of play (we finished the round in 4 hours). On number 8, he proceeded to berate us and yell at us and argue with us telling us that we were playing way to slow. He said we were on pace to play a 6 hour round. We, at this point were a bit tired of his accusations and abuse. However, we didn't raise our voices and proceeded to tell him that we are playing as fast as we can. He got visibly upset and told us, with anger and frustration in his voice, that we would have to skip hole 10. I was flabbergasted. I have never, ever in 40 years of golf, ever, been asked to skip a hole or leave the golf course. It was shocking to say the least. However, we complied and skipped #10. This was THE WORST customer service ever delivered to myself in any business I have ever worked with or paid money to. I will never, ever set foot on this horrible golf course ever again. I will also inform all of my friends and colleagues to never, ever play Laurel Hill golf course. The manager and the course should be ashamed of how they have treated our league members. Finally, since I did not get to play the full 18 holes of golf to which I was entitled to play for my greens fee (there was no rule that we had to finish the round of golf in under 4 hours), and since I was yelled at and abused by the manager of the course, it would be fitting if my money was fully refunded along with an apology from the manager for his abusive behavior. read more

Very nice track. Beautiful, well kept, in fantastic shape. It's a challenging golf course, well designed. Wide fairways help keep you in play. Narrow rough can often lead quickly to dense growth and either lost ball or OB conditions. Club house is very nice. You really feel like you're at a club. Montgomery County could learn a lesson or two from Laurel Hills. That said, you do pay dearly for all this "nice." Weekday round runs $85 with a cart. Not somewhere I would play often simply due to the cost. read more

Spectacular shape - lots of fun to play. Lots of different hole shapes - up (a tough par 5 all up) ,down, dogleg left, right. Views are beautiful (the overall course condition and the lovely White sand looked like a marketing departments dream - only you're playing those holes!) Certainly one of the best kept sand/greens/fairways etc - for a muni course, exceptional. Real sand. Nice to play for a change. Found it a few times - Doh! As mentioned in other reviews, the 2013 USGA Public Course Championship was recently here not sure it's explanation for why the course was chosen, or if these conditions are the result of it being chosen. Either way, you wont care. Course was great. Slope of 139 on the whites should let you know, it won't be easy. Greens were fast and some narrow. If you like a challenge and a beautiful course - this is only 20 minutes from Southwest DC - Get Over There!! Cost is a little high for a muni, but not for the quality of the course. Got a great deal on Golf Now - later afternoon - we got $38 to include the cart ---- WAY better than the $28 + $17 for cart at Haines point (East Potomac) read more

Grossly over priced and over rated. The staff was rude and seemed to be inconvenienced by the paying patrons. And when was it proper golf etiquette to not repair your divets and ball marks. The course was littered all over with them. I know this is a public course, but to rate yourself as one of the best, let's not kid ourselves. If you are going to charge based on your reputation, your quality better improve. I would recommend that the rates be drastically reduced or bring in a new staff to get the course to the quality that they are currently charging for. Really a disappointing experience. read more

Recently, I had the opportunity to frequent the Laural Hill GC in Lorton, VA. A friend of mine had been urging me to play it for years, however, the time never permitted itself, until 2011 (Dec). After reading about the course, and moving only less than an hour away, I took up the prolonged opportunity. The first time I played it, I used a discounted book for golf that ended at the end of the calender year, and I happen to play it for less than the $79 they were asking. I played with a couple guys who had played before and I enjoyed to knowledge they shared. Even to the point where one of the fellows, gave me another discounted coupon to play it the next day (Dec.31). And I played it with another good grouping and had little to do with the Pro Shop Staff, et al, because both times I was pressed for time to get on the tee box. However, the last time, I did have an encounter with not only the staff, the Pro (so called pro, whom lacked Professionalism) and to my great dismay, a General Manager, whom I have to admit, lacked all courtesy to the clubs guest (me in particular). I've been in the customer service business running my own business for over twenty years, and I have to say, this was ALL POOR! From the lack of professionalism in the male staff all the way up to the General Manager of the club, I might not be heading back. But if I do, I hope to have VERY Little to do with the staff in the Pro Shop; and especially the General Manager. I'm awarding two Stars, only because I can't give 1-3/4 Stars which would be fair, but the course deserved the Respect the staff lacks! read more

This is a $95 muni. I would be hopping mad if I were a Fairfax Co resident getting hit up for that kind of money to play a course built with my tax dollars. Construction is decent, although I always seem to come away from my rounds here with more wear and tear on the soles of my irons than I do from other courses. The pace of play is usually slow, typical of a muni. The grill room in their spacious club house is decent, but sometimes slow to crank out simple things like hot dogs. The range has been mats only when I have played there. The chipping green is near by and a nice feature. The layout has a lot of contour and makes for some interesting holes. The location is decent for DC residents. I'd play this course more if it didn't beat up my clubs and wasn't priced like a top end daily fee track. read more

If you are a history buff like me, aim for a round of 18 at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va. Tucked nicely into suburban Va countryside is an incredible gem. The golf course sits on the grounds of Laurel Hill Park. I posted some pics of the fairways, idealic silo views, and my Ping clubs! The golfing was great for a frigidly cold Feb morning, where walking the big, long course was a necessity just to stay warm. I loved our round, the greens were as forgiving as frozen greens can be, the rough was flat, and the rare snow banks were a joy to trudge through! But the real reason I came here was to explore the incredibly rich history of Laurel Hill: This original 1200 acre American plantation was settled in 1790! Following the widow Lindsay's death in 1822, the plantation was divvied up amongst relatives, then bought out by the Feds to ultimately house the notorious DC Reformatory (aka the Lorton Workhouse) by 1913. Temporary tents and wood cabins for the inmates gave way to what can be seen today - brick colonial style revival buildings scattered throughout the park. Penal social reform was a major Progressive Era agenda item in the early 20th century, as the Lorton Workhouse was well known for providing to its "guests". Prisoner rehab and successful return to society was a major goal of the facility. Sadly, in 1917 during the women's suffrage movement, 150 women were incarcerated either here or at the DC Jail during the run up to passing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote. YAY for the amendment, BOO for the shabby treatment of ladies. In 1946, due to the numerous escapes from the DC Jail, Laurel Hill was kind enough to accept the establishment of the DC Dept of Corrections. President Harry Truman's landmark legislation created the foundation for modernization of the Lorton prison's management and reformation systems, and subjected all employees to the same personnel policies/practices 'enjoyed' by all Federal prisons. By 1956, the Lorton inmate population had doubled. Before its closure in 2001, this facility was well known for its straight up goal of incarceration as opposed to rehabilitation...YIKES... Come enjoy a quality round, and bask in the rich history that Laurel Hill Park and Golf Club will give you. I had chills the whole round. Brrrrrr. read more

The greens at Laurel Hill always run true and are usually on the fast side. The maintenance of this course is usually well done which includes the bunkers. The fairways are firm and the tee boxes are mint. The staff was respectful and the marshals were fine. This course is a challenge so I would not recommend for beginners. This is a good addition to the Fairfax area. read more

I would give this place 5 stars if they had some decent twilight deals and/or walking rates. It's about as good as public courses get in terms of quality. It's pricey, but not insanely so considering how close it is to DC. Usually in very good condition. Very big, hilly, challenging golf course. I'm a 4 handicap and I RARELY par the 3rd hole. That thing's a beast. The 6th, 15th, and 17th aren't pushovers either. You get to hit the big stick here and it can be a challenge keeping your ball in the fairway when the course gets firm and fast. Play it - you won't be disappointed. Oh yeah, you can see the old penitentiary really well on #11 if you care about that kinda stuff. :0) read more

This course has many positives a few minuses. As a 7 handicap, I played it from the white tees (about 6300 yds) on an extremely windy day on a wet course. Some observations: Play. The course is very fair for about 15 or so holes. But the long par 5 (575 yds, very uphill) is simply unfair. Another uphill par 4 of more than 400 yards was unreachable as well for most golfers. Finally, the bunkering was a bit severe. On the plus side, the course was in fine condition, and only a few blind shots (a handful of tee shots; my feeling is there should be none). The greens, even on this municipal, rolled true and fast enough. The landing areas were generous, and the trouble around the greens (except the bunkers) isn't too tough. Pace. We played on a Saturday morning. But because of 30 mph winds, it was practically empty. Still, the group in front of us (despite there being no one in front of them) really dragged, taking forever to search for lost balls and putting out. One marshal talked to them, but it did no good and he didn't stay on them. The next marshal we saw was looking for lost balls in the rough on 18! That's bad on two counts: goofing off instead of maintaining pace of play and being on the 18th hole, where it is too late to do anything. Service. What service? There were a lot of guys standing around, but they weren't doing anything. This was true both before and after the round. There was almost no food/beverage service at the turn--one overworked bartender/waitress and almost no menu to speak of. Even grabbing a quick soda and snack was impossible. And there was zero on the course itself, either in a stand or a cart. For a course that likes to pretend it is resort-level (with a $100 greens fee), this is inadequate. Finally, why is it that municipal courses in Fairfax offer no resident rates? How lame is that? I'll play it again, but on a weekday (a third less expensive) and in more benign conditions. read more

Played here again this past weekend. No change to the miserable staff. It's almost like they don't realize they are in the hospitality business and think they are doing you some favor by allowing you to play there. The course was in moderately better condition from the last time I played here. I was wishfully thinking that they had cleaned up some of the details for the PubLinks tournament that they hosted earlier this year, but it had some of the same issues. Greens -- They were in the best shape I've ever seen, but it's obvious that the patrons here just don't care about the course and do not understand the proper way to repair a ballmark. On every single green i encountered at least 4-5 unrepaired ballmarks. The greens seem to have overly sandy soil and ballmarks are very difficult to repair. Jam a pronged tool in and pry and the grass and sand will disintegrate. I found pushing down the high spot with my thumb and using a normal tee to redistribute the depression by poking it a few times worked great. Sadly many of the greens are badly scarred. Fairways -- For the most part they were good, but again the size (both depth and length) of the divots on this course are amazing. I just have never seen anything like it. It's quite sad to think that some jerkoffs don't have the decency to either put back the beaver pelt divot or fill them with sand. Seeing this problem the course staff needs to take action either by 1) monitoring groups and kicking out the bums that don't repair their divots; or 2) get their maintenance crews out there filling them once a week or so. The Rough -- It was in pretty good condition given the lack of rain we've had. There are a few spots were it was more hardpan and weeds than grass, but this was more attributable to cart traffic or poor sprinkler coverage. As I've said before I really like this course, but management needs to spend a bit more time focusing on the little things and customer service to get it up to expectations. read more
