THE best for perms!!! (And this isn't your 80's perm!) I don't often go to salons - it always disappointing and I'd rather cut and style my hair myself to save the money. But after giving myself a perm over 20 years ago, I swore to never do that again. (It's WAY too hard to roll your own hair.) My long layered hair needed a boost. I have a lot of it, but the stands are fine. As I age it seems like it gets harder and harder to do what I want it to. So I decided to seek out a perm specialist. Searching yelp for help, I came across Laurie Ann. Although she did not have any perm reviews, her other reviews were so glowing that I decided to give her a try. Every other stylist has at least some negative reviews, so I figured this might be a safe place for me to go. And I'm so glad I did!!! Laurie Ann is truly at the top of her game. She continues to stay on top of all hair trends and keeps her methods current, using only the best products and the best techniques. My long hair is now full of body and beautiful spiral curls! Not too tight, and not too loose, the curl is gorgeous! I also took my daughter to Laurie Ann several days after doing my own hair. She wanted a looser wavy perm for the sake of body with a little wave. And her hair also came out as she was hoping. Beautiful loose waves. I'm convinced there is nothing that Laurie Ann can't do! Yes, she is expensive... but if you want to splurge on yourself and get the hair you want, she is worth it. And be prepared - she always adds on a cut and style to your bill, so bring about $50 more than you expected to pay. Laurie Ann has restored my faith in hairdressers. So, I really wanted a spiral perm, because I am tired of my hair. i looked to yelp for some advice. I called and left a message for Laurie. I explained I have super blond hair and its a bit damaged on the ends. She told me to email her some pics to see if she recommended doing it. She wrote me back that it would break off, and would not look like the picture of what i was trying to achieve. I appreciated her honesty, because I do not want to spend 200.00 and not be happy with it. She was very friendly and professional. I have been overseas, in Kuwait, for five years experiencing some good salons some not so good, so when I returned to the area six months ago I was desperate to find a salon with a good colorist. I looked here, at Yelp, of course, and found a salon where one person was praised again and again. I went there and found the talents of Laurie Ann Carmelengo. She is as certain of her appraisal of your hair as you desperately want someone to be. Over the nine months she has been coloring and blow drying my hair, she has always been right in her suggestions for me. When said I wanted some highlights, she explained her training/teaching of and for the Framesi brand and why the color would get richer and richer over time and why I really didn't need the highlights I always thought I needed to make my hair look natural. I had an appointment with Laurie Ann on Dec. 3 for 3pm. I arrived 10 minutes early and was standing at her doorway. It looks like she was busy training her student while her student's client were sitting in the chair. There were 3 people in the room and no one else. Yet, not once did Laurie looked at me to acknowledge me or even offered me to sit down or tell me she will be with me shortly. My parking meter was running and I had some where else to go that day after. Poor customer service, Laurie was rude and inconsiderate. I don't care if she is busy. All she had to say was, "Hi. I know you have an appt. at 3p and since you are here early, please have a seat and I will be with you soon." Not once did she say hi and not once did we have eye contact. The salon is small like a bathroom. There was no one in the small doorway but me. Finally at 3p, I left fuming. She had the audacity to call me at 3:10p, 10 minutes after my appt. If you count from when I was there at 2:50p and when she called 3:10p, that's a total of 20 minutes wait. I didn't bother to answer the call. I rather spend my money on someone who cares and who wants my business and not waste my precious time. She lacks common courtesy. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS SALON. I don't care if she has great review on Myspace or Facebook, etc. I wonder if she paid friends & family to write a review for her. I got 1st hand of this horrible experience. It would've been my 2nd visit but now it's my last. I always felt uncomfortable having a conversation with her the 1st time I met with her. I just wanted to take a minute to let everyone else know how great Laurie Ann is. I came to find her after looking for a "Framesi" specialist in Los Angeles on Yelp. "Framesi" is a wonderful color line from Italy that I knew produced a rich pigment on the hair. Upon arrival to her studio my hair was sort of an orange blonde. Laurie Ann was able to evaluate my hair and come up with base color and high light formulations that would perfectly flatter the color of my skin. She was super patient, and I felt confident after watching her mix up batches of color that my hair was in safe hands. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an EXPERTcolorist. I've been going to Laurie Ann for over 3 years now, and I feel that I'm really ready to write this review. Often times we jump at a chance to praise or criticize in a public forum when we really haven't had a chance to fully get to know the person, the store, the vendor or the service we're reviewing. I feel that I can honestly appraise Laurie Ann since I've been seeing her every 6-8 weeks for haircuts, blow drys and hair coloring. For me, consistency is the most important thing I look for in a hair stylist. Laurie Ann gives that. I consistently walk out with a great cut and blow dry (not easy with all my cowlicks!) and shiny healthy color. I've changed my hair style about 3 different times over the years and she always gives me what I ask for. She knows my limitations with the blow dryer (believe me, she's tried to teach me!) and she understands what I can and can't do on my own. Laurie Ann is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to hair. She only uses the best products and it has made an amazing difference in my hair. My color lasts longer than it ever did, it's healthy and shiny and easy to style. Time management is important for all of us, and that is another quality in which I really respect Laurie Ann for. I never have to wait to get into the chair, she's as punctual as I am. She's easy to communicate with, just send an email and you'll get an outlook calendar appointment. It's also the little things that make a big difference. She'll remember your birthday, she'll write down your information in her book, she'll remember you at Christmas time. Top-flight colorist - best I've ever had. I moved to L.A. and choose a colorist randomly in the phone book - DO NOT DO THIS. My hair was a nightmare, and I had to get it fixed. So I scoured Yelp and found Laurie. She has totally transformed my look, and I have the best color I've ever had. I've lived in New York, Seattle, D.C. - and she is the best. My eyebrows are finally correct as well. I recommend her highly if you want to look better than you thought you could. It also doesn't hurt that she has an awesome New York sensibility. This girl is one of the most talented hair stylists around and she can do it all (cut, color, styles, etc.). If she can handle my ultra thick curly hair and make it look fabulous, she can do anything!! When I originally came to Laurie Ann, my hair was at least 6 different colors and some of the colors I had no names for. I had gone to other stylists, but they wanted my first born child in exchange for correcting my "issues." They also had major attitude about my hair. Laurie Ann comforted me and explained that she could correct all the color havoc I had inflicted AND bring back my hair to it's former health. It seemed like a really tall order, but she did exactly what she promised and much more. My hair is now a beautiful, natural, healthy chocolate brown. Laurie Ann is a fantastic all around hair stylist. My color, highlights, and cut always turn out beautifully. The location is very convenient, with underground valet parking (only $2.50 for Sola Salon customers) so you don't have to keep running out to feed the meter. Her suite is clean, cute, and fun! Laurie Ann has been doing my hair since I moved to Sherman Oaks 4 1/2 yrs ago...and I couldn't be happier with the results! She gives me an amazing cut every time and the color can't be beat. I have been coloring my hair for over 15 yrs...and I wish she was doing it for the first 11! She recently did the Keratin smoothing treatment on my hair and I am IN LOVE with my hair now! My hair was a little frizzy and out of control (especially if it air dried) but now it is completely smooth, frizz free and does what I want it to do. The process did take a while but it was well worth it. Laurie Ann made the time go fast and she explained the after care procedure with me so I could maximize my results. She was able to extend the life of the Keratin treatment by educating me about the process and the importance of the proper Keratin shampoo/conditioner and Infusion gel. Laurie Ann has got to be the most talented hair stylists in the valley, and LA area for that matter. She does a double process blonde for me, and until she started doing my color I was never satisfied with color from other stylist, and since I found her 2+ years ago I am so happy with my color. She really knows what she's doing, has passion for what she does, takes pride in every cut color or other service she does, and years of training, and also was a teacher for her hair dye company. No other stylist I've been to has really "gotten it right" with my color, it was either orangish tinged or too bleached out - but she just really has an eye for what her customers want and better than that, she knows how to do it! I just had my second visit with Laurie Ann and I think she is terrific! A true professional yet warm and friendly. I felt a real connection from the first moment I met her. OMG This place is just straight GHETTO do not go here! First, I made an appointment on Tuesday for Services on Saturday. I called ahead because I was running late. I was told to come 45 minutes later. So first the address which is listed on Yelp is no longer correct the salon has moved. When I arrived there were 2 screaming children, no receptionist or receptionist area. Hair was on the floor which no one was too concerned about sweeping up. The entire place smelled of amonia. It was VILE!!!!!! They were not able to accomodate because they had 2 other people ahead of me even though I made an appointment and came 45 minutes late... Do not go there! read more

About six months ago I was began searching for someone to do my hair. Luckily, I went to yelp and started wading through the masses. I read Laurie Ann's reviews and what caught my eye was that she seemed to really know color (from the reviews I had read). I've been to a couple of good colorists and stylists here (that were very expensive) and I had also been to some really lousy ones at times I would try and save money. I wanted that mix. So I called Laurie Ann and she talked to me for about fifteen minutes. She answered all my questions and more. When I was done, I had a good feeling about her and scheduled an appointment. The next day, she did my highlights, cut and style and I could not have been happier. The color was just what I wanted as was the cut and style. Her color products are top of the line (Framesi) and Laurie Ann is extremely knowledgeable on things related to keeping your color and hair at it's best. On my first trip she advised me to get a water filter for my shower (LA water is horrible). It has made such a difference in not only my hair - but also my skin. If you want someone that truly knows what they are doing give her a call. You won't regret it. I actually went to Laurie Ann a while ago. My hair was completely the opposite of what I asked for AND to top everything off I found out from one of her clients that she'll charge more for clients she doesn't like. What does she do with that extra charge? She won't charge a client she does like or at the very least give them a major discount. I receive compliments all the time on my cool haircut -- a kind of a cross between a shag and a bob that she created for me -- and I have come to trust her completely. She really knows hair. I first came to her after disaster struck- a cheap salon near my house was offering a special, and I ended up with black hair (I was going for medium brown). The color was uneven and hideous. I searched the internet for reviews on color correction specialists and lo and behold, I found Laurie Ann. She worked miracles and I walked out happy as a clam. She's also great with cuts and knowing what will look best with your face shape; however, she doesn't force her opinion on you. If you insist on a specific style/color, she can make it a reality even if she doesn't agree. She's also extremely witty, which makes the couple hours that you spend with her very enjoyable.
