I would give zero stars if I could. I used to be a patient here and actually liked the care I received, but they didn't tell me until after my last appointment that they no longer accepted my insurance. I feel that is completely unethical. I had to pay the entire balance on my credit card and then got reimbursed way less from my insurance (again, because they stopped accepting it and DID NOT TELL ME until after my cleaning was finished). I found a great new dentist but low and behold, it's been at least a year since I went to Dr. Shepherd and I just got a mystery bill in the mail from this office for HUNDREDS of dollars. Save yourself the headache and avoid this place. I wish I had never been a patient here. read more

Returned for a filling appointment first visit post covid . I am a critical care nurse who takes care of Covid patients and I was impressed with the steps she has taken .. patient areas are individual now with walls and a sliding door Hepa filter in each room and another type of hepa filter near your facial area when procedure taking place all staff has ppe mask shield gown gloves hand washing mask station no other contact with other patients and temps taken I felt very safe .. and I am a person with serious dentist phobia Thank you dr. It took some years to finally get this out of my system. I used to work here as a dental assistant and almost died while on the job. Here's the story... So I have severe food allergies and began to have an allergic reaction. Instead of giving me the epi pens from the emergency kit, the office manager, Cindy, told me to run across the street to the market to get some Benadryl. Panicking, I run to get some Benadryl. The other office assistant who's name I unfortunately can't remember also ran to the market where I was and told me to go back to the office while she purchased the Benadryl. So I run back, mind you, no one is panicking or even slightly concerned. So now I'm starting to swell and get short of breath. I sit down in the main lobby of the office near where the doctor is working on another patient in plain view of me. By now, my condition is worsening to the point where I'm turning blue and visibly swelling along with hives. 'Dr.' Sheppard is just staring at me on the floor dying while continuing to work on her patient. LUCKILY, the patient she was working on at the time is a nurse and as soon as she saw me on the floor she got up from her chair and went immediately into action. She told Cindy to get her the damn epi pen and to call 911 immediately!!!! They listen to her and this beautiful woman literally saved my life. The next time I was there I was able to see her again (I won't share her name for her privacy) and we gave each other the biggest and longest hug. I started to tear up and kept thanking her for saving my life. The next week, this dentist fired me. Reason? She made up some reason that made no actual sense and was basically her way of getting rid of a problem she created. This woman literally watched me dying on her floor and then fires me. She is the reason I stopped dentistry altogether. read more

Dr. Shepherd has been our family dentist for about 20 years. First our kids, then my wife, and then me. I had several dentists before in different places that I lived. I have never had a more knowledgeable, capable, caring, experienced and conscientious dentist than Dr. Shepherd. Both she and her staff are outstanding and efficient. They way they schedule appointments seems to keep waiting time to a minimum. Dr. Shepherd has kept excellent records of my dental changes over time. She is popular, so I find it helpful to schedule routine cleanings, etc. In advance. You can ask to be put on a wait list for cancellations. For anything urgent like a cracked tooth or loose crown, Dr Shepherd's office has always been excellent about getting me in right away and making sure I was taken care of. read more

Best dentist ever had. Personable, takes time to explain options, doesn't upsell more expensive treatments and is thorough.

I had seen Dr. Shepherd probably a dozen years ago, and had a pleasant experience. But my latest experience with that office has been abysmal. I went to see her in Jan and June of 2021 for basic checkup/cleanings. It's now Feb 2022 and I still can't get them to submit my two claims to my insurance. They are charging me the full cost of the visits. Been calling and emailing them for over 8 months to get it resolved, yet have not received any return calls. I even requested they send me my receipts so I can submit the claims myself. Nothing. No response. Spare yourself the headache and go elsewhere. I'm truly floored by the current non-existent customer service and shady business practices of this office. (I do understand COVID had impacted businesses, but is it really that hard to call someone back who had been trying to resolve an issue with your business for over 8 months?) All four of us have been seeing Dr. Shepherd for about 7 years, my boys each started at age 2. She's great. She's not in business to sell you expensive procedures and services, she's there to help you keep your teeth in great shape. All the staff members are very nice and helpful. She also has her own parking lot, a plus in that area! I had a 5 year old crying over a loose tooth/sore mouth, Laurie talked me through it on the phone, saving both of us time and saving me money & saved the 5 year old some pain. Our daughter, unlike her father, has always enjoyed going to the dentist and our son has never had a complaint after an appt. She was always a very caring but now with her own practice she is not only caring but very competent and you can guarantee quality care. Her office staff is fantastic - very helpful. I have seen Laurie for all dental needs even when I moved to OK and NM...I made appts in adv just to see her. Still the best dentist ever! Called in on Tuesday for an emergency (not severe, just worried) appointment, and they were able to get me in two days later. The appointment itself was informative, helpful, and quick! Literally in and out in 20 min, with tools for ensuring my teeth are healthy at home. There are hella dentists in Montclair ( as well as coffee, bagel, and nail shops) but Dr. Shepard (and her amazing staff) is definitely a great choice for dental needs. read more

Dr. Shepherd's office is great. This is the best dentist experience I've ever had, and I'm never going anywhere else again. Dr. Shepherd is competent, friendly, informative, and helpful. And the dental hygienists are fantastic: they are gentle and make routine cleaning a surprisingly pleasant experience. Furthermore, they don't push surgery or invasive procedures, and were very understanding when I expressed my preference to minimize X-rays. Fortunately, I've never had to have major surgery or advanced procedures performed, so I can't comment on Dr. Shepherd's performance in those areas, but I can say that for routine cleaning and exams, they are great. Overall, I'd say this place is head and shoulders above every other dentist I've tried, in terms of a consistently positive experience. I'd recommend this to anyone. read more

My husband and I started seeing her about 12 years ago, after we had gone 7 years without dental insurance, so we needed lots of work. Dr. Shepherd is calm. competent and kind, and keeps financial considerations in mind. She came in after hours to fix my broken crown just days after she gave birth! Very seldom have to wait. Dr. Shepherd is, without a doubt, the most thorough, caring and thoughtful dentist ever! She recently and beautifully created a perfect new smile for me, dealing with 6 front teeth with various difficult problems, She sent me to her lab in San Francisco before ordering the final "product." Together they consulted about the technical issues, and agreed on modifying our initial approach. When she received the crowns from the lab, she called me in for another consult, and we agreed that they weren't quite right. Back they went, and they were perfect within a week.
