I had my first visit to Newbury Dental today and had a great experience. The staff was super kind and friendly. My hygienist, Melissa, was very gentle and made sure I was comfortable throughout my cleaning. Dr. Leyla took her time with me and you can tell she really cares about her patients. She is caring, honest, kind and great to chat with. I've been to a couple of other places around Oakland/Piedmont, but this one is my favorite. The office itself is clean and aesthetically pleasing. Newbury has been the best dental experience that I have had in years (and I have many). This staff, from the receptionist to the hygienist to the dentist are so welcoming and friendly. They thoroughly and clearly communicate with me as to my needs and recommendations. I have now had 4 appointments with them, and all have been satisfactory, from cleaning, to xrays, to fillings and crowns (deferred maintenance during Covid). Yesterday I had a basic cleaning, and it was actually fun! (but professionally done). To top it off, they are one of the few clinics around that will take Delta Dental! Finding a good dentist has always been a struggle for me. I would either have an awful dentist or a good one but would have to drive a distance to get there. I am so thrilled to have found Newbury Dental in Oakland! Dr. Cammellia Askari is not only great at what she does, she is thoughtful, pleasant, takes time to explain everything, and she answered my questions. I just had two silver fillings removed that had been there for over 20 years and had them replaced with porcelain inlays. I was a bit anxious about having the procedure done however Dr. Askari explained the process prior to the procedure, worked quickly and explained each step during the process so I was put at ease quickly. After it was done, Dr. Askari gave me her email address in the event I had additional questions about my treatment. She really goes above and beyond. Dr. Askari has a wonderful team working with her as well. Sheila is the office manager and she is warm, personable, patient, and extremely helpful. The office is inviting and in a great and convenient area. I am thrilled to have a dentist who is in Oakland, experienced, and makes going to the dentist as pleasant as possible. read more

My experience with the Dentist was incredibly disappointing. I had been in three weeks earlier to have a bracket that keeps my two front teeth from separating fixed. Since that appointment, the bracket had come lose again so I called, explained what had happened, and scheduled time to have it fixed or replaced. When I got there, I was told that they didn't have the materials they needed to replace the bracket. No idea why they couldn't have done their due diligence over the phone/video to assess my situation before wasting my time and having me come in (especially during a Pandemic). The Dentist didn't acknowledge the inconvenience or even apologize. With regard to re-fixing the bracket, the Dentist also informed me that I would have to pay out of pocket for this, despite the fact that I'd already paid them less than a month ago to do the job right the first time. Again, no acknowledgement from the Dentist here - she actually said: "I take no responsibility for that because the bracket was originally put on by a different Dentist." Somehow she failed to acknowledge that less than a month prior she had been paid to either fix or replace the bracket, neither of which she was able to do. I'm giving two stars because the front desk staff and hygienist were kind and apologized to me for the situation. I will never be returning to this practice and couldn't recommend them in good faith to anyone else. read more

With Covid-19, I realized I had to change my dentistry services (who I love, and had been with for over 30 years, but too far away in Pleasanton). My friends recommended Newbury Dental, about a 10 min drive away. Visited Newbury Dental last week for my semi-annual cleaning and annual checkup. The whole experience was very pleasant and I am so happy I have found this dental office. Booking was a breeze, went to the website picked the date and I was done booking my appointment When I got to the office, front desk staff were very friendly and helpful - the office is also very cute, clean and cozy. The dental assistant did an amazing job cleaning my teeth, with patience, and checked my gums one by one which was a new to me. I've never had that checked before in a cleaning session. The highlight of my experience was interacting with Dr. Leila - She is so nice, friendly, gentle and professional. Unlike my past experience going to see my dentists, I didn't feel like I was constantly being pitched on work I needed to get done. Instead, she was a true advisor and guided me through work that I could get done but nothing urgent or pushy. A previous dentist drilled too deep for a filling, causing pain while chewing and flossing. I was scared I would have to get a root canal. Dr. Askari redid the filling. I can both chew AND floss without pain. Just one of those would have been a dream, so I'm very thankful! I switched to this dentist about a year ago and have been pretty happy with everything. Everyone is super friendly from the reception to the hygienists and of course Dr. Askari. I especially like she takes the time to review my X-rays and photos of my teeth in more detail than other dental practices I've been to where I only vaguely knew what needed happening. I had a tooth pulled at a different dentist, years ago, and they had apparently left a broken off piece of a tooth root behind. I came in to Newbury Dental because it had become infected. After extraction of the root, this dentist Informed me that I "had" to get a bone graft where they had drilled the root out. Not covered by insurance. $600 out-of-pocket. When the graft failed and collapsed, I came back to Newbury Dental and was informed that it wasn't a big deal, and that I would be fine without it. read more

I came here for a routine check-up, no x-rays just a cleaning. I loved being able to schedule my appointment online. And then I was able to complete and submit all forms online! Deciding on a replacement dentist was somewhat of a 'traumatic' experience particularly after having been cared for by one dentist for such a long time. I visited Newbury Dental for the first time today. The staff was super friendly and my appointment started on time. Before my appointment, I received an email to complete the new patient form -- it was convenient having the form beforehand because it saved me time when I arrived. Helen cleaned my teeth, she was friendly and gentle around some sensitive teeth near my molars. I completed dental X-rays as well then Dr. Askari shared the X-ray images with me and talked through some dental care tips. It was cool seeing the images and getting an explainer on how to properly care for my teeth. Great care, friendly staff, and competent doctors -- I'll be back for sure. I have been here three times now and have left frustrated every time. I went in today for a typical appointment - cleaning and exam - but after a cleaning was told "you're all done" and did not see the dentist. I have never had a dental appointment before where I didn't see the dentist, especially without explanation. I have a cavity that the dentist told me I needed to have taken care of MONTHS ago and there was no mention of it today, which is confusing. Also, I came home from my appointment and looked in the mirror and there is still significant staining on my teeth. The hygenist cleaned from the right side of my body and from that angle my teeth look fine, but from the left there are dark stains on the very front of both my top and bottom teeth. I am really annoyed that I am stuck with those for the next 6 months. :-( Additionally, they didn't ask me about health changes or medication at any point today... I thought it was fairly standard to ask at the beginning of the appointment. It's concerning to me because I do have new medications and some signification health changes. Maybe it doesn't matter for just a cleaning, but it felt sketchy to me that they completely neglected to ask. I have also had billing and communication issues with this office. I was charged up front at both my first and second visits there and told "that's your full payment" only to receive bills afterward. Those were waived, thankfully, but I find it unprofessional that I was told my payment at the appointment was the full amount only to get a bill later without any explanation. Lastly, I initially expressed some interest in invisalign and was told they would contact me after they got the pre-treatment coverage info back from my insurance... there never contacted me. At my appointment today the hygenist said there would be time for me to talk with the dentist about invisalign after my cleaning if I was interested. I said I wasn't at this time, and then I didn't get to see the dentist... it feels like they're focusing on the more expensive treatment and if you're not interested in that, they're not interested in you. Everyone at this office is really nice but I would NOT recommend them based on my incomplete appointment this morning and their poor communication. I will be finding a new dentist. read more

I had a similar experience as another reviewer. I have a filling in a front tooth, it's been there for about 20 years. It fell out and I was able to get an emergency appointment to get it fixed, that was great! However, three days later the filling came out again. I was suspicious because it took them all of 10 minutes to make the repair and I recall years ago when I had it replaced elsewhere it was a much longer and thorough treatment. When I called them to get the failed repair fixed, they said I would have to pay out of pocket because I need Invasalign (which, of course, they happen to offer). I explained that I never had this issue before and that they just put in a filling, this wasn't the result of long term pressure on the tooth but instead they didn't put in the filling correctly. I got a second opinion and took care of the repair elsewhere. My new dentist says this is all nonsense and at a minimum they should give me options besides just Invisalign. read more

They gave me warm and friendly greeting the moment I entered the office. My hygienist is so nice. She explained about the procedure and what to expect beforehand to ensure that I was comfortable.
