I have seen Dr. McKinney during times of great animal stress. Massive puncture wounds from a vicious neighborhood cat (her words -- she'd never seen such severe bites) and acute colitis. She handles my skittish and unconfident border collie mix very well. Dr. McKinney recognized his nervousness immediately and was exceedingly gentle in her manner and tone. You'd be surprised at how many vets I've seen not read my dog properly (worse, not heed my warnings that he is head shy) and make an exam nearly impossible to complete. I absolutely feel like she provides options for care when available, and when she can, she will take a conservative approach and try to save her patients some money, which I appreciate. However, true emergencies are handled with the urgency I would expect. The four significant emergencies Dr. McKinney has overseen were handled outstandingly. While I was concerned for my animals, I was never concerned that they were not receiving the best care. I have sought vet care elsewhere because of the negligent service of the HMB Vet front office staff. I would consider returning because of her excellent repertoire with my dog, however. read more

My experience with HMB Vet is: crowded, long waits, understaffed, no personal attention and poor care. I took my cat there and he was miss-diagnosed. Also - I hate to get to graphic - but the cat was returned to me after a prescribed enema with feces covering the hind legs. I had to give the cat a bath when I got home. It was very upsetting! Go to coastal holistic or linda mar veterinary hospital in Pacifica. It is worth the drive if you want good care for your pet. They took care of my cat and were very attentive. read more

I have to say that it sounds like the last reviewer had a VERY unusual experience With HMB Vet and Laurie McKinney. Yes it may be crowded there sometimes - that may be because so many people know how good she is and want to get in to see her!! I have seen her over the 33 years I've been here, maybe starting after a few years (don't remember exactly when ) but have never had a bad experience, even through putting my old dog down and the staff having to deal with my howling hissing growling cat when they went to trim her nails. I just yesterday lost my black cat PoPo - woke up and found that she had died during the night - and brought her to HMB Vet. Laurie was in an examining room with me within 30 seconds of my arrival. She tried to explain everything she had done to try to help PoPo's allergies and talked with me for over 15 minutes through her tears and mine. She is the most sensitive person to animals and people. Dr McKinney has provided exceptional care for our pets for the 13 years we've been to the clinic. She is so gentle with our pets and compassionate with us when it's their time to go. She also provided great care for a foster dog we had that had cancer. I highly recommend her read more

A few months before Annie's fifteenth birthday she was heavily laboring to breath, moisture and little droplets of water were spraying from her nose. Her eyes looked tired and disappointed with a flicker of sadness. Asked husband to call her vet and she whisked her in straightaway, like a trooper Annie walked in knowing Dr McKinney would help her somehow...and she did. Removing a large tumor the size of two fists from her chest where growing pressure on her lungs had taken place of precious oxygen. Annie walked out five day later with a new lease on life. The new office: truly a clean and spacious breath of fresh air. The pet ER, ICU and recovery rooms are amazing. Her staff is the simply incredible also. Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful For the past 6 months Dr McKinney has gone beyond what one would expect of a vet with a dog that turned out to be on a irreversible down hill progression of an unknown origin involving heart and bone problems. She got other vets involved including an urologist in an effort to save my dog while all the time realizing we had not much money to spend and billed me minimal for all the care. I think everyone knows how difficult it is when the end comes and contrary to what someone else posted, the doctor and her staff could not of be more compassionate with both my dog Ethel and my wife and I. Dr. McKinney has treated my dogs and cat for over 10 years. Thanks to her competence, can-do attitiude, willingness to get to know (and love) each individual animal, and her great skill, my two labradors enjoyed a very high quality of life into their late teens, and my crazy cat has recovered fully from several serious injuries. Whether setting bones, sleuthing the best allergy treamtments, or staying on top of new technologies, Dr. McKinney and her staff are pro-active, professional, thoughtful, cost-conscious and very caring. I've taken my pets to Dr. McKinney for 15 years. My mom also takes her pets to Dr. McKinney and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. All of my experiences with HMB Vet have been professional, sympathetic, and accommodating. I'd like to mention a tragic time in our lives when our 9 1/2 year old yellow lab became paralyzed without prior symptoms on his hind end. Dr. McKinney originally suspected a spinal injury and kept him for observation for a few days while she treated him with steroids. If indeed his paralysis was caused from a spinal injury he would have shown signs of improvement, but, unfortunately he did not improve. Sadly, cancer seemed to be the culprit. We cared for our beloved dog for two months, literally carrying him outside when he needed to go potty. His appetite was good and he loved to eat, but he was withering away into skin and bones. He was once 103 pounds. He got to the point where he was miserable and his quality of life wasn't good anymore. We had to make the unbearable decision to let him go. We were utterly devastated and Dr. McKinney was very respectful of our time with our best friend in his final moments. She cried just as hard as we did and she genuinely cared. She was so kind and gentle with him. It made that horrible moment just a tiny bit easier with her comforting nature and love. I'll forever be grateful to Dr. McKinney for her kindness and compassion. 5 stars isn't near enough for Dr. McKinney. We moved to the coast 6 years ago from out of state and I was so worried about finding a vet we could trust and that would do what was best for our dogs. We hit the jackpot with Dr. McKinney. She has supported our pets through happy puppy years and harder senior years. She has always discussed options with us and has never suggested a treatment path that wasn't the "right" thing to do for our dogs. As well her prices are extremely reasonable. Dr. McKinney is a knowledgable, compassionate, personable, honest and trustworthy vet - I couldn't ask for a better medical partner for my pet's welfare. I am very grateful for her. read more
