I brought my German Shepherd here last year after switching from Claremont Vet Hospital to avoid the commute to Oakland. Scheduling was easy, the staff was friendly, and overall we had a positive experience, aside from about $500 in recommended services that I declined. My dog was originally seen for an anal gland expression and two vaccinations. She has anxiety and knocked over a staff member during the first visit, so the clinic recommended Trazodone and Acepromazine for future appointments. I followed their advice, and our next visits went smoothly. A year later, I called to schedule another appointment and was surprised to be told they no longer wanted to see my dog. I wasn't given an explanation, but when I requested her records, I saw she had been labeled as aggressive. This had never been an issue at Claremont Vet Hospital. The lack of transparency was disappointing, especially since my dog was due for routine vaccinations. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend this clinic for owners of large, anxious dogs that require extra handling, even when medicated. read more

My pup, Ranger has been a patient at Pacifica Pet Hospital since he was a puppy. He's now four. He started as a patient of Dr. Randle through a referral from a friend of mine. Sadly, Dr. Randle moved to another practice and my friend starting taking her dog there. I decided to stay at Pacifica Pet Hospital because I feel like they are always open and honest about their charges and don't ever feel like I'm being ripped off. Now Ranger sees Dr. Choi and I really like him. He takes the time to explain issues/findings to us, answers our questions thoroughly and always friendly and professional. The staff members at Pacifica Pet are wonderful, too. Whether on the phone or in-person, I'm greeted with a smile and helpfulness. Ranger, on the other hand, absolutely dreads visiting the vet! A person called up for an emergency issue, and the staff spend a lot of time walking through all the options, and due to the limitations that day, even provided alternate vets in the area. Scheduled a last minute appointment to get my pup her up to date vaccinations and shots before boarding for a few weeks. I had called around to get some quotes from different vet hospitals, and most nearby me were either full or not taking new patients. The receptionist was very helpful with providing pricing info and availability. Surprisingly they were open within a few days of me reaching out and scheduled us for an exam with the doctor as well. Upon arriving, the parking lot is not the largest... but there are a couple designated spots. I have a reactive dog and it was a pleasant experience with all of the staff. They were accommodating and very conscious of how my pup was feeling throughout the exam and whatnot. The doctor even said we didn't need to keep the muzzle on her because she was behaving so well! I brought my dog in to have an exam and to ask the vet about her skin tag. He did not exam my dog. He came back with an estimate of over $800 to remove the skin tag. I asked if there was anyway to lower the cost perhaps by doing a local rather than anesthesia. Later I called back to make an appointment and they said they had canceled me and I would have to find another vet. When I asked why, they said it was because I questioned the cost of a procedure. We had our pup get all his vaccines here and on his first appointment they did a fecal test for parasites but never updated us on the results - we assumed all positive due to not getting a call from them. 6 weeks later on we had to take him in for a different problem we were having and only after we prompted the vet to check his file to make sure we weren't missing anything they told us he was positive for parasites. We already know I have a heart for rescues. My senior dog Buddy, Sweetie Pie, and Walter Handsome were such special parts of my life. I miss them every day - but a promise is a promise and I promised as long as there is breath in my body I will open my heart and home to a rescue dog. I fostered a dog called Sam with Grateful Dog Rescue. He had his sterilization surgery the week prior to me fostering him but still needed a dental cleaning and extraction. The rescue organization told me Pacifica Pet Hospital had an appointment available, so that is where I took him. I've taken my other dogs here in the past, but a visit during COVID under the most strict stay home order left me worried how to keep myself and Sam safe. No worries! The hospital has designated spots for you to park, phone the front desk (there is signage with the phone number to call) and wait in the comfort of your vehicle for one of the friendly staff wearing PPE for everyone's safety to come and get your pet. Sam went in and I drove home to wait for his surgery completion later that afternoon. Dr. Choi came out to the car at the conclusion of the procedure to share how the surgery went, reviewed pain medication and diet for the recovery, and offered us time to ask any questions. A week after the surgery the veterinary team coordinated to help me with a flea medicine prescription. I was so grateful they worked it out so I make my purchase online. I am so appreciative of the COVID protocol the staff have put in place and follow. It made me feel confident going there and afterward when I took Sam home. Pacifica Pet Hospital is a community gem. My experience here has made me more receptive to fostering dogs as they gave Sam gold star treatment, care, and love like they do for every dog! Dr. Choi is a great veterinarian who clearly cares not only about the animals he treats but the guardians who care for the animals at home. PS: due to COVID, I was advised by the assistant to email - not call, if I needed anything. I did email and the response was the same day. I realize that I wrote a review for Pacifica Pet Hospital back in March, 2024, but feel compelled to write another review as I would like others to know how stellar this hospital, Dr. Choi, and Staff/Techs are! Also, when people go over and beyond in ways that fill your heart and soul, it is important to say THANK YOU and be recognized. We realized that our 14 (almost 15) year old Golden Retriever, Charlie, was struggling greatly with his back legs and suddenly basically lost all muscle control of his back leg muscles. Quality of life was diminishing rapidly. We called Dr. Choi's office and, bless their hearts, they instructed us to come in right away for an "end of life" assessment. The compassion and kindness our Charlie and us were given was so genuine and heartfelt that it helped us get through the appointment. When it was felt by both us and Dr. Choi that Charlie would just keep regressing, we made the very hard decision to have our boy euthanized. We were given privacy to be with Charlie and give him lots of hugs and kisses. It was one of the hardest things we ever had to do. But, with the love and support of Dr. Choi and all the staff at PPH, it made all the difference in the world. We have been going to PPH since we rescued Charlie in 2013 (through Rescued Love from Taiwan). It is, by far, the BEST animal hospital I have ever encountered. Called to make an appointment to get vaccinations for traveling with my pet. The receptionist told me they can't help me and I have to go online and figure it out myself. Went to the USDA site, which literally says "Are you taking your pet from the United States to another country? Contact a USDA-accredited veterinarian as soon as you decide to travel. They will help you determine your destination country's pet entry requirements and assist you through the process." This place has changed and by that I mean they've gone downhill. I've been coming here for nearly two decades, and the only thing that's been consistent is how nice the front staff are and that's it. Lately, the vets price gouge you for everything. If I need one treatment, now they're pushing products, vaccines, and medications that ultimately don't work. If they see you're distressed about your pet, they see a window of opportunity attached to dollar signs and it's disgusting. I get that it's a business, but it's in animal medicine, and I'm not going to allow them to use my pet as a profit margin. Most of the time they're playing a guessing game to see what works. The best vet there was Dr. Randle, and he recently left. He was more on the conservative side and now I understand why he left. The previous owner was also good, but I can't remember his name. Dr.Choi, who also happens to be the new owner, is very nice and charismatic. He uses this to his advantage because it's hard to say no to the vet that is "so nice" right?! Wrong! I can guarantee you won't leave without paying at least $200-$300 and he has never been able to effectively treat my dog. When I inquired about it, he told me there was a good chance the treatment wouldn't work and that's something he should've told me initially. What he did isn't considered informing a "patient" of all their options. Dr. Trife is the worst one of them all. She has zero bedside manner, rude and condescending. I would rather go to an ER and pay their markup than allow her to see my pet. The bottom line is the pandemic has impacted the integrity of people. There's been a shift and it's evident in veterinary medicine in general. How do I know this?! Aside from my experiences, twice I had to call animal poison control because my dog ingested chocolate. My vet, or any other emergency vet in the Bay Area wouldn't see my dog unless I called animal poison control first. You have to pay $75 to talk to a specialist to determine if the quantity ingested was lethal enough to bring into a vet's office or emergency. After the consultation, they would issue me a case number and with that number, I can now see a vet. This is insane! The physician and the intake "nurse" at Animal Poison Control told me they didn't know why they've been getting an increase in calls, but they said all of them were coming from California and they're not having this issue with any other state. No one thinks this is an issue?! Invest in books on how to treat your dog at home for minor things. Start with an Animal Desk Reference and familiarize and pay attention to your cat/dog's behavior from chronic or previous visits like an ear infection. I'm not a vet, but I've saved so much money doing this. You'll thank me later. read more

My distinct impression, after numerous encounters over the years, is that this fellow is only in it for the money. Dr. Choi doesn't give a damn about your pet. Here's my latest experience: I brought my dog in cause he was defecating blood. An x-ray indicated he had swallowed a hard object. There were several possible responses. The course of action - surgery - recommended by Dr Choi was the one that enriched him the most, and was most invasive to my dog. I waited a couple days and my dog threw up a rock. No surgery necessary. No hyper expensive vet bill. Health issue resolved. read more

We have come to this vet for over 20 years. Dr. Hurlbut treated our 5 rats and Dr. Randle and Choi treated our Golden Retriever. He died just over 14 years old a few months ago. The most wonderful part about this hospital is the staff. They are very kind and you could tell really love animals. When Ty would have an issue he would go straight to the door and be happy to get there. He knew something was wrong with him and that they'd help him. Dr. Randle explains medical conditions very well and he spends a lot of time explaining it even when you can tell he has a lot of patients to attend to. Our friend recommended Pacifica Pet Hospital as a great vet to begin our new rescue's healthcare. The new patient sign up process was easy, along with providing historical medical records. Though our visit was simple (with no major diagnosis); I appreciated the front desk team and Dr. Randle's patience throughout our many new pet owner questions. I had anticipated surgery for our little guy's knee (luxating patella), but it turns out he doesn't need it now (though possible in the future). I appreciate Dr. Randle's transparency about the possibility of knee surgery (whew! not needed for a while!). The entire visit was easy and seamless. Though this review is only for a wellness check and general questions, I felt I had to write it because some of the neg reviews seemed to happen mostly during the pandemic (pls be kind and patient folks, it's already tough enough for everyone). Their office is still observing COVID-safety protocols, so you park outside at a number and they take your fur-baby inside. It's not what we preferred, but totally understandable for everyone's health and safety. I had a terrible experience at Pacifica pet hospital and given a chance will give them a negative star. If you don't have a choice then please make sure to not sign anything were they might do additional procedures without your consent. I had taken my cat for his teeth check-up with Dr. Choi and he told me that my cat has Gingivitis( wrong) and that his jaws were not aligned so we will have to remove his front tooth. We got scared and immediately planned a dental clean up but asked them to hold on tooth extractions before we speak to other doctor. And we are so glad for it because on 2nd opinion we got to know his teeth are fine with no Gingivitis and no requirement for extraction. On another incident they also made us give a vaccine twice. Later we found an invoice were he had taken the vaccine, however the nurse lied to us that she double checked the system and there's no record of Vaccine. On contacting the hospital they said they will Comp us for this next time when we go there. They forgot we are talking about someone's health more than $30 compensation. read more

My pets have received great care at PPH for over 15 years, but it's time to find a new veterinarian hospital. Making appointments in a timely fashion has become much more difficult, phone calls frequently go to voice mail, and requests for callbacks are often ignored. When I finally make contact, it could be 5 or more days before an appointment is available. That's a long time for a pet who might be in medical distress. They sometimes offer emergency appointments, but usually at great expense. Their excuse for the delay is that they "only have two doctors", which tells me they are not appropriately staffed for the market they serve. read more

I've been taking my dog here for almost 7 years and I love all of the staff here, from the super hardworking receptionists to the awesome vet techs, and very helpful vets! I'm very pleased with Dr Choi and this practice. I really like the appointment arrival system that was implemented since the beginning of COVID, makes everything really easy in terms of the curbside service. I do have pet insurance for my dog as she's got a number of health issues, and the office is always very responsive when I need to request copies of diagnoses or invoices to submit for reimbursement. I do highly recommend this place, the only watch out is that sometimes it may take a couple of weeks or a longer to get an appointment. Must be all of those new pandemic pet adoptions! :) read more

I went to Redwood Veterinary Hospital in vallejo for my dogs mauling accident... what a garbage facility that's out for your money! Needless to say... I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK! The team at PPH is awesome, accommodating and very easy to talk to. Explained everything that was going to be done after that vet in vallejo botched my poor dog! She looks amazing now, she doesn't look like she's in pain anymore and she doesn't look like there's any infection going on anymore. Dr. Randall was the doctor on the case and I'm so grateful for his work! Nala was very content that she was placed completely under and so was I! If I could give a worse review I would. Pacifica Pet Hospital is the single most unprofessional, scammy vet you can imagine. From failing to update my pets paperwork each time I came in for vaccines, to doctors giving contradictory diagnoses without seeing my healthy dog, to having basic stool sample results sit on their end for 2 weeks before having the decency to call me back, to refusing to treat my puppy for simple constipation. This place is a racket masquerading as a "pet hospital." I wouldn't bring my puppy back here even if no one else was available and there were apocalyptic skies, unhealthy air quality and a pandemic. O wait. Edit: interestingly enough I took the same stool sample into 2 vets (the first is the aforementioned Pacifica Pet "Hospital"). Somehow the results differed drastically. Whereas Pacifica Pet "Hospital" claimed my puppy had Giardia and required medication, the second vet declared my puppy negative for Giardia and other common gut parasites. I'm sure Pacifica Pet "Hospital" would have loved for me to pay for them to medicate and treat my healthy dog. read more

The office is efficient meaning quick and organized. We found them after making calls after calls for a procedure for our Layla and it was so upsetting to see her suffering. I am writing this hoping that I can help pet owners to avoid my mistakes. After the sudden death of my dog Lucy I started analyzing what went so wrong. She was responding well to heart medication, diet food for kidneys has been helping. On April 18 I brought her for an annual check-up. The exam took maybe 15 minutes. Dr. Choi gave her Convenia injection and another medicine to take home (antihistamines +steroids) fur the secondary problem. I have to say that I never gave it to her. Next day the new changes in her behavior appeared - not wanting go for a walk, skipping meals, too tired to get from the couch. I researched - obviously, too late - that Convenia should NOT be used on dogs with renal problems and the main side effects are loss of appetite and lethargy. Lucy's condition has been completely ignored! This drug was slowly released during the period of 14 days. On day 15 she stopped eating. When I emailed Dr. Choi 4 days before her death and said she stopped eating you said she'll be ok, make an appointment on Monday or Tuesday. On Tuesday I brought her to you to end her misery. I blame myself for everything but most of all for trusting our vet completely, for not asking more questions, for not checking every medication. I realize that it is challenging to be the owner of the business and a perfect doctor at the same time. Maybe it's time to choose! read more

Booked an appointment a month out for an annual check up (we've done these for years past) and blood test, as discussed and recommended by the vet and was told our appointment was not for what we booked for and that the "doctor" wouldn't be able to see my pet. Asked if the "technician" can do blood tests at least but was not given a response, instead they gave my dog 4 vaccines without asking for clarity on the situation and were more then fine with printing out our records and sending us elsewhere. This is a glorified vet mill that charges you for simple treatments and outsources any sort of actual veterinarian work because they are unable to do most things.
