Good casual option for decently priced Mexican food with large portions. I prefer the the outside seating because the inside can get a little crowded and congested. They have great drink options and daily specials. The margaritas are really good and the service is pretty quick. This was a homey little texmex inspired brunch spot we found while planning a family reunion. As a visiting Texan I wasn't sure what to expect but stayed optimistic. First impressions were quite poor: there was a bird flying around inside and the salsa tasted like watered down tomato sauce with chunks. The friendly and attentive staff made up for most of this and the meal came hot and timely. Quality of the meal was okay. I definitely came in with high standards for this type of cuisine but received pretty boilerplate food. Not great not bad. A loud, OK Mexican restaurant near Dupont Circle (the neighborhood is quite trendy; rooftop bars, lot of restaurants). Came here with friends on a Saturday night. Independence Day decors everywhere (nice touch)! The sizzling shrimps are good (as is the beef). Guacamole is good (though had we known that the entrees do already include guacamole we would not have ordered it separately). Tiramisu (dessert) was good though not outstanding (plate presentation was nice). They forgot to give us any utensils (no fork no spoon). A bit of an oversight. In such a busy restaurant it was hard to hail a waitress. There's a line to the ladies' room (but I guess that's understandable given that this is a huge restaurant on 3 levels): only 3 stalls in there though. They do have someone who is wiping down the sinks and countertop to keep things clean but the restaurant was simply too busy. read more

This is another place I can't believe I've waited this long to review. Lauriol Plaza in my opinion is another hot spot for DMV locals and tourists. With a prime location & late night hours, around the corner from U Street and Florida Avenue, there's pretty much a guarantee that it's going to be crowded, even with 3 levels and outdoor space. Tonight we had a drink at the bar while we waited for what was to be 20-30 minutes but only ended up being 10. We sat street level outside right next to the sidewalk, which we loved by the way. We usually sit at the top by the window. Honestly both levels are great as long as you have an outside view (I've never sat on the 2nd level). The food here is DELICIOUS! People don't just come here because it's big. The free chips and salsa are always really good, their chips have always come out warm. For an appetizer this go around I had the seafood soup which was pretty tasty. Previously we've had the calamari and the mussels, both were good as well. As an entree we had the Mixed Grill for 2. We substituted the chorizo for more carne asada because we don't eat pork. When I tell you it's definitely more than enough for 2, we were able to take some home, enough for a filling late night snack. (Yes I eat steak and chicken for snacks, don't judge me). The service this time by our waitress SUCKED! When we were at the bar on the 3rd level while we were waiting for our table we had excellent service. But our waitress for our meal downstairs was definitely terrible. She didn't bother to keep our waters filled even after we asked several times. At the end of the meal my husband had to ask her twice and the water was warm, yuck! She never brought us any napkins the entire time even though I asked her for some. She never checked on us after our food came. My husband's beers were warm, yuck! For an $85 meal the service was wack. As a matter of fact I've gotten waaaay better service for $20. But an all in all, this was a rare occurrence considering every other time I've been here the service has been good. read more

Great Tex mex. home made flour tortilla is always a plus. Their chips and salsa is one of the best I've had and that's saying a lot Bc I'm visiting from Los Angeles. We ordered the Tijuana medium on steak. Grilled perfectly. Shrimps were nice size and not overcooked. They give you plenty of flour tortilla unlike other places. We went here because our Uber driver recommended this place..... must be an off day for this place or our Uber driver has much lower standards than us. 1) the floors were extremely dirty around the table that we sat at and someone finally came to clean it when we sat down. I should have taken a photo. 2) servers were slow and kept forgetting our requests such as salsa, limes, water.... etc. so by the time we got any of them, we're almost done. 3) margaritas are not great... at least not the lime. Extremely sour. 4) there are flies everywhere inside, even in the bathroom. 5) the food was alright. The portion of my enchilada dish was enough for two. Great atmosphere, great food, awesome cocktails. One HUGE setback is the RATS........ the parking area in the back of the restaurant was converted into an outdoor seating area. While enjoying my meal, we saw several DC street rats. On one occasion, they actually ran under our table. I always get the chicken fajitas thinking they will wow me, but it never does. It's bland and just bleh for $15. The service is rarely good and the last time I went here, a cockroach walked across the table (I kid you not...ask my wife). Maybe this is why it's full: 1) The margs are cheap for DC and decent (Try their Sangrita), 2) It's centrally located so you can have dinner and then go out if you want, and 3) It's HUGE making it great for large groups. I met up with a group of 8 friends on a Friday afternoon. Parking was terrible -- I highly recommend you arrive earlier than your meet up time as it will take you at least 15-20 minutes to find a spot within a few blocks. The place was packed; it was one of the first nice evenings towards the end of winter and everyone seemed to be out and about. We struggled to find a place to sit outdoors. Eventually as guests came and went, we settled into the corner of the front patio -- perfect! The bar itself is fairly small and had 8-10 stools in front of it. All the patrons who were on the patio had to order inside and really compete for the bartenders attention. There were three bartenders behind the bar serving both the regular diner of the restaurant and the guests on the patio. We had to wait between 5-10 minutes to get a drink -- not to the fault of the bartenders because they were MOVING. The drinks were tasty and decently priced during Happy Hour (lasts until 7pm): $6 for a marg, $16 for a small pitcher, and $30 for a regular sized pitcher. The individual margs didn't pack too much of a punch but the half pitchers really got the party started. I recommend enjoying a small pitcher on your own -- you get about 3 glasses worth of margs. The food is good, not great..but good. The only problem is, we had to keep going back to the bar to check if our order was ready. There is no waitstaff or buzzer to inform us. The bartenders just asked that we keep checking back with them every tenish minutes. Seemed like an unorganized way to deliver food. I'd go back, but I'd leave earlier to avoid the parking nightmare! read more

We came for brunch with a big group, and it was nice that they were still able to handle serving a large party without giving us a pre-fix menu. We were each able to order what we want. However, we all didn't end up getting what we wanted. Some of my friends order steak and eggs, eggs Florentine or eggs benedict. The way they wanted their meat cook didn't come out as it was requested. Medium rare steaks ended up being more medium well. There were no sunny side up eggs as requested or poached eggs that came with the eggs Florentine or eggs benedict. The poached eggs were more soft boiled. I ordered the Pollo Saltado, which was a pretty large portion, but it didn't come with a lot chicken. Also, my dish was pretty salty and greasy. It was a good thing that the Pollo Saltado came with rice to help reduce the greasy taste. The servers were very accommodating to those that requested their food to be recooked, and they also gave us plates, spoons, and cake cutting utensils to serve the cake that we brought. They did not charge us a cake cutting fee, and they didn't automatically include gratuity on our bill. read more

Bland, watered down, tasteless salsa. Huevos Rancheros - Worst rendition of the dish I've had. Served on tortilla chips, not tortillas. The eggs were hidden under large blobs of cheese. Hardly any beans. The vegetables didn't seem fresh. The side of fruit was a standard mix of pineapple, cantaloupe, and honey dew that you can get from a grocery store salad bar. Lauriol Plaza is a great place to get Mexican happy hour for an affordable price in a central location in DC. I have been several times and every time it is a solid 3 star experience. Nothing out of the ordinary or overly special. Cleanliness and ambience is 3 stars. The food quality is 3 stars -- good tastes (you can't really mess up Mexican food, it is no offense just the same ingredients plated in different ways). My food this time was burnt but I still ate it and didn't complain because I didn't want to put up a fight. There was so much seating in and out of the restaurant that we didn't have to wait. YUM am I glad! The menu was incredible and diverse with Mexican, Spanish, Cuban and other menu items. They served Mexican chips as a started. They were warm and crispy. They had lamb fajitas which is what I ordered. So good! My friend ordered a Cuban pork dish. He is Cuban and loved it. The food was fabulous. The service was excellent and the restaurant is very nice. I can't believe I never heard of this place but it is my new go to once a week. I went to Lauriol Plaza to meet with some friends at lunch in DC for a financial conference. The restaurant is on a busy street and has a nice patio area to eat and drink. I reviewed the menu as they had notable Mexican dishes that reminded me of my time in Mexjco eating authentic cuisine. I got the Bistec Cubano, which is grilled steak marinated with onions, cilantro, and lime. It was served with rice, tostones (fried plantains), and maduros (sweet plantains). The food was very good! My friend and I came to Lauriol Plaza aspiring to enjoy Margarita Monday and dinner. I was a little off-put by the rude hostesses who told us they didn't do happy hour when I was trying to ask if the Margarita special was restricted to only a certain eating area. After being seated on the patio, I ordered a Mango Frozen Margarita (Mondays $5.95), and my friend ordered the Peach Frozen Margarita (Mondays $5.95). The portion was huge, and both margaritas were delicious, though I preferred my friend's peach one. The chips and salsa were a big miss, with the chips being too thin and the salsa too watery, but it was free. After waiting way too long for our server to come back to order dinner, we decided to head down the road to Surfside Taco Stand for dinner and just had drinks here. This is the best place for seafood enchiladas! Can you say yummy and full of either crab scallops and/or shrimp. They give you generous side portions as well. If you like chips and salsa then bam! This is for you!!!! Not many places can get the five star Chevy's chip award but omg they get it. Light crisp and fresh. The salsa is to die for as well. To put it in perspective, if I was broke with only enough money for a drink I would go there and eat chips and salsa until I was full. Orange juice, coffee, and water as our beverage. Tortilla chips and salsa served prior to the meal. Vilma was our server - she was friendly and polite, but a bit hurried as the restaurant was very busy. A pretty popular place. Food was cooked exactly to order and was very tasty. Kids had no complaint and even complimented on how fresh the fruit was. Vilma stopped at the table a couple of times to refill our empty water glasses and to inquire whether everything was okay. Restaurant was clean, although the restroom could use a bit of attention. Valet parking - which we took advantage of - is available. I thought the price was a bit high for Sunday parking, but my main complaint would relate more to double parking. I'm not a fan of having my vehicle parked in a traffic lane. $59.64 for breakfast, plus server tip, plus valet parking, plus valet tip.
