Every time I visit DC, I have to dine at Lauriol Plaza. I lived in DC about five years ago, and it was always a favorite place for happy hour then. I was pleasantly surprised that almost everything is still the same as I remember. It was a warmer November day, so we opted to be seated immediately on the enclosed patio that is equipped with heaters. It got a little chilly near the end of our meal, but it was nice and cozy out there. They have a million people on staff, so the service is always really good. They are super attentive to busing tables and refilling water glasses. Their complimentary chips and salsa are fantastic. The chips are very light and crispy, so even if you eat a bunch of them, they're not as heavy as traditional tortilla chips. The salsa is super flavorful and a little smokey with a hint of chipotle. So good! We started off with pitcher of frozen swirl margaritas. They hands down have the very best margaritas I have ever had. It might seem weird for a Mexican restaurant, but their mussels are also the BEST I have had anywhere. The mussels were as good if not better than I remembered. The broth is super, super flavorful with lemongrass and ginger. So good! They used to give a roll of bread and they switched to slices, but I requested more bread and received it free of charge. I also shared part of a spinach quesadilla with my friend. It was good but not amazing. If you are in DC and love mussels, you must try go to Lauriol Plaza. read more

Decided to check this place out for dinner during the beautiful weather since it offers a nice outdoor patio option for dining. We actually didn't sit at the front patio, but got seated in the back parking lot area (great use of space!) and it was encased, but still open-aired and spaced out for a COVID friendly experience. I was not partaking, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that they were doing margarita specials all night for "Margarita Monday". There was a plethora of waitstaff, which I was happy to see, and our specific waiter was very efficient yet kind. He took great care of us! We ordered the shrimp and crab quesadilla and the jumbo shrimp, chicken, and steak fajitas platter. The portions are definitely massive and could easily be shared. The meals were delicious and the chips and salsa were a nice treat! The chips came out warm and were so thin and crispy! Great comforting Mexican food, satisfying margaritas/Swirls, and prime location for people watching is some of the few reasons this spot is a local favorite! read more

My oh My.....I have died and went to Mexican heaven!!!!! I heard so much about this place but it definitly one of those "you gotta try it for yourself" type resturant. I was shocked at the location when my wife and I pulled up to it. It sit in a very ackward place to be so popular. But once you hit the street that the resturant sits on the area comes to life as if you were in Time Square (ok maybe not quiet Time Square) but there are people hanging around as if it were a night club!!! Totally a shock if your not expecting it. As we walked in more of the outsider crowd were inside...waiting at the bar and in line to get a table....now I felt like I was at a Miami club on somewhere at Acapulco :) it was just people everywhere. Not to to mention for the location that the resturants sits in (boraderline Adam Morgan and U street) this place is HUGH!!!!! I was impress as to how big this resturant was. My impression of the resturant incresed when the taste of the food was just as good. Let me say this: Acapulco was the only place I have every seen shrimp as long as my thumb and index finger extended (and that without the tail) until I came here....the menu calls it a "Shrimp Buchetta" which is a Jumbo Shrimp with Cheese and jalapnos inside!!!! WOWZER Talking about an explosion of flavors...and I can't forget about the melted garlic butter that comes with it!!! And to compliment that (although I don't drink) the HUGH frozen drinks that they were serveing to the other tables looked tantalizingly great.....so my wife and I order the vrigin of whatever it was that they took to the table down from our...LOL!!!!! Being from California, I was on the hunt for blended margaritas because we all know margs on the rocks just don't cut it. I had heard about the amazing margs here and they did not disappoint! Look - this is not the place for authentic, luxury Mexican food. But if you are looking for some tex-mex, American-ized food with unlimited chips and salsa alongside margaritas, this will be great for you. I have been going here for years one of my favorite places to go food and drinks are always good. Tonight was the worse visit ever. we arrived arrived between 9:30pm 9:45pm. Everything was good until our food came out around 10:30. Tonight I felt radically profiled. We are sitting waiting for our food to come out it took longer than normal cool, our food arrive and our order is not correct. We tell the waiter about the order and his response was we are out of white rice. so we send the food back because my husband can't have seasoned rice. We are sitting across from a table and the bring their food out AFTER ours and they have plates of white rice. We asked the waiter I thought y'all didn't have any more white rice we ordered before that table did. Before those people was there it was another party. So they couldn't have ordered before us. the waiter response was they ordered over the phone. If you order over the phone it's considered takeout. These people didn't even have their whole party there at the time so they couldn't have ordered before us. Long story short they gave all the white rice to the Italian party that was across from us and told us they was out when we placed our order before they did. Then the waiter says money is money they ordered over the phone. Thats Bs!! And the waiter knew it. read more

I am OBSESSED with this place. I have had to have been here at least 50 times and I always go with my family. We started coming here a while ago because it's a nice walk from my grandmother's house and we are of Spanish decent. I have yet to have a bad thing here. They always remember my complicated orders (no tomatoes, extra sour cream, hot sauce... etc. I'm kind of a tough custumer) and get it correct. Their chips and salsa are always fresh and the salsa is actually one of the best salsas I have had. Their homemade tortillas are great, too. I always get super excited when I know when we are going for lunch or dinner there. This place could have gotten more stars if the manager was not argumentative. The pros are that they have $5 valet parking but then you have to walk around back to get your car. I thought valet parking is supposed to go get it when you're done but... whatever. It was still nice to be able to pull up and park. The wings were amazing and the shrimp and crab quesadilla was pretty good also. I must say that the best thing about this restaurant was our waiter who was absolutely phenomenal. I believe his name was Raphael. The cons were the operation of valet, the manager, and the very dimmed lighting. Unfortunately we had a vegetarian at our table. She ordered a vegetable quesadilla. She ended up having crab in one of her slices. This was sad bc she was actually enjoying the dish. The items was shown to the staff who quickly removed it from the table and showed the manager. The manager came over and noted seeing the crab in the vegetable quesadilla. He stated it was not possible bc it is made separately. Unfortunately it was very possible since he also noted seeing it in the dish and a vegetarian noted tasting it and there it was in the dish. While he was fully prepared to continue to argue, the women at our table were not and ended the conversation. He ended up leaving and removing the item from the bill without being asked. The phenomenal waiter asked if something else could be made for her which we declined. The moral is...staff can really make or break an experience. So...street parking in DC has never been my favorite thing, and it's certainly not easy in the area around this restaurant, but it's also not super close to a metro station, so I braved it, and after circling a couple times, managed to find a spot that was only like 3 blocks away - on a Tuesday evening, I'm gonna call it a success. So leave time for that if you're driving. (Alternatively leave time for walking if you're taking Metro. Uber/Lyft feel like good options in hindsight.) While I was doing all of that, my friend beat me to the restaurant and got seated pretty much immediately, so that was nice. The service was good. The hostess was friendly, the waiter was reasonably attentive. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Not raving about the service but certainly no complaints. Food/Drinks: the food was alright. I tried the pork belly tacos that were on the menu that day (but not on the general menu so I suppose they have special items periodically?) and a chicken quesadilla. My friend had the cheese enchiladas. Nothing was bad, but neither of us was particularly blown away. We also tried their white wine sangria which again, was ok. I have had more flavorful (and stronger) Sangrias elsewhere. The pitcher was half off though, so that was awesome. Three stars (maybe closer to like 3.3 or 3.4 but not quite enough that I want to round up to four) but it's a nicely decorated space (feels classy but not like show up in a tux formal) and the service was good so maybe if I had made different menu choices they would have earned that fourth star. I don't understand why this place only has an average star rating of 3 stars! A friend suggested we eat here and we walked over from her place a few blocks away. It was between 9-10pm on a Friday night and when we arrived it was a bit crowded, but we had no problem getting up to the hostess stand and putting in our name. Since the hostess told us it would be a 10 min wait we made our way over to the bar to order a couple margaritas to enjoy while we waited and also did not have any problem accessing the bar area or bartenders. Upon being seated we were served warm chips and delicious salsa. The menu was so extensive and impressive I couldn't decide what I wanted to order but I settled on the Mahi-Mahi with a pineapple salsa, rice and black beans. Our food arrived at MAGIC speed!!!! I thought my food was delicious and the portions were perfect. (I always assume I'm going to get served anorexic portions but these were hefty portions!) I only docked one point because the staff at the hostess stand, the bar and the wait staff were all very cold. None of them were smiling they were all very serious and stoic. If they smiled and looked like they liked working there and were enjoying themselves it might liven the place up a bit. Yes, the place was crowded and it could be considered loud, but that's what happens when an establishment has great food and yummy drinks....I liked this place and would definitely return. Great atmosphere but a little crowded and noisy. However, the place is huge and they have plenty of seating. Just kind of close together for my liking. The food is Mexican but on the gourmet side. For example: I had the Seafood Quesadilla and it had lump crab-meat and shrimp in it. It was really good. Also, I have had the fajitas and it was okay. The onions and green peppers were not sauteed enough for me. They were on the raw side. My girlfriends raved about the swirls and they were pretty good, nothing to write home about. It did give me a major brain freeze lol. The parking can be difficult but it is located in a nice area. With that said, if it is a nice day, the walk is refreshing. I've passed by Lauriol countless times and never knew what type of place it was until recently. I always thought it was just a bar or pub. Who woulda thunkit to be a Mexican place? I've only been in DC for 9 months, but I already miss platanos, arroz con pollo, rellenos, etc. which used to be a stone's throw away when I lived in Brooklyn. Honestly I really, really had to pee and was panicking as I ran around this area looking for a bathroom, eventually diving into Lauriol Plaza with a photo finish. I am not a big fan of Mexican food. I never find myself craving it and quite frankly I had no idea this was a Mexican place when I ran in to pee here, but alas I had arrived so I sucked it up and ordered. I went with the taco platter, soft shells with beef. Turns out I really enjoyed the dish which came with way more food than I expected. It came with pretty much a full side salad, tons of rice, and three tacos. The cool lettuce calmed my mildly burning mouth as I rarely handle spiciness well. With all the hot ground beef I was downing my water at a record pace. I must have finished five glasses, but they were great about refilling quickly (seems essential for a Mexican food place). So what started as an emergency pee location turned out to be a surprisingly good Mexican restaurant. It's very large, fairly fancy, and has a great outside area where plenty of people were enjoying a beer at lunch. I suppose I would come again if any of my friends craved Mexican! read more

I was referred to Lauriol by a friend to visit this restaurant for what they claim ti have good margaritas. We ordered calamari and guacamole to start. The guacamole was tasty but the calamari was undercooked. Visually the calamari appeared flavorless and it was. We ordered a half picture of margarita and was able to get only two glasses and a half glass of ice. We should have ordered two singles, which would have saved us $10 dollars and less frustration. A pitcher of margarita didn't even give me a happy face -- like zero buzz. It was more juice or mixer than anything. We ordered lamb fajitas, medium, rare, and seafood enchiladas. When the enchiladas were delivered to the table, we couldn't make it out -- Bland and visually unappealing. It was the worst enchiladas we had ever seen in a Mexican restaurant. The fajitas with Rare lamb meat was not chewable. I was unable to bite into the lamb and pull it apart. It was so tough that I had to send it back to the kitchen. By then, I did not want a substitute for my meal. Total disappointment! I just wanted to leave. The location of this restaurant is perhaps the reason this restaurant is frequent by DMVers, as much as it is, because the food was awful and the drinks were weak for a Latin restaurant. I've heard mixed review from friends about Lauriol Plaza, but I have only ever had great service and good food. Came here for dinner on Saturday night - packed house but somehow no wait. Service was prompt and friendly and I can't believe how much we put away for a relatively inexpensive price! Pork belly tacos, queso (the queso is SO GOOD), and taquitos are my favorite thing on the menu. Salsa is warm and a little off-putting and the guacamole is simply mashed avocado with some tomatoes. Vegetable fajitas were plain. Sangrias are delicious, tortilla look made in-house, and we got complimentary birthday flan! (The flan was just OK). It is a nice place for a get-together and I have yet to see the rooftop seating, but it is very dark and noisy. Outside seating does have heat lamps. read more

Always good! I like all of the fajitas and they tend to have good specials that have some sort of fajita vibe to them. The food always tastes fresh. Definitely order the queso dip to have with your chips. It will change your life! Make sure you order a swirl margarita. There are a few options of swirls...get one for sure. There is always a wait. If you are ok eating after 8:30pm, I would say you're less likely to wait. If you want to eat around 6-8, you should prepare yourself to wait. We were excited for mexican food. So we gave Lauriol Plaza a chance. Quick and friendly service got us everything fast. Beer selecrion was good and i tried also the mojito, because there was a special on wednesdays. I wish i would have ordered something different. the Mojito was way too sweet for me. The brisket tacos, chips&salsa was just average food. salso watery and the tacos to dry and not very flavorful. Nothing outstanding here. But easy going place with fast service. We don't drink alcohol, so can't opine about that, but the food dishes were really good. The chips were light as a feather and had a really good taste. We ordered guacamole and it was mostly avacado as opposed to some versions that are more salsa than anything. We liked it a lot. We ordered the Mixed Grille for two, and it was spectacular. The chicken was moist and tasty, the beef (skirt steak) was really good. The marinade they use for the beef made it the best we've ever had. It was too much food for two people and quite a great value for your money. We'll be back. read more

This is a great place to bring out of town guests like Kemi A. You should come for the ambience (nice patios and outsidde seating, great place for people watching) and forget about excellent food or drinks. I have been there a couple times: the breakfast options are subpar, the pollo saltado is good, the caribbean salad is just all wrong. I like the white sangria but find the margarita swirls to be lacking (i.e. I like to at least end up tipsy if I order a pitcher...otherwise what's the point). We arrived and sat immediately for our scheduled reservation. Recieved chips and salsa right away. 10 minutes passed a couple right besides us sits down. An additional 10 minutes pass and a waiter comes by and checks on the couple that sat down next to us and takes their order for appetizers and drinks, but completely disregard us. So at this point we're upset that nobody has even came to take our order for anything. 10 more minutes passed and the couple recieves their appetizers and drinks so my wife and I finally had enough so I walked to the front receptionist desk to request a manager. I explained to him the situation and he sends over a waiter. My wife and I were very displeased at this time because we've waited over 30 minutes and hadn't even put our drink order in. The waiter comes and says "sorry, this is her table but I'll take your order" referring to the waiter that took the order of the couple right beside us. The drinks and appertizer we ordered and came out very quickly. Another group of 5 people walked in and sat behind us. The waiter came by and asked the couple next to us are they "ok" or needed anything completely disregarding us and not asking us anything. 15 minutes pass and the couple receives their dinner. The group behind us of 5 men place their order for meals. 20 minutes passed and the couple next to us are practically finished with their meals and the group of 5 men are recieving their dinner meals and nobody has even stopped by since we put our drinks and appetizer order in. We finally had enough got up from our seats to retrieve our waiter. She comes over and states this isnt her table so we requested whoever table this is go get them. The same waiter that took our drinks and appetizer order comes back and we asked him "so who is the waiter? She stated this wasn't her table either." His response was "oh" and proceeded to take our meal orders. The couple next to us paid and left and the group behind us began to pay for their orders. Both of these groups arrived after us ate and drank before we even received our meals. I don't even know it the food was good due to the fact we were so upset about the service. The waiter apologized 10 times when it was time to check out, but damage was done. I will never visit this establishment again unfortunately. read more

Our waiters (on both visits) were also not great and tended to forget a lot of the requests for our order. The restaurant is always super busy so I do understand. Decided to check this place out for my birthday this year and was utterly disappointed. Made a reservation for 8 people on a Monday at 7pm. Show up on time but was informed the table wont be ready till 7:30pm (no apologies just a simple shrug from the hostess). After finally getting our table we were blessed with an incredibly rude waitress. There were 3 fajita orders at the table, but when they finally came we were not given any tortillas! We waited for little over 15 mins till we finally got them. When I cut into my carne asada fajitas the meat was completely overcooked; I have finally experienced what chewing a tire feels like. For the first time in my life I actually sent food back to the kitchen and they took it off the bill. Everyone else at the table did like what they ordered, so maybe I just got unlucky. Firstly, awesome food and service! Definitely a choice Mexican restaurant in DC. The menu is extensive with a large alcohol offering, so you should definitely find something that suits your tastes. This place looks as popular as ever when I came for dinner with some friends, with what seems to be a dedicated carry-out service/space, and adequately spaced tables on each of the multiple dining levels. I felt totally safe in this environment, and the food was totally delicious as well with attentive service. I do plan to return for dinner again! read more

This is THE place to go to for margaritas in DC. If you know me you know I love burgers, Joe Biden, and margaritas. Specifically a spicy margarita but I'm really not picky (although I refuse to drink anything that has ANY Skinnygirl products in it as I am not a fan of Bethenny Frankel). Came here for a Sunday Brunch while on a weekend trip in DC. The service here is excellent. My friend asked to be seated by an outlet so that she may be able to charge her phone while having brunch, we were in need of our iphones since we were tourist. The hostess had no problem finding somewhere where we can sit and charge our phones. The bus boy and waitress were all nice, speak both english and spanish. The food was well prepared and nicely displayed. We ordered too much food, but were just overly excited by the menu. This place did not disappoint. We were famished and couldn't have found a better spot to indulge in. I ordered the eggs Benedict, excellent. The mimosas here were excellent as well. This is my favorite Latino restaurants. The food is always amazing. I try to get something different often. Seafood, pork, or steak, you will not go wrong. The icing on the cake is their yummy margarita swirls! The restaurant is busy often. Try to make reservations or be ready for a wait. During that time, you can enjoy chips and salsa and that margarita swirl I just mentioned. The parking is terrible. read more

I never understood the popularity with this place. There is no bar which is a huge turnoff to me. I prefer sitting at a bar as I dine solo for the most part. Also, the food here is basic as I find pretty much all Mexican food is. read more
