I've been coming here every three months for years to see Mallory Doar, and she never misses. Whether I was doing ombrés, high-intensity vibrant colors, or my current permanent red, she always gets it exactly right. Finding someone who can nail the color your looking for can be hard but she gets it every time. Beyond being a talented stylist, she's incredibly fun to talk to and makes the entire appointment fly by. If you're looking for someone who specializes in bold colors and creative cuts, I can't recommend her enough. ​The salon itself has a fantastic New York subway vibe the decor the owners put together is unique and adds so much character to the space. I have weird hair. It is sorta curly, kinda wavy, with some straight lines. I also have *lots* of hair, & i wear glasses. Brier was my stylist & her expertise with curly hair (um...weird hair--see above) was evident before she even picked up the scissors. I walked out with the perfect cut. Update: A salon owner reached out and left me a voicemail and text message. Said he would make it right by either giving a refund or trying to fix the treatment. I returned his call and left a voicemail. Will update again when I hear back from him. Added a second pic of what it looked like 3 hours after treatment. Paid for an express keratin blowout for my daughter. Not happy with the results at all. I get it smoother at home myself. Her hair is rough and dry and very very frizzy. It looks like I just dry brushed her curls out. Not sure if it is because her hair wasn't washed with a clarifying shampoo first or what. She told me that my daughters curls were fighting to stay curly. I just said ok. But I can get it straight and smooth at home with at home products. We just wanted to try a keratin treatment to see if it helped with frizz for a longer period of time. The lady was nice. FYI, Parking is very tight. Even though I am VERY disappointed and won't be going back I did of course leave a nice tip because it's what I do. Can't seem to find a good salon down here. 1st one I tried for me was a bust. 2nd one I tried for my daughter was a bust. I found Lava Salon on Facebook and then proceeded to stalk the Instagram feeds of each stylist which lead me to Micaela @Instagram _honeybeebeauty_ Micaela is up to date on all the new trends in hair, her goal is to keep your tresses healthy while maintaining your desired look, and she makes the idea and brainstorming process a breeze. Thank you Micaela, I can now ditch my hat! Absolutely the best salon I've ever been to; located on Spruill Ave. in the Park Circle area of North Charleston. The colorfully painted concrete block building that makes you question if you're in the right place is actually a perfect gem of eclectic atmosphere and people. Going on a reference from a friend I stopped by to check it out and make an appointment. Noel the owner stopped what he was doing and spent several minutes happily sharing information and getting me scheduled for my appointment. Micaela (@_honeybeebeauty_ on insta) is an incredible colorist and person. She does hyper-focused work, while being charming, kind and gracious. I showed her pictures of what I wanted and she nailed it perfectly. Definitely enjoy a Lavamosia while you're there! Yum! Can't wait to go back. read more

Since moving to the neighborhood, I decided to check out the local Lava Salon. It's a small spot on Spruill and is super convenient for any PC resident which was one of my main draws. Plus I'd always heard amazing things about the Avondale location. I had a couple cuts done here... both by different stylists. Neither cut was bad and I left with a fresh look, but by the time it grew out, I wasn't loving how it was going. Probably more of a personal preference than anything. I did like that I was able to get appointments on short notice and while they're not always with a stylist at each chair, they have 5 chairs in the salon. Also, I was charged different prices each time I went in for what I believe was the same service. It might be that some stylists charge more based on experience or something but it was never explained to me so I was a little puzzled. Anyway, decent spot in Park Circle with a cool London Tube aesthetic going on inside. read more

I'm a sucker for the lava in Avondale, but this one offers convenience for us northern Charleston dwellers. It's boasts the same laidback vibe of Avondale but in a different way, while offering the best hair services in the Charleston area. I love this salon so much, when I moved away I called them and they helped me find a similar place out west. I'm finally back and able to enjoy the great stylists here again! Each are awesome in their own way, I have super curly and thick hair so the surface products save my life, especially in the southern heat. I honestly don't have a bad thing to say... The receptionist was very helpful and recommended lava's "emergency treatment" and got me in that same day to an appointment. I was in town visiting a sick relative and was in desperate need of a loooong overdue refresh of my asymmetrical pixie. Coming from Portland, OR, where I usually go to a progressive LGBTQIA+ salon/barbershop, I was nervous about finding a salon that would be a good fit and give me an edgy cut vs a mom pixie. Nikki was amazing! The best cut I've ever had. Everyone was so friendly and made me feel relaxed and well taken care of. I'd love to take Nikki with me to Portland! I cannot recommend this salon enough - especially if you're looking for something a little more Portland and a lot less country club. read more

Even though the website said that they cut children's hair, when I called they said they do not typically cut children's hair if they parent isn't a customer. That's a bummer, as I would have been a potential customer if my daughter had a good experience. read more
