If you're looking for a great place to get lunch in New Bern, Lawson's on the Creek is a strong option. They're adjoined with the Tryon Palace visitor center right there in downtown New Bern, so likely they're convenient for you. They have a decent, slightly obstructed view of the water but you can walk about 50 feet and be right on it. There is a large private parking lot, so no worries on that either. In general, the sandwiches there are darn good, and the few sides we tried (dill potato salad, and their pasta salad) were excellent. My reuben on marbled rye was straight up delicious, and you order yours based on how much meat you want on it. They use Boar's Head meats here, which while I think sometimes that is overblown, you can count on that level of quality. The thing though is this, it's gonna be a pricey lunch. They are full service, so count on tipping. Their prices for sandwiches are higher than what I'm accustomed to, even with my standards adjusted for the current life of everything be expensive that we live in in 2026. Chalk that up to waterfront dining and high rent I would imagine. In any case, if the sandwich didn't live up to the price, I wouldn't give it a 5. I already posted a review but Yelp just keeps taking them down. SO here we go again. Decent food, a little expensive, but typical for restraints attached to museums and other touristy areas. Staff was friendly and prompt. There are too many high top tables, people stood around waiting for regular tables as many adults don't like the uncomfortable chairs and some kids can use them safely. Location is beautiful, the restaurant seems nice. Probably their greatest asset is that their people are super friendly and helpful. My wife had a fruity Arnold Palmer, which she really enjoyed. The kids meals are a little on the pricey side, but generously portioned, so it seems fair. We shared a hot roast beef and provolone sandwich, which was really perfectly serviceable; not a standout, but not terrible. The dill potato salad had next to no dill flavor, and the cole slaw was swimming in an exceedingly tangy dressing. Overall? Easy to find with the sign on the street and main desk people inside the NC history center directing people. The parking lot (free) was mostly full probably because of the farmer's market on a Saturday morning/afternoon. Had a short wait before we were seated outside. Highchairs (and supposedly booster seats) are available. Umbrellas were hooked on the outdoor tables, but they didn't want to put them up since it was going to be "windy". Luckily it was overcast so it was not unbearable to sit outside. It was probably better to sit outside with a little breeze since it was a bit warm inside. Nice view of the Neuse River too. We had the 5 cheese griller sandwich as well as a pimento cheese sandwich with added bacon with sides of fresh fruit and pimento cheese tots (upcharge). You can choose type of bread. Only $4 sides and bag of chips are included with the sandwiches, otherwise, they are an additional cost. There was plenty of cheese (melted, warm) in both of the sandwiches, making them filling. Fruit side wasn't very cold, but it was fresh. Pimento cheese tots were fantastic, worth the upcharge. Crispy flattened mashed potatoes with melted pimento cheese on top. Served with a delicious house made ranch dressing. Service was good, friendly from start to finish. There is an outlook of the river and kid pirate ship close by walking distance from the outdoor seating area that would be fun to check out after eating. Would definitely come back. read more

The shrimp salad was amazingly good. The fruit salad included fresh plumbs, strawberries, all kinds of mellon- so good!!! The servers were friendly. We happened to be there on a day that was packed due to the Jane Austen summer program happening, and we still got our food pretty fast. We visited Lawson's On The Creek today after we couldn't get to the Cherry Point Airshow. That's a story for another day! So that our trip from High Point wasn't totally wasted we decided to visit New Bern and have lunch. We asked a local on a bicycle where he recommended and he said "Lawson's!" He said he was on his way there too! The food was tasty and we would definitely return if in the area. The tea was perfect 1/2 and 1/2 sweet/unsweet. I love tea! The roast beef was tender and the turkey tasty. The panini tots were something new and different. We sat outside to enjoy the nice day. They even have a section on the menu for pups! So a friend of mine told me to go to Lawson's after the first place she recommended was closed. It took us a while to find it. We didn't know it was inside a museum. I had a turkey sandwich on ciabatta bread and my husband had the turkey blt. My turkey was delicious and the soup was good but it lacked a bit of flavor. Maybe they can add a bit of salt pepper garlic and onion powder and that would make it taste better. Hubby had some tater tots that were flattened out. That was peculiar to me. I got the pasta salad to take home. I'm not sure why they had bow tie noodles and Cavatappi in the salad mixed together. That was different. It was good anyway. First off -- the one caveat to my review is that our lunch took a long long time. We arrived before noon and it took until almost 1pm to get tea, then our sandwich and salad and then the check. That said they were very busy, very nice and obviously understaffed so no knock to them for the wait -- just wanted to get it out there in case someone thinking of eating there was in a time crunch. Basically Boar's Head meat deli sandwiches, a few salads, shrimp salad, chicken salad, deli-type sides and tater tots smashed in a panini press (which by the way is a brilliant idea). My wife got the shrimp salad sandwich and loved it. I didn't try it but she reported it was chock full of shrimp. She also got the tots which were really good at first but suffered as they cooled off. I got more or less the house salad with mixed greens, chicken, bacon, blue cheese, onion, egg and tomato -- basically a riff on a Cobb salad. It was a fresh and large salad but first there wasn't enough dressing for it and second the chicken was just shreds of deli meat that both had no taste and certainly did not jive with any sort of expectation of 'grilled chicken'. Overall it was filling but I would definitely not order again. Probably would be back for the shrimp salad if I was passing through New Bern around lunch time but certainly not a destination. read more
