I had no idea what this new cable was, so he spent time explaining and showing us a few pointers to make sure we understood the software. It's like a no contract, no fee, amazing cable company that has even higher quality imaging. Plus virtually unlimited DVR space (Hello binge watching!) Let me provide a little background. I was a Directv subscriber for a decade and a half. I used to love their customer service, America based, and their picture quality, content and NFL package were outstanding. Then AT&T purchased Directv. I stuck with them a little longer but the quality of their services quickly deteriorated. I used to consider them the gold standard but i had to switch after a mystery charge appeared on my bill that they couldn't explain to me. I told them i was leaving and they didn't even care. I also refuse to go to Comcast. I noticed an ad for Layer 3 tv online and decided to try it out. Let me preface by stating i have a 1gigabit internet thru the fine folks from RCN who also have excellent customer service. Layer3 TV is an internet based cable solution. Their feed runs thru your internet. and they have 4K. I admit i was skeptical at first but once i switched i have not looked back. The picture quality is amazing and the customer service is outstanding. They are new to the Chicago area so there are a few kinks but you can tell with the technology they use they will become a force. Please keep doing what you are doing I enjoy your services immensely. read more

We've had Layer3 TV for almost three months now... Finally got tired of paying Comcast's insane TV package prices, while dealing with lousy-at-best customer service. We did have to keep Comcast broadband internet service, but luckily I get to expense a good chunk of that cost for work. Layer3's service is night and day compared to Comcast and AT&T... Very easy and quick to get a service agent via phone our internet chat, they're knowledgeable and quick to answer your questions or get your issues resolved. As for the actual TV service, it's very good (all HD 4k), but not without its issues. The streaming TV feed does lock up once in a while, and the boxes will occasionally also lock up requiring a reboot - and if you're DVRing something when you have to reboot the main box you'll lose the recording, as we've unfortunately learned once or twice now. But I'd say 96% of the time the TV feed quality is great, while saving us ~$25/month compared to Comcast. Layer3 is a young upstart, so know that going in - there will be the occasional hiccups, but Layer3 continues to improve its service to further minimize the issues. If you're fed up with Comcast, AT&T and DirectTV, give Layer3 a chance - if you're not satisfied you can cancel at any time (and do so online via their account web portal - no dealing with a phone service rep for 2 hours just to cancel). Two things keep me from giving Layer3 a 5 star rating: 1) The occasional TV feed and box lockup issues, while infrequent, need to get fully resolved 2) Layer3 doesn't yet have a "watch anywhere" mobile app. You can use individual channel apps for mobile viewing (ESPN, HBO on the Go, etc.), but that's a pain - a singular mobile viewing app (like Xfinity's) would be a great addition and improvement. Layer3 is great. No contracts and a good price. Granted it's basically a streaming service because it's all internet based so there can be some technical issues but it's still worth it. Great channel line up and always adding new things. They recently added an Alexa skill that allows you to change the channel and some other navigation. It'll be nice if the expand this soon. Their customer service is out of this world which you can't say for the vast majority of the other providers around. I am very glad I switched to them. The service and quality of the video feed is the best I've seen yet. The fact that I had the pleasure of dismissing Comcast as my cable provider was also a VERY pleasurable experience. Layer3 TV is of course new and for as young as they are the service is very good and cheaper that Comcast here in the Chicago area. Remember that you need to keep your internet provider since this service rides atop of it. Main box connects to your router so you might need to move some things around a bit. I have not realized any speed degradation on the internet over all even with a couple of TVs on along with several PCs. You can test the video speed to your system via their website, I have Comcast 80mb and video tests at 70mb. The HD quality is outstanding on all channels. The guide speed is right on, quick. The home page is a nice idea and displays allot including recents and the guide. Customer service via chat is very responsive and concerns are noted such as features bluetooth on the boxes, its there just need product support to roll it out. A request for feature rollout schedule and updates has been made and is in the works. Upon installation the tech said all that you see you have. 6/30/17 I don't know how they're 5 star service. It cost me $150 Abt service call to fix the stereo connections because the guy just started pulling wires. I asked to be reimbursed. After 2 calls & waiting 1 1/2 wk's, I finally got a call back. I explained the course of events and said I need to be reimbursed. His exact words "NOT gonna happen. I'll tell you that will never happen... period" 6/20 Never got a callback, never got return service, never fixed the component connections they broke & now they claim they're not "authorized" to work on "3rd party equipment", they want to refer me back to Apple because they screwed up the connections when they installed my cable. 6/9/17. I might as well have ATT or Comcast, have the same inept service but, at least it'll cost less. The immediate bad sign was when the "technician" was confused because one of the tvs we still have is a tube tv. "I better see if our cable works with your tv before I start to install". (It needs a digital converter, that's all it is & I know that.) Magically, he doesn't know how to hook up a tv. So, he calls his supervisor "Ahh Jose, did we ever get the fix for the thing where the picture-when it doesn't work on the tv-because of the thing". Magically again, they just developed (10 yr old FCC mandated hardware) a cable for a tube tv but, it's not here, no one can get it & it's probably not quite available yet. What a waste of time. The picture quality is awesome.. it starts to learn what types of programs you frequently watch, so the suggestions on your home page are great! After Spectrum took over Time Warner, channels started disappearing and our bill went up over $30. I immediately started looking at options. That is when I found Layer3TV. A little less expensive, same or more channels, 8 channel DVRs, 1000 show DVR capacity. 4K resolution. Loving it. read more

New tv service that is taking on DirecTV, Comcast and AT&T. Customer service is the exact opposite of what you normally get, their people are smart and handle things the way they should be. Hands down best video quality and all the boxes connect wirelessly. Owned by the same people that invested in Uber and Airbnb. They have twice the HD channels of Comcast and offer 4K too. Huge DVR, and I'm saving about $20 a month. Had a few glitches when I first signed up, but it's soooo much better than my DirecTV, I'm never going back. read more

Just freeing myself from Comcast is a huge incentive. I do still need internet from Comcast but can dump voice (not that they have voice, just that I can get out of most of my bundle) and cable. It's a company full of potential while Comcast has the absolute worst customer service and really don't care as they are so big. I am only two weeks into watching and yes I do miss X1s voice search but that's about it. Layer 3 has improved since my first review. Overall I'm a fan. Hopefully the partnership with T-Mobile doesn't change anything for the worse. I now can log on to TV Anywhere, there's a mobile app to control the DVR and the service is pretty flawless when you compare it to DirecTV Now and SlingTV. Service did not work from day 1. I first received a box that wouldn't even turn on, so then I had to have a technician sent out to bring a new box and install it for me. The new box turned on, but that's about the extent of what it was capable of doing. I couldn't watch live tv (it buffered every few seconds despite being told by the technician that my internet speed was above and beyond what was needed for the service) and my on-demand service was also unusable. The only bright side is that their customer service is top notch, and I did qualify for the money back guarantee, so at least I won't be out $80 for TV that I couldn't watch! Truly unfortunate as I was really looking forward to breaking away from Comcast, but it looks like I'll have to return to their service. read more

We've been with Layer3 a couple of years now. Like many, we wanted to get away from Comcast. Initially the service was pretty good but since T-Mobile took over, we have seen more and more issues with TV dropouts, the set top box has bugs in the software & crashes or displays incorrect info, it doesn't always record shows even though the record icon is shown on the guide. It is getting more and more frustrating & I fear I will be going back to Comcast very soon read more

I've been a customer for about 3 years. Like others, I switched because Comcast was the absolute worst - expensive and with terrible customer service. Initially Layer3 was good but since TMobile took over the service has noticeably deteriorated. Jumping pictures, "hang tight" notices and having to reboot the boxes have become far too common. Calls to customer service and a service visit have not helped. Now I'm considering cancelling and am researching YouTube TV. read more

I was a DirecTv customer since 1993 and had priced out all the competitors every 6 months or so for the last 5 years. In the end they all came within $10/month. Then I saw the ads for Layer3 TV. I had to say the price is what drew me in and I think I was one of the first installs in the Chicago area......but once I had the system it wasn't only the price but the performance and UI that is terrific. And when there is an issue (rarely) the customer service team is fantastic. I had to work a little magic with Comcast to give me unlimited data but that worked out just fine. Couldn't be happier with the service and it is family friendly as well - wife and kids adapted to it with ease. Ok, wife not quite with ease but she has the hang of it now. So sick of dealing with Comcast. Our On Demand has not worked since November. They have been to our house several times. Every time you call them they act like they have no clue what you are taking about when it comes to past issues in which they sent a tech out investigate. You are always talking to a call center in a different country. They give you the same scripted answers. They best part is every time we call they said our estimate for the service to be restored is by 5pm-8pm that night, I said you have been saying that for 6 months!?!?!? this company is a joke... they are the next Blockbuster Video... read more

As we all know Layer3 is pretty new and you might have seen them in malls and on billboards on the expressways and I must great GIVE THEM A TRY... I too was one of them "ahhh they seem cheap and blah blah" I went to the site and did a price check, gave them a call and i gave it a shot, had nothing to lose. And yes.. they do run off your internet.. I have Comcast 75 Mbps and honestly 1 to many devices.. 3 TVs, 6 cell phones, chromecast and google home and yet my TV runs perfectly fine!!! 1 TV is connected via ethernet and the 2 other ones are on WIFI. DVR works good and the boxes look pretty cool, lights, top color plating and more. Very proud with Layer3 and wish them success read more

So I just signed up for Layer3 service and I will try to give a review of the pros and cons of this new streaming provider. Layer3 advertises themselves as a new cable company, but they truly are not a cable company but rather an online streaming company. They provide all the traditional cable channels you get from your everyday cable companies, but you need high speed internet in order to use it. Yes they provide you with a set top box, but you don't use a COAX cable, but rather an Ethernet cable. Their service is similar to hulu, directv now, sling or vue, but in this case you need one of their devices rather than a BYOD (Bring your own Device like an apple TV or Roku). Now since it relies on broadband internet it's susceptible to buffering if your internet degrades or you have congestion. Just keep this in mind and know this in advance. The interface looks "cool" but there is a learning curve and its not as intuitive as a TiVo (or maybe I'm just so used to a TiVo). You can add shows to your library for easy future reference (sorta like favorites) but it takes time to figure out how to add them. I added a show purely by accident. Setting up the DVR function also takes some figuring out, but the nice thing about this streaming service is you can actually record, unlike Directv Now which has no DVR function. I was using Directv Now for awhile but since you cant record you are forced to watch live and often times I missed my shows. Now there are some really ANNOYING features of this service. I will start with the DVR. It doesn't have commercial skip like the Dish Hopper or TiVo Bolt so you're forced to use the Fast Forward (FF) or Rewind (Rwd) buttons. Now there are 5 different speeds for FF or Rwd and let me tell you it's impossible to finely control it. You hit FF once and it goes too slow. You hit it twice and it goes a bit faster but not quite fast enough. 3 hits seem just right and anything more than that is too fast. Then the play function isn't precise. So you hit FF 3 times, it's advancing at a nice clip and the commercials are now over so you hit play but its going so fast that it blows past where you wanted to start watching. Or you hit play and the box takes 3-5 seconds to respond and you've now passed the point where you want to be by 5-10 minutes. You're then forced to rewind and FF and Rwd and FF to get to the point where you want to be. This should not be like this. The FF or RWD should be precise and responsive. Or a simple solution is do exactly what TiVo did. Add a 30 second advance and 15 second rewind. So if you want to go past the commercials you just hit the 30 second advance 4 times for 2 minutes, 5 times for 2.5 minutes or 6 times for 3 mins. This would be PERFECT Another annoyance is their ENERGY SAVER mode. Layer3 implements an energy saver feature so it saves bandwidth in case you're not watching TV. A person watching TV will need to interact with the service and press a button on the remove when an energy saver mode kicks in. If you don't interact with the layer3 then it goes into screensaver mode. While I "maybe" understand the rationale for this it's just stupid. No other online streaming service requires this. If im watching a movie or VOD and its a 2 hour movie I shouldn't have to grab the remote every 45 mins to deactivate energy saver. This either needs to be removed or have the threshold controlled by the end user or raised to a much higher timeout like 4 or 5 hours. Lastly Layer3 advertises their service as 4K ready or capable and there is only one channel that broadcasts in 4K currently but the box is software limited to only output a maximum of 1080p. I called up customer service and they explained the hardware is capable of 4K, but since there are no channels other than the NASA channel and two VOD there is no need to have the output higher than 1080p. Either they need to stop advertising they support 4K or change the software settings so you can configure the output of the box to be 4K. This is kinda false advertising. What if I wanted to watch NASA channel in 4K? Layer3 does have the opportunity to be a disrupter in the cable industry, but there are things that need to be addressed. Also their regular price for their service, once the promotion is over, isn't any cheaper than traditional cable companies. They're also much higher than other streaming services that offer the same thing. Its worth giving them a trial to see how you like them. I would put them on par with Sony Vue, far ahead of DirecTV Now, but with youtube, hulu and SlingTV getting DVR service there will be a lot of competition. read more

I have had Layer3 for about a month now and am very happy with it! We decided to try it out since there's no commitment and Comcast is just WAY too expensive. The first week or so there was a little freezing and some glitches with Layer3, but that has stopped and it works perfectly now. I would highly recommend Layer3 for your cable, it is so much cheaper then any other cable company and it works great! read more

Layer3 is perfect for me: lots of channels (most are HD), huge DVR, social media integration, plus you get the 'all in' package for an affordable price. I was one of the early adopters and quite delighted with the setup from start to finish. The customer service representative was knowledgeable and polite and managed to set up an appointment on a very short notice. The "cable" guy was on time (not a time window that makes you wait forever), also very polite and knowledgeable. The product... amazing! Sure, there is more to be improved but they just started and they already surpassed Comcast cable from all points of view. Some might say the downside is that you need internet connection. It's true, you do need internet connection to watch Layer3 TV, but in my opinion that is not an issue. Get it and you'll never look back. read more

I stayed overnight at a friend's house who has Layer3 TV and it was amazing. Best picture quality I've ever seen on cable and every possible television episode and VOD movie I could imagine. I spent the whole evening catching up on Homeland and watching the Grammys - and I quickly figured out the on-screen guide, which is brilliant, so easy to find what I was interested in. I love my Layer3 even though it's a little quirky. It may not be for everyone but I think it's a fair deal with the most amazing customer service. I really wish I could get high speed internet from someone other than Comcast (come on Google) but that's not a huge problem. Layer3 picture quality is outstanding. The energy saver needs to be fixed; I've been promised it's coming but really how long does it take to fix that? The DVR works but not as smoothly as Tivo. I love being able to turn on/off HBO etc by month. The few times I have had trouble Layer3 was quick to respond and truck rolls happen quickly. Now that I have all my boxes wired to the internet vs wireless reliability is even better. The design of the remote could use some work but it is manageable. Overall I highly recommend Layer3 TV. read more

Based on having Layer3 for almost 24 hours now (LOL!) I'm very satisfied. I never heard of them until a few weeks ago when I saw a pop up on Facebook. I read the very positive comments on the Facebook post immediately started a very pleasant chat with their customer service department and they answered all of my questions. Not sure why it took me a week, but I thought about it took the chance and ordered my equipment. My daughter installed our boxes last night. I was expecting complications but it was so quick and easy. I've been with Comcast/Xfinity for more years than I care to admit and I could not wait to make the change. Their customer service is nonexistent and their prices aren't justifed. Lately, I've noticed they started charging me for services I've never had or requested. (On a side note - my 82 year mother, who also has Xfinity, was charged $89 for the Mayweather fight. It's not likely that she ordered it and it was a fight for them to refund it.) Xfinity customers - watch your bill!!! Back to Layer3.....Since I was with the same cable company for most of my life (they rewarded my loyalty by charging me more and more and the worst customer service) the Layer3 system will take me a bit to learn where things are but I'm figuring it out. I was excited to learn that the Amazon Echo Dot is compatible and now I have my voice search that I will no longer have from Xfinity. Layer3 is working on the voice search but it's not available yet. I'm expecting that this cable company will just get better and better. For now, I'm willing to lose a few of the perks I had from Xfinity just to get away from them. It's worth it. read more

Just moved from DC and had them there for about 4 months and thought for sure I was going to be stuck with Comcast. Turns out hey have a pop up store in Woodfield, and they did a 4K demo for me, which I didn't have for some reason in DC and it was amazing. Twice the HDs of Comcast if you take the full package, which is why I went to them in DC and a huge DVR. Was actually able to bring my boxes from DC and get them turned on to Chicago. It took their agaent like three minutes. One of the reasons I went with them is the TPG fund which also is a major player in Uber, airBnB, and owns Neiman Marcus, is their primary investor, which explains a bunch and that these guys are serious players. Care person told me they are opting up in Denver, LA and a bunch of other cities next year. I'm actually saving about $25 a month over what I would pay ATT for the same channels (seems like prices are higher for TV in general in Chicago vs. DC) and getting more channels and a way better user guide and huge on demand library. They have this home page thing, which took a bit to learn me, but now, pretty much every channel and show I watch is waiting for me when i turn the TV on. What was even more amazing is that when I moved, all of my DVR still worked, and the lineup was Chicago like magic. read more
