Not tonight. 15 minutes to have someone bring menus, then over half an hour to get food even though there was only one other table with customers and 6 staff present (I won't say working). Even then the order want right. The gluten-free french toast wasn't gluten-free and was sent back. Hash browns were under cooked. I hope the owner as this and gets a new staff or retrains them. Below average food and the service is ok at best. So I live in the area and I haven't been here in years and after eating there tonight I realized why. Starting with the food it was really nothing special the pancakes I got were spongy and didn't have great flavor. My girlfriend got the haystack and was told that the Hollandaise was made in house and it was definitely from a powder which was a bad start. This restaurant was worth the drive into town. Lots to look at (sort of like sitting in a gift shop, but in a good way) and scratch made everything. The all day breakfast menu looked amazing, but we had lunch. I had a patty melt with homemade hand battered onion rings, subbing out the rye bread for homemade wild rice/cranberry bread. Yum. The menu also had a decent gluten free section and three delicious sounding homemade soups. Took us awhile to decide what to order! Though we didn't test it out, they also boast a coffee bar and hand dipped ice cream. Very kid friendly, my kids gave it a 4 1/2 and a five. However, the Lazy Moose lives up to its name. Before we even ordered our drinks we found the bathroom was dirty and the table had gum stuck to the bottom. The high chair for our son was also dirty. The restaurant combines a country store, ice cream stand and small town cafe; none of which impressed me. The dining room is split into three rooms and the decor is all over the place. Individual aspects were enjoyable but not cohesive together. The artwork with price tags dangling was tacky. I had the grilled walleye. The first bite was amazing! Each subsequent bite increased in the amount of pepper until the last was almost too peppery. My sons spaghetti tasted like it was either under cooked or had sat for a while. The menu has so much potential but is so badly executed. Walleye Cakes were barely luke warm, very doughy and pretty bland tasting. The smoked cheddar bacon burger had what seemed like regular cheddar and it wasn't even melted, the burger didn't taste like it was anything other than ground beef and the fries must have cooked in oil that wasn't hot enough because they were soggy and here they did use salt but way too much salt (not a little to much, way too much like they used half the shaker). The only good part was the bacon. Hopefully they can fix their kitchen because the menu looks amazing. read more

Great food. We were traveling from Portland, where the food is amazing, and were very impressed with the food here. The Fisherman's catch was cod and was obviously hand breaded and seasoned upon ordering. Delicious and fresh. The cranberry coleslaw was perfect. Not too mayonaisey. Meatloaf and chili were great. The mashed potatoes had bits of skin and were nice and chunky. Big fat sweet potato fries. The pies had nutty crusts, but more cream than I like. Still very tasty tho. I would definitely recommend this nice family restaurant to anyone read more

Was very disappointed with this place. Looks really cute and cozy and original but it's just average. There were 3 of us and we had breakfast. There was nothing special about it. It was good but that was it. The reason for the 1 star is that they add a 12% charge to the bill "for the cooks because everything is made from scratch" which I think is a BS charge. That is their job that they are already getting paid for. I shouldn't be forced to tip them and then tip my waitress. 12% to the cook and 15% to the waitress and breakfast for 3 is $50 and again....it was just ok...average. I highly disagree with being forced to tip the cooks. read more

Nope. I've been there before and the breakfast is above average with the interesting hash and homemade baked goods with friendly attentive service. But today was a much different story. I always wince when I see "please seat yourself" in a busy diner because that's usually an indication that service will be slow and today added credence to my theory. I ordered the wild rice meatloaf - it was good but not outstanding. It was to be accompanied by homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, cole slaw and a cranberry wild rice dinner roll. The cole slaw was just as bland and flavorless as the potatoes. Cooks - taste your food - geez. I told the server about the waterlogged potatoes but no repair was offered and it just made her basically abandon our table. I had to ask another server to take care of us. You have to pay up by a register but no one was assigned to that job and servers kept walking by us, eyes averted until I raised my voice and asked for assistance. The built in service charge is split between the server and the kitchen. I refused to pay it. Management should not be subsidizing their payroll with an obligatory "service charge". It is not "in lieu" of tipping, but an additional charge that most customers will likely not notice. It feels dishonest to me and made me feel even more cheated when I left. It will be awhile before I try this place again. read more

So disappointed... This little cafe looked so cute inside and had a great menu...however, on my visit I ordered a smoked salmon wrap with fries and it was awful.... The salmon tasted super weird and left an awful smell on my hands after trying it...the fries were soggy and tasted like they had been reheated old fries...the only reason I giving them 2 stars is the waitress took my meal off the bill...however, I was with two other people and their bill came to $39...again their meals were also disappointing... read more

Ordered biscuits and gravy for the family. The order comes with two biscuits, sausage gravy, and two eggs. Just under $8.00. The gravy... It was a sausage gravy but very bland. Defiantly was disappointed. The biscuits... Slightly dense and dry but this could be due to them being split and toasted/grilled. The flavor was there though. The eggs... Each order was undercooked. One order was to be hard. The yolk was slightly runny and the whites were gooey. The other orders were over easy. The whites on them were running as much as the yolk. The coffee... Slightly weak, could be hotter, but an okay flavor. The service... Good. The server checked in periodically, quick with the food and drinks, and kept the coffee full. read more

Unimpressed. My boyfriend and I stayed at my aunt and uncles cabin for a weekend and wanted to grab some good breakfast before spending the day on the lake. It was about 1030am and they were busy, but it took at least 20 minutes for us to be greeted and our table wiped down. Another 20 minutes for the waitress to bring us coffee. We both decided decided to order a specialty breakfast (hashbrown veggie scramble) rather than a traditional eggs, meat, toast sortof meal. When the meal arrived it was pretty pathetic. Small portions and what was supposed to be a veggie hashbrown egg scramble was in turn onion and hashbrowns... minimal egg. Bummer to spend a good part of our day for a disappointing meal. New to Yelp, I created an account JUST to leave this awesome review. I have lived in the area of The Lazy Moose for 25 years, but I hadn't had the pleasure if stopping in under any of it's previous ownerships. Yesterday (Easter Sunday) I was driving frim the Cities to Duluth with Mom and we had a heck if a time finding something in the area that was open. All my usual spots were closed and thus we happened upon The Lazy Moose. On our entrance I was immediately greeted and was impressed with the clean kitschy decor. The air smelled amazing and I noticed some yummy looking breads and jellies, as well as cute decor available for purchase at most reasonable prices. After using the clean and baby friendly restroom, (we're talking changing table and step stools) the 3 of us sat down to look at menus. We settled on some signature fish specials including breaded cod (no idea what it was breaded in but it was full of dill abd AMAZING), Kalvala hash (sweet potatoes, potatoes, bacon onions and spices) a side of homemade creamy fluffy tartar sauce, some delicious cole slaw with craisins and fresh baked craisin pumpernickel rolls. We also had a side of sweet potatoe fries that were slightly battered and amazingly delicious. Throughout our meal our server catered to us, even giving our compliments to the cooks. They put up with our shenanigans too! The food which i have previously described was perfection! Everything tasted WONDERFUL. I have food sensitivities to preservatives, nitrates and msg and had zero problems. We're talking delicious, wholesome home cooked food! I was most impressed with the fish. The cod was cooked to perfection, not over done. It's texture was flaky and moist. There was NO fishy taste. My Mother In-Law is from Florida and has access to plenty of fresh caught fish and she was plenty impressed. Honest, everything was superb. I am NOT an avid restaraunt goer, but man, once in a Blue Moon, you find these GEMS, The Lazy Moose is DEFINATLY one of them!!! read more

We saw the billboards on the way home and decided to stop for breakfast...glad we did! My husband had the ham and cheese omelet and I had the eggs benedict. You can tell that the food is made from scratch. It was probably the best hollandaise I've ever had and my husband was impressed by the homemade bread. Also, you can tell that the orange juice had just been squeezed that day. I didn't find the prices to be much more than most breakfast places now-a-days...around $10/person which seems typical when we eat out. We will definitely stop by again if we are going through that way...I'd love to try out their lunch! read more

We have stopped here a few times in our trips up north. Kids usually get pancakes and French toast which get cleaned up no problem. Great bacon and sausage. Breakfasts are plentiful and the hash is a nice change from regular potatoes. But for lunch today I had the wild rice meatloaf - something I don't typically order. Can't say enough good things about it. Moist and flavorful, with a thick beef gravy. Wife was jealous, and rightfully so. Get it. Kids got complimentary ice cream at the end of lunch. We stopped here because of good reviews. There were 15 staff people and 22 customers in the restaurant. I ordered the wild rice burger with sweet potato fries and my other half ordered blueberry pancakes. The food was late. The server was flustered and apologetic. The kitchen wasn't getting food out and the manager was walking around changing lightbulbs. Three waitresses were rolling silverware while one waitress was helping the entire restaurant. One young man spent his shift practicing karate kicks and leaning on the register. The food? The burger was dry and the sweet potato fries cooked in oil that wasn't hot. They were soggy and half were regular potatoes. My malt was mostly milk. My friends pancakes were delicious he said except for the occasional onion scattered in the from the grill. Don't go here unless you want to be entertained by ineptness and enjoy that. I must say we were shocked when our bill for two meals and a milk shake was 42 dollars. read more

Starving, we stopped here based on Yelp recommendations. The sign by the hostess informed us we could sit ourselves, so we sat down in the annex next to the main dining room. We waited and waited but no one came to give us menus or offer us any service. We would have waited more but the last straw was when others who had arrived after us received prompt service. We decided to try this restaurant for breakfast. We wanted ice waters and coffee to drink. The server brought our water and after 10 minutes of waiting, we asked a different server if we could get our coffee. She brought our coffee. My husband puts ice cubes in his coffee and I use cream and sugar. There weren't any spoons in our silverware "packet" and I had to get up to ask for 2 spoons. The server said they were being washed. We did get our spoons. The food was great, but a bit pricey. We had to go up twice to get coffee refills and one time the server said more was being made. Shouldn't the coffee always be going at an establishment that serves breakfast all day & calls themselves a "coffee house"? There were only 4 other customers in the restaurant so it wasn't busy at all. We had the manager come over and asked him to sit with us. We wanted to let him know how inattentive our server was and that the service wasn't the best. We also told him that the meal was great. Our concerns did not seem to be taken seriously. read more
