Such a great horseback riding experience! First off,…read moredefinitely use Google Maps to get here--Apple Maps took us to the wrong spot. The entrance is a bit tucked away off a driveway and dirt road, and depending on the signage, it might not be super obvious. But if you follow Google Maps, you should be fine! We did the 1.5-hour ride and it was totally worth it. You cover a lot of ground, and the property is massive--it really feels like you're out in nature. Even though everything was pretty dry and golden this time of year, it was still beautiful. We saw cows, open fields, and got to take in the peaceful surroundings. Laura was an amazing guide and host--so patient, kind, and knowledgeable. She matched us with the right horses for our level and even took pictures for us during the ride, which was such a nice bonus. Also, shoutout to them for providing water--it was super hot and I was not prepared for that sun! Definitely wear sunscreen if you're going during the summer months. All in all, a really memorable experience and I'd absolutely recommend it. Great for beginners or anyone just looking to unplug and do something special outdoors.

It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. It was also a miraculous gift to my 73-year-old friend Lisa. She has been completely blind since an auto accident on the way to a horse show in 1969. She was only 16 years old and in training for the 1972 Olympics in dressage. This ride was her first since that day. Laura is incredibly compassionate and an absolute expert with horses. She is exceptionally safety conscious. She set Lisa up with a gentle horse named Mama, and at Lisa's request, Laura led mama from a few horse lengths away. The experience was amazing and Laura made it possible. I cannot recommend her and Trails of 49 highly enough. Laura is also a great historian. My mother's family has been in Calaveras County since the 1850s. While I live 300 miles away now, it's good to know that the history, horses, and land is so well cared for by such an exceptional person. I was born in Calaveras County and will be buried there, and I'm glad Laura is taking care of it in the meantime!

Beware. Recommend doing a vet check or having very knowledgable person check out any horse before…read morepurchasing from here. We made the mistake of believing their "expertise" with regards to several issues we saw and questioned. Our bad, we are fairly new horse owners having only a few years of horse experience under our belts. Gina, the owner, seems very nice but she sold us a "great, finished horse...no problems...sound.." that actually has some serious health problems. They said he stumbled a bit because his hooves needed a trim (hindsight ...I knew better, they weren't that long) and so our farrier (who is also a trainer and has many years experience) came out a few days after we brought him home and gave him a trim. We had noticed a slight limp and asked him to check it out. He noted a possible injury. A vet check a few days later (including X-rays) showed he has a front foot injury and likely has had a broken back, at minimum has had a serious back injury. He needs glucosamine & chondroitin daily forever, vet also strongly recommends chiropractic adjustment & possibly a series of shots (that may or may not work and cost $120 each). Upon sharing the information with Gina, she did not take any steps to take any responsibility for her oversight and claims. The owner and her hired hands spoke with full confidence of his soundness. We didn't know better. Seems they missed a few things so make sure you don't. It is a $1600 lesson for my husband and I. He is in search of another, more suitable horse now but we won't be going back to JG Horses.

A warning to horse lovers everywhere....Gina is a CON ARTIST! This whole place is where she sells…read morehorses she picked up at auction for $300. She cleans them up a bit, attaches a sweet story and sells them for 5 x that. I am one of the lucky ones, I bought a horse from her and knew enough to look out for myself but he still has some medical problems and is not the "dead quiet" husband horse I expected. I love my little guy and he has a forever home with me but it was a hard lesson to learn. Gina told me the horses there were on "consignment" (because who really wants to say they are a horse trader???) and PROMISED a phone call from the owner to pass on all vet records, which of course do not exist. After weeks of calling Gina for the info she had promised, she texted me some random dates that said: shots, shoeing and teeth. My vet found that my horse had not had his teeth done for 3-4 years, not 6 months like I was told!! It should have been a clue that when I was done trying the horse in the worlds smallest arena, I asked for some time to think about it. Right then, Gina got a phone call from someone else wanting to look at the same horse who was "very interested". What a coincidence!! The most heartbreaking was the condition that the horses were kept in. Some were in pasture with terrible injuries and others were in small, filthy stalls. It was awful. I know by the time I post this she will have moved on and be operating somewhere else, doing it all over again but just had to say my piece!
