A favourite for many years but well perhaps for the first time ever (last September), we felt it was not on song that night...it wasn't excessively crowded, the waiters were plentiful but seemed a little off the mark, distracted, not the well-oiled machine that we've come to expect (never experienced that before) as was the food...we chose old favourites but something wasn't quite right This is of course comparing it with its own usual high standards, but there was something that we both felt but didn't say to each other until we had left What was interesting is that a few days earlier we had dinner at the Ivy in the Park and had a really great evening in every respect...was it that comparison? its a higher tempo there whereas Le Caprice tends more to sail serenely on and nothing normally interrupts your total enjoyment of the experience Has something changed or was it just us? French name but the menu is more fusion. Good service, beautiful decor. Some of us had the fish and chips that is one of their signature dishes. If this is what you though don't bother because it's very average and you can get a much tastier fish and chips in a much less posh restaurant! We also had the miso salmon, the halibut and the veal. The presentation and the size of the dishes are good. The taste of the food is good but not "wow" ! You'll have a good meal in an nice set up for sure. read more

Oh hell no. The food was good, but the service was weird and made for a very unpleasant evening. Our first meal in London that was poor. I mean even the simplest places have had great service! Too many waiters were all over each table. One main waiter is how to make a true connection. We were never offered a second cocktail. They don't give bread plates so we awkwardly put our bread on the table. We were asked what we wanted to eat 4 min after sitting down. Never asked if the food was to our liking. Requested tap but got charged for Evian water? (Charge was removed when questioned...) Can anyone explain the 4 pound "cover charge" that was put on our bill with no warning? We asked (of course). Apparently the "top three restaurants in London have been around since the 1940's" and want patrons to pay an allowance to Le Caprice so they may put white cloths on each table. Yeah... The manager said that was the reason! Times must be tough! We were NOT impressed. Good food doesn't cover for all that mess. Happy twenty-fifth anniversary to us! This place feels like a restaurant in new York city. Overall it is cozy and a bit crowded with close tables. Few steps away from Piccadilly street, and very close to green park. Their front desk is very welcoming and pleasant. A nice live piano player sits in a tight area next to front desk and right next to the bar and some tables. It's a nice touch. The service is very good and the staff is very pleasant. The food quality is excellent. Surprisingly not as expensive as it appears to be. read more

A few weeks ago, I had a friend visiting from Germany and he was in the mood for some British faire. Although there are a number of other British spots in Covent Garden area, Le Caprice came to mind with their modern European menu that fits more to the ish is British. We were set on later seating, but struggled to get a decent dining time. My German mate suggested that there is a service called Gourmeo (anyone used it?), but unfortunately Le Caprice was not one of their restaurants for London. I haven't tried Gourmeo, but maybe we should have chosen on of thier restaurants, as we ended up being forced into an early seating, shame. The food was e-x-c-e-l-l-e-n-t! I had a English crab salad to start, and the claw meat was so big I was a little frightened. My friend's main, the pot roast guinea fowl, was really really lovely. The prune sauce was very smooth and had a bit of a bite to it. My favourite part of the meal was the dessert, each of the dishes looked so lovely, it took ages to decide. We had a cheese plater and a berry pie with custard, amazing. All in all the service was attentive and polite, the food was excellent, but the bill was a little steep. read more

I was staying near by and decided to walk on a cold winter evening to a highly rated, nearby place and take my chances at sitting down without booking. The friendly staff was able to accommodate me by my eating at the bar, which was fine since I was solo. The food was ok for the price level, but not particularly outstanding, though it's difficult to make blanket statements based on one dinner. The ambiance was nice and, though I wasn't dressed particularly smartly, the staff didn't make me feel unwelcome. read more

You can always count on one thing here at Le Caprice, that the food with be tops, but as for the service, it is touch and go. There have been times when I have eaten here on not so busy afternoons, and I and whoever I am with have been escorted to our table and given all the time we need, and on the other hand we have been briskly walked to our table and rushed into ordering, and with so much on its menu, it is difficult to choose and you need that time unless you are a regular who knows the menu. Michelin restaurants of Le Caprice's reputation can get away with treating guests like this, but it does get a little annoying when they arrive with the bill as soon you have finished your meal. As for the food I have had there and the dishes that I saw other people ordering, they all look great and surprisingly quite generous in size. I have been a few times and my favourite meal has been the Roast rump of Venison, I hadn't had Venison in a long while and it was absolutely delicious. I would recommend this restaurant for a treat anytime, but would also say go early. read more

I walked in, and immediately, found the place to be very elegant and well-presented. The bread served at start was solid (oftentimes, you can tell a lot about the restaurant just from the bread that they serve.) For main, I ordered the lobster roll and loved it. It was just the right portion and flavor, enough to satiate my big appetite but sophisticated enough to differentiate it from your average NYC food truck version. The service was good, and the pianist that played the piano on-and-off added to the overall experience as well. Great place to go for adequately fancy dates and family dinners, I'd say. read more

So far the Caprice has been, on separate occasions, the perfect romantic date spot, and the perfect place to eat with parents before a play. The decor is understated, and elegant with an art deco vibe. The staff are courteous and knowledgeable. Every single thing that was eaten was delicious, but extra high marks went to the crispy duck and watercress salad, and the ox tail ravioli. The menu is quite traditional, but the ingredients are so simple and fresh that it nothing seems dated. Everyone ordered their own puddings, and not a single crumb was left on the table. From creme brulee, to baked alaska, to rhubarb crumble. All gone. They also have an incredibly well stocked bar, including fernet branca, my favorite after dinner drink (oh San Francisco!). Incredible menu! It took me ages to decide on something because everything on the menu looks exquisite. The octopus and chorizo for the starter was great but the roast suckling pig was just incredible. Service was also great. I ended up drinking more than I should have because the wine kept on getting topped up without me noticing! Beautiful restaurant the put us in a small enclave for our group which was great. Celebrities have their lunch there, it is a airy and fun place to go. It has a mix between a north Italian 5 star restaurant but with the flair of the big city London. Each dish looks like a piece of artwork - you almost are afraid to destroy it. Unfortunately last time I have been there, I chose steak tartar - it was not presented well nor spiced enough. Disappointed my eyes wondered to all other tasty looking dishes. Lets leave steak tartar in Paris; they know how to do this over the pond. One of those moments, you would like to pick from your neighbours plate - which I did. The scallops looked delicious as well as the tiger prawns. The kitchen closes at 11pm, why not go to Billy Elliot's Musical before hand - my favourite musical and I am not particular a big musical fan. This musical is based in Victoria and from there you can have a romantic walk passing Green Park and Ritz Hotel and arrive still in time for a small light dinner. read more

I was a guest of a business colleague on a recent trip to Le Caprice. I had not been in this restaurant for approx 20 years. Lovely interior, nice photos on the wall, very welcoming staff. I started with a very good radicchio, artichoke, Parmesan, and pomegranate salad, well dressed, nicely plated, a good dish. A glass of Pouilly Fusse was a good accompaniment. For main I went for the Steak Tartare, which was very tasty, not too cold so there was plenty of flavour from the beef. Very good thin chips and a salad were the sides, to drink we enjoyed a good Gigondas. Small selection of cheese was a bit of a disappointment, but a very good 1974 Armagnac was a perfect end to the meal. I will return. read more

I've been to Le Caprice twice, once for lunch and once for dinner, and enjoyed it a lot both times. Le Caprice is a classy place that hasn't lost its little 'je ne sais quoi', despite recent changes to the kitchen and the fact that it is a bit of a dinosaur in the London dining scene. I like the simple design, the classic cuisine, the precise kitchen, the warmness and professionalism of the staff and the fact that you can eat comfortably at the pleasant bar counter. It is often little touches that make the biggest difference, and the doorman with bowler hat, the piano man who has no written music and chats to regular customers while playing, and the polished front-of-house act help to make Le Caprice a restaurant at which I hope to have many happy returns with my friends and family...or just alone for a cheeky long lunch at the bar. Le Caprice has always been my favourite restaurant in London and the fact that my other favourite restaurant, the Rivington Bar and Grill, is part of the same group of restaurants is no coincidence. From the first time I stepped through the swing door some 15 years ago, I have has a love affair with this place and no doubt you will too. If I could give 6 stars I would. We went on a London Times special. There was a mixup when we arrived,but the restaurant honored it anyway. The food was amazing. Grilled octopus with a wonderful smoky flavor, homemade pasta with a delightful spinach filling, fork tender lamb . . . Even the desserts were outstanding. We listened to a wonderful jazz singer. Excellent simple well prepared food , good service and understated decor. The Wolesley near buy owned by the original founders of Le Caprice , Ivy et al cannot match Le Caprice their vulgar pursuit of mammon is too obvious. read more

Le Caprice is the sister restaurant to The Ivy and has a similar menu if not the same. My food was very memoriable......a fresh questy squid salad, really good and i am not easliy impressed! The main course was salmon fishcake with spinach & sorel sauce, this was rich, creamy and was mostly salmon. I was very satisified by it! The wine was nice too. The service was quick, not fussy and despite other people complaining that they felt rushed, I didn't feel this at all. The restaurant itself is relaxed, with a piano player and a jazzy kind of feel. I would recommend this place for a birthday or a special occasion with friends. Also lots of celebs go here so people do tend to look around a bit trying to spot someone famous but that all adds to the fun! read more

Been a couple of times now, and was consistently unimpressed. It is always hard to get a table - presumably because it's rammed with celeb spotters and celebs that don't know any better - so book in advance. Service is good even when busy, and despite the well-heeled crowd the staff are not snooty. The wine list is comprehensive, but expensive. However, the food is what lets La Caprice down - overpriced and uninspiring. There are too many nondescript dishes for transatlantic visitors with no gastronomic sense of adventure, and even the more interesting choices are just not that special. You are paying for the kudos of eating there, not for quality - there are better, cheaper restaurants elsewhere. All that said, we did see Alan Sugar on one visit and Peter Stringfellow on another. read more

This is one of my favourite restaurants in London. I have been dining here for years and I cant fault it, the food is always exquisite and the service is wonderful. My most recent trip here was for my last birthday, there was 9 of us and we were seated at the table in the little alcove which was lovely as we were still in the restaurant but it felt slightly private. The waiter & waitress were very attentive, our glasses were never empty and they were always there to help, without ever feeling intrusive. Barman became belligerent after I sent Bloody Mary back. Sitting at the bar I had ordered a Virgin Mary. He served me an alcoholic Bloody Mary, pointing out that it would be the best I ever had (save your money the Tabasco Bloody Mary mix that you find at the shops is a classic but Caprices' version is tasteless). I pointed out politely that I ordered a Virgin Mary and he scolded me : mumbling that I should have said something or other instead as he turned his back to me. He spoke poor English. He remade the drink as per my original order and slammed it down in front of me.Then when taking lunch order he snatched the menu I had kindly picked up for him, out of my hand . We were three people and he made a point out of serving me last. It was service without a smile . I noticed that he broke a glass due to his rough handling. The dishwasher was under the bar and both barmen were preoccupied with emptying and (noisily ) loading it throughout the meal. As for the food the chicken and cep mushroom soup had a watered down flavour and there were cheaper mushrooms mixed in with cep. There was an unattractive trail of grease from the mushroom in the soup. The fish main wasn't any better. read more

I wish I could have made this a regular haunt, as I like the British comfort food menu (very similar to The Ivy and J Sheekey - all under the same ownership of Caprice Holdings) and the general buzz and ambiance. Unfortunately, I had the most abysmal service there a year ago. I was treating someone to a business dinner and had the staff interrupt me four times to ask when I was giving back the table (they only wanted to allow 1.5 hrs). In the end, they denied serving us dessert and asked us to leave and free up the table. Never have I been so incensed at the lack of accommodation and the rude manner in which they handled everything. read more

Ok, so there is a 4 pound cover charge which seems odd; wouldn't it make more sense just to raise the prices a bit? However, this was the best meal that we have had in London. We had eaten at Gordon Ramsays place the night before and had a good meal and a great waiter, but this food was superior. (BTW Ramsay's restaurant had a cover charge as well-perhaps this is now the standard in London) The seasoning was exactly right, the food was hot and done to perfection. Even the sides were amazing We walked in without a reservation on the recommendation of the concierge at the Ritz; though they will full, they created a table for us. Service was personal and great. We were impressed to see waiters supported by all hands on deck. I had the duck done perfectly as was my wife's sea bass. The cappuccino was as good, if not better than our favorite place in the North End in Boston. We had to stay for dessert and we were not disappointed. Totally overrated! Not expecting too much, my fiancé and I booked a table 2 months in advance to have a nice dinner out - only to be very disappointed. To make it short: It's AVERAGE in all respects, not more. The atmosphere is NOT EXCITING AT ALL. Waiters are rushing to take orders, we didnt feel ready when they approached us for the third time. Food was ok, but nothing spectacular - we had the chateaubriand; it was not easy to chew... The staff was pretty arrogant at the end, when we were paying our bill; their credit card machine didn't work and they were blaming us for not having a valid card. We have been to much nicer, cheaper, higher quality restaurants in London - definitely, Le Caprice is NOT RECOMMENDED. Look for something less "famous" - you will most probably find better quality. read more

I didn't like the idea of being seated to eat at the bar though this is a reataurant, not a diner. I felt that we should have been told about this when we booked on the phone, but we weren't. The place is trendy and elegant, you would not be surprised to run into someone famous in here. We started with a fresh fish sashimi and steak tartare, the sashimi was very good but the tartar not so much. The tartar tasted like if it had a bit too much ketchup mixed in it. Then i had the squash risotto which was very bland. The service was very good and it is the only reason why i am giving them 3 stars.
