Restaurant A La Fontaine - Melon and blue cheese appetizer

My friend and I were looking for a place to stop by for a dinner. They have their own parking right…read morenext to the building which makes it quite convenient. They were able to take us with no prior reservation which was great! Really authentic ambiance, it feels like the place has been there for a long time. The staff is very welcoming and friendly and spoke both French and English. The menu also was in both languages which was uber convenient. We went with combo dinner that included (1) a choice of an appetizer, (2) a soup or small salad, (3) main course, and (4) coffee/tea. The pricing for the whole thing was very affordable - 38 to 52 Canadian dollars which is a steal if you are in the US. The desserts are at extra cost - 7-9 Canadian dollars... Both my friend and I enjoyed our food. The highlight was the melon with blue cheese appetizer - very elegant and eclectic dish that doesn't compare to anything I tried before. The rabbit leg with prune sauce was also unusual and a must-try. Definitely coming back when I'm in the area next time.

Sadly, this place seemed well beyond its expiration date. The word "tired" comes to mind. The beef…read moredishes were non-descript. Onion soup was just OK. The vegetables were boiled to insipidness. Our waiter was up-beat and very attentive, describing the menu in glowing terms and making a valiant effort to raise our dining experience from the dead. But when you're dead, you're dead. We really wanted to like this place as a friend, who knows food, had recommended it. He enjoyed a meal there several years ago. I hope that they rediscover their glory days.

We tried: - complimentary bread, butter, pickles, mustard. I loved this. Never saw another restaurant plop down mustard and pickles. The mustard was also possibly the most delicious mustard I've ever had. Very spicy and slightly salty - Duck confit on beans $37. Tasty, crispy, rich. - Grilled octopus on pepper sauce with potatos $24. Really tender and flavourful. The sauce was bright and acidic - Sorrel soup $13.75. First time having sorrel. It has a slightly sour taste. The soup was creamy and tangy. I'm glad we tried it - Quail with quail eggs on purple rice $37.50. Quail itself wasn't as flavourful but the sauce was amazing and soaked into the rice - Creme brulee $15. Flavour was impeccable. Had a slight grainy texture which was odd but this is just nit picking. Comes with a warm cookie Everything was good. I'm being more nitpicky here than usual, mostly to go back to these notes again in the future. I loved the meal and would definitely go back. Service is very friendly. Food came out super fast. The restaurant is bright and lively. Tables are quite cramped together but it makes sense as they quickly filled up for the evening. Thanks, we'll definitely be back!

The prices are amazing and the food is mouthwatering. Shouted out to our serving assistant Callum, he made sure that we had a constant flow of complementary baguette and house-made pickles. I dined with four other people and everyone ordered something different and there was zero disappointments. I however, would highly recommend their duck entrée meat was so tender and flavorful, and it was perfectly crisp on the outside. Ultimately my best dining experience in Montreal!

Our server, Gibelle, was professional, welcoming, and provided us (along with her team) a smooth dining experience from start to finish. She also made sure that there was excellent timing on service throughout the meal. The food was outstanding. My husband ordered Steak Frites. I had the Tartelette de Champignons. Both dishes were delicious (I got to share a bite of the Stake Frites) The Tartelette was rich with the medley of mushrooms, beautiful pastry crust, and a rich blend of of eggs and cream to hold it all together. For dessert we shared Mousse au Chocolate and Taste au Citrion en Verrin. The only downside was we were so full, we could not finish them, The space is open and light with tables spaced out and benches around the outside. The whole space was clean, modern and airy. This is the sort of restaurant I would come back to Burlington just to have dinner here! Yes - I would include this restaurant on my "I would drive out of my way to eat here" criteria.
