If you want some really dank and authentic taiwanese food, then this is the place to be. Its kind of hidden in a quieter shopping plaza, however the food here does not disappoint!! This is my FAVORITE Chinese place in all of Houston. I try to go here with my boyfriend everytime we go on a date but sadly he likes to switch things up. They have the best Chinese broccoli I've ever tasted in my life ! Anddddddd the salt and pepper shrimp is to die for!! Best Hing Kong style food in Houston. You can tell from the customers who all speak Cantonese with the staff that you're in the right place. I like the steamed fish, squids with preserves vegetables and pan fried seafood noodles from the lunch menu, all under $7! The lunch menu is even available on weekends unlike most restaurants in Chinatown. The clay pot rice with Chinese sausage and preserved ham from the main menu is the best in Texas. This is truly authentic Cantonese cooking. The prices can't be beat and the flavors are great as well. Come during lunch time for the best deals. Most items are only $5.18. There was also no line for lunch time on a Saturday . (Unlike Confucius where you're packed like sardines for lunch on the weekend) The only negative is that the place is in an older strip center so you can tell the place is run down. This is a cash only restaurant, although they may also take checks. It has the best pan fried noodles and General Tsao's Chicken of any place in Houston. The portions are huge and the prices are really reasonable, even cheap compared to other places. Everything here is perfect. I wish they were closer to where I live, I would eat here once a week. The place is a little small and fills up pretty quickly, they are in the Dynasty Mall off of Bellaire, which is also next to a fascinating grocery store, so there is a huge parking lot. Some times the waiters just bring you extra food for no reason at no charge. Be careful if you go here and don't live close by, you will find yourself with cravings to drive to the other side of town, just to get a little food. read more

Used to go to Le Lai all the time with my family back when I first moved to Houston. We'd always go all out with all the Chinese favorites: peking duck, clay pot, lobster, clams, crab soup etc. etc. But we haven't gone in recent days because Vinh Hoa has stolen our hearts. Out of nostalgia, some family and I decided to come back and give it a shot again. Mostly because my sister has poor taste and does not like Vinh Hoa. She's pretty notorious in our family for hating the things that everyone else loves, and that's why we don't love her. JK! :P We had never tried the lunch specials before, and for $5 a dish...why the hell not? So we ordered five of the lunch special dishes between the three of us. We each got a bowl of chicken broth that comes with the lunch specials. My bowl had chicken in it, while my sister and her husband got a piece of corn on the cob or some carrots. I win. The food came out pretty fast. We got the salt and pepper squid (my favorite thing to get at all Chinese places), beef with snow peas, chinese broccoli, crispy chow mein with seafood and the salt and pepper shrimp. The two salt and pepper dishes were good, I like the squid better down at Vinh Hoa but the shrimp is pretty delicious. The beef with snow peas was as you'd expect, a little salty and not enough meat. The chinese broccoli was fine, although they skimped a little in portion for that particular plate. The crispy chow mein AKA mi xao don was terrible, utterly devoid of any flavor like they forgot to put salt on everything. It was sadly left untouched. Lunch specials, not really worth, imho. My bro in law and I were so jealous of nearby tables, who were smart enough to order off the dinner menu. All the clay pots, fried whole fish and etc that we COULD HAVE HAD. Moral of the story: when at Le Lai, order what all the cool old Asian people around you are ordering. Or just go for the family meals. Or go to Vinh Hoa, my forever favorite :) read more

You can't find another great quality with great price Cantonese restaurant in Houston than this place. Their lunch specials are unbelievable and the taste and quantity of the dishes are excellent. The only con is that when we went here they didn't have any live fresh tilapia or cod for us to order even though it was on the menu. Definitely will be coming back often. read more

one of the best kept secrets in chinatown. The food is excellent, i usually order the chicken breast with ginger and scallions or the beef with ginger and scallions, beef with xo sauce, fried squid, black pepper beef, clams with black bean sauce. Their salted fish and chicken fried rice is a must try - better than most places in China Town. These are all good choices. The owner is usually there and she makes sure you get great service and food quality. One time they got my order wrong and I said I dont mind keeping the wrong dish because I kinda liked it as well but they were soo insistent to get me the correct order. I come often only during the lunch time because of the cheap prices of only 4.50 for a very nice portion of food. A big favorite of mine is the salted peppered shrimp and sole fish. Both dishes are very flavorful and only 4 50 each however not everyone may like it due to the hassle it is to eat if your not used to eating shrimp along with its shell in one bite or the fish with bone still in. all in all the food is good for its price but can get costly at night. I love the food here. My favorites are the fresh mushroom dish and the salt pork spare ribs and salt fried squid. We always order these and sometimes we even order two of the mushroom dish. There's just something in the mushroom dish that makes it just pop in flavor. The long green bean dish though is not as flavorful as I would like.
