While I have a couple of notes, Le Valois was an excellent experience. If we split hairs, four-and-a-half, but easily rounded to five. I had the pleasure of trying: - Gazpacho (soup of the day) - Tuna Tataki - Salmon Tartare - Crème Brûlée - Espresso Gazpacho: The soup was creamy and not too salty. It also had pleasant savory notes and a hint of acidity and sweetness bestowed by the balsamic glaze. I also enjoyed the use of oil and fried onions. However, the soup either needed just a touch more solid ingredients or to be smaller, as I could only 'drink' so much. Tuna Tataki: For my taste, one quick adjustment short of perfection. The Tuna is cooked perfectly! It has a nice peppery crust and was griddled just enough to set it and render the fish by probably two millimeters. I also adored the pineapple salsa to add some sweetness and tang. Further, the veggies gave some welcome crispness. My critique lies with the sauce. It was heavy on the salt and thus overpowered the dish somewhat. Assuming this is full-sodium soy sauce, I recommend a lower-sodium option. Salmon Tartare: One hundred percent a slam dunk! A brilliant dish and one of my favorite Salmon Tartares of all time. The fish is of superior quality, but the real brilliance lies in the sauce. The amount of sauce is perfect to share the spotlight with the salmon, not take it over or shy away. For flavor, it has just enough salt to tease out flavors, a little bit of sweetness, and even some heat brought forth by the ginger. My compliments to the chef of this one, for the use of ginger is absolutely brilliant. Next, I enjoyed the house-made pickle. It was an excellent compliment to the salmon with mildly sweet and salty flavors. Finally, the fried onions were a nice touch here as well. My only note is that the crostinis were rather plain and so crunchy they almost set off the noise alarm on my Apple Watch! Crème Brûlée: A stupendously executed dessert exceeding my expectations. It is perfectly caramelized, not overly sweet, and has thick, luscious custard with berries mixed in. A lovely surprise against the much less viscous, berry-less, and over-sweet crème brûlées out there. Espresso: Great coffee, and nothing else to write about otherwise. Service: The service team did a terrific job taking care of me. They were professional, kind, friendly, and welcoming. They were clearly putting in effort to make sure I was happy and enjoying my meal and experience. The food came out pretty fast as well! Thus, while there are a couple minor notes about salt and crostinis, the food and flavor combinations are approached with the care and creativity that makes an eatery great. Add in fantastic service, and you have a winner! read more

Decided that we were hungry after a movie and went down to Ontario street to have a look around. Looked on Yelp to see what was open and this place came up just as we were passing it, gave it a go by calling and reserving 2 seats. Service wasn't very fast to get drinks or to get a refill of bread or even our food in that matter. The place was pretty empty for a Friday night but it was nearing the end of the night so maybe that's why. Appetizers were okay the chèvre for 16 bucks was lacking flavour and salt but the presentation skills was beautiful. The small Charcuterie platter was okay no mouth watering cold cuts or amazing pate. The beet was the best part. The burger was Veal and beef very delicious and tender. This cozy restaurant served me the most delicious brunch starting with a perfect cup of black (Union) coffee - medium roast, sipping temperature. The host and waiter were very attentive and did a fantastic job explaining menu items and the secret to their unbeatable smoked salmon. Yes, unbeatable. Breakfast came with deeply roasted home fries and a sweet, fresh fruit cup... In itself, a delicious offering, but not to be a distraction from the main course. I ordered their fried egg with smoked salmon over a buckwheat blini that was nothing short of amazing and I mean "amazing" in the way that you pronounce the word with extra syllables and perhaps pepper in a few expletives to increase the magnitude. My palate was awash with myriad sensations - crunchy, creamy, smoky, rich, bright, all in each perfect bite (definition: a "perfect bite" contains a bit of each element from the dish in one forkful/mouthful/spoonful). It came under the recommendation of our server and was later explained as a town favorite for the seasonal smoked salmon which is so expertly prepared in-house. A short walk off the Pie-IX or Joliette Metro stops, this is a true gem for anyone who happens to enjoy food to any degree. Just wear tight fitting shoes in the event, as was my experience, your socks get blown off. read more

The foie gras as an entrée was good although pricey. The cocktails are excellent if you like classic cocktails. The hamburger is good for price, but you homemade hamburgers can be just as good. Food and service was wonderful! It's off the beaten path for most tourists, but we were visiting the botanical gardens. Love the vibe.

The meal started with an appetizer of eye candy - attractive servers! Alex made helpful suggestions, and was attentive and pleasant. He steered me away from a heavy beer to a more tasty local beer - good suggestion! Menus come in French, but English is readily available if you just ask. I had the black pudding and my husband had the braised beef. Both prepared and presented to perfection! The chutney has plenty of delicious fresh garlic. We finished with liquors and coffees with our Creme brulee and passion fruit mousse. So tasty that we shared! Well worth the brief drive from our Mont-Royal neighbourhood. I had been told to try this restaurant on many occasions so I jumped at the opportunity when it arose. The dining room is small but they have a terrasse for added seating in the summer time. I'd recommend a reservation just to play it safe since it is becoming fairly well known. The decor is another big plus for this place. They did a great job of decorating it. I came for brunch so I can't comment on the lunch and dinner menu but I will say that I liked what I experienced. I ordered the eggs benedict with smoked salmon and spinach. The hollandaise sauce was a bit on the salty side but overall it was quite good and they didn't skimp on the smoked salmon. I also loved the way they seasoned the potatoes that came with the dish. They smelled good and tasted even better! The service was very efficient and friendly and in all I enjoyed my experience here. I would definitely like to go back to try the lunch and dinner menu. It's also about a 15 minute walk from the Botanical Gardens so if you're going there it is worth coming here for a delicious meal. read more

My friend lives down the street and I wanted to see what the Hochelaga Bourgeoisie eats, this is a fancy restaurant that's in a neighborhood full of hot dog, poutine and pizza joints. The first thing I noticed is the size and layout, not traditional and must be gorgeous in the summer with terrace and park. The waiter was very friendly and the service was good. The food was hit and miss, I had the shrimp with sweet and sour sauce,($9 for three jumbo pieces). Amazing, except for the sauce, but no big deal My friend had the Calamari, which is not fried, so a bit disappointing as the long winded description did not say if it was grilled, fried, or something between boiled and zapped. Onto the mains, my friend had the salmon, which was ok, I had the rib steak ($29), big letdown, it was grey to begin with and lacked flavor, texture, I had to force myself to finish it. The desserts were very good, I had the cronut with maple ice cream ($8) I must include this in my review by mentioning i got a little bit sick after my meal, It was the only mealy I had after waking up and did not eat for many hours afterwards. I hope it's a one off and not something that happens too often. I would go back to try other stuff as they have a cheaper nighttime menu for $20, which is a bargain, might raise my rating a bit. read more

Ventured off to HoMa for a night out as oppose to our usual downtown settings. Luckily, this place has a late menu starting at 9:30pm. Stunning art deco look with a rustic touch. Good : The grilled calamari was by far my favorite dish. Maybe even one of my top 3 fave calamari dishes. The sauce compliments it really well, and the portion was a decent size for an appetizer. The decor is beautiful inside, the lighting and ambiance is very cozy. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were greeted by a very welcoming host, and the service was pretty much spot on. I ordered the artic char, which was well cooked but nothing mind blowing. Bad : My boyfriend ordered the goat cheese croquette, which turned out to be a big piece of breaded goat cheese. It was good, but half the portion would've sufficed. It was just a but too heavy, and the flavor was just too overpowering. We also ordered the mushroom ravioli, which sounds better than it taste. The ravioli was a bit under cooked, and the creme sauce was a bit too strong, which you can barely even taste the mushrooms. Bottom line : the terrace looks fantastic, which is probably great for summer. Might return again if I am in the area. read more

Tasty French cuisine in the middle of HoMa is a definite surprise. For those who live in the neighborhood and like a treat every now and then, Le Valois is a very nice restaurant. The tasteful decor makes the place feel very inviting even when there are few patrons. The wine list is well curated, and the food is always excellent. Though I've usually had excellent service, there has been a time or two when I thought the service wasn't well managed to my liking. But as a whole, the experience is always memorable, and I recommend Le Valois to anyone in the want of fine dining. As a side note: for those that are vegetarian, there are a few options to choose out of that are just as delicious as any thing else on the menu. read more

The first time we just had a cheese platter, it was tasty so we decided to come back another time to try some of their food. Not great. We had a brunch consisting of: a burned pastry thing that was bland as all hell, and a hamburger that was spiced badly and the bun wasn't fresh at all. They also make a pretty horrible Caesar..BOO! Very good food, but very, very loud. We went there for brunch on a Sunday morning, but we couldn't hear ourselves talk over the noise. The service is quick though. Not particularly pleasant or friendly, but efficient. I had the egg croquettes on blinis (which are pancakes last time I checked, not a dry cake-bread hybrid). The dryness was somewhat compensated by the generous portion of whipped herb chantilly and smoked salmon though. Great presentation, with the caviar being a nice touch. We were greeted by a super nice waitress. After getting help navigating the french menu, we decided to have eggs Benedict and french toast (pain dore). The hollandaise sauce was done from scratch. Each plate included an assortment of fruits. The french toast was constructed of two huge slices of brioche bread and topped with a fruit reduction (as opposed to generic jelly from a jar). We were all over paris and the Loire valley. We came for a good experience- Michelin starred restaurants to Bistros written up and we'll recommended. The food here was adequate. The service was worse than anything we received at any place around the entire city including a small street vendor. They were rude, emulated typical Parisian snobbery and got the order wrong- continually- without apology. If you are American or not Parisienne - avoid this place. If you speak perfect French... My guess is they are still a very low level of service. But maybe you have a better chance of ignoring or managing poor service read more

The worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. Terrible, disorganized service. We went on a Monday evening at 5:30. We were seated immediately but were given no menus. We sat there for 35 minutes without a waiter even looking our way. No menus, no water, no drink order taken. When I finally managed to flag someone down, the waitress acted surprised and didn't even apologize. She took our drink order and that took another 10 minutes to arrive. We were actually in the middle of getting up to leave when they came. We immediately asked for our bill as we no longer wanted to eat there and the waitress again acted surprised and said okaaaaay. Again, no apology. The table next to us told us we made the right decision and they'd been waiting close to an hour for their food. When she brought us our bills she was very rude and ripped the machine out of our hands in exasperation. The food coming out actually looked good, but I will never go back to try it. Horrible, horrible service and very rude staff. I'd give it zero stars if I could. read more
