I'm a lazy shopper and don't like stuff that is too trendy. Judy - the owner there - clearly has an incredible eye for sourcing pieces that are elegant but modern. I've purchased several necklaces that ALWAYS get compliments from here. It's also a fantastic place to go if you're running around before an event and don't have anything to wear. I like that there's a variety of splurge and simple pieces. The other thing that's nice is that the people working here will help or let you browse as much as you want. I personally like a lot of help picking dresses, but I've had days when I just want to walk around the store and see what will inspire me. This boutique, and its sister store Cassis are my favorite places to shop. Judy, Catherine and other staff members are great, occasionally pulling items that surprise, delight and break me out of my black/brown/grey rut. They have a great range of items, from casual weekend wear to occasion dresses to suits and other office-wear. Most items stand out from the usual, featuring an interesting color or pattern, silhouette, ruffle, neckline, etc. They also have an abundance of accessories, including jewelry, shoes, belts, scarves, purses. What a great store! This locally owned shop has a wide variety of items, from staple designer clothes to more unique brands that you won't find anywhere else. Their denim collection is also amazing! I love boutique stores. Came in here after lunch at Pastis last time. The pretentious girl working rolled her eyes before speaking and asked something along the lines of, "WHAT do you want?!" in such a manner that it was obvious she thought I couldn't afford to shop there. Don't indirectly call your potential customers poor. Seriously. The way she acted was almost as if I was Julia Roberts in the movie, "Pretty Woman" (except I didn't look like a H!), as if she didn't want to waste her energy on someone who wouldn't purchase something. I bet she practices being like that in her spare time. She had the scene down to the T. Even if I did want to buy something, the way I was treated would not allow me to spend half a penny in that store. It's fine, I'm not interested in wearing goddy, old lady clothing anyways. Okay, I'm older now and the body is not in the hard shape it used to be in. What's more, I can't (or really shouldn't) wear twenty-something clothing. Leaf and Petal is the answer to 35+ something year olds. Fashionable clothing that make you look great come at a price tag. Expect to pay at least $150+ for a pair of everyday pants. I don't rate retail shops often but walked in looking for a particular type of shirt. First woman I saw and asked a question of looked me dead in the eye, finished folding her clothes and turned and walked into the back w.o. so much as a smile of acknowledgement. Ouch. I believe it was the middle woman in the photo. I obviously did not fit the shopper profile she wanted to greet. Fortunately the woman in left of photo was pleasant and helpful. I ended up purchasing bc I knew what I wanted and found something although the experience was somewhat soured. What is funny to me is that I don't like shopping but I know what I want and I'm quick to find it. I believe that you get better fitting and longer lasting items if you buy quality. All in all when I do shop I am a quick, considerable sale w little customer service required. It would seem to be worthwhile to pretend to be welcoming for 20 mins. Or smile. Over 10 years I have purchased several items here and still wear most of those items. The quality is great and the prices reflect that. I purchased a suit, jeans, shirts, boots, and shoes. I usually stop by since I work close by and I have a particular item that I need. One time I needed a black dress for a party. I left 20 minutes later with a dress and shoes - perfect! More recently, I stopped in to get a sweater to coordinate with an orange dress. The salesperson helped me find a great little sweater that is now one of my favorites. They carry unique pieces and also high quality ordinary pieces that are perfect for work. I haven't had any bad experiences with the service like some others have complained about. read more

This is definitely one of my all time favorite stores! Ok, so I do have to wait for sales and/or gift certificates to help my pocketbook stretch the cost but that is also due in part to the fact that when I'm there, I find so many beautiful, well made & flattering pieces that I end up investing in my wardrobe instead of just walking out with one thing. I totally disagree with some of the other reviews here - their customer service is wonderful and I wouldn't be shopping here if it wasn't. Their staff give me great advice, suggesting complementing pieces that fit perfectly while I'm still in the dressing room. I totally trust their fashion sense and find myself set up in advance of the latest NY Times fashion blogs for upcoming trends. They're also super warm and welcoming even when I'm dragging in my little children because I'm looking to pick up a gift for someone (and sneak peek for something maybe for me!). There's no judging - just super helpful and intelligent staff. I know that what I can find there will wear well, will make me look AMAZING, and they make it fun to discover each piece. I like the idea of this store and have no problem with the $300 jersey shirts that hang among the $160 and $60 t-shirts, etc. (those are for others, not me). Many are high-quality design, I suppose. It always seems like I should find more to buy other than the occasional t-shirt I buy here. I'm even the middle-aged woman that make up the clientele the store is targeting. Beware the return policy: I recently purchased a t-shirt there, a size and brand I've purchased before. At home, I found it was too sheer---you'd have to wear a camisole under it. I also purchased a $150 scarf, which is investment $ for me. I tried to return the t-shirt the next day and was told that it had been marked down and so it was not returnable. This had not been stated when I purchased it the day before. In fact, I didn't know it was discounted until I found the receipt. There had been a sign next to a rack outside stating "30% off"---I assumed it was just for the rack, not for items inside. So just be mindful of such things when you're here. They might not tell you. And at least one clerk very much likes to tell you that your garment is not returnable. That spoiled the experience for me. I haven't been back. read more

Not only is customer service lacking, the return policy is so 1950's. They are catering to a clientele that must have nothing but time on their hands. They only let you return after 3 days for a full refund or 2 weeks for store credit. I found this out the hard way - I went in a Saturday and bought a bunch of things - that I loved, but did not have the time to try things on with my kids with me. I was able to try things on at home and decided to keep a couple of items and return the rest. I was not able to get back to the store until the following Saturday (yes, a whole 7 days later) and was only able to get store credit for my return. I love their merchandise, I would have been a dedicated customer, but knowing that I can not buy something and try it on with shoes at home and return it a week later for a refund, completely turns me off. Leaf & Petal: Some of us have jobs and small children and cant make it back in three days. Wake up and realize that we live in an age of Zappos: a society that is customer focused! read more

Leaf and Petal is a great little women's clothing boutique in Old Town Palo Alto. Right next to Brioche (makes a great Sunday morning combo) this little store offers items ranging from Custo shirts and sweaters to some of the more popular premium denim brands. The satff is pretty friendly, though I am not so sure of their expertise. One thing that's a little different about Leaf and Petal is that they seem to organize the clothing by color value, so you can pretty easily see all the options you have for putting together a nicely matching outfit, or just the variety of pieces int eh store. read more

I think Leaf & Petal has a wonderful selection of clothing and accessories - love, love, love the drawers and drawers of jewelry that you can open yourself! Also, the gorgeous handbags. The staff are very cheerful and nice. The store is clean, very orderly and peaceful - a great environment for shopping. This was my first visit and I did not have much time - but, I will say this...they have lots of hip styles/designers. - and it is very well merchandised. Definitely sophisticated and for the over 33 crowd [which I am], but not an "old lady" in sight! This is a boutique, so expect to pay more. I am a very satisfied customer. I loved my shopping experience. Katherine (I hope the spelling is correct) is a wonderful sales person. She was low-keyed and extremely helpful. Also, was conscious of my budget! I've lost more than 50 lbs and didn't have a clue re: size or what would now look good. Upscale(i.e. $$$) but original casual clothing. If you want a more distinctive look than what you'll find at Stanford Mall, come to Leaf & Petal. I usually wait to shop their sales a couple times a year so I don't get caught up in sticker shock. Sister store to Cassis. Came here to check out their sale and walked out poorer but with some super-hot jeans and tops and also got a great deal on a really sexy LBD. They have a huge selection of pricey but cute jeans and pants. I don't mind paying a bit more for a really great pair of jeans that I'll wear a lot. Bonus points for giving me a credit on the cocktail dress I bought a couple weeks before at Cassis which I found here on sale! I'll be back once my checking account recovers...ouch! read more

When I want to find special chic, modern clothing that I won't see everywhere, I go to Leaf & Petal or Cassis. They carry upscale brands that are still affordable, but most importantly, they help me put together "outfits" so that I don't come home with random pieces that don't go together. They have gotten to know my "style" so that shopping is quick and painless, and their recommendations are always wonderful. Okay...let's start with the fact that I hate to shop. I love great clothes, but I hate the shopping experience that is available in most places. Leaf and Petal is an extraordinary exception. In order for me to be "5-star happy", I have to have a great experience with both the staff and the selection of clothing. Let's start with the staff. Everyone here is extremely helpful, but that's not enough. They also know their lines (meaning the manufacturer's lines they carry). That's what puts them over the top. They understand the fit of all their lines, and after they've seen a couple of things on you they are extremely helpful in steering you towards flattering styles. I also like to put together whole outfits in an eclectic way. The staff is particularly good at trolling the store for you, and coming up with great combinations. On to the clothing lines they carry. I would characterize their lines as stylish, eclectic, and appropriate for a lifestyle that includes both professional and casual requirements. Yansi Fugel (great for travel), Dianne von Furstenburg, Velvet, Cambio, Joe's Jeans, Vivienne Tam should give you a feel for the store. And let's talk accessories, which is my favorite thing to shop for (I guess I do like to shop for something!). They have a wonderful array of jewelry and shoes (also belts and bags). All very carefully chosen. I'd much rather have a limited array of very good things, than a wide array of less-than-lovely choices! Very specifically, I will echo another reviewer and call-out Malika as a great sales person with a great eye. Catherine is talented as well. But I've found everyone working there to be expecially helpful. I've just come from yet another great shopping experience there, which is why I'm so specific in my review. And a note on parking---if there's nothing on California Street, there is parking available in the back public lot. read more

This store has some pretty things, but the customer service is very poor. I wanted to purchase an expensive jacket, but the sleeves needed shortening and I wanted to first take it to a tailor to see if this was possible as there were buttons and stichting that may not allow for this. Their return policy is 3 days and it was on a Friday, so I asked the owner/mgr if it would be possible to have an extra day to return if needed after I purchase the jacket to allow me to take the jacket to my tailor on Monday and see if it was possible to shorten the sleeves and she said no. This was not my only negative experience in this store, but it was enough to stop me from shopping there again. read more
