This review is long overdue - we first visited the Madewell store at Stanford Shopping Center back in February, and we've been back several times since. I want to give a special shout-out to Teresa, the store manager, who made our first visit truly exceptional. My teen daughter was feeling shy and awkward walking in (shopping for jeans will do that), and let's be real - the last person she wanted style advice from was me. But Teresa was a total gem. She was friendly, approachable, and instantly put my daughter at ease. She listened carefully to what my daughter was looking for, then came back with a ton of great options. While my daughter was trying on jeans, Teresa even pulled some sale items for me (bonus points!). I honestly expected to walk out with maybe one thing, but we left with quite a haul - and it was 100% worth it. Teresa also let me know about Madewell's free alterations for rewards members, which I had somehow missed even though I've shopped there for years. The entire staff had Teresa's same energy - welcoming, enthusiastic, and genuinely helpful. Between the personalized service, quality of the clothes, and how good my daughter felt walking out, the experience was more than worth the money we spent. 10/29/23 I returned to order the petite jeans. This time the POS system was working. Teresa was very polite and helpful in getting my jeans ordered and expedited to me. I asked for the name of yesterday's cashier because I'd like to acknowledge her. She was very polite and patient while I tried to get my credit card problem resolved. Her name, I believe is Raji.. thank you all at Madewell 10/28/23 Today I went shopping for jeans. I've worn Madewell jeans for quite a few years now so I stopped in there to see if I could find a replacement pair of jeans. I found that the style I currently have do not fit the same way as before so I tried on a new style, Vintage in dark wash. Hummm I liked them but since I'm short, the salesperson, Christina, suggested I try the petite version of the jeans. I decided to go ahead and purchase the ones they had in the store and order the petite version. When it came time to process the purchases, my credit card kept getting declined. I called my credit card company and they assured me that the card was working. It still would not process...the cashier there was very kind and patient, which I very much appreciated. She tried and tried and even moved the sale to a different register. Nothing worked. Brian, one of the managers came over to see what was happening and took the time to assist me in determining what the problem was. I am very appreciative of his professionalism and patience as we continued to try to get my card to work. It turned out that the simple purchase transaction went fine, but there was a problem with the on-line order where my card address was different from the ship to address. Brian hung in there with me trying everything and never showed any impatience. I am very impressed with the level of customer service and patience I experienced today...It was not a huge sale, just a pair of jeans. Thank you Madewell for the excellent customer service. Pretty good service, tidy store, and decent selection of their items. Huge fan of their clothes and definitely love to browse in-person every now and then. Pros: Items were tidy and easy to search through. Clean, neat fitting rooms. Staff on the floor were helpful and patient when finding specific items, but definitely busy even on weekdays. Cons: A total zoo on the weekends! I saw so much traffic coming in and out of it a few weekends ago, I steered clear. If I go at all, it would be on a weekday. Not the closest to the parking areas. They only have a subset of the jean selection they have so it's still hard to try on specific cuts which may fit differently by wash / model. This brand has an incredible number of jean types but unfortunately the sizing isn't the most consistent, so I wish they had a wider selection of all the jeans they offer, especially some of the special size / cuts such as the curvy denim. read more

Yay! I no longer need to drive down to Santana Row to ship! So in college, the low riding barely clinging to your hipbones style of jeans were everywhere. The kind where when you bend over, half your rump would fall out? Yeah. Not for me anymore. Professionalism and practicality finally set in. This is where you can find a comfortably normally cut pair of jeans that encapsulate your entire rear end. And they're comfortable and reasonable priced! Somehow all the Paige's, Sevens, and Citizens have been now chilling on my bottom shelf feeling very unloved. The experience in this store can be a hit or miss. I ordered a pair of shoes on a trip to Manhattan and they offered free shipping to my home. Unfortunately the boots that showed up were brown and not black. I dragged the whole order in and the gal was super annoyed to have to deal with. When I ordered there was a discount on the black and she wanted to do a return and repurchase and not an exchange. Frustrated, I left with the wrong color shoes and Santana Row not only had the right color and size in stock, they did an exchange and I left with a cute new pair of booties I love. read more

This place has great clothes and amazing jeans. I don't normally pay this much for jeans but they fit really well and there won't be any other pair of jeans you need. I can live in them. They also had extra 40% off of sale. If you're lucky to find a pair of jeans in your size in the sale section, try them on! LAUREN helped me and she was extremely helpful helping me find my size and find the perfect fit. When paying over $100 for a pair of jeans you want to make sure to find the perfect pair and she definitely was very helpful! Lots of dressing rooms. Also if you bring in an old pair of jeans (doesn't haven't to be madewell) you get $20 off of a pair of full priced jeans. the weekend I was there, it was $30 off so I gave up the pair I was wearing at the moment!! read more

I came to this shop and instantly liked it more than I expected. The clothes are made true to size, easy to wear, and no flashy colors. A lot of earthy tones and muted colors, very subtle. The clothes are also made of really fine materials and there is hardly any mark up on the price at all. I think many people will catch on to Madewell. read more

Madewell is one of my favorite stores! I wish there were more locations across NorCal. This specific location is a part of the Stanford Shopping Center. The store is very organized and well-laid out. Customer service is always on point here. Don't forget to bring your student ID card - you get an extra 15% off your entire purchase when you show it at check out (on top of the sales that are going on)! I would say the only downside is that their items are on the pricier side, so some things aren't worth the price tag. My favorite Madewell item is the jeans! They're made of super stretchy but still jean-like material. They look like jeans but feel comfy like leggings. Try them on if you ever get a chance to. read more

Madewell has very unique jewelry, the faux gold chains and rings are awesome, very distinct from this store, delicate and durable. I always get bracelets and necklaces to bring to girlfriends overseas, as they don't know the store and they always get that spark of happiness in their eyes. I see this store like a mini Anthropologie (for some reason they carry many of the same items, just I think cheaper, such as some beauty products and other cute little nothings that mean something to the giftee:). I normally have good service at Madewell (have been shopping there for a few years) but I had a disappointing exchange at this location. Full disclosure: I showed up very near to closing time on a Wednesday. The sales girl's eyes got wide, and she started to tell me they were closing in 5 minutes, and I said, "totally get it, I will be quick". I immediately grabbed the jeans I wanted to try, and she said "Sorry! Our fitting rooms are closed." When I told her that I had tried stuff on at this location a week ago, she says "our fitting rooms close at 6:30 during Covid". I understand there are restrictions during Covid, but this was "I don't care if we sell anything else, I just want to go home." I'm sure management would love this customer service. ;) read more

Very disappointing customer service. Several SAs noticed me enter--it was a pretty quiet Saturday--and not a single one greeted me or tried to pretend I was a welcome customer. I don't think it was racially or socioeconomically motivated--I'm a very well-heeled white Woman and the staff was white--so my assumption is that they're poorly trained and doing what so many young retail workers do, which is hide their own deficiencies behind the cachet of a retail brand. Honestly, it's for the best. I was left to wander around trying to figure out why this place is popular and why it's called "Madewell." The clothing seemed primarily to be thin, cheap poly or poly blends that remind me of the occasional foray through an H&M or a Forever 21, god help us. Dumbest clerks there. The mouse brown shoulder length girl about early 20s was taking away my own clothes from the dressing room twice, while I went out to find other sizes bc nobody was helping me. You think she would learn the first time around, and notice that an item of clothing looked like it didn't belong to the store. Like a brainless twit that she was, she kept mindlessly putting away clothes. Looks like she will always be doing this for her whole life since she couldn't think her way out of this situation. Then when I asked about one of the items she put away, she said she would go find it which she never did. Then when I asked her about it, she just said simply someone else must have picked it up, sorry. She didn't look sorry at all, with her smug look on her face. Bc of this, I didn't buy anything and will never buy from this brand. I'll tell all my friends too. Madewell has the MOST flattering jeans I've ever tried. They have lots of denim rinses, cuts, and offer to order different styles online. You may be wondering why the three stars. In my past experiences at madewell, I've felt very welcomed and have received marvelous help with jean sizing and styling. Today was an unpleasant experience with two of the sale associates in the fitting room area. Two of the girls (younger) were obviously annoyed with my questions and were very irritated with all of the pants I tried on, as they were not thrilled getting me another size. They're tone of voice made me feel unwelcome to try on more jeans. However, not all of their employees acted similarly. There was a slightly older lady with a red headband that gave me great advice for sizing. Additionally, the cashier was incredibly friendly and hospitable. I always have a great time at madewell, besides this occasion. I only give three stars so that the staff can take note of the behavior today and can remind their employees to maintain the same bright energy and friendly attitude towards customers consistently. :) read more

This location could definitely use some improvements in the customer service area. The two times I asked for assistance I felt like I was bothering the associates. I asked to try something on and the woman I asked seemed so annoyed and said, let me see if one is open, despite there being an open room right in front of us. I found another skirt I wanted to try on and I almost didn't want to ask her for a room again. When I went to the register to pay for my items I saw a wallet I liked and asked the woman who was ringing me up about the color options. Her first response was "I don't know" and then, "oh, there's another color literally right in front of you." I was thinking about buying it but she came off as so irritated and annoyed I just put it back. I get this is near a college campus and I bet there are a lot of annoying students who come in, but I was pretty surprised at how rude the sales associates were. read more

I put two leather pouches on hold today at this location, after doing some research online. I decided to take a look at them in person, because colors can look different when viewed digitally. I called them up, and a sales girl was kind enough to hold the pouches for me, once she confirmed their availability (as a side note, I wish there was an option on their website, to check the stock in local stores, because it's faster than making a phone call or two [Santana Row's location was out, for instance, so I had to check this one. Fortunately, they had both colors in stock.]). I dropped by today later in the afternoon. I went straight for the accessories section, to see if there was still more on the floor to pick from. I found one tinted blush pouch left, with several more, in the violet dusk color. I settled on the violet one, but wanted to take a look at the ones the girl had set aside for me, earlier in the day, in case the leather on the ones she set aside, was better (each item is unique). I lined up behind the one customer in the store who was making a large and long purchase. It was good that another sales person, a Caucasian girl, took notice of the line and came up to me to help me. She was really sweet and friendly. I asked her about the two pouches I put on hold earlier in the day, and she began to search for them. Her companion, the Caucasian male, handling the check-out process of the other customer next to me, told her that he put them back on display because they weren't labeled as reserved. Hmmmm. Well, I can see how this was an easy mistake to make, however, I was just lucky that I came by on a day with just 1-2 other customers other than myself, in the store, otherwise, I could have wasted a trip dropping by, in case the item/s were picked up by someone else, since there was only one blush pouch left. I would suggest a better system for reserving items, such as actually leaving a physical note, "reserved", so as not to cause any miscommunication amongst the staff. The girl who reserved the pouches for me earlier in the day, only took my name. I guess she didn't tell her co-workers about their "reserved" status. As for the quality, this is the first time I've made a purchase at Madewell. The clothing is not my style, but their accessories, on the other hand, I always took notice for the good quality leather. It just took some time for them to churn out more leather products in more colors, because previously, they only had leather products in the traditional "brown leather color". Hopefully they continue carrying items in more colors. I'll come back more often, if I'm in the market for minimalist leather products and they carry on with this trend. One star was docked-down because my reserved items were mistakenly "un-reserved" due to misinformation. Lastly, if you sign-up for their "VIP" program, which is free of charge, you immediately get free shipping on all online purchases. Also, as a note, neither this location nor the Santana Row location offers monogramming service on the spot. It's the San Francisco location that does, according to the sales persons I spoke with at this location and at the Santana Row location. read more

The customer service was a bit odd. I had seen a pair of jeans online that were back ordered and was happy to see them in this store in my sizes. I stood by the fitting rooms for a long time, and one employee even told me it wouldn't be much longer. Another employee asked who was next, and I thought i was because I had been standing there a while before anyone else. Oh but no, apartently an employee is supposed to put your name on a hook, but no one ever told me that, including the girl who asked if I was waiting and said it wouldn't be much longer. I thought it was very rude. So a few other people went ahead of me, and I don't think all of them had "their names on hook". I went in there fully intending to buy the $100 jeans to promote on my fashion blog. But instead, I went to Urban Outfitters and bought $100 jeans because their customer service is way better, and not stuck up. read more

YAYYY x1000. Madewell has finally arrived at the Stanford Shopping Center! I was beyond happy when I found out that a store was opening in Palo Alto, right in my backyard! Nearly half my wardrobe is made up of Madewell so you can imagine my excitement. I placed the opening date on my calendar as I planned to be first in line for one of the gift cards they were handing out, but sadly I had to attend an early morning class so couldn't make it. :( I stopped by after work and was pleasantly surprised at how full the store was...which means I am not the only one who loves Madewell. Really liked that they had a ton of staff there helping customers with questions and styling tips. I even scored a free (super chic) Bien Fait tote bag with my purchase. One can never have too many totes, especially if they're from Madewell! For the opening celebration, they had a DJ, Bay Area bloggers, sips, and yummy snacks. So much fun!! I made a yelp account just to review my experience at the insider event from yesterday. First off the insider event was busy, so for the future make sure you come early if you are participating. There had to be about thirty people in line for check out by the time i arrived. Anyway, there was a long line for the fitting room as well. It looked like only one girl was able to let people in and help grab sizes. I believe her name was amber. I don't think I have ever met someone that was able to multi task getting people into fitting rooms, grab sizes in shoes, and getting items for the rooms that were already filled. She moved so fast but was so poised! I didn't expect much of service as there wasnt many people available to help. So once my name was called I headed to the fitting room with my daughter. Amber took me to my room and even asked for my daughter's name. She never forgot our names either. After about five minutes of scrambling with no luck she came by my fitting room to check in. She told me that the sizes but I got were too big and she also helped my daughter with sizing. She came back with the different sizes and other items she thought we would like and we ended up leaving the fitting room with everything she brought over. We wouldn't have found the tall jeans without her help nor the shoes and tops! I will be coming back to future events as long as she is there. I had shopped in the one in New York before and even though that particular location was chaotic because of the narrow boutique set up, two floors and being completely packed, I received more timely, friendlier and complete customer service in New York than I have received in the Palo Alto location. The Palo Alto location is new. It never seems particularly busy. It's clean (probably helps when there is no foot traffic, seemingly) and it seems merchandised to standard. I walked in with my sister, there were probably about 10 people in the store shopping and more than a handful of employees scattered throughout the store. I probably walked a full circle, twice, in the store and was not asked once if I would like assistance, shown any new product line or even offered a fitting room when I wanted to try something on. In fact, I had walked up to the fitting room attendant with a single item to try on. She said that the fitting rooms were all in use and I'd have to wait until one opens up. She took my name down and she said she'd call my name when a room opened up. I stepped aside to wait. 15 mins later I'm standing nearby waiting, and a fitting room opens up. She puts another customer into the fitting room. This happens, twice more within a 5 minute span. I was completely baffled by this. I'm literally standing RIGHT THERE. I step the three steps away I had been waiting patiently and she says "Hi, how can I help you?" To which I reply "I wanted to try that sweater on, I have been waiting for a fitting room." She says "Oh, I'm so sorry..." I cut her off and said, "No, you helped 3 customers into fitting rooms, while I have been waiting right here, and I've been waiting longer. So YOU can put the item back, I'm done. I'm just done." I felt the whole experience was totally inexcusable, I couldn't find a realistic reason that any of what I had experienced here was reasonable. Between all of the employees available not one greeted, not one offered to show me anything, not one tried to make the attempt to style me based on what I was holding, and I couldn't try on the one item I was looking at. I really do like Madewell products but because of this experience I will stick to only going to their locations when I'm on the east coast or online. read more

First time at Madewell- the key is the stylist, Julia. Wow! This was the first time I ever felt this confident about buying clothing. Julia selected jeans for me, guided me on hem length, showed me tips on how to wear t-shirts to lengthen my body, gave me insider info about sleeve length, and informed me about dimensions/ratios re: clothing and my body. For me, it has always been a guessing game to know what looks good on me- this was the first time I worked with a stylist, not a salesperson- and I was fortunate to just walk in and meet her. Madewell is lucky to have a stylist of this caliber on staff. Julia is so personable, and importantly, honest. Her goal is to empower women with confidence in their look. This had not been my go-to store. I had walked in but it seemed that stuff was a bit pricier than I wanted to pay. HOWEVER, I had a horrible experience at my "go-to" store. I am not a shopper. Well, if I really need to buy something I am the worst. I need help. Thus going to a pricier, smaller establishment. I decided at 3pm on my anniversary that I needed something new. (I know, stupid) After a horrific experience elsewhere I toddled into Madewell. The young woman asked if she could help me. I burst into tears. Which did not seem to surprise her. Within 45 minutes she had helped me find something that was to my taste (which was odd because when I walked in I did not see anything that seemed like I would wear it) and I purchased a wide variety of items. So, I have a new "go-to" place. Oh, and what I purchased was a lot cheaper (this being a relative term) that I expected. WINNING!!!!
