7 years ago, this cute little sapling popped up in one of my flowerpots, so I planted it in my yard…read morebetween the house, and the fence. I figured it was native to Texas, and I wanted a bit of shade in the backyard. It grew like a weed, and in three years it was giving us shade. In six years, it was over the roof, giving us shade, dropping leaves and twigs regularly, and we had to duck under its branches to mow the yard! I thought it might be a weeping willow, and I kinda fell in love with it. Unfortunately, I was the only one weeping, as the white willow's roots made a move on my house's foundation, and plumbing! Sorry Will, but ya gotta go! I searched Yelp, found several tree services that were local, and sent a short list to the husband. He called the one I put last on the list--skipping my top choices. He made the call, and Big Gorilla's owner showed up to give us an estimate. BGTS was $1,000 lower than a spitball quote we got from our roofer. I hate making decisions like this, and thought about getting more estimates....but I'm a procrastinator at heart, and I was impressed with BGTS's competent attitude. I decided to just get it done. The team of four--I think--came out the next day, blocking my driveway, (I didn't love that, but there's not much room on our street,) putting up cones to block their trucks, and got to work. By lunch, the tree was gone, the stump was ground six inches below the ground, and the roots threatening my house were dug up and destroyed. They had even gathered up all the sticks around the tree, and removed the debris as well. They left a small mound of woodchips to cover the hole left behind. My husband watched them on our home cameras, and he said they had pulled out monstrous roots, snaking through the yard. It's kind of sad to see the tree gone. It's even sadder to see the money gone to remove it. Not gonna lie, I thought about buying a chainsaw and sending hubs, and son-in-law out for a much cheaper DIY. But arms and fingers don't grow back, and even if they could take it down, the stump would remain without buying the heavy equipment. BGTS did exactly what I needed. They were on time, professional, efficient, didn't damage my plumbing, or the sprinkler system, cleaned up after themselves, and took a credit card payment at the door. They will now be first on my list I'm shopping for fruit trees now!

Timely, professional and cost effective. I appreciate their workmanship and highly recommend.read more

Just found my new favorite *local* garden center! Native Gardeners is, of course, all about NATIVE…read moreplants! There were some plants here and there that were nonnative but labeled as such. Kind of in a residential backyard but has a legitimate storefront and plenty of workers, so upon arrival you know you're in the right place be sure to check out their seed selection, there were some really neat options that I have never seen anywhere else. Ended up leaving with a Texas wisteria vine, Gulf Coast Muhly grass, sideoats grama, and several varieties of beautiful salvia. Excited to come again!

Buyer beware. Native Gardeners sold me multiple separate, tiny trees crammed together in 5-gallon…read morepots and represented them as single, multi-trunked trees. This happened twice--once with a Texas Mountain Laurel and once with a Texas Kidneywood. When confronted, they hid behind the botanical excuse that these are multi-trunked species. To be clear, what they actually sent me were entirely separate individual plants with independent root systems tangled together. Over time, independent root systems crammed into a tight space are guaranteed to compress, compete, and strangle each other out. Even if this is disputed, the site clearly represented the product as a single plant. I called them the day after the first order arrived, (the day the second arrived), to report the issue and was promised a callback. While waiting, I gently teased the root balls apart and carefully potted the separate seedlings individually to try and save them. The callback never came. The Mountain Laurels eventually died from the stress of being repotted. When I followed up, customer service told me they didn't believe me, blamed me for separating the tangled root balls, and refused a refund because I didn't provide pictures within 24 hours of arrival. I did eventually find that policy buried deep in their website, but I don't remember seeing it on the papers in the box as they represented it to be, (I actually dug a card out of the trash), and here's the kicker: they never mentioned that on my initial phone call. You'd think that would be important. (Unless they were waiting for their own ridiculously short recourse period to expire.) If there's a problem and you didn't photograph it within 24 hours: You're lying; no there wasn't. The individual I talked to essentially dared me to write a bad review. Personally, I hate seeing people act like they are unaccountable once they have your money. It might be a decent place to get native plants, and your experience might be very different as long as nothing goes wrong, but IMO, they don't deserve your business, and you can do much better. For instance, try EcoBlossom (ecoblossom.com). They are local, sell amazing natives, and as far as I know, aren't arrogant enough to think they can shaft the odd customer now and then. Best of luck if you do though; definitely "bring receipts". May the odds be ever in your favor.
