After a brewery excursion to the distant northern parts of Boulder, we found ourselves cold, hungry, and quickly approaching Covid curfew. One of the nearest places we could find open that had decent reviews and food we wanted to eat was Lefty's gourmet pizza. We found ourselves walking in here just a short drive later. They were due to close in about 45 minutes and it didn't look like table service was to be had. However, after asking nicely, the owner was only too glad to accommodate us, and a table was found for the three of us. While we were there, a couple other local people came in to pick up pizzas, but for the most part we had his full and undivided attention. I must say, it was one of the most entertaining dining experiences I have had in quite some time. Our discussion topics ranged from pizza making, to Astrophysics, to Kung Fu, to puns, and bad dad jokes. The pizza was excellent, and the total value experience with the owner was special indeed. We wound up ordering Craig's Cardiac Arrest. This is basically a meat lovers pizza with pepperoni, ham, sausage, and bacon. This was served on a nicely thin crust with a very zingy tomato sauce. This combo is not typically my favorite, as even though I really like dead animal protein on my pizza, I also like a little more variety and not just meat on meat on meat action. But, my two carnivorous dining companions wolfed this pie down in no time. I savored my two pieces and washed it all down with a frosty Mexican Coca-Cola. I will definitely be back should I find myself in the area. read more

This one hurts to write because I loved Lefty's and it's sad to see someone treat Craig's loyal customers the way they did. Shortly before Craig's passing we bought a new gift card, it was something he pushed during the pandemic as a way to support them when they were cash strapped. Whoever took over is not honoring them and made up some BS about that paperwork being locked away where no one can get to it. That's just false, the employees would write on the certificates. They are legally obligated to do this and they should take care of Craig's loyal customer base but they refuse. read more

So, I decided to give this pizza joint a try and nope.. can't say I wasn't disappointed. First glance I was a little hesitant because as you can see from the outside the lettering is falling off and such, plus it looks as though it could be someone's home. I wasn't sure where to park either so I parked across the street. Which, wasn't allowed but ‍. I ordered the Greek goddess 12' pizza. Prior to my arrival I browsed the menu online.. be aware there has been a price increase. It was so piping hot and fresh. I ordered for carry out. Pizza was great, I'd probably give 4 stars, but the expensive wings were so bad. Slimiest thing I've ever put in my mouth and I've gone down on some ogres. If you get takeout bake those wings for 10 mins a side and broil them for 5 a side after that. read more

Love Lefty's! We're from Texas, here for the Boulder 70.3 race, tomorrow (08/07/21), so we needed to "carb load", and Leftys is the real deal. Good food, reasonably priced, with musical entertainment in addition to the entertainment by the Owner Lefty, who was short staffed, but still managed to check on us frequently and share a few of his many stories. He's quite the character. The inside is small, but quaint, and there's plenty of room on the outdoor patio to enjoy the gorgeous weather. Small town charm. We will return. read more

We were looking for a cute little pizza place where we could bring our crew that included 10 kids under 12 and 6 adults. This place was such a gem! There was great little spot to sit outside with our big group and the waiters were so accommodating bringing our food out. There was even a little slide for the kids to play on. The pizza was absolutely delicious! We got breadsticks also, and they were good but not as good as the pizza. The wings were amazing! Large size and great sauce! Cooked well also! One of our pizzas came out with the cheese a little burnt looking, and I asked if that was normal. The two managers or owners immediately offered to make a new pizza and not only that, but he explained to me why the cheese looked that way because it wasn't aged properly and he had used it form that batch. He made another pizza that was perfect, and even made some cheese quesadillas for us to try the good batch of properly aged cheese- for free! We so appreciated his passion for his cooking and their willingness to make it right for us when our kids thought the cheese looked "too burnt", because in reality, it wasn't even burnt at all! I highly recommend this place and I'm grateful for the staff accommodating our group and putting up with all our kiddos running around!! read more

My wife and I found ourselves in the Niwot area after dropping our freshman son off at college (CSU). After having dinner down the street we were exploring the local shops and wanted some desert. We happened into Lefty's and ordered up some ice cream which was fantastic. Even better we ended up chatting with Lefty on the porch outside about a wide range of topics well past closing and after much of the staff when home. I had high hopes based on the great reviews, but I was totally let down. My boyfriend and I stayed at the inn next door to celebrate our birthdays and decided to order dinner from here. The pizza was nothing special, the ziti was okay, and the tiramisu and strawberry ice cream were ok. Well, actually the ice cream was weird and gross, it's hard to explain the texture it was SO strange. Like it was lumpy almost powdery. I have no clue what was in it to make it like that, but ya very disappointing birthday dinner. The Boulder area is filled with good pizza joints. This is one of the best. Their pizza is dee-licious; their calzones are huge and very tasty. Everything I've ever eaten here has been fantastic - including baked ziti, lasagna, and veggie subs. There's a comfortable seating area outside where you can enjoy warm weather and people watching. The owner, coincidently named Lefty, is a real character. Ask him about who discovered the rings of Neptune (not Saturn). It was him. Really, he used to be an astronomer. It's not *bad* pizza, but it's not particularly good pizza either. I'm from NJ and have my pizza biases. It's definitely a "Greek" pizza, in the sense of having a thicker crust than you expect, and the crust being pretty oily. I got a pepperoni, bacon, extra cheese medium pie. The bacon had a decent flavor, but it was more like bacon bits than actual bacon. The cheese wasn't tasteless, but it didn't really stand up on its own. The sauce is a bit acidic to my taste. I also ordered wings with the pizza, and they were extremely small, obviously cooked in an an oven, and not particularly tasty to boot. Their homemade wing sauce is a few steps less spicy than regular Frank's Red Hot. I guess if it's kinda bland, local food you're looking for, you're in the right place. read more

Lefty's doesn't deserve an average rating, because the fact is it's above average for its location (i.e., in Colorado) (i.e., IN FRIGGING NIWOT). Lefty's food is awesome, they are never closed, their owner is a really cool guy and their ice cream is amazing local goodness. I called in first time and this really sweet lady recommended different menu items. The second time I called in I got their owner who also recommended some items and then delivered them to my house where we had a 5 min convo about being local businesses and buying local as well. I bought a gift certificate which they keep there so I just have to call in and order I don't even need my wallet. This is local at its best. read more

We ordered 2 pizzas from Lefty's and 2 milkshakes and the bill was around 45 dollars. Lefty's forgot to put mushrooms on both pizzas. That's a lot of money to leave out my favorite ingredient. I called Lefty and he could not believe he left mushrooms off the pizzas and said that about 4 times. So, basically he called me a liar about 4 times. Not sure if people scam him all the time but I'm willing to buy 40 dollars worth of pizza and I'm not trying to get free pizza. Pizza was fine but I think I could have rated it higher if mushrooms were on it. Milkshakes were good. Lefty cooked my pizza. I stood at the counter, chatting and ordering my food, and he asked my name. I told him, and he said, "Guess who I am?" while pointing at his name on his shirt (sort of reminded me of my dad!). He continued to chat with us and all of his employees (his kids?) were just as friendly during our entire visit. Customer Service This whole restaurant is a good example of WYSIWYG. I thought they seemed really friendly - but when I overheard some of the phone calls for pizza orders, I realized it's not just a gimmick; customer service is truly what they believe it. I actually heard one guy say, "You're the customer, so we'll make it work," when he was on a call. Decor Rustic. Simple. Honest. Not necessarily first date material, but the shop is in the cute little downtown area of Niwot. I wished we had gone earlier to check out the shops. (But we did get in a 1 hour hike a few blocks away.) Food I couldn't decide. Luckily, I thought to ask: can you make it half and half? And of course, the answer was yes! I ordered 1/2 Thai chicken and 1/2 cheeseburger. Both were tasty, on a nice crust. My friend ordered a medium pepperoni and mushroom and finished 3/4 of it! I will definitely go back. I want to like this place because I live literally 3 minutes from it! I just can't. They offer 21 (21!!! Huh?) gourmet pizzas, but don't seem to have mastered the whole dough-sauce-cheese thing. Focus on making a good plain pizza before you go crazy, guys! A little pricey (Not one $, tbh) but it's Niwot so I get it. 2 main problems with this place, both easily fixed: 1. I kept hearing about lefty's pizza "you got to try it." Lefty's "the wow pizza" of Colorado. Lefty's bends over backwards to help your charities raise money. So I finally went. Boy do they under promise and over deliver. I have never seen so many topping and so many specialty pizzas. Then I looked at the menu and saw lasagna, wings, calzones and even ice cream and delivery to. Now, I get it. Only problem is I work to far away, that's probably a good thing I would get really lazy especially for lunch $1.50 slices how can they do that. I've got to agree with Tim B. For NY-style pizza in Boulder county, this place is hard to beat. Considering it is serving the little hamlet of Niwot and a few surrounding subdivisions in southern Longmont and Gunbarrel, you have to try this place if you like great pizza and you live near or visit Niwot. I have been a Lefty's customer for the past 7 years. I usually have it delivered (takes 30-60 minutes), but I have stopped in a few times for a slice and have never been disappointed. Ambiance? Well, it's a pizza joint, not a place to impress your first date. It is clean and the staff is friendly. Nearby Abo's also makes a decent pizza, but I prefer Lefty's. Lefty's traditional pizza is great-- the "regular" crust is fairly thin and has just the right NY style flavor and texture and the sauce is delicious. Although I've never tried them, other crusts are available such as "extra thin" for the lo-carbers, a gluten-free crust, and a deep dish crust. But who would ever want deep dish when you could have the perfect NY style crust? The toppings are fresh, and the cheese is high quality, not greasy. They have a variety of non-traditional "gourmet" pizzas that are also tasty. One that I really like is the Greek Goddess which has a lighter garlic & olive oil sauce along with spinach, feta, red peppers, and artichokes. Again, great on a thin crust. Their salads are inexpensive, fresh, and they are the perfect compliment to the pizzas. Pints of Boulder Ice Cream can be delivered as well, but I would usually rather have another slice than eat ice cream. Hey, I love pizza. read more

Went here with my dad several weeks ago when he was visiting from out of state. I live in Boulder, but really wanted to try this place because I read that the owner has a PhD in astrophysics. Since I'm a PhD student in organic chemistry, I love to be able support PhDs in non-traditional careers. Pizza: 3/5. I got a plain cheese pizza with regular crust and Dad got a Margherita. On mine, the cheese was a bit thick relative to the sauce and kinda rubbery, although that could've been a one-off. The sauce had a nice flavor, but I wish there was a little more of it. People tend to be particular about that sauce-to-cheese ratio, so if you don't like a lot of sauce, this may be for you. Next time, I'll probably ask for a little more sauce and see where that gets me. Crust was fine, but I wish I'd tried the deep dish. Its flavor was good, but I like my crust on the softer/doughier side. It wasn't overly crispy, though, and wasn't super thin, like a thin crust, but it was thinner than some places' regular crusts. I thought the margherita was good, although it was definitely different from the traditional wood fired margherita in that it appears to have the same crust as a regular. Also, if memory serves me, it had both the Buffalo mozzarella and shredded. Like a traditional margherita, it had a lot of sauce, which was good. All-in-all, I'd say the pizza is solid, above-average fare. Everything else: 5/5. Could tell Lefty was a character, although we definitely didn't have time to start a conversation with him about physics. What stood out the most to us, in this time of Covid, were two things: 1) the outdoor seating was plentiful and adequately spaced. Some of these restaurants have an interesting concept of 6 feet. If I'm 5'5" and change, and I could put my feet up on a chair at the next table, while sitting at my table, it's not 6 feet; 3 feet, max, *if* I'm more legs than torso. 2) We were not rushed, in any way. Granted, we came around 2 pm on a Tuesday, but still. During these times, it's super nice to find a place where you can have a meal AND a nice long conversation in a safe environment. This place has that welcoming small-town vibe to it, where it felt like we were welcome to stay as long as we'd like. So what's the verdict? Would I fly in from out of state just to eat this pizza? Nope. Would I drive from southeast Boulder just to get carry out? Probably not, although if I were on my way to or coming from Longmont and didn't want to wait on Rosalee's, I'd certainly make the detour. If I still lived in Gunbarrel, I'd also make the trip every now and then. And the ever-important grad student litmus test: if there was an event on campus that I wasn't particularly interested in, but there would be free pizza from Lefty's at said event, would I go for the pizza? You betcha! And yes, I have standards--e.g., I can't say the same for Domino's, and IMO, Cosmo's is only go if you don't have to stick around once you're done eating worthy. Is it worth making a special trip if you're looking for a place to eat that can provide an all-around good experience? Absolutely! read more

Leftys is great! I would highly recommend the calzones here. It's a small operation but they know what they're doing. Really has a mom and pop feel to it. It's really not expensive considering the massive amount of food your getting. If you are in boulder from out of town give this place a try you won't be disappointed. Best pizza in Boulder. We ordered several large pizzas and calzones. Never had anything as good, and our family eats lots of pizza. Even our kids said it is the best pizza they have ever had. Impressed with the friendliness of the owner and helpfulness of the staff. We did curbside pick up due to Covid restrictions and they came right out to our car and loaded the food in the trunk.
