Our electric cooktop and hood broke many months ago, and we thought that replacing it with a gas cooktop and new hood would be straightforward. It turns out that was not true. One plumber could install a gas line only, another plumber could install a gas line and the gas cooktop but not the hood, and an appliance installation technician could not install the cooktop because he could not cut into the existing granite top. So I found Max of MRI Construction and Remodeling on Yelp, and he said that he could do the work within that original scope -- cooktop, hood, and gas line -- but that we should anticipate a backup plan in case the granite cracked during installation. Because we plan to live in this house for as long as possible, we decided to go through a full kitchen renovation. We had a prior experience with another general contractor who was impossible to get a hold of and who could not ensure the quality of the subcontractors he hired, and interviewed another general contractor who gave us the impression that we would have to engage with suppliers and subcontractors more than seemed feasible. We are happy to say that we just finished our kitchen renovation last week! And it was finished a week earlier than scheduled. We are thankful to Max and his team of subcontractors! We are really happy with the final kitchen, given how much we cook at home. And surprisingly the process was easy despite its size and time of 6 weeks. Max has the strengths and qualities you want for your construction projects: he's incredibly responsive, honest and communicative, and willing and able to troubleshoot issues that come up, as they invariably do, both small and large. He makes recommendations if you ask and gives you options for decisions for which there are too many options. He works with an amazing group of subcontractors who are experts in their craft. There was an exception with one subcontractor but Max was able to get that course-corrected so that the project finished strong. I had MRI Construction remodel a kitchen and bathroom in a Condo that I own. I also needed to replace the front door, which was a complex job due to metal frame and fire resistant door. The kitchen was a complete replacement of floor, cabinets, counter, fluorescent light panel (to LEDs), and sink. In the bathroom we replaced everything but the floor tile. Max was able to provide a reasonable estimate for the project and start the project on a timeline that worked for me. This job was also complex because I don't live in the area and could only be there occasionally to review the work. MRI construction was helpful and communicative throughout the process, making sure that all of the tile, finishes, and accessories were ready to go. Ultimately the job was finished on budget and a week EARLY. I would definitely recommend Max and MRI for their honesty, quality of work, cost of work, and ability to do difficult jobs. After interviewing and receiving quotes from a number of contractors we chose to work with Max at MRI. His bid was in line with the scope of work and very detailed and importanly his management experience and the level of communication were important factors in our decision. Communication continued to be excellent and responsive. This was an extensive remodel including taking out old plaster popcorn ceilings and walls and completely redoing a galley kitchen and two bathrooms with updated plumbing, electrical, insulation and mechanical systems. I was especially impressed with the the highly skilled, conscientous and thorough subs for all of the critical trades especially drywall and painting, cabinetry, flooring and finish work, tile, electrical, plumbing plus personnel for some specialty work. The result was a satisfactory finished project and I would use MRI again for a project of this size. I am doing some final DIY on the project (locks, bathroom mirrors, etc) and hope to upload more pix later. Max was very helpful with some of the unforeseen issues, large and small that came along and was patient and flexible managing the trades schedules and also keeping us on task with selecting finishes and accessories. We began working with Max at MRI in early 2020, when we were looking to purchase a new home in the North Long Beach/Lakewood area. The home we were close to purchasing clearly needed some major updates, so I had MRI and two other companies come out to do an inspection and give me a quote for a few items we were hoping to get a buyer-credit on. I was immediately impressed with Max - his collaboration, professionalism, knowledge and friendliness. Many contractors are condescending, talk a big talk, and are rude. Max was the opposite and he was the obvious choice from the start. Max quickly turned around an initial estimate and only required a small deposit to set our start date in stone. He then had every single contractor come by to do a walkthrough one morning. I have NEVER had a contractor (and my family has been remodeling homes since I was young) do this before. They all came one morning, at the same time. It was so well-organized, and gave me a full picture of who I would be working with. It also allowed me to get to know each sub, which had a lasting impact throughout the project. We then started the demo a few weeks later, and the company he uses was phenomenal (plus eco friendly). Very thoughtful for a demo company, making sure they only removed what was needed, asking if they needed us to toss any additional items while the big truck was there. Cleaned up after themselves, the whole nine yards. I could go into detail about every leg of this project, but the main theme is that Max was honest with me the entire time, very fair about pricing, always kept his guys accountable, and made sure to check in and do walkthroughs with us at the right times. We ended up doing more than originally scoped, mainly because I knew I needed to do this house right if I wanted to live here for a long time. He was agile to our changes, never made us feel bad for our decisions, allowed us to have creative control, but also gave feedback as needed. Max ensured that the quality of work was of a very high standard and I am so pleased with all of the work each team put in. We had everyone here from painters, to drywallers, to tile guys, to plumbers, to electricians, to door and window installers, to flooring installers, and more. They were all great! Let me begin by saying this review is not a short review since this was not a small project. After receiving bids from six different contractors, we ended up with Max who was friendly, attentive to our needs and willing to work with us from design to Money. From the beginning we knew we had the right choice. His crew was friendly, very neat and organized which was a big deal to me. No concrete footprints all over, no broken bushes or dents in the existing house, no trash laying around. I can't tell you how important that was to my wife and I. We have a little kids who always said hi to the workers and especially Max who became part of the family after months of working closely with us. The construction started and progressed quickly. We had a six month ETA and it was completed a month early. This included all the stress of the coronavirus and two weeks of rain. Before during and after the project we inundated Max with questions and changes and city approval challenges. He was always professional, always got back to us within hours and when he said he would be there at 4:00, he showed up at exactly 4 o'clock. It became the big joke that we could set our clocks by the time that he arrived. When there was issues with an electrician or a painter or the inspector, Max never let it go without giving it his full attention. We were so comfortable that there were times we let him take over because he was so involved with the project. When you see the pictures, just know as simple as it appears, there was so much work and love put into this you can "feel "it when you walk into our home. Even when we got down to the details of design like grouting, moldings, handles, trim items, he worked with us the entire time. This review is long overdue....We were first timers in looking for a contractor to perform the work on our home. It was an extensive project (room addition and remodeling). So I did a ton of research and selected about 5 contractors to interview and provide estimates. It was a mix of large and small companies. What I immediately liked about MRI is that Max answers all his own calls. If you have any questions, you talk to or email him (the owner/president) directly. We selected him based on a number of factors including: his estimate came in a timely fashion, the estimate was color coded by trade and itemized (for such a large scale project, we appreciated that...no joke, one estimate we received from a different contractor came via a one line text message), his estimate was not the lowest, nor was is the highest, and he was the only one to spell my wife's name correctly---my wife has a different spelling of her name than what is typical, and this respect and attention to detail set Max apart from the others. Importantly though, Max was truly interested and excited about our project. Some of the other "bigger" guys we interviewed had so many other projects, it seemed like ours would not receive the proper attention. We were very happy to have selected him. Once the project started, he maintained all deadlines, progress dates, was in constant communication with us, replied within a short period of time to any questions, solved any and all problems with the city, inspectors, architect, etc... The guys he uses are all top notch, very respectful, use quality materials. This includes the framers, the plumbers, HVAC, flooring, cabinets/countertops, electrician, painters. Max answered all my questions without making me feel dumb. The project was always in sync with his estimated timeline. In fact, it finished about a month earlier than anticipated. He gets extra kudos for leading the project during the difficult times of the pandemic. All in all, we are beyond thrilled with Max and the outcome of our project. Our house was literally the talk of the neighborhood for the entire time it was under construction. And even now, more than 2 months after completion, we are still meeting neighbors we never knew who want to compliment the house (and they don't even know how great the inside looks!). Our remodeling job was not a small job. Let me begin by saying that my husband and I did our "homework" in trying to find a solid contractor. Our intention was not to sell; so we were wanted to invest in something that would come out nice for our family to stay in. We spent many hours interviewing and meeting with various contractors. I also was a bit concerned as I have never taken on a remodeling job ever; much less on this large of a scale. My husband and I are detailed individuals who appreciate promptness and good communication! We started our project in August 2019 - looking for a general contractor. Our project included demolition of existing garage, building 798 sq ft 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms home and rebuilding 405 sq ft garage with half bath. At first we started with 5 general contractors bidding on the project. Then we were down to 3 and finally down to 2 to choose from. Max was with us throughout this process. He was always prompt in our meetings and providing details of his bid. He made sure that all of our questions were answered. He provided us the scope of work with timelines throughout the project. So no need to look further and decided to sign the contract with Max. Demolition started late September 2019 and when October rolled in foundations were poured - framing began and so on. By mid-November we were sure that we were ahead of schedule (6 months for completion). Then the rain came - delayed our project by no more than a month. Then flu season (needless so say start of COVID-19) came but that did not stop the project. By beginning of February 2020 - the house and garage were complete. Just little touch ups and interior work to be completed. And finally by end of February final occupancy inspection was done. We moved in to our little abode in March before celebrating my birthday. What a wonderful gift from Max and his team!! Shortly after moving in - stay at home orders were enforced throughout the state due to COVID-19. I have to say that I am so grateful for the timeliness (actually quick completion of this project) since the wonderful workmanship of Max and his team gave my family the chance to enjoy our homes even more. Please note that this project is an additional dwelling unit in an existing property. We have so much space left that the kids are able to play and enjoy the sun while the adults enjoy barbecuing. Max was everything we were looking for in a general contractor when we remodeled our 1-bedroom condo: professional, responsive, fairly priced, and understanding of our needs. We met with four contractors to discuss our project and Max stood out for his attention to detail. Our remodel consisted of refinishing kitchen and bathroom cabinets, installing new countertops, installing new tub and tile surround, installing plumbing fixtures and hardware (doorknobs, handles, pulls, etc.) throughout, new flooring and baseboards, and paint throughout. Max showed his true character in the timeline he put together for our project. At the time, I was six months pregnant so my husband and I planned a babymoon getaway while the remodel was being completed. Max made it a point to have our place move-in ready upon our return, even though that involved pushing his crew and finishing the project a couple days earlier than it normally would take. Being able to come back from our trip to a "brand new" home instead of staying in a hotel a few more nights meant a lot. The work itself was high quality and we've received countless compliments, from friends as well as from a property management company that recently came to look at our place in preparation for renting it out (the property manager specifically said, "you can tell he knows what he's doing!") As expected on a project with so many pieces, there were a few minor tweaks and adjustments to be made at the end. Max made it a point to make sure we were 100% satisfied with every piece of work, returning to personally make small adjustments such as a door that was sticking a little when it closed. Max and his company are legit! We have been doing business with them for over a year now and I have personally seen the quality in their craftsmanship and their attention to detail. I am a contractor myself with a 5 Star business here on Yelp as well as a 6 time recipient of the Angie's List Super Service Award. I mention this to highlight how high my own standards are. That being said, I trust Max and his team to work for my clients as well as in my own home. Lastly, If you are a low-baller looking for a dirt cheap contractor, look elsewhere. I contacted Max to update my laundry area, replace all interior doors, custom closets, flooring and quite a few other odd ends around my house. 1. He is responsive and does not make promises he cannot keep. 2. He listened to each concern and request I had. We reviewed many options and what I felt would work best for my house. He was great by offering suggestions and letting me know what would work best for the issues I had prior to him fixing my long to do list. 3. Bathroom Remodel. After getting burned by other contractors in the past, I was given a referral to call Max. After speaking with him my wife and I felt that we were in good hands and we proceeded with our bathroom remodel. We were very impressed with all the subcontractors he used. They were very professional and cleaned up all work areas before they left. What was nice was they took all there trash with them and not stuffing are trash cans full. Big plus.! I had extensive discussions with the owner of MRI, Max, regarding my project. Max reviewed my drawings and photographs, along with my detailed description. We discussed the details of the project a few times. Thereafter, Max provided me with a firm price to perform the work. This was not a rough estimate, subject to revision. Rather, it was a firm price. We also agreed on a start date. In reliance on Max's price and agreed start date, I ordered and paid for over $5,000 in materials for the project. Then, after I ordered and paid for the materials, Max called me and nearly doubled his price. He blamed it on higher pricing from his sub-contractors. His new price was significantly higher then any other estimate I received for the project. Given that I had already ordered the materials, I had to hurriedly hire a replacement contractor. Fortunately, the replacement contractor did a great job and charged essentially the same as Max's original price (before he almost doubled it). Nevertheless, Max's conduct was inexcusable. Customers rely on pricing provided by contractors to make important decision about their projects, including whether and when to proceed. Max incorrectly assumed that, once I ordered and paid for the materials, I would be forced to pay his increased price. Wrong!
