I got a Mother's Day gift from my husband (and kids) for a Facial, since well, I haven't had one since before my second daughter was born, which puts me at almost 5 years. My husband knew that I have sensitive skin and do not do well with any other products other than Aveda...so he chose this place and I'm glad he did! She offered me a beverage to relax my mind and I chose tea, which was delicious, by the way! Then she led me on a tour of the place, it was stunning with a peaceful garden, stones, and relaxing area all around. I really felt at peace with our planet Earth here. There's something to be said about bringing us back to love nature. I was then led to my room with such a calming scent and lighting. Brittany gave me a foot bath and massage of a lifetime! Brittany asked what I was comfortable with and what I wasn't. She made sure that I was comfortable every step of the way. Then she left the room while I got ready for my facial and massage. The facial and massage was so relaxing, I fell asleep and left there feeling so relaxed and calm. I will definitely be back here, this place is stunning and amazing! I considered myself a loyal customer for almost 3 years here. Never had any complaints. Until recently, I got my hair done and asked for just the front highlighted and a cut. I spent $190 for maybe 2 inches of my hair to be highlighted. Sounds obscene, right? Now, I was aware of this price upfront and chose to go this path because my hairstylist convinced me that she would highlight it in a way that as it grew out, there wouldn't be such a contrast from my roots and the rest of my hair. So I trusted her and went with it. Two weeks later, I notice that as my roots are growing in, there's a major contrast. Also, the highlights look chunky on one side. I called the salon and explained the situation. They asked me to send a picture of my hair (and I did), but the owner was pretty adamant from the start that they would not refund me nor do another highlight even at a reduced price. Her reasoning was that it had been too long since my last highlight. I explained that the stylist ensured that it would grow out with very minimal contrast to the rest of my hair, so why would I call only a week after my appointment when my hair hasn't started to grow out? Please keep in mind that I'm not looking to get a free highlight. Again, 3 years with this business and I've never once asked to correct my hair because I was unhappy with it. Also, I get my hair highlighted only twice a year because I don't want to damage my hair that much. So again, I'm not looking to come in and get another highlight. All I asked was for a partial refund, but they could not grant me that. It makes sense for me to pay for the haircut because I was happy with it, but it does not make sense to pay full price for the highlight. The salon is beautiful, I'll give it that. But I'm not spending a ton of money for ambiance. I'm just looking for a good highlight and haircut at a reasonable price. Also, as someone who has given thousands of dollars towards this business, I would've expected some respect towards a loyal customer. Instead, I was accused of trying to get a free highlight since it was 2 weeks later. I'll continue to use Aveda products, but I won't be going back to this salon. read more

This place has such an amazingly positive and peaceful energy. My family and I have been going here for years, and we absolutely love it! Tiffany is an amazing hair stylist who always makes my mom come home smiling like crazy so happy and her hair always looks magnificent. I am always impressed by how Tiffany colors my moms hair! It's the most beautiful I've ever seen it always. I've seen my mom try many hair stylist before meeting Tiffany and she was never happy with her hair before going to Tiffany! I've been to Tiffany a few times for a temporary wash out color, as well as a gloss treatment and a cut and she did a wonderful job. She gives honest advice and opinions and does a great job explaining everything. I haven't trusted anyone else with my hair in a long time. I don't write reviews very often, but my appointment at this Salon was one to remember, not in a good way. My hairdresser Lisa, looked at my hair and suggested highlighting only on the upper part of my hair from the root to 2 inches and warned me that we could not do the highlights on the lengths. I never heard in my life anything like that. I started getting the feeling that she was not interested at all in doing my hair. When I decided not to do the highlight as I had a bad feeling about letting her do it. I wondered if she could do a haircut and color the roots, and this is when I realized that she did not want to do anything on my hair that day. Her lack of interest was shocking. I am new to this Salon, and this is the first time that a hairdresser showed so little interest in helping me. Extremely disappointing! And so shocking! I left the Salon, wasting 2 hours of my time in the Salon and traffic for nothing, and felt disrespected. I've been lucky enough to go to Tara Thomas at Lemongrass for a year and a half since moving to San Diego. She does an amazing job on my highlights and haircuts! This last visit I went from brunet to having the most beautiful blond highlights, just what I had wanted! The variation and dimension in the highlights she put in are stunning, I couldn't be happier with the end result. The salon is adorable and gives off the best vibe, very boho beautiful = ) It's so nice to have the option to sit outside or in the cabana area and hear the water fountains and birds singing while my hair process. She accomplishes in one session what most therapists take weeks to do in terms of "loosening me up". I swear she has magic in her fingers! My hair is ruined.... I've never had the desire to wear a hat, but I'm hiding my hair for the next few months until it grows out enough to be fixed and NOT get even shorter. I'm writing this review in hopes to have the stylists be more sensitive. I had said, "two inches off and clean up the layers". Ladies, when we come in, we usually don't know the verbiage for what we want. However, I feel like there is a HUGE difference between, "I like it, just spruce me up" and "I'm going through life crises, and the only thing I can change is my hair, so change it!" The process we discussed was not foreign to me. Debunking, face framing, and under layers are all familiar. After 26 years of struggling with my hair, I understand these things are needed. Instead, I got a 100% razor cut. No strategic layers (I have curly, thick hair), no making sure everything was even. It happened so fast, that before I could say stop, I knew to make it even I had to suffer through it. Half of my hair is just gone, "debulked". I felt like I was in a cartoon watching the hair fly, but instead of looking gorgeous I wanted to cry. My top layer was past my collar bone in the front... it's now even with my cheek bones. I lost 12 inches in some places, and everything else is at least 6 inches shorter. And not cleanly 6 inches shorter... razor cut shorter, so who knows what the back looks like. She didn't show me. She offered to curl my already curly hair, because it's now so short it won't curl. Watching her do "finishing touches" killed me, because it was more hair gone, and I knew there wasn't enough to hide mistakes, and her face was sinking too. I had so much hair, my normal stylist could cut out knots, laugh, and say no one would ever know, and I'd laugh too because I love my thick, curly, mane. Cutting out knots is the best... I have no such thickness left. I now feel like a bird. Not a lion, an ostrich hiding her head in a hole. Half way through, she said, "I always forget to take before pictures"... I went from, "two inches and clean up the layers" to an Instagram "success story" for a portfolio. She insulted my stylist with offhand comments, and finishing up with a, "That's how curly hair should be cut".... I can no longer tie my hair up in a clean pony tail, and I need to for work. I went from mid-back length, to just past my shoulders. I feel like a dirty, used, mannequin head experiment that went very, very wrong. I've NEVER had someone completely change the nature of my hair, and fight to make it something it isn't before. I've had bad cuts, but nothing like this... most stylists respect my hair, because it is unique, and challenging, but so beautiful. It hides mistakes when you treat it well. If they don't know what to do, they ask questions, and stay conservative. I am NOT newly single, I did not want something different, and I got something so awful I've cried several times. Please, stylists... never do this to people. I go to Aveda salons because I trust them, and the people tend to be knowledgeable. This is frightening. I should have just gone to Sam's. The only reason this salon gets two stars, is because I love what the owner is doing. All the girls were talking about how well they are treated, how happy they are, and they don't need tips to get by. Thank you so much, owner of this salon, for being an amazing business owner and realizing that the quality of life for your workers reflects on the customers. I would come back, just to continue supporting this cause, if I wasn't so deeply traumatized... We'll see. Was this laid on thick? Yes... I've given myself 24 hours to cry, and mope, and talk about what happened as dramatically as it truly feels. It will grow back... but it took 10 years with my stylist to correct all the bad cuts that have happened prior... Hopefully 4 months will let it grow out enough to be fixed without losing too much more length. Razor cuts last all of 2 weeks on my hair though, so it's going to continue to be miserable the whole time. My hair is truly ruined. read more

I've been there 4 times, and each time it got worse. In my last visit, the stylist did not wash my hair. Spent just under 20 minutes cutting my hair, and I was charged a full price of $80 for what it should have been 1 hour appointment. Needless to say, the quality of the cut was AWEFUL. The stylist left 2 curtain looking layers all around the head for what it was supposed to be a multi-layered, tapered, feathered cut. I asked the owner why I was charged a full price for a 20-minute appointment, and she said "We are doing what we need to do to survive." I said "So what you mean is, by offering a shorter appointment and a less quality experience, you are essentially increasing your price drastically without telling your clients. That's basically going from $1.33 per minute to $4 per minute." And to my astonishment, she said "Yes, everyone is doing it. We have to survive." Dishonesty is their best policy. The cut was so bad I had wait for a few more months to go somewhere else to get it fixed. read more

The young woman at the front desk staff was genuinely interested in my being there, the complimentary hot tea was tasty (and caffeine free!), and I really felt so loved and cared for. The hour and a half facial started with a warm foot wash, with Marion and I chatting to get to know each other. Once the facial began, the service was quiet and very calming. The aromatherapeutic scents and oils were amazing, and the hot towels OH MY WORD. Chills everywhere! You can tell the Lemongrass team love what they do, and where they do it. Making people feel good in the paradise of Encinitas? Living the dream.... and you should too! So good that I booked a haircut to come back the next day. Beautiful space with nature and gem stones, Aveda products that don't test on animals, and it's a gratuity-free spa. But still, I will never go back. I had a terrible leg wax recently. By the time I drove home my legs had collected tons of dirt and debris because she didn't properly wipe off excess wax. It took me about 30 minutes to scrub everything off. Also there were 2 sections of my leg that she completely missed (like 2"x 2" per section.) There was no convenient time for me to return for her to fix it (because of both my schedule and hers) so I wound up just shaving. Not so recently I had a haircut done with the "dry" technique. So they cut it before washing it and it's dry. It didn't turn out well for me or my friend. Perhaps there's merit to it on some level. But if you don't want a dry haircut, make sure you tell them when you book it. Some of the staff only do dry cuts. read more

I loved the charm of this small hipster salon, but I hate to say the person who did my hair was HORRIBLE. Alysha I believe was her name, and immediately I was upset because she kept her mask below her nose the entire time she was working, walking about the salon. Never was her mask covering her nose! Then, since I'm new to town, I brought my previous Aveda stylists formula for my hair color with me. My stylist from my home town is a master stylist and has been coloring hair for over 15 years. Alysha right away tells me this formula is all wrong for me and will never cover my grey roots. I had to debate this with her for 5 minutes before she relented to follow the formula I'd brought from my old stylist. At this point I asked her how long she's been doing hair and she replied about 2 years. My discomfort grew. Taken to the shampoo chairs (lovely area by the way outside with spa music playing and the best comfy chairs) but again this experience is ruined by Alysha shampooing my hair and exclaiming "oh my god your hair is all falling out". I FREAKED OUT! I do have thinning hair (menapause and genetic family traits) and yes some hair falls out with each shampoo, but she made me feel like I'd just lost chunks and chunks of hair. She then spent maybe 2 minutes cutting my hair, which looks uneven and the she butchered my bangs. Worst cut and color experience of my life! Wish I could say good things because I thought the salon was super cute and charming, but this was a horrible experience that left me shaking on the drive home. I'm surprised I have not written a review on this place along time ago! I have been coming to this spa for a little over a year now and I have always worked with the esthetician Lindsay for facials and massages. Lindsay is very a knowledgeable esthetician and has helped with the right products to help reduce breakouts and inflammation with also preventing it from getting worse. And also, don't underestimate her petite figure! She's very strong and is an outstanding masseuse! Haha. Other than the great work from Lindsay, the spa is very friendly and welcoming. They always offer something to drink while you wait and the whole place is beautiful and relaxing. With lots of great products to buy, calming music, endless refills of tea.. I wouldn't mind just coming here to spend time in the back yard and meditate in my off time! Haha. I wrote a review in October and saw it actually posted and now it's gone. As you probably guessed, it wasn't a favorable review. Below, is what I wrote i sent in on their site. My concerns are : 1) there are an unusual number of "botched" hair color jobs noted in the reviews and mine was one of them 2) when they botch, the stylist who botched the job is not held accountable to fix it. 3) i was misled about what could be done about my color. I am unhappy at the way i was treated at Lemongrass especially after so many years of patronage which consisted of my entire family and the dozens that i have referred there. After a botched color job which was the first ever for me, Sarah called me in to tell me she didnt want to fix it and that we couldn't communicate anymore (even though we had communicated for years no problem). I was shocked as i've never heard of anyone "firing" a client with a botched job. Sarah had always been so polite, i was dumbfounded that she would change on a dime like that. The weirder thing is that Sarah had been telling me all along that my hair could not be made any blonder and i believed her. But i knew that in the past, my hair had been much lighter and that even Sarah had made it really light the year before. Sarah finally confessed to me that she did not wish to do the really blond style on me and that she was not accepting accountability to fix the botch job herself. She said there were certain things she would not do (I still don't know what that means). If she had been communicating from the beginning, she would have communicated her preferences up front and not misled me into believing that my hair COULD NOT be blonder. I have since gone to another Aveda spa and they made my hair MUCH blonder than it has ever been and i am very happy- except for the brassy tones that Sarah put in my hair ugh! They also confirmed that the brassy tones don't mesh with the natural tones in my hair nor my face color. My gut had been right all along and Sarah was not only not communicating her boundaries but was misleading me on how blond my hair could get. I was there before Sarah, and i have watched her grow there but i had no idea that she would so readily opt out and actually "fire" a client with botched hair without at least fixing it first. And to call me all the way in to simply "fire" me, was a huge waste of my time and quite a humiliating experience. I don't think i've ever been so humiliated in my life. Sarah had fixed my daughter's hair given the exact same predicament but somehow now, she isn't accountable to fix mine and blamed "our" communication rather than assuming responsibility for HER (absent and misleading) communication. I know you are all very fond of Sarah, and i was too! She was always a delight and now this? i am absolutely befuddled. It's almost as if once a stylist acclaims star level status, she can do no wrong. I'll never forget how rude Ashley was on the way out too. It's upsetting to me as a customer who has supported you for so long and very much enjoy my fellow Dutch owners that you would risk losing good customers in favor of a shooting star that may not stay with you for as long as customers do. I do wish you the best and hope that you can find a way to encourage better communication rather than sudden "firings" that leave people with a sad head of hair and in a state of shock. read more
