Orderd a snowblower online. Went to pick it up to find out they didn't have what showed in inventory. Strike one. There were two sales associates that were standing there when I walked in to pick up my preorder. The lady must have been the Manager and she had the same machine but an earlier model which she cut me a deal on. I asked about needing oil for the blower and she claimed this brand didn't come with oil and so I asked them to add what was needed to my order. She asked the older gentleman to confirm what oil and he assured me it was two-stroke so we added that to my order. Got home and the day I needed to run the unit I read the manual and checked to see if the machine e had oil. It DID have oil and if needed it would have been 5W-30. Had I listened to the associates I would have put too much oil and wrong kind. I don't recommend this ACE read more

Ordered a drill bit online that was in stock for 15 minute pickup. After 2 hours I called to see if they received the order and was told it was out of stock and will be on their next shipment on Friday (six days from today). I said I wanted to cancel the order and was told I needed to do it online. I tried to cancel it online and was told via text box message to call the store. I called the store and no one answered after multiple attempts. Customer service is definitely not this Ace Hardware's priority! read more

Not understanding what happened to this store. This is my neighborhood store and is convenient with decent inventory and a good loyalty program. I have been going there for years but this is not worth my time anymore sadly I will now drive to a different Ace hardware or simply go to Home Depot or Lowe's. What is killing the store is the employees. They seem to be the most disgruntled unfriendly employees I have ever seen and should not be in the service business. This store really needs to retrain their staff or just change them. A simple smile and a bit of help would go a long way in turning this store around. read more

They've provided certain items, while other times I've been out of luck. This ACE is the closest to my house, but I always have to go to the Arlington Heights or Palatine stores to get the specific HVAC air filter size that I need. Oddly enough they did the exact stand-alone shower face plate that I needed, which wasn't stocked at the Long Grove Menards. I was slightly disappointed in the deceptive packaging though; they said it's a chrome finish, but it was really a plastic plate with a chrome covering. Not a deal breaker though, but I had hoped for a rigid metallic piece. I do appreciate the old fashioned feel of this place, as well as the quick check out process. I've been a life-long Ace patron and was excited to find an Ace close to my new home in Buffalo Grove. That excitement didn't last long after patronizing this Ace. I understand that good employees are hard to come by, but I've seldom experienced customer service worse than this location has to offer. Because of the proximity to my house, begrudgingly I have been here probably 10 times and I dread my visits. Last night, the employee checking me out tried to overcharge me by about $20. When I caught it, they tried to argue with me until another employee stepped in and found the error. As soon as my transaction was approved, the employee pulled out his phone, no 'would you like a bag' or 'have a nice day'. The paint counter gentleman is just as unfriendly. I recommend shopping elsewhere and I will too as soon as I get my bearings straight from my recent cross-country move. read more

That when you need help. There is always 3 or 4 people standing around talking. And when you ask for help they don't move. They just tell what aisle to go to. The other ace hardwares always walk to the product. No customer service at all. Maybe they need more training or a new manager. The hardware store that was there before was much better. read more

Love me some small-town stores. I know Ace is a "chain", but you usually find them in smaller towns and they function like more of a family than the big-box stores like Home Depot or Lowes, etc.. While they may not carry quite as much, i love that you get personalized, friendly help here from what seem like knowledgeable people. I've come here a couple times and didnt need anything too crazy. Employees seemed helpful. I had a question about re-screening a screen window. I didnt even realize this was a thing until my Mom told me, so asked a couple questions. They're doing good with Covid and trying to be conscientous with spacing and what-not. If you need something fairly basic, I say definitely give Ace a try. Give them some local support. read more

I recently had the experience of calling this Ace Hardware to check whether they carried a specific size nut. The first call was answered by an associate who, when I asked, said he wouldn't be able to help because he didn't know anything about nuts and my call was cut off. Tried calling back again, and every extension tried was busy and I kept getting put back into the opening announcement. Called back a 3rd time and was connected with James who told me that he couldn't check for the size nut I needed and I should come in and check myself. I explained that would entail a 25 minute drive from my home there and back. I am older consumer which plenty of customer service exposure and I have to say this is the worse I have ever encountered. Really nice people here! I was plumbing my first bathroom and needed a few extra trips to figure things out. Each trip was delightful. Even the 3rd trip... I had cut myself on the job and didn't have any Band-Aids. The cashier pointed out a very adorable little first aid kit by the counter. I performed a little self-surgery in their bathroom (which they were kind enough to let me use for the operation). Their return and exchange process was super easy too. I don't know when I'll be back to Buffalo Grove, but I would recommend this place to anyone needing to suture a cut or any other DIY needs. read more

I have been coming to this location for 40+ years as it changed hands through diff owners and brand (True Value & Ace Hdw). The most recent transition transformed it into into a shell... no, an EMPTY HUSK of what it once was. Their shelves are inconsistently stocked, and the employees on the floor lack knowledge about the products they carry. There used to be an employee, Tom, who lasted through the various iterations of the store, and was the go-to guy to get an accurate answer to a product question or product suggestion to solve a repair. He retired. I make it a point to support local, small businesses. But lack of service, products and knowledge make it real hard for me to give them my money. read more

To make a long story short. The cashier charged me 165 dollars for to herb plants that should have been 50% off and on Perennial that was 7.99 on sale for 20% off. The total purchase should have been around 15 dollars. I have been out the money for 3 days so far. I had to file a dispute with my bank and I had an employee in the store today call me back to tell me there was nothing he could do if I didn't come back to the store again with my refund receipt because he couldn't find the transaction because I put in my husbands phone number for the rewards, when I got a little upset and questioned why me putting in my husbands phone number would have anything to do with my return since it was charged on my debit card. He hung up on me. I would call back and he would hang up the phone on me again over and over. I wanted to speak to another employee to let them know this guy kept hanging up the phone on me but he wouldn't listen just kept hanging up the phone. Then it went to a message system that said " your party is not available" and would automatically hang up. I'm caught in the middle because the bank says they have not received the transaction and Mutual Ace hardware in Buffalo Grove said it's the bank's fault and I'm still out 165 dollars. I will never shop at Ace ever again. Their systems seem very outdated. And need to improve on the customer service! They offered me nothing for the inconvenience. I don't know when I will see the money back in my account. I'm thinking that if she charged me 1000 dollars I'd still be SOL!! If she accidentally charged me 5000 dollars I'd still be out of the money with Ace being like oh well not our problem..... I guess I should be grateful it was only 165. Yeah... read more

I am so happy I decided to stop in to buy some sidewalk salt a few weeks ago! I was greeted with such a warm welcome from all of your employees, and then Tom noticed that I was eyeing the Weber grills for my husband. He came over to see if I had any questions, and was patient in telling me about the perks of each grill. He told me the sale price, and I left with a quote for the make and model I liked best in my hand. Once I convinced my husband that we needed the grill, I went back to purchase it, and Tom and Cheryl both went above and beyond to make sure I got the grill we wanted and I was happy with my purchase! It was delivered SO quickly (Thank you to John "Krez" who did such an amazing job getting it onto our back deck!) We are super excited to be able to make New Year's steaks on our new Weber! I have been coming to this store for years and have had nothing but good service until today. I needed to have a couple of key blanks cut for a vehicle. The person behind the counter refused to provide the service, regardless of my offer to pay because I brought with me preprogrammed blanks for a specific vehicle. What an incredible customer service: this past week I brought an old car key with security chip and door remote. I wasn't 100% sure my car would qualify for a replacement/recut, but these guys worked so hard to make this happen. At one point I had four different gentleman working on this I was ready to give up but they weren't and I'm so glad they persevered because they got it working and was under $25. I thought Ace was the place with the helpful hardware folks but the guy at the paint counter was grumpy and the opposite of helpful. I came to get a lock re-keyed and he told me they couldn't do that now and could only do that "later", then turned back to what he was doing. I asked if later was like 5 minutes later or like an hour later and he just said I had to come back later. Not wishing to go home, come back "later" and find out they still couldn't do it, I asked if I needed an appointment. The guy was clearly irritated and rude and said the only person who could do it wasn't working now...so...when will he be working? This is just not helpful! Not sure why it's necessary to be grouchy and completely unhelpful but I don't think I'll visit this store again. read more

I came here by mistake (I had a True Value coupon-OOOPS). I was going nuts trying to find what I needed which was a copper pan. A guy named Steve immediately saw I needed help so he took me in the right area. When we couldn't find the item, Steve suggested I talk to Tom. Tom looked up stuff in the computer and hooked me up the brand they carry (which I think is better) and he was awesome. He even told me he has the pan at home and gave me cooking instruction!! What?? This is incredible! Customer service is not dead - it thrives at Len's Ace Hardware. I don't live nearby but I will DEFINITELY shop here again. My wife and i went shopping there to purchase a few plants and get some pricing on some other things. The cashier over charged us by $150.00 She literally rung up 20 of a plant that we only had one of. When we went back to get it corrected the manager did a refund instead of a void. That meant that the money from our checking account was gone and we had to wait several business days to get it back. When we called to get this fixed one of the cashiers kept hanging up on my wife. He had the nerve to tell her that her personal financial problem are of no concern to him! Who says that to a customer??? When she did finally get to a manager he said there was nothing he could do and that he would talk to the employee. That employee needs to be fired. Why would a business want someone like that representing their brand??? I rarely shop at ACE because the prices aren't all that great unless something is on sale. She tried to put items into the smallest bag I have ever seen. Items stuck out of bag. I asked for a bigger bag so items do not stick out. Cashier smartalicky asked if the 2nd bag was big enough otherwise she could put in a bag with handles. I stated I do not need her smart remark. This woman should not be a cashier. She should get off her butt and actually take care of customer. The people who actually work there are excellent but the cashier ruins your experience in the store. I went to the store to buy plants. They had at least 6 signs saying shrubs and perennials were 20% off. I bought several perennials but was not giving the discount. I was told this did not apply to fall plants. Their signs did not Indicate that. I hope they take down their signs or clarify because it was misleading. I have been to this store in the past and always found the staff helpful. I have a spinal cord injury and walk with a cane and a noticeable limp. I walked into the store because I needed an extension cord. I stood there for a minute, acclimating myself to the store. After 3 minutes, no one asked me if I needed help so I went down the aisle that was marked "electrical." There were only light bulbs down that aisle. As my endurance is less than ideal I walked over to the paint counter which was the closest area with employees. There was a younger man and an older man behind tge countet. I asked for what I needed and the younger man (who was sitting) rudely said "you're not going to find that." Then said "it's only 2 or 3 aisles down." The older gentlemen took me to the aisle and helped me find what I needed. He was very kind. The way that he spoke to me was unacceptable. I get that some people don't feel like they need to help others who have physical challenges but there is no room for that in retail. I do really appreciate that the older of tge two, who was standing and working, was willing to help me. I don't know what the younger man's problem was but I don't think it needed to become my problem. Shopping small is supposed to be a better experience. read more

I was looking for items I couldn't find,but she took me to another location that I would never have gone. She suggested other thing that might work. She knew all the inventory in this store. Lauren did suggestive selling like I've never seen before. Her abilities is everyone needs in retail sales today. If lLens trains his people like Lauren which l think he does he has a winner. I can't say enough about her, she's wonderful. I did purchase things I didn't come for,of course that's what we want! This young lady is a gem. Lauren will have my business all the time. I would highly recommend Len's Ace Hardware. We have lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years and have always been greeted with a helpful smile. Tom was exceptionally great to work with - he went above and beyond! We had an issue with our snow blower and Tom was going to offer his personal snow blower to help us out with the terrible storms we were having while they investigated our situation. I have been waiting to get the Clark and Kensington paint I need to finish my house with for at least six weeks. Very Helpful! I was refurbishing a bicycle pedal from an old (1975) Raleigh racing bike & unfortunately lost the retaining hex nut & was unable to reassemble it. I couldn't find anything I had that fit, went to a local bike shop that does repairs, surprisingly, they weren't able to help. A neighbor suggested 'Try Ace Hardware in Buffalo Grove, they're very helpful'. To my surprise one of their employees spent a good 20 min & we finally found the right size & thread to fit & I was back in business, reassembled the pedal & good to go. I felt this was outstanding service for a part that only cost $0.65. It's the kind of service that was common in the 'old days' when I was a kid growing up, but rarely seen anymore. Now some would say, gee, that's a waste of their time for a part that only cost 65 cents, but they've earned a lot of respect from me & I will definitely return when I need a part or help with anything. I have been going to this Ace Hardware for years because I live in a large subdivision right behind the store. When they converted to Ace Hardware from True Value they added tons of extra stuff such as clothing, and different products. HERE IS THE PROBLEM: The last five times I have gone in there, they don't have what the online inventory says they have. It amazes me how they can say something is in stock only to get there and it isn't. Don't you people do inventory? Home Depot and Menard's are close by. I'm through being disappointed and hearing "We should have it, I can order you one". Sell less items and keep things in stock. You're not a department store. You're a hardware store. I have to say I'm usually all for supporting smaller businesses even if they are chains. Well I have to say that lately the customer service in here has been horrible. It wasn't until recently that I have decided not to shop there anymore. I went in a few nights ago to buy two new Carhartt coats for me and my employee. Walked by 4 associates and not one of them asked me if I needed help. I go to the back of the store where the coats are located. Spend about 10 minutes trying thing on making sure I was getting the right sizes. Again no one walked up once to see if I had needed help. Oh wait it gets better. At check out the lady seems to get upset with me because the price on their tag came up 10 dollars cheaper then the price on the register. Then she pulls the nice new hangers out of the coats that say Carhartt on them. Not sure if they were supposed to come with them or not so I'm not really upset about that. But what iced the cake was not even offering me a bag. Man I just spent 253 dollars in your store and your not even going to give me a bag to keep my brand new coats clean until I get home. I'm okay with one star for carrying the brand but customer service in this store gets a zero. I highly doubt I'll ever go back which is sad since I been going there since I was a kid. read more

Today, I was there to repair a leaky faucet. Tom gave me a tutorial on exactly what I needed to do. And he gave me the confidence to try the repair on my own. I was able to fix the faucet myself!
