The Store has everything. The people who work there are eager to help. It's my favorite store.

Millens has gotten even better over the past year or so. I used to go there only when I needed things immediately. Now it's my first stop. Saves me tons of time. Their sump pump parts and plumbing sections are great. They've rekeyed my locks before. Some of the sales assistants know more than others but at least one of them always has the answer. Plus, if I just want to know where to find something and I don't ask for any opinions, they leave me alone. Perfect!!! The prices are fair and well worth it because time is money. read more

Came in for (long shot) a knob to replace one that broke in an old refrigerator. Brought the old knob and a picture of the post it mounts on, and the guy who helped me opened up some old bin of miscellaneous knobs in there and... one of them worked! I'd hit up Home Depot earlier in the day and they just uselessly told me to "search online". Millen is the hardware store you need. read more

While not as large as the mega stores these folks have what you need or you don't really need it. Unlike the Mega stores they have a plethora of superb staff who know what's in the store and the solution to your problem. OMG, staff to help you answer your questions and find the solutions. If they cannot, they gladly direct you to a store which likely can and at the best price. They provide curbside pick up if requested. I have never been disappointed. These guys are superb. read more

It's hard to find stuff here, because they have so much packed in to a relatively (by Home Depot standards) small space. So thank goodness they have the nicest staff, who will escort you around the store with a joke and a smile, offering their two cents about your repair job if you ask. Great customer service. I started going to Millen in 1982 when I moved to Wilmette and renovated this old house. Been going there ever since. Never had a bad experience but lots of good ones. Store looks small outside, but large inside. Staff is competent and helpful. Sometimes, rarely, you may have to be a bit patient when they are busy, but never long before someone is available. You will actually be approached and asked if you need help if you look lost trying to find something. By now I know all the guys on a first name basis, they been there for years. Oh...and doggies usually get treats if Fred sees you. In fact, the owner gives out treats also. He took over the store when his dad retired. Their guys know what homeowners need and the problems these old, Victorian Wilmette homes have. The products Millen carry are good quality; if you have a problem they will take it back for credit or exchange. These kind of stores are disappearing in America; Wilmette is fortunate to still have one. read more

Having lived in Wilmette for a while now, I can't believe I haven't written a review of Millen Hardware. It's a local institution. There are plenty of good reviews here (I'm honestly shocked by the negative ones), so I'll just throw in a few very specific things: 1. If you're a Dr. Who fan, this place is a Tardis. (If you don't know that show-- this store looks small on the outside and goes on f-o-r-e-v-e-r on the inside and they have every product imaginable.) I have, on occasion, assumed they wouldn't have something only to discover they did. 2. The service is remarkable. You can't wander in there for more than a couple minutes before someone asks, very sincerely, if they can help you with anything. I consistently get asked if I need help 4-5 times by various employees when I go there and spend any time browsing. 3. The employee turnover is LOW. As soon as I realized I was seeing the same faces for YEARS, I decided to shop here instead of a big chain whenever possible. I'm assuming they do right by their employees, because the same ladies are working the checkout and the same guys are working the floor whenever I stop in. It's also why they miraculously seem to know exactly where to find each obscure item they sell in their store. I shop here to keep the money in the community and not get sent to some CEO out of state. I hope my suspicions are correct Millen takes good care of their employees. Just your regular old mom-and-pop shop, offering all the basic tools one may need for their home. We could not find a manual edger at any big-name store (i.e. Home Depot & Lowe's), but Millen had the exact one we wanted. Very convenient and offers a large variety of items. read more

A superb store. Probably the best hardware store in Illinois. They have everything, including abundant enthusiastic employees, always ready to help. They are the heroes of old school brick and mortar. My dog got sprayed by a skunk; I called knowing they would have the right product, which they did. Of course. I needed esoteric candelabra light bulbs. Including a standard blue one for my teenager. Of course they had them. They even have chalk paint. Doesn't get any better than this. read more

Millen hardware comes to the rescue for Pinewood Derby needs. Was pleasantly surprised to find a great selection of materials for making the 'wicked fast' Pinewood Derby car for my Tiger scout son wants to create. They have everything you'll need to make a winning car - blocks of wood, paint, decals, weights and lubricant. Best of all they have a couple small scales there so you can bring your car in and weigh it so you don't get disqualified for being overweight at the race. Millen Hardware is as old-world hardware as you can get. It's been a fixture in Wilmette for at least 50 years--the ambiance gives it away. They stock everything and prices are reasonable. Not low, low prices, but good. It's a bit disheveled, but that's what I expect from a local business that's been around forever. The best part of going to Millen Hardware is the customer service. There are plenty of very experienced men and women who work there that seem to know about every house project I'm working on and add valuable input. read more

I really want to support the small local hardware store. However, this is by far the rudest and most bitter--and consistently so--group of employees I've ever experienced. Particularly the cashiers. As Bruce M has speculated, there must be a miserable company atmosphere that's cultivating and/or tolerating such attitudes. I've given this place about ten tries now, and from now on I will happily drive another five miles to avoid them. Their prices are too high to treat customers like this. At Home Depot I'm treated like a valued customer, and the prices are low to boot. read more

We have used this great down home old school hardware store forever. The team here learns to know you by name. I have not been to a large home center in years thanks to these guys (any how who wants their car run into by a cart full of lumber if all you need is a list of hardware). I cannot say enough great things about this shop - not to mention my kids love going here too. read more

You can get lower prices at Lowe's or Home Depot but the customer service and knowledge of employees at Millen is peerless. I don't understand how this place can afford to have so many employees but I am happy they can. You'll never be wandering around with no clue where to find what you want because you are almost always greeted near the door by a friendly person eager to help. If you are stuck with a problem they'll be happy to make suggestions. You'll swear you just stepped out of a time machine into the 1950's at Millen. I ride a bicycle there but parking for cars is never a problem. Don't forget to pick up an ice cold soda for 79 cents near the checkout! read more

I moved to Wilmette 20 years ago and immediately went to Millen's, hoping I'd found my new hardware store. The staff was rude, dismissive and generally unhelpful. I've gone back every few years to see if there's been any change and its always the same. They simply DO NOT want customers in their store. I can only imagine what kind of culture exists there to warrant such low morale. I go to True Value on Linden, where the people are friendly, helpful and sincerely want to help you. I wish I can give negative stars but one is enough. Store is amazing, they have EVERYTHING. Fair prices and good employees. But the cashiers. They are the WORST. One is good. She is sweet, respectful, and by the looks of it she does her job well. Props the her. I don't know her by name, but the younger one. But the other two. This store really needs to think about their cashiers, I'm sorry but I don't like being disrespected in any way. Especially when I have been respectful to them. One they are always talking. In one situation they had a line and they are jus blabbering away. And they are usually Talking about how rude costumers are and how they don't know how to read and etc. It's annoying. How employees talk about their customers. How is that. Giving bad attitude for no reason. I'm tired of it. I rather go to and Home Depot where they even talk at all. At least they give you a smile. If they like talking crap about their customers do it on their free time. Not in front of us. I have so much more to say. From yelling to the costumers about coupons, to being yelled at because I'm giving my reward number to early or to fast. I really hope one of the hardware employees see this. I love this store, been coming here forever. From the stuff they have, which is almost everything. But I'm disappointed and honestly sometimes disgusted at the cashiers. How would they allow or even hire some of the rudest people I ever met. Not all of them. Some are actually really nice and don't cause me headaches. But the two on the closer side to the door. I really don't appreciate being yelled at to pull my card out when the machine starts to beep. And it's not just me. I've seen the older lady yell at costumers before. All the time. I wish they would talk less and focus more on ringing the line of costumer up. Such a great store. Great floor people and even some of the cashiers are friendly and great, but I just can't deal with being told to shut up by one of the cashiers. read more

Who could not like this quintessential hardware store? It is everything the big box stores are not. You can frequently find the owner standing by the cash registers. The staff is knowledgeable, available, friendly and helpful. The prices are good and fair. (It disturbs me that people assume small store charge more. It's not necessarily so.) One of the best things is that they have, like many small independent stores, merchandise that they've collected over the years, so that you can find things here that aren't available elsewhere. Be prepared to be present, to take a breath, enjoy your surroundings and chat with a fellow customer or salesperson. read more

This is the GREATEST place!!(have no clue and can't even imagine what that B.M. guy :( is talking about!?) They have everything you could ever imagine or need for just about any project -if you're MacGyver, it's a dream come true, if not the staff is right there to help, always! They have wonderful employees wearing red vest allover the place just waiting to help or asking you if you need help. The staff is full of very experienced years down to very accommodating young high school men that all understand what customer service is about.......so if you love creaky wood floors and bins full of bits and pieces of hardware, and everything inbetween (kitchen towels, candles, whatever!) then you need to visit and get what you need, our what you thought you'd never find! read more

Rude, unhelpful staff? No way. Staff at Millen prowl the aisles continuously, offering help to every customer who comes into the store. Sometimes, it's a little too much attention! They're also knowledgeable and have filled me in on all kinds of things from what size plumbing tape to buy to properly installing a bolt into a brick wall. When I do make a mistake, they never quibble about returns. They did a great job replacing the screens on my doors, recommending pet-strength which have held up well to the cat's claws. This place is a real gem and thankfully, still in business despite the proliferation of big box stores. They stock all the hardware basics plus kitchen stuff, gardening tools and products, cleaning products (Mrs. Meyers, yay!) and some real oddities like Anti-Monkey Butt Powder. I love the rewards program. They send us $5 coupons monthly. My daughter loves the trains and the candy selection. read more

Usually someone asks you within your first couple of minutes (literally) of being in the store if you need help. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable! I try to support local businesses and for over twenty years have patronized Millen's. A year ago I would have given them 5 stars and raved about the great service. However, the past few times I have gone in and needed assistance I have ended up with the same tall blond guy that seems to have a chip on his shoulder. When I asked him where I could find wallpaper remover, he looked at me and said "Have you ever done this before?" in the same one one would use with a slow witted child. He went over to the wallpaper adhesive area and I was able to find (by myself) six different types of wallpaper stripper. He offered zero assistance and seemed a bit miffed that the product I wanted actually existed. My husband wasn't with me on this trip but he also thinks the guy has a bad attitude. read more

Didn't really get what I was talking about even though it was a pretty basic hardware store question and didn't know what to do. Very helpful staff, and it is always easy to find someone who works there. They are really creative with their solutions sometimes, and they always know what they are talking about (unlike big box employees who will admit that they often have no background in their assigned department). They do sometimes have the best price on things, like canning supplies. read more

This is what small town hardware stores are supposed to be! Forget Home Depot and all the rude people pushing you over, and you having to "self-check out" as the large companies minimize their labor, and also minimize their services to me. Millen Hardware is the perfect place to stop (even as a wife with limited knowledge of what I need sometimes). The place is full of employees offering to help, and they even ask specific questions about what you plan to do with the item you need, and the often offer other suggestions, if you're looking for any.
