The sourdough fad continues! My meal at Leo was one i won't soon forget. A candlelit solo dinner on the backend of a busy dinner service was liberating and relaxing. Oh, and the food was superb. Complimented by an amaro highball, my meatballs and mushroom pizza were absolutely superb. Juicy meatballs with a rich marinara and a bit of focaccia to pair! The pizza was amazing. We were looking forward to trying Leo especially after reading that Apollo bagels started here, hence the sourdough. I'm a big fan of Apollo bagels and was excited to try the pizza. The space looks like it's great for big parties. There was a birthday celebration one table away that looked like 10+ people We ordered a few pies to share and a salad for the 6 of us All the pizzas were ok, there isn't a strong sourdough flavor like I was expecting. I think we liked the picante classica the best. The NY slice pie is bigger, so it may be better for larger groups. I'd probably come back if we lived in the area; it seems like a good neighborhood spot, but wouldn't make the trek out here specifically for their pizza. This was some of the best pizza I've had in NYC. It's more of a rustic Neapolitan style pizza, with a slightly thicker crust than the Italian staple. The flavor is incredibly well developed - distinctly sourdough flavored - and the texture is perfect, with a slight crispiness and an airy crumb on the inside with strong structure. I tried two pizzas, the margherita and the papa madre. The margherita was nice for trying the pizza crust in a "pure" form. The papa madre goes off the deep end on toppings - some bitterness, brightness, and crunch from dandelion greens dressed in lemon, fluffy potatoes, and a variety of cheeses. This was a really unique flavor profile for pizza. I managed to get a reservation just a day or two before for 11:30 am on a Sunday, but it started to get busy towards the end of my visit. The bill worked out to $55 for the two pizzas, and it was worth every penny. read more

Leo is a Neapolitan-style pizzeria, bakery and café that opened in Brooklyn, New York in December 2019. It was founded by restaurateurs and business partners Mike Fadem, Gavin Compton, Joey Scalabrino and Thomas Traudt. Along with restaurateur Marie Tribouilloy, Fadem and Compton originally opened another Neapolitan-style pizzeria, Ops, in Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood in 2016. Compton is also the owner of NYC coffee chain Variety Coffee Roasters, which opened its first location in 2008. Following the success of Ops, Fadem and Compton decided to team up with Scalabrino and Traudt to open a new pizzeria in Williamsburg. Unlike the wood-fired oven at Ops, the oven at Leo is an electric Pizza Master oven. Leo is a sit-down restaurant that can accommodate about 70 people. The main focus of the menu is their artisanal sourdough pizzas, but they also serve pasta dishes, burgers, antipasti, and a weekend brunch menu. I was trying out a number of Brooklyn and Queens breweries and pizzerias and this was my third stop of the day. The pizzeria had been on my bucket list for a while. I grabbed myself a seat at the bar in the main dining room. The staff told me that the pizzas could take a little while and that I might be interested in ordering an appetizer first. I enjoyed a plate of "Olives" as I sipped on a delicious "Spritz". For pizza, I decided to order the one which sounded the most unusual to me: the "Papa Madre" (potatoes, dandelion greens, fontina, lemon, oregano). I've enjoyed countless pizza pies with potatoes before (whether mashed or roasted), but never one with dandelion greens before. I have to be honest... it was DELICIOUS! We got the Margherita and the San Giuseppe. The SanGiussepe has spicy sausage, onions, green olives, and provolone. The crust (sourdough) and the char was outstanding. I'm not a huge pizza fan (I know, blasphemy living in NYC) but my friend recommended this spot because they use sourdough in their pizza dough (which is new to me). They don't take reservations, but we didn't have an issue being seated at 6 PM on a Friday. We ordered an aperol spritz to start - very refreshing! My friend said it was one of the best aperol spritzs she had in NYC. We ordered the Caesar salad, margarita pizza, and rigatoni. Food came out as they were prepared - I would have preferred everything to come out at once. My favorite dish of the night was the rigatoni - I'm still thinking about it 3 days later.. Pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce was divine. I would come back just for the pasta. Caesar salad was huge and more than enough for 2 people to share. I should not have come here. I felt all out of place. Too many stares from other patrons wondering why I was here. Children of a certain age that I feel should be home. Came here on a Friday Night and the restaurant was busy. The interior was a little dark which adds to a sort of mood lighting. We ordered the Clam Pie and the Hanger Steak. The Clam Pie was so tasty. *corn and blueberry soft serve* -- will get to this Someone recently said to me, "There's no such thing as the best pizza in New York anymore; there are so many great options." However, are they saying that because they just haven't found the best? I don't know, and if you have input on this, please do share. Point is, the pizza was great, and it's the fact that it's sourdough that made it great. Small menu--less is more. What they do, they make sure to do well, like sticking to two salads, for instance--a chopped and a Caesar, and that's that. The Caesar has anchovies slapped right on top, and you know what? I've recently discovered I love them. But what I want to spotlight, what makes Leo worth recognizing in a sea of restaurants, is the corn blueberry soft serve. It was brought to me because they accidentally made an extra, and it goes to show that what you're looking for comes when you're not looking at all. If there's one new thing to try this month, this should be it. You've never had anything like it--it embodies warm blueberry jam spread over butter on sourdough toast, all melting and marbling together. Buttery sweet, yet salty, and oh so comforting. A cute, neighborhood restaurant tucked into the heart of Williamsburg -- stopped by for a weeknight dinner for 3 and we were able to get seated without a reservation. Their HH goes until 7, so we were just able to catch the tail end to snag a drink! The ambiance is super laid back and it definitely got busy (but never too loud) as the night went on. The servers are very nice and patient -- I didn't feel rushed at all and they stopped by a handful of times to check on us, but overall it was such a nice place to catch up with friends since we weren't racing to place an order. The food came out relatively quickly. The food here was delicious, too! They have a fairly small menu but they do it all well, which I appreciate. The pizza is super thin and the crust is fire -- I liked The Hill since it was super light. I pass by Leo almost every day and it's always brimming with people. They also make many lists for top pizza spots in the city so I was happy to finally give it a try. Made a reservation for two at 8:30 on a Thursday. I think on busier evenings it is safer to make a reservation (and this can be done the day before) because I always see people waiting outside the restaurant presumably waiting for seating. We were seated quickly and efficiently and our server was very attentive. We opted to split a bottle of white wine, the wine list was so extensive that we asked our server for recommendations for a relatively inexpensive but dry wine. He brought the Tutti Frutti Toranja as his recommendation which we got. It was unfortunate to me that you can't sample wines before committing to a bottle like some other natural wine bars. For food, we opted for one pizza and one pasta to split. We did the margherita pizza and the cacio e pepe pasta. I definitely preferred the pizza to the pasta. I felt the pasta was a bit too al dente for my liking and also extremely salty/cheesy. The pizza was very good, I'm always a sucker for Neapolitan style so right up my alley. I don't want to deduct a star since Leo remains one of my favorite neighborhood eateries. But I have to voice my frustration that every time I order a bagel here on weekend mornings, the order is always wrong without fail! A few weeks ago I ordered a sesame bagel with butter. The bagel came out plain and I asked if there was butter on it - I was gaslit into believeing the butter had "just melted." Halfway through the noticeably unmoist bagel, I summoned up the courage to ask yet again, and this time they confirmed that the bagel was in fact unbuttered. Those and the dates bring meatiness to this sublime, "classic Italian American vibes" salad. It's pizza shop salad. The kind you might find with chunks of salami, and always with that oregano-heavy red wine and olive oil vinaigrette. Not your classic chopped salad in the slightest. Called in a pick up order on a Monday at 6pm and it was estimated to be done around 30 mins after on their website. We got there a little earlier than the pick up time since many places over estimate and we didn't want the pizza to sit. To our surprise, the place was completely empty and the pizza wasn't ready until the exact time it was estimated for. This was my first time here so I didn't know what to expect but it was really good in its own way. It has big garlic shavings, grated parm, i believe red pepper flakes, and delicious basil on top. I thought the garlic was a little overwhelming sometimes because I wanted to taste more of the sauce and cheese and found it difficult to get any flavor other than garlic. This restaurant reminds me of a classic w village Italian spot dropped into williamsburg. Delicious sourdough pizza and apps + incredibly informative and helpful staff for choosing wine. A great spot for a small group but it does get pretty loud, at some points it was hard to hear my friends even though we were sitting very close to each other. It is a little more on the expensive side, our total for two apps, two pies, a cheaper bottle of wine and their soft service (highly recommend) was about $180. Great spot overall! The everything bagel topping was plentiful, and the cream cheese was solid. The shining star had to be the donut though. My least favorite part about Leo was the sit down experience. Everyone is sitting super close together and the tables are too small to bring out more than one or two dishes at once. When the pizza came, there was barely any room for our individual plates. It's super loud too, which isn't helped by all the tables being so close together. The service is terrible. NOT family friendly. We went as a family with our toddler. The service SUCKS. The waitress was very unfriendly, put in the wrong order and then forgot about our pizza order. And all the while acting like it's our fault any of this happened. We have an egg allergy and was told to skip the cacio e Pepe and order the tagliatelle because it's gluten free. We ordered it and rigatoni came out in a bolognese sauce, no explanation on why it's not tagliatelle? It takes FOREVER to get any food. We waited over 75minutes from order before we got any food. When I asked the waitress (I don't know her name but she had a European accent) to check on our food, she gave a very flippant response like it's our fault that we don't have the pizza. She finally comes with our pizza, no apologies about the wait and almost burned out toddler with the plate. If you have children you know how painful it is to keep your toddler in check for 75 minutes. Literally one of the worst experience I've had in Williamsburg. Honestly all of this would've been fine if the server wasn't SO RUDE. read more
