Due to COVID you can only get their FABULOUS ice cream at the walk-up window, but this is absolutely a "don't miss" stop in Spearfish. We were on our way through on the interstate and wanted ice cream - boy are we glad we decided to come here! Homemade, creamy, delicious ice cream in well-above-average waffle cones and very reasonably priced ($3 for a single scoop and $4.50 for 2 scoops in a waffle cone). Our group of 4 had Chocolate with Tart Cherry, Butter Pecan, Vanilla with Hot Fudge Sauce, and Red Raspberry and they were all delicious. There's a very small but lovely park right nearby in which to enjoy your cones in the shade. read more

If you're in Spearfish, you have to make sure to visit Leones. The inside is really cute and there's lots of outdoor seating for the summertime. And the staff is always super nice. Their ice cream is AMAZING! There's tons of great flavors that they change everyday. They have some really cool, creative flavors, like Spearfish Rhubarb, Crow Peak Pile-o-Dirt (which is made with local brewery Crow Peak beer), London Fog, and my personal favorites, Green Tea and Black Licorice. Even the more plain flavors are good - their Milk Chocolate is one of the best chocolate ice creams around, and their Sweet Cream is awesome with some hot fudge on top. My only issue with Leones has been that they don't mark which ones have nuts in them, so if you have nut allergies like I do make sure you ask before tasting anything! Overall, Leones is an adorable ice cream shop with super friendly staff and awesome flavors. read more

My daughter and I stopped in on a warm Sunday afternoon in March. What a find! Leone offered a bite of any of the dozen flavors of hand dipped ice cream that they were offering today. My daughter talked me into trying avocado flavored ice cream. I didn't expect to like it. But it was creamy and rich with just a hint of avocado. I loved it! So we each had a waffle cone with avocado flavored ice cream. The waffle cone was one of the best I have ever had; light and flaky. It had to have been homemade that day. What a treat! This is a small, nicely configured parlor on the ground level on the left hand side of Spearfish's old town hall building downtown. During the winter they are only open on Saturday and Sunday. I love small businesses that are operated by young people who own the business. Leone and her partner, John, have done a first class job of setting up and operating this shop. It's hidden back from the road, so look hard, you want to find this place. They only offer a handful of flavors you can get by the scoop, but you can also check the pints in the freezer for others. There's some fun flavors to sample: on my visit it included strawberry lime and ginger chcolate chunk. You can also find traditional vanilla bean and chocolate. Prices are reasonable. There's a lovely courtyard out front to sit back and relax awhile why savoring your choice (s). read more
