I own California Ski Company in Berkeley. We just did a full remodel. I used Leon's Powder Coating to paint all of our lighting fixtures the same color. The first time I showed up they had already closed. A man saw me wandering around looking for the entrance and approached me. He introduced himself as Hector and told me he was an employee there. He explained that they had closed up but re-opened to help me out. Awesome customer service! I brought a few batches of products to paint/coat. I also had some special needs that required additional work on their part. They took it on as a challenge instead of a hassle. There needed to be a fair bit of back and forth to get the details down. The pricing is good, really good. They barely prep though, so prep it yourself. It will turn out a lot nicer. Everything I prepped turned out good. The stuff I let them prep, was not so good. The do mostly industrial, bicycles and fencing. For show car quality stuff, I wouldn't use. But my car is a driver, so the job was fine for me. They did an entire camaro subframe, control arms, trans crossmember for like a few hundred bucks. The powdercoat place in Concord wanted like $2000 to do it. So it was worth it for sure. I had a bare aluminum train horn blasted. Friendly lady up front. A little more pricey than what I expected. There's no such thing as perfect, but they did miss a few parts of old paint on the horn, but the glass bead blasting process went well overall. Would I take a product here again? Probably. Just make sure you're crystal clear in what you want to do with whatever you bring in. The clear coat they put on it was nicely applied. Why is powder coating so cheap? Man these guys could charge a lot more and I would still come. I get metal parts fab'd at albany steel and then I take them to Leon's for powder coat. The stuff I make is used outdoors in parking lots and garages. Painless drop off and pick up, not to mention the friendly staff keeps me coming back to Leon's. They have a good selection of colors and can special order if needed. Powder coat is much tougher and rust resistant compared to paint. Its also much less messy and time consuming. Leon is amazing. I've not had better service. Minus one star though because his guy badly dinged my wood floors and the stair wall when removing the 100 year old radiators. Leon said the guy was new and gave me a discount. Though the floors can not be repaired, Leon was professional throughout and eager to make up for it. Leon's customer service is awesome because: 1) He responds immediately to my emails 2) He picked up my four radiators three hours after I called him 3) He promised to deliver it back the VERY NEXT day 4) He followed up by calling me 3 times and the very next morning as well to check what color I wanted (My phone had run out of battery so I missed his calls) 5) He was very patient, explaining my color options 6) He was quick to make amends when his pick up guy damaged my floors read more

Been here twice - I think the reviews that are 3 Stars and above are pretty accurate. Most comments are spot on - seem to be pretty big on the masses with large/bulk items, though I have gone there myself for some smaller items. Ive had no complaints for the price. First time was so so on some bars I had done for my truck. I went with a textured matte black finish and though it was done - I didn't realize until I went home that some of the texture was not exactly consistent. For the price, no complaints. Second time was for a bike frame I decided to restore along with Fenders and Fork. That time it was perfect.... 3 Stars because I think their prices are fair and negotiable. They do clean work when done correctly and its convenient for me. I wouldn't say its a place you would go to for show quality finish, though Im sure with proper items - it probably could pass. Ill post pictures of the finished bike I had done here - compliments on it all the time and it was powder coated here...so tells you something about it. Not the best, not the worst - perfect for those quick powder coat jobs you need done. Ill come back for other items for sure. read more

I feel like a sucker that just got taken. I dropped off my valve covers and air cleaner for a powder coat while my engine rebuild was being finished up. This was on a Monday. They quote me $100 and tell me they will be ready Saturday. I call on the following Monday morning to confirm pick-up...nope. Haven't even gotten around to it. Now they'll be ready "Thursday". Problem is, come Wednesday, my car is now done and the only thing my mechanic is waiting on are the valve covers. So I'm now being charged $50/day because I'm taking up a bay in his garage. I call on Thursday and they say "after 2pm" AT NO TIME does someone apologize for or even acknowledge the 5-day delay. I pick these up and they look like they were painted with a rattle can. The inside is filthy with dirt which shows that he doesn't even bother wiping things off prior to painting them. And because the pieces were painted together, when we try to pull the sections apart, chunks of paint come off with the top of the filter assembly. Looks absolutely pathetic. Trust me Yelpers, take your stuff to Melrose Metal Finishing off 98th. They did my wheels and they were well priced, top quality and right on time with their estimate. i've been here on 3 different occasions 1) first time here, i wanted to just try them out, so i called and made an appointment to drop off a part on a saturday morning, i arrived a little after 8am and talked over what i wanted to be done, pretty simple job, just sandblast and powdercoat my subframe matte black, we agreed on a price that i felt was excellent, and i left him my number and went home, that same day at 2pm, i received a call saying your part is done, i was wondering if he had the wrong guy so i asked him what color is the part? and he said matte black subframe, i was VERY surprised so i made the drive over and i was WOW'd, my subframe was beat before but it was as nice as it can be now, picked up my part and told him i'd be back 2) that following monday, i came back with a bunch of parts, 3 engine mounts, 2 aluminum canards, 4 engine brackets, 1 alternator bracket, 1 power steering bracket, and a bunch of little things, once again, i got an excellent price, left the place and i told him no rush on these, 3 days later, i received a call and they were finished, this time it was black chrome 3) my most recent visit, i had a couple large parts, engine subframe, 4 brackets, transmission brace, rear diff brace, i wanted these powdercoated bright purple, left my parts and about 4 days later, i received a call read more

I tried Leon's for a few car parts (valve covers, rims, bumpers, intake manifold, etc) after reading reviews saying they were good. But here's what I found. The good: Selection: They have tons and tons of colors to choose from, and they're all basically the same price. As far as I know, that's not normal (special colors not used every day usually cost more) but then again, with their pricing arrangement (read: no set price, they make it up) I guess that makes sense. Turn around time: I've had things just sandblasted while I wait (10 mins) or other items that were supposed to be done in 2 weeks and finished in 1. So I'd say they're pretty quick. Except when you need parts redone because they came out bad the first time. The bad: Price: The price quoted is basically negotiable. They deal mainly with people bringing in large industrial things for buildings (fences, gates, large doors, etc) and these small things get priced out to whatever the guy you talk to feels like. If you don't like the price (b/c it did seem high a few times) just go lower. You get no paperwork for the stuff dropped off, and don't really get a receipt. If you have a problem with parts from them, you have to go back immediately while they still remember you (I did this). They will fix whatever you want for no charge, but when you're trying to get a project completed, the extra time and hassle of driving to and from Leon's is a PITA. You get what you pay for with Leon's. Quality: As mentioned above, I had to have parts redone. I'm not impressed with the quality of their work (bubbling, uneven coverage) or the durability of the powder coating itself. I'm from the midwest originally, and when I had things powder coated at the local place, the coating came out extremely tough. Like, bash it with a hammer and there's no noticeable damage. With Leon's, if you drop a part, it will chip. If it gets hit by a rock (common for a bumper), it will chip. So durability is bad, and quality control is bad, and for the price? Bad. Bottom line: If you want some parts coated quickly and cheaply (depending on your haggling skills), they're an ok shop. If you want the coatings to be durable and last, look elsewhere. I've been told Maas Brothers in Livermore are good and will try them next time. read more

After reading the only review of this shop I decided to give it a shot since it was only 10 minutes away from my house. I had a motorcycle frame that had some rust that I wanted to get sandblasted and powder coated. I went down there and talked to Leon himself. He said it would be $90 to sandblast it and another $60 to paint it. Not too bad of a price I guess. We go in his office, I pick out a color. I didn't get any type of paper work on my behalf to show what I wanted done or proof that this piece of metal was mine. He had me write my contact info on a piece of scrap paper, gave me his business card and I was on my way. Fast forward 2 days later. I pick up my frame, it still had sand in it here and there. No more rust, it was smooth & paint was ok. What do you expect for $150 right? = ) So when I get home I inspect it and find that the last 6 or so digits of the VIN is barely legible. I went back 2 days later and asked Leon if he would remove the paint over the VIN, which he did with no hesitation. Overall, the place is good. Only if I would have been a bit more specific in terms of what I wanted done exactly. ie: not painting over the VIN. So if you need something sandblasted, painted or powder coated, I'd recommend Leon's. Just be specific in what you want done. Ensure that you've done all necessary prep work. And it would be very helpful if you know some spanish. read more

I took two brass bird statues in that were blackened and ugly to get sandblasted and painted. They worked fast, were very responsive and were reasonably priced. They even emailed pictures of the work in progress after the sandblasting, then showed them to a metal refinishing guy before we decided to go ahead and paint them. Great customer service and a great result. Looking around their shop, you can see that they have the capability to do a wide variety of work from small parts, to much larger jobs. I went in just looking to get this small job done, but came away referring my wife's commercial real estate company to them for some more large scale work like railings and gates.
