Beautiful restaurant, great service, outstanding food and drink! My mom and I went for a girls weekend and couldn't have been happier with our visit. Leo's is spacious and nicely decorated. You feel very comfortable and not cramped like many restaurants. The dirty martini and sea scallops entree were the stand out highlights. Give Leo's a try, you will be delighted! The service was great. The food was decent. They didn't have mashed potatoes, so I got the spetzial (sp?) some german pasta. it was ok. not anything to write about. I had the surf and turn which was good. The filet was cooked properly which is always nice, when a restaurant can execute on that. The lobster tails were swimming in butter, which made me like them a little less. I prefer to dip it in butter myself rather than having it completely drenched in it. I also got the french onion soup which could have been amazing if they gave any broth with it, it was basically onions, bread and cheese. No broth! I'd give it another shot, maybe it was pretty late in the day so I got not the best quality? who knows. read more

We had higher expectations for Leos based ok N the reputation alone. This was our first and likely last visit to this establishment. The level of service was a step above Applebees while the food was mediocre considering the price point. There did not seem to be much in the way of culinary creativity in both the food pairings and presentation When asked if we wanted our crab legs opened for is, the server proceeded to take the legs off our plates and place them directly on the serving tray while opening them. In addition when asked if we wanted our leftovers boxed, our food was placed on a serving tray along with dirty plates that were being cleared from other tables. read more

Lovely, lovely restaurant! Elegant dining room with tables set far apart so you can get in and out easily and not have to listen to your neighbors' conversation. Patrons even seem to dress up for a night out -- not a sweatsuit in sight. EXCELLENT SERVICE. Staff works well together to see that all needs are met and are not the least bit intrusive. As a matter of fact, water glasses are refilled and empty glasses and plates disappear from the table and you don't even realize anyone was there! SUPERB FOOD. Husband had a cup of Clam Chowder followed by the Seafood Pan Roast. I had Chargrilled Sea scallops wrapped in smoked salmon. Nothing short of spectacular. Excellent value. We felt the prices are very reasonable and look forward to returning when we're in GR again. read more

Wife and I came here for our anniversary. The food was amazing, and was rivaled only by its amazing service. Our waitress was fantastic and friendly, and had full knowledge of the menu and its' specials. I had a Tuna Steak and my wife had the Pacific Salmon. Overall it was an enjoyable experience, but a few things kept it from being at the top of my list of places to eat in GR. Here is a quick review of my experience (full, in-depth review can be found at http://masticationexpress.blogspot.com/) Starter: Chicken spring rolls. We started with them because my wife is not a big fan of seafood. I thought the chicken was tasty and tender, not dry at all. The rest of the veggies that make up the filling were good too. The wrapper was crispy, and the hoisin sauce was very good. Mains: My wife got the Filet Mignon with merlot demi-glace with sour cream-chive mashed potato and fresh asparagus. The steak was perfectly cooked, and the demi-glace complimented the steak, not took it over. The mashed potatoes were homestyle smashed with chunks of potato still present. Asparagus was fresh and saute'd very nicely. The server said it was the best in the city... I disagree. Good but not the best. I got the boullibasse. The saffron-sherry tomato broth with leeks was good. The clams tasted like they were smoked and were a nice surprise. The scallops, mussels, snow crab leg and salmon were good. The lobster and shrimp though were overcooked a little bit and subtracted a bit from the dish, which was disappointing. Desert: Vanilla cheesecake with fresh berries. The cheesecake hit the sweetspot of not too dense but not too airy either. The berries added a nice pop of freshness to the desert. Leo's has a nice ambiance, and our server was pretty good, but it can be a bit pricey. But it didn't wow me like some other restaurants in the city do. They want to be fine dining, and almost get there; but fine dining is more than wine bottles, table cloths, and "fancy" silverware and china. It is perfectly cooked food all the time. Would I go again? Yes I would. At the same time there are other places I would visit more often. read more

Classy, comfortable, elegant restaurant. The food was fresh tasty exquisite fish. Had the Cajun chicken tortellini, stuffed shrimp and shrimp carbonara at our table. I started coming to LEO's roughly four years ago and it has become by far my favorite restaurant in town. The food is always amazing and the service is impeccable. The owner, Leo, is one of the nicest guys and is very welcoming to all of his guests. He takes the time to remember his customers who frequent the place, as well as the out of town visitors who only stop in twice a year. I don't even know where to begin with the food! There is always a wide assortment of seafood and specials. I have a tough decision deciding whether to go with the Filet Mignon, the tuna filet, or the linguini with clams/scallops. I always start with the oysters (VERY FRESH) or shrimp cocktail. The Ceasar salad is a must! There are so many good things on the menu; I've NEVER had a bad dish. The servers can always recommend a great bottle of wine to accompany dinner, but if you aren't a wine drinker they have a wide array of specialty cocktails that are fun and different. YOU MUST PREPARE THOUGH-the desserts are amazing and change each time. Do not pass up on the tiramisu or the key lime pie. It is out of this world! THIS PLACE IS FIVE STARS hands down. We enjoyed Tahnksgiving dinner 2011 at Leo's except for a major flaw. The side dishes were very good, the service excellent. The meat, however, was dry, shredded and over-cooked. We did not send it back as we were entertaining guests and did not want to make a scene. It was surprising to us that the main feature of a holiday dinner was so poor in quality. Our reservation was at 11:45 so there was no possibility of running low or reheating the meat. My favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids for many years without exception. I normally eat out 3-4 times a week and given all of the choices, when friends ask what my first choice is, it's Leo's. You can have soup sampler and a wedge salad for $10 or you can find an item for $40 and everywhere in between. My personal favorite is that Salmon and Corn Chowder, the selection of oysters and my entree choice is horseradish encrusted whitefish. They make their own desserts daily and they are excellent. Unfortunately, my favorite dessert, the dark chocolate creme brulee is only available at certain times during the year. EXCELLENT RESTAURANT. GREAT SERVICE. read more

Today I went to Leo's for a much anticipated lunch. I'd been before, and always enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. Not today. I ordered the lake perch, sauteed with a request for extra lemon on the side. I received the perch. It was not done on one side and burnt on the other (for each piece of fish! So, no accident), and you guessed it, no extra lemon. My water was never refilled, even though my glass was empty after the first 5 minutes. Although my dining companion received 2 diet cokes. Ordered the blueberry tart for dessert. Not fresh flaky crust or warm juicy blueberries bursting with flavor in your mouth that I wanted. It had been re-heated in a microwave which altered the crust texture, the blueberry mixture was that old mealy thick tough texture, and worst of all I could taste the refrigerator taste it was stored in. Perhaps cleaning your fridge and putting in some order absorb might me in order? Or better yet fresh pastries? Not their best efforts. As an esteemed club member I expect better. Not sure If I will pay the $25 again to belong to an esteemed group that they don't seem to esteem. read more

Interesting that the website lists "Best Restaurant in Grand Rapids" 2006-2009. Because it is 2014 and it's understandable why this has been left behind. A dated decor that leads to a dated clientele. If you are looking for a modern, fun, spot for dinner take a pass here. The food, likewise, missed the mark. Oysters Florentine and escargot appetizers were fine, but plain. Nothing to write home about. I was with a group of four, all of which went the fish or seafood route, and none were wowed. I had the seafood jambalaya. Too much salt, too much garlic, and generally a lack of taste throughout. The salmon dish, which is described as "Scottish King Salmon", tasted exactly same as any ordinary farm-raised salmon. The scallops were the best received dish in my group. Dessert, which has been highly touted here, was icing on the cake (pun intended). We ordered the cherry blast ice cream cake. Thinking we were in the heart of cherry country, we expected a lot. Instead, a simple maraschino taste that disappointed. Lastly, a very cold waiter with no interaction with the group. Failed to mention that the Walleye was not available ahead of time, and only did so when one in the group tried to order. Many, many better options when in Grand Rapids. read more

Usually a wonderful place! LONG HAIR IN FOOD!!!!!!! On this night however, I was left with a HORRIBLE taste in my mouth, LITERALLY!!! Ordered lamb, medium rare. It arrived well done with one piece medium. Since it was my son's birthday that we were celebrating I chose not to send it back. Decided to eat the well done piece first....big mistake.... it had a LONG HAIR wrapped around the chop so much that I had to STRUGGLE to disentangle it from my mouth!!!! They were apologetic and took it off the bill, gave my son a free dessert. I called today to get the name of the manager and got DAVID on the phone. He was extremely arrogant, refused to give the name of the kitchen manager (don't you think the kitchen manager would want to know), started asking me "what was this all about" and then called ME rude!!!!! Lovely seafood spot in downtown Grand Rapids! After considering a couple different seafood places near our hotel, we chose Leo's for dinner last night. It was a very nice dining experience! The place is very pretty and open, with high ceilings, large windows, and lots of wood accents. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. They have delicious bread- these super soft, sage flavored rolls that come out piping hot to your table. For my appetizer, I had to try the Lobster and Shrimp Cakes and I was not disappointed. They are loaded with lobster meat and whole bay shrimps, served on a plate drizzled with a sort of herbal, lemony mustard sauce. My entree was the Seafood Pan Roast- scallops, shrimp, and fish served in a fantastic Cajun cream sauce over Cajun rice. It also came topped with a slice of fried tomato- yummmm. The scallops in particular were incredible- perfectly cooked and tender. So if I am ever in Grand Rapids again, I will plan on making a return trip to Leo's! read more

Very good, best seafood dish(es) we've had. Went here for a birthday celebration. One of us got the whitefish and it was good, one of us got the smoked salmon-wrapped scallops and the third got seafood panroast in creamy cajun sauce. All very good, but the salmon-wrapped scallops were very, very good.The panroast was a 'limited time' offering. The service was a tad slow but just allowed us to better enjoy our conversation. Overall great experience, and it rivals the fresh from the ocean seafood dishes we've had on the coast in Florida. Will definitely be back to Leo's. read more

We had a reservation for a party of 6 and needed to add one more person. Leo's could not get us in until much later in the evening. We have dined there very often and even have the Estemmed Guest card. This was to be a special occasion as our son had moved back to GR and we were hoping he would fall in love with Leo's as we had. Stopped in with my wife for our one year anniversary. Made a reservation, but didn't end up needing it as it was near empty on a Saturday night. The decor was a little bit like a chincy hotel restaurant. Since we were celebrating we decided to start with martinis and an appetizer. This was certainly the highlight of the meal. I went with a Black Cherry Amaretto martini, which was hard not to down like a shot, it was so good. She went with the Pomegranate and it was not quite as good, but very strong, so I guess it's a trade off. The appetizer was a lobster and shrimp cake, and it was amazing. But for 8.50 the portion was on the small side. For the main course I chose the rack of lamb and my wife chose the parmesan encrusted Walleye. My dinner was served with a giant baked potato and corn on the cob. I thought the corn on the cob was an odd choice due to the environment, they give you 17 utensils and then corn on the cob. I felt a bit barbaric picking it up and eating like I was at a picnic. Both entrees were a little bland and on the over done side. Definitely not worth the 60 bucks combined between the two of them. At least the portions were healthy, so bonus points there. We finished our meal with the caramel apple cheesecake, and it was easily the best cheesecake I've ever had. I'd stop in again just for the martini and the cheesecake. Service was so-so, as the waiters would take turns stopping by, one was extremely friendly, the other one wasn't having his best night. I probably would go back for a special occasion, but it won't be in a hurry. read more

This place is usually TOP NOTCH! I had planned a very special night out with my daughter. Walk around downtown G.R. With the Christmas lights, Tickets to Cirque Du Soleil, ect ... ect ... I had made a reservation (as I always do) I must admit we arrived 5 min late for our reserved table time. And we were seated immediately... 10 min I asked a passing server if we may please have service we have a very short time frame for dinner related to theater tickets .... 20min later I walked back up to the hosts stand and asked if there was a server section? A "few" minutes later a server appeared and asked if she could bring us some water & bread. To make a long story short ... we grabbed our food to go. The shining 5 star of Leo's was a call I received for Miss Elizabeth after leaving very disappointed. Elizabeth is why I'm giving your establishment another 5 star rating. Dinner with a large group, I ordered the walleye which I was told they were out of. Disappointed, I was forced to make a quick menu change to the special and I am quite glad I did! Our server was amazing and handled our large group with ease. Even after she had to deliver the news that they were out of two menu items, she offered suggestions that pleased our dinner guests. Good venue, prices reasonable for the quality and service. Tried the Manhattan clam chowder, great taste but not hot, only warm. Wife had the Lobster bisque. Good size portion, a whole lobster claw, however the bisque was thickened and over whelmed by a brown butter roux. Covered any flavor from the reduced lobster stock and pressed shells. May have been made form any stock. Classic lobster bisque is work intensive and calls for heavy cream and butter to thicken, not a brown butter roux . read more

However, what drags this review down was the complete lack of hospitality and service. Our server was completely lifeless and showed no desire to want to work.
