I was on the hunt for some custom made chocolates, and my search led me to Lepore's. There aren't many specialty chocolate shops like this in the Hoboken / JC area, so I'm really glad that I found this gem. The inside of the shop is pretty teeny, but despite the small interior they can whip up nearly every type of chocolate creation imaginable. The owner is super nice and hilarious. Basically, the exact type of person that I'd expect to run a chocolate shop. He wasn't sure how the custom chocolate would come out, so he told me that he'd be happy to test out a few and would call me with an update if they came out looking kinda funky. Luckily, the custom chocolates came out perfectly! 1.50/chocolate is a tad pricey, but for a great product paired with excellent customer service it was well worth the cost. I don't have too many custom chocolate related needs, but next time I do this will be where I go. However, more often than not I do crave a chocolate covered pretzel...or maybe two. So I have a feeling that I'll be back in again soon! read more

This review is about their food handling & sanitation practices (not their chocolate, which is pretty good). I stopped in one evening to pick up some chocolates and waited until someone could help me (though no one ever did, and I was the only customer in the store). While browsing the selection, the man behind the counter was filling a box with chocolates using his BARE HANDS. Not only did he not wear gloves, but he didn't even bother using parchment paper to pick them up from the display case. At this point I was trying to ignore it because people in food service use their hands from time to time - fine. To gross me out even further, he picked up a bunch of chocolates from a plate to continue packing the box... only to then grab one to put in his mouth. Delightful - so this guy's feeding himself while preparing orders barehanded. A+ for multitasking I guess. As much as I like this convenient chocolate spot, I definitely won't be back. There are tons of flavors in chocolate pieces, as well as chocolate covered nuts, pretzels, etc. The store owner is really nice, and even let me sample a few pieces since I was standing there absolutely overwhelmed by how many flavors there were. Nice of him to do that! I really like how the inside of a lot of the chocolate is just, well, whipped chocolate. I know a lot of the other chocolate places have a lot of fruit filling chocolate, and I abhor that, so this is chocolate at its best. He even had Bailey's Irish creme pieces, which actually turned out pretty good, with the inside being chocolate + Bailey's (of course). If you're a dark chocolate fan, try the Champagne Dark or the Black forest ones. Exquisite. The new location on 4th Street is right off "The Avenue" or Washington Street for the locals and oddly enough, just as tiny as the original location. This place has everything you could ever want in a boutique chocolate shop. A half pound of chocolate will run you $11 before tax and you can get quite the sampler of their amazing offerings. I highly recommend their sea salt caramels in milk chocolate. Their other standouts are the chocolate covered cherries and the Irish Cream truffles. I walk by this place pretty regularly on my way to and from work, and finally decided to stop in today. The selection isn't as large as other chocolate shops I've been to, but they carry all the mainstays and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I also noticed a small selection of sugar-free chocolates, so that's definitely something to keep in mind as well. The chocolate? Delicious! It has that nice, creamy consistency of quality chocolate and doesn't have that chemical flavor so many mass-market produced candies do, and it was all very fresh. It tasted the way I remember my grandma's candy tasting, when she used to buy pounds of fresh chocolate and make her own concoctions of rice crisipies or coconut or peanuts. I picked up a variety of little truffles to share: peanut butter, caramel, raspberry, graham cracker - there's not one dud in the bunch and it was just around $11 for about 10 pieces of chocolate. It's a little bit spendy, but hey, it's a specialty shop.(plus it goes by weight, and the raspberry grahams are pretty dense). Yummy!! We wanted a treat after being rushed a bit in Empire and this was the perfect little spot. After being a bit hungover in the AM and craving a delicious treat, we found this sweet shop. Homemade truffles, chocolate covered chips and yummy dark PB cups abound. This little tiny shop was covered head to toe with Frank Sinatra paraphernalia and the owner was a real gem. I have an intense sweet tooth and a passion for dark chocolate - my favorite item in my sampling was the dark chocolate covered graham cracker / raspberry jam sandwich - omgggg!!! Yum. I went with a mixture of different chocolates in a small box to get as a gift. Didnt find out the price until the man gift wrapped it up for me and rung it up. "Holy smokes!" I thought to myself. Ordered about 2 lbs of chocolate covered fruit from here for a company meeting. For the price, it was well worth it - came on a fancy pants plastic tray. I asked the manager to just keep things assorted, he could mix milk and dark, and go as crazy as he wanted - I work in advertising. They included choco covered grapes, blueberries, dried fruit, bananas, all items you may not have normally rec'd at a big boy shop. Will definitely be returning. Found this place down a side street. I believed they were located somewhere else in town. The inside and outside of the place looks very bland. But the chocolate display looked very nice and they had a good selection to choose from. I found the chocolate to be delicious, and the variety was pretty decent as well. I would say the chocolate they sell is high quality and a bit pricey but well worth the money when you want to splurge on something more than a Hershey's bar.
