Owner chef and his wife as waitress - and two, very comfortable cats (literally there we two cats there) We split the most delightful salad and my friend ordered the rack of lamb and I ordered the pork chop. The food was terrific. I had the signature dish, the "Pescatora," a seafood-fettucini creation, where extra care is taken to prepare the shrimp and scallops which added at the last minute to the pasta. My wife had the Thai curry, and we were both very happy with our meals, which we had driven more than an hour to try. We rode over with the top down, and were a little chilled when we arrived. The owner was quick to pull the plug on the AC, then sat with us while we had our wine and a delicious French Onion soup, with mushrooms, and entertained us with tales of his forty years cooking and bicycling over the back rods of Vermont and New Hampshire. What a gem! One of the most delicious and relaxing meals I've had in the area (Weston, Chester, Manchester). Ahi Tuna app, NY strip, duck, chicken de la casa ( one of the best flavor combinations I've had all year), all delicious. Great Moscow mule cocktails too. Owners were lovely and very interesting. I'm just sorry we've driven by so many times and not stopped because we were rushing to get to our destination. Really nice family dining experience. Will definitely return! Reservation for 6:30 got in early 6:14 didn't get seated until 6:49 drinks not served until 7:09. Multiple tables had been there since 5 pm JUST getting served. Then they seated a table after us and took their food order before even looking our way. The owner literally drank the last of a shot as she made someone's drink and was audibly drunk and slurring as she spoke to customers at the table next to us who sat at the same time and also didn't get their order in. No communication from wait staff on how long of a wait to expect or an apology for the delay and lack of service. Extremely disappointing experience we walked out at 7:20 after being served the wrong wine (red when ordered a Chardonnay) if I could give 0 I would and I am super lenient with wait staff having been a waitress for 8 years read more

Cute small town restaurant. Awesome food. Better wine selection than beer selection but still not very extensive. My wife is a picky eater and doesn't like seafood so we came in thinking she could get the burger but it was not on the menu. There was only 2 other couples there late on a Wednesday night. The cook came out and said he would make it because they were not busy. It took a while for the food because he had to prepare something that wasn't on the menu but it was a great overall experience. A little on the pricier side but fresh food you can't beat. The burger was very good. The vegetable curry that I got was awesome. Would definitely go back myself although my wife thought the service should've been quicker with only 4 other people in the restaurant. Arrived at 7pm, food came out at 7:45PM. We stopped here on our way home to NY with 2 tired and hungry small kids. Very quaint spot and very nice staff. When eating here, you should be in the mindset of a nice, relaxed dinner, which unfortunately wasn't the position we were in. We ordered a kids burger which was delicious and an order of pot stickers for the kids to share. The pot stickers were delicious!! But when ordering for a small child, it's probably best to inform the table that they're covered in sauce. Had we been advised, we would have asked for it on the side, but we didn't think to ask since most dumplings come with sauce on the side to begin with. The ramen, a special was amazing. The chicken was the most tender chicken I've had in a long time. The broth was very flavorful and the noodles cooked perfectly. The menu listed bok choy and Leslie, when ordering, mentioned how packed with vegetables it was. It came out with zero vegetables. After the table devoured the entire dish, I mentioned it to Leslie, but it seemed like she was surprised that I thought there would be vegetables. A little odd, but didn't detract from the dish much. The jambalaya special was also good, but didn't compare to the ramen. The hot bread with pesto for dipping was a nice starter. We were in there for close to an hour and a half - no appetizers nor dessert, so just keep in mind that if you're in a rush, or on a road trip and want to get home, this may not be the spot for you. Enjoyed yet another delicious meal at Leslie's Tavern - this time for my birthday. We have greatly enjoyed this chef-owned, local restaurant for years. The food is always delicious, fresh and seasonal, the owners and staff extremely welcoming and friendly, and the atmosphere cozy, relaxed and leisurely. You never feel rushed when you dine there. I am happy to support this local gem - especially after/during a very stressful period for the restaurant industry. I know that it continues to be extremely difficult to hire and retain staff and the cost for ingredients and restaurant supplies continues to increase. Wow - a total disaster on every level. The table next to us was served a basket of bread after they got their check, another had entrees served to some and others 15 minutes later in their party. When we got there, it was dark out but no one turned on the path lights so elderly patrons were struggling to get down the steps. I had to help a woman while I waited 20 minutes before anyone came to the waiting area to assistant any of the 10 or so also waiting - the line extend to the outside path. After being seated, we waited 20 minutes before anyone came over and that was only because we flagged a waiter down who was, instead, setting other tables. He took our drink order, said he'd be right back, then disappeared for 15 minutes. When we finally got our drinks, raspberry martinis, we were left at the table again. We flagged someone down and placed our order for appetizers and entrees. All we got was bread and, an hour later, we walked out. Blah, blah, blah about being short staffed or other excuses from the owner to other similar negative reviews posted. I assume this review will get the same. There were about half the tables empty when we got horrible service. No excuses when you have so many of the same bad reviews, no matter how long the chef has been a chef. read more

My fiancé and I travel to Vermont often and past this place almost twice. We stopped in on our way back from our trip starving and left full and refreshed. Our customer service was warm and inviting and Leslie gave it a great charismatic charm. Our food was excellent with large portions and garden fresh veggies! Decent food, absolutely terrible service. My girlfriend and I decided to finally go here after passing by such a lovely looking establishment so many times. We were one of only two tables seated when we got there at 4:30 on Saturday. After being seated we had the lovely experience of sitting there staring at each other for nearly 30 minutes before we were even asked if we'd like to order drinks. We insisted on placing the full order right then. We got our drinks at about 5:15, and Leslie brought out a second drink for my girlfriend that she had not ordered. By 5:30 our food still hadn't arrived, and when it finally came i had to request another drink... this didn't come until about 6:15 when I'd gotten impatient enough to ask for the check. In the meantime, we had amazing mushrooms for an appetizer, and a mediocre at best clam chowder. We both ordered the Land Lubbers entree, and I got one scallop, and half a dozen shrimp, my girlfriend got 4 scallops and 1 shrimp. This for $29/ea?!? I've always been the type to enjoy the atmosphere of a restaurant and enjoy some good conversation over drinks. The timing on all of this wouldn't have been much of an issue had I not been staring at empty glasses for an hour while literally no one tended to our table. Then to get a half-assed "meal" just seemed insulting. Before deciding to write this I did see that there are similar reviews, and some bullshit excuses in response by the restaurant chef/owner. So let me break this down for you before the excuses fly. 1. The one other table that was seated when we got there (4:30) didn't get their entrees for almost an hour either. I laughed when I heard the woman comment, "the chef must have a particular vision for our food tonight...". 2. We had a great view of the door. If these people decide to play the "very busy with takeout orders route", I can tell you 100% this isn't the case. 3. I'm pretty sure Leslie was drunk. She was VERY handsy with me, so much so my girlfriend burst out laughing at one point, and even asked me if I wanted to give her my number. She was supposed to be our waiter, but after giving us our drinks, we never saw her again. At all! Not even serving other tables! Where did she disappear to? I honestly don't know what I can possibly say, other than that by looking at other reviews and responses, I don't expect any professionalism from these people. But I want to make it clear that if you're going to blame your staff, you'd better be sure you're not the reason it's going to hell. The chef clearly hacks it, and Leslie can't be a waitress if she disappears into nothingness on Saturday evening! I'll also add a quit bit since the chef seems to love excuses on these other reviews. I travel often and eat out often, I try to stay with local restaurants rather than chains because those guys need the most support, especially in this time. I'm sorry sir, but I could understand your excuses if I've seen this type of poor service even once in other cases. I eat out 3-4 nights a week, and on weekends, and your establishment is the first I've seen with such a monumental reason to just close the doors and call it a good run. From Lui Lui's in NH, to The Lighthouse in Colchester, to Boone's in Portland, ME, staffed or otherwise, they do an amazing job. Your restaurant, absolutely does not. And your not even in a busy area for crying out loud! On Saturday night you had four tables seated by the time we rushed out of there with whatever precious time we had left of our lives, and you still couldn't keep up. If you're going to charge 4-5 star prices, you need to step up your game or close up shop. read more

Let me preface my comments by noting that I never write reviews, but felt compelled to do so in this case. Leslie's food was delicious, but the service was ABYSMAL!! Failed on every level, which was surprising based on prior visits. Not to mention that we didn't get the food we ordered. Despite having a reservation, it took more than 20 mins before drink orders were taken. Another 15 mins before table received water & dinner orders were taken. Another 30 mins before appetizers (soups) were served then approx an hour before dinner was served, except for 1 entree that was completely overlooked (another 20 mins wait). Then it took 30+mins to hail someone to request our bill (table next to us was in the same predicament) and another 15+ mins to get the bill. What should have been a 1 hr outing turned into a 3+ hrs fiasco. Expressed discontent to the co-owner who was not the least bit contrite, chalked up "slow/poor" service to understaffing then threw spouse (the chef) under-the-bus for failure to serve the correct food as well as untimely meal prep...shocking. Didn't even think to comp bill until I mentioned it. Upon departure, the chef personally apologized to us (appreciated) but also failed to understand the importance of servicing in the restaurant biz. We called for a reservation for a party of six and we were seated on time. We were short (2) place settings and and asked for silverware and water. The owner brought one place setting and couldn't figure out we were still one short. She counted several times and left the table. The waiter arrived (15) minutes later and we ordered drinks and meals and asked for the place setting again. The chef came to our table and said they were down a person in the kitchen whom hadn't shown up in a couple of days and it would be a little slow. We were patient and repeatedly asked for updates. The waiter noted it would be the next meal to come out of the kitchen. The owner arrived at our table stating it would be a little longer. We were the second party to arrive for seating in the dining room. A party of three were already seated. The entire night , there were three additional parties, (2) of these were couples and (1) was a party of (4). After waiting (2) hours and an additional (15) minutes for the final meal to be delivered, the food was quite a challenge. (4) in our party were served their entrees one at a time. (2) In the party that ordered steak were served at the same time. Both steaks were ordered without mushroom sauce yet served with mushroom sauce. New steaks were requested and returned. The steaks were delivered again to the table (15) minutes later. The 6th and final entree was delivered a few minutes AFTER the steaks were re-served. It was apparent from the appearance of the steaks, the same steaks were attempted to be rinsed and then re-served. (3) entrees were served with mashed potatoes. (1) entree was served with butternut squash. (1) entree was served with pasta. All were cold like they came out of a refrigerator. We sampled our meals as they arrived. They were not luke warm like one may expect if the food had sat for awhile. The steaks were tough and were not palatable. The food temperatures and quality were discussed with the owner. She sat down at our table and shared how tough things are with the pandemic. Not once did she apologize nor try to resolve the issues. She did note they had a lot of to go orders. We did not see traffic for pick up of take out orders nor do we see bagged or packaged food. It could have been delivered through another entrance were not aware of. It became apparent that she was impaired and it appeared to be from alcohol. We asked to speak to her in the bar area where it was empty with the exception of one person sitting at the bar. We are respectful of others and business and didn't want to do this in front of their customers. We went to the bar area and awaited the owner. She did not come to speak with us so we asked for her again. She eventually arrived and opened with "what"? We walked her through our experience and food issues again and she noted she didn't serve us. We asked her to get our waiter. She brought him into the bar. He was very apologetic and agreed there were significant issues with food and service times. The owners reactions and mannerisms were odd and it appeared she had some impairment. We asked her if she had been drinking. Her hesitation and response indicated this may be the case. We noted this would be reported. She started yelling loudly with expletives along with some unintelligible remarks as she walked back to the dining room. We placed an order to pick up pizza on the way home. We paid $241.00 for our meal at Leslie's. We felt very bad for the situation the waiter was in as we know all need to have an income. We did tip. We also felt bad for the owner as there may be some challenging issues that need to be addressed aside from or perhaps also due to the stress of the pandemic on her business. We read many good past reviews along with a just a few that seemed to mirror our experience. read more

My husband and I went for one of our first date nights out since we moved to Vermont and it being near my birthday and close to my name I said let's try Leslie's! Took 2 days to get a reservation by phone; should have been a warning. Charming place on the outside and in. Waited a good while before being greeted. Already a snafu with waitstaff as someone was being "trained". Seated and waited. Waited. Ordered bottle of wine. Waited. WAITED. We were brought a large basket with the smallest pieces of bread. We audibly laughed out loud. The couple next to us, who were waiting just as long, giggled with us. We actually struck up quite the conversation with them since the wait times were loooooong. Leaf peepers from WI. Finally wine? Nope. We're out of that, pick another. Ummmm, ok. Creepy bread lady refused extra bread to other couple - "that will cost extra." (!!!?!!!?!) Wine came. After another 15 minutes. Noticed we got a fake candle while all others had real candles on the table. The couple grabbed us a nice real candle. We nibbled on the bread like starving squirrels. Waiting. The room did fill in with plenty of seemingly local "white hairs", and the two waitresses, when seen, were fairly busy. The next door couple got their meals. Stone cold. Sent back. 15 minutes later we got ours - and by golly it was actually really good and NOT cold. (At that point anything would have tasted good.) I had the surf and turf and he had the crispy duck.(Thankful for the wine and company too!) The butternut squash was quite delicious. Never got water - I actually got up and found some, even serving the other couple. It was just such a weird near 3 hour existential evening straight out of a comedy. I get it. Busy Saturday, short staffed, miscommunication between the staff and kitchen, etc. but to make folks wait with no explanation and not offer a little more bread? The WI couple got their bill comped I think. We didn't even ask since it was such a memorable evening of a different kind. The tasty food saved it, and our babysitter was free - but we do not plan on going back. If you are in absolutely no hurry and enjoy dining in an old charming house for $$$ then you may dig this place. Chef knows his sh*t. I wish this place well. Highly recommended by a friend who's father had been a regular, we had our first honeymoon dinner here. Nothing else seemed to be open on a Sunday evening anyway... But oh my: Beautiful garden outside, charming decor inside (including a lovely patio) and a delightfully friendly waitstaff headed by Leslie, the owner who turned out to be as warm and wonderful as the food! They cook with as many local ingredients as possible and it was easily tasted in our salads made with veggies from up the road. It seemed their menu may not be fixed, which would make sense for local (therefore seasonal) ingredients, so you may find completely different offerings, but if our experience was any indication, you won't be disappointed! - My new husband, Derek, tried the (house made) Thai curry vegetables with jasmine rice. They accommodated his heat preference and matched it perfectly. - I opted for 2 irresistable-sounding appetizers as my meal: crab cakes with chipotle sauce and wild mushrooms in phyllo. I'm not a crab cake expert but they were pretty damn awesome: wonderful flavor with that melt-in-your-mouth texture that makes you wish there were more than 2, but with a heartiness that makes you thankful there were only 2! The mushrooms were something spectacular... If you're a fungi-phile like me I can only describe it as a little piece of mushroomy heaven wrapped up in a delicate blanket of buttery awesome, then drizzled with nirvana (which turns out to be a balsamic reduction). 8 days later and my mouth still waters at the memory! - Needless to say we both cleaned our plates. As musicians, our only -- and I mean ONLY -- complaint was the music, which seemed to be smooth jazz and Muzak's evil offspring. It was soft enough that I could ignore it, but alas, poor Derek was aural agony :-( Certainly most people would find it a pleasant din if they noticed it at all. Was seated immediately at 6:30pm on a Saturday. Was asked to move to accommodate a reservation and the server threw the seater under the bus. Dinner didn't arrive until after 8pm. "Sorry, the chef is alone and cooks everything to order" was the explanation. It was not that busy. The time between dinners being served was unacceptable. As we waited, we watched multiple tables receive their dinners, eat and pay before getting ours. Even a good high end restaurant can do better than 1.5 hours. The Thai noodle dish I had was tasty but the noodles were undercooked. The mushroom soup was sent back as it was too salty. The service was less than stellar. The second basket of bread we asked for (because the food was so late) never arrived. The kicker was the overwhelming smell of pine from cleaning the tables was quite unpleasant. I'm sure this place would've been nice if... 1) we didn't have to wait 15 minutes to be seated while we saw hostess/waitress take dinner orders from three tables while we waited. please note, we made a 6:00 pm reservation but our name was not on the list. 2) we didn't wait an additional 20 minutes to get hostess/waitress' attention to place an order. 3) the hostess/waitress didn't complain about yelp not removing their 'check-in' offer for a free crab and artichoke dip. she claims that she's tried to have it removed but said 'yelp is one of those companies where no one ever picks up the phone'. we didn't end up staying fearing that we would have to wait a long time for our dinner to come out of the kitchen. But I'm sure this place would've been nice if they hired additional staff to create a better experience for it's guests. From all the other reviews it sounds like the food is delicious. They have a special $15 menu on Sundays. Would've loved to try their Peruvian chicken wings, they claim its the BEST! read more

Stopped here for dinner on a Thursday night, just passing through during a snowstorm. The ambiance was great, the restaurant is a typical farmhouse style in a New England town. The service was really good, our waiter was excellent. That being said, the food was not. The warm bread that came out was tasty, and the pesto butter was arguably the best part of the meal despite the butter being cold and unspreadable. We ordered the pepperoni flatbread as an app. We were shocked when it came out just swimming in oil. You could pick up a piece and watch the grease drip off. My husband ordered the beef tips with garlic mashed potatoes. I ordered the braised duck. The meals came out at the same time, however were room temp at best. His beef was so rare it was barely cooked. Even that would have been okay, but the beef smelled and tasted of lighter fluid or white gas. It had an overwhelming smell. Not sure if it was the beef or the sauce, but it was terrible. His garlic mashed potatoes had no garlic, nor were they mashed. It was one boiled potato cut in half, with almost no taste. The green beans were done very well however. The braised duck was tough, and didn't have much meat at all, however the green beans and braised veggies were good. We thought the prices were very high for the quality of the food. Also, they use an iPad to run credit cards. That's fine up til the server brings it to your table so you can punch in the tip amount with them standing over your shoulder. My husband and I had reservations here for a special birthday dinner this evening. We should have walked out the door the moment we walked in. The waitress looked at us with a look on her face wondering why we were there. The waitress and service was horrible and the chef kept coming out of the kitchen with every excuse he could think of!! The waitress asked us how everything was and we hadn't had anything yet. 11/2 hours for an appetizer that was lukewarm and 21/2 hours to get our dinner entrees and those were cold. I can see why the party beside us walked out. We will not be back and definitely won't recommend this establishment to anyone!!! You being short staffed is not the guest problem!! What a wonderful representation of New England fare! Loved, loved, loved the food. Our party ordered sirloin tips - wonderful, scallops - delicious, chicken in parmesan sauce - to die for, crab cakes - another hit. Our wait-staff was attentive and helpful. Wine was very tasty. Leslie has a primo chef in the kitchen. We ate inside the tavern and felt like we were steeped in New England right from the start. Can't wait to go back! By the way, couldn't finish my chicken but the leftovers the next day were nearly as good as the previous night. Kudo's to Leslie, the staff, the chef! The price? - worth every penny of a reasonably priced dinner. My only disappointment is that I don't live near enough to visit frequently. Where's the picture? - We couldn't wait to dive in. What a charming treat! I haven't spent much time in Vermont, but this place is undoubtedly a true treasure. The restaurant is owned by a very hospitable husband and wife team who go above and beyond to make your experience the best it can be. The interior is charming, and the building itself was constructed in the 1700s (history buffs take note!). Everything on the menu looks amazing, and it changes frequently. The restaurant also comes stocked with several wines and beers, including a lot of local fare. We were brought warm bread with a homemade butter spread to start. For an appetizer I got the crab cakes, served with a sweet chili sauce - seriously delicious and a combination I hadn't tried before. For my entree, I chose the Vermont beef sirloin steak, served with two sauces, assorted veggies, and mashed potatoes. The chef knows his stuff; everything was cooked with skill and tasted wonderful. Everything served here is also very local - you can't go wrong with that. I wish I could try everything on the menu, but I guess that means I'll have to make sure to come back. read more

The food selection is not huge, but what they offer is great. We had the vegetarian special and the crab cakes, they were both great. My dad and I came here a few nights ago, and I had one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The mushroom soup was amazing: full rich mushroom flavor (without being too earthy), strikingly fresh herbs, and perfect consistency. The owners have their own herb garden, and it has really paid off. The pork tenderloin saltimbocca was mindbogglingly good--lovely mild melted cheese and again the fresh herbs (in this particular dish a lot of sage, I believe). We pull up to Leslie's and both look at each other with a face that says, "Hmmm, is this the right place?" Being city folk that have never been out to dinner in Vermont, we were a bit hesitant walking into Leslie's given that it just looks like any old New England Bed & Breakfast. I was immediately put at ease when we checked in with the hostess...Leslie. Leslie is awesome. Entering the dining room/home, we knew we had made a great call. Think quaint, cozy, country with a great mix of locals and out-of-towners. The food (i.e. the most important thing) was worth the stop: - perfectly warm crisp bread (A) - better than most steakhouses - Harlowe Green Salad (A) - some of the freshest lettuce we've ever had (Leslie sources locally daily) - Crab Cakes (A) somehow blew away anything I've had in MD (strong statement - I understand) - Flat Bread Pizza (B+) Pesto/Mozz was exactly what you'd expect. Nothing special, but good - Scallops w/ Butternut Squash Ravioli (C+) This was the only thing I had that was off - Scallops were slightly undercooked even for seared scallops and the ravioli didn't help - Boston Creme Pie (A+) homemade by Leslie (like almost all her desserts) and truly exceptional. Meghan and the entire staff provided great service with a real family feel to it. This is a true family owned and operated biz. It was wonderful. Did not have our reservation but we sat down with table of 5 no problem. Reservation was at 5:30 and we are leaving at 8:30. Duck was good, overcooked. Filet was cooked perfect! Stirfry yum! Wine and desserts were wonderful. Took awhile for check but all worth it in the end! read more

From Leslie to Leslie : this place is a gem. We stopped by on a Sunday night for dinner. Leslie is a great host and the food was outstanding which I didn't have time to take a picture of, but we had lomo saltado and the sea food pene pasta. For desert we had the créeme burle and some coffee. We will be back ! read more

We had a great meal here. Everything is made from scratch so if you're in a hurry then don't bother, but if you want to sit, savor and enjoy a marvelous ambiance then this is the place. The chef has serious skill... Duck was gently cooked with a great gentle blood orange glaze, and the lamb rack was outstanding, cooked exactly as ordered with a mustard breading. I had read on here that the checkout process with the square reader on the iPad was awkward, but that was not our experience. Yes they use the iPad but they didn't stand over us. It is actually quite convenient and doesn't kill trees. The wait staff was kind and genuinely seemed like they wanted you to have a great meal and a fun time. All-around good restaurant where everything is done "the right way," and we will be back when we're in the area. read more
