Ask the Community - Lester Machado, MD DDS

I have been seeing Dr Machado to have an implant. He does great work. I am not happy with my referring dentist. Is there a good dentist in the Mission Hills, Hillcrest area that you would recommend for the actual crown?

Absolutely incredible patient care !…read more My 93 year old mother had resisted extraction of an infected tooth for almost 2 years....as fortunately it was draining and amazingly didn't cause her any discomfort or sickness. But at last week's periodic dental appointment her luck ran out and immediate removal was ordered. However her regular dental office could not give her a Periodontist consultation until almost TWO months.....and after that ( in middle of the holidays) who knows when they'd schedule the actual extraction?? In this case of a really senior citizen I saw a possible matter of Life and death if infection spread to her sinuses or eventual septicemia. Fortunately her clinic gave me phone references of some oral surgery clinics. The first one I called didn't treat patients over 85. BUT we were SO fortunate that the Center for Oral and Facial Surgery offered her an immediate appointment !! Literally I called about 1 pm Friday and they offered mom a spot at 930 the following Monday!!!!! And this wasn't just a pre- operative consultation...but the actual extraction. Her luck continued getting DR. TAYLOR.... young, sharp and current with modern dental practices. He also handled mom really well psychologically to adjust his technique when she refused sedation at the last minute to only want local lidocaine numbing. In total the procedure took about 20 minutes! And I felt the pricing was very reasonable for the HIGH QUALITY of Dr Taylor's EXCELLENT care. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this excellent practice!

I asked him this morning to please loosen the rubber band on my right arm and so he refused to finish my oral surgery or give me anesthesia and asked me to get up and leave. This is so unprofessional. Not only was he rude to me, so was his staff. The dental assistants had attitudes and pushed me down into my seat. Also the dentist sexually harassed me when he picked up the television controller off my lap by pushing his hands towards my vagina area. He also yelled and screamed at me to shut up and get out of his dental office. I am a certified nursing assistant, and none of the nurses or me have ever treated a patient that way, whether on medi-cal or on regular insurance. Dr. Steven's actions at park blvd oral surgery is patient abuse and will not be tolerated. Me as a single mother of two children am disgusted with this dentist and refuse to go back to allow him to try to ruin my teeth or abuse me again. He's unprofessional and obviously uneducated in his field of work. I work full time as a CNA at a healthcare center and I pay taxes for dentist who take medi-cal or medi-care so he should have more respect and stop abusing the patients who are low-income thinking he is getting away with it. I'm a mandated reporter also.

Had to call special number at Medical/Dentical to disenroll in any insurances other than Medicare/Medicaid. By the time I did that, The day before I was to have all my teeth removed (for dentures), I found out Medicare and Medicaid put me back on Molina so my procedure would not be covered. Aaaargh. Answer: Had to call medical/Dentical AGAIN and get disenrolled AGAIN. By then Park Oral Surgery had cancelled my appointment. "Fit me in" the next day when disenrollment was confirmed. That meant going at 8:30 a.m. No drink, no food. Waited til 2 p.m. to have surgery. What a f"ing nightmare. So it happened, but I cannot believe other's with less business savvy can follow this stuff.

Over that time, Dr. Brian Mananquil and the entire Bella Vita Dental team have consistently gone above and beyond to make sure every concern I've had was addressed with patience, transparency, and genuine care. My treatment has been pretty extensive, to say the least. Dr. Brian has handled everything from implants and sinus lifts to numerous rounds of Invisalign and refinements, along with all of my general fillings, crowns, and other dental work. You name it--I've probably had to get it done; my teeth needed the whole kitchen sink. Throughout the entire process, he has always taken the time to clearly explain my options, answer every question I had, and make adjustments whenever I wanted to explore different approaches. I never once felt rushed or dismissed, which is incredibly important when you're making decisions about major dental work. What stands out most is how accommodating and patient he has been. Even when I've been very detail-oriented about my results, he's always been willing to work with me to get things exactly right. That level of commitment and professionalism is rare. The office is also consistently well-run, the staff is friendly and organized, and appointments are handled smoothly. If you're looking for a dentist or orthodontist who is skilled, thoughtful, and truly invested in achieving the best outcome for their patients, I can't recommend Dr. Brian enough. After five years of complex treatment, I'm extremely grateful I chose this practice.

At my last cleaning, I was repeatedly pushed toward a deep cleaning I didn't want or need. It took three firm "no" responses before the receptionist finally dropped it. I went into my most recent appointment already hesitant, and to no surprise, the same thing happened again. This time, I confronted them about it and ultimately walked out without receiving the cleaning I scheduled. Their entire process seems to have been reversed. What used to be: X-rays cleaning recommendations has become: X-rays gum measurements a sales pitch for $3,000+ worth of treatment pressure to commit before receiving the service you came in for. After I told the receptionist I simply wanted the cleaning I had scheduled, the hygienist came in and immediately asked, "What's your hesitation?" That felt less like patient care and more like a sales tactic. When I voluntarily schedule and pay for a dental appointment, I expect to receive the service I came for - not a high-pressure sales pitch. I will not be returning, and I will not be recommending Bella Vita. What was once a practice with great service and kind people now feels more like a dental dealership focused on upselling before patient care. It's a shame. You had something good, and you squandered it.
