I had such a special memory here of my Grandmother buying me a gold necklace and gold earrings. The man who helped us was very kind. However he told us that the jewlery was Solid Gold. My Grandmother does not have a lot of money and she saved up money to buy me a special gift for my Birthday. She spent over $350.00 for the earrings and necklace. I mainly wore the necklace, and after a while it looked dirty. I went to a jewlery shop to get it cleaned. It turns out it was Not solid gold. Don't buy any jewelry here! read more

This place is a true scam. Over priced and sells BROKEN AND DAMAGED PRODUCTS. We drove in for the day and decided to stop at this "cute" grungy antique store. We browsed the store and saw sterling silver salt cellars. My mother liked them so we spent $80 on these two salt cellars. When we got home to clean them they were chipped, the sterling silver covered the damages. We live 2 hours away so we can't return them. BUYER BEWARE. The lady kept rushing us and everything we asked to look at in the display she would put back away before we could make a decision. That's should've been the first warning sign. Examine everything carefully, if you're being rushed just leave. Lesson learned. read more

I wanted to like this store, had only been by when it was closed, and had admired some of the blue and white Chinese lamps, similar to those I'd lost when my home burned in the Palisades Fire. This past Sunday, though, I was just looking for some gift tea towels, of which they have a few and they are well-priced. Then, at the counter, I noticed the silver flatware in their case. When I asked the woman about the items, her response was so sharp and challenging, like she'd had to explain the merchandise so many times before she really couldn't be bothered to do so again. For my part, I was looking to replace the full set of wedding silverware, plus some ancestral pieces, we lost in the fire. On top of all that, we were that day celebrating our 41st wedding anniversary. I'm not a fan of shopping, we have a lot of beloved items to replace from the fire, and this woman's attitude was a real gut punch. I didn't continue the conversation beyond a direct gaze and a "right," before paying for my goods and getting out of there. And, as others have mentioned, they do seem to favor locals, the other woman running the shop that day stood nearby catching up with all the comings and goings chit chat of a couple she apparently knew well. Boy, did I feel like an outsider and boy did it help me to miss our home and Palisades community all the more. I only mention any of this because what I've discovered as I deal with pain in my life is that you never know what is going on with others. Because of that, it's best to make kindness your default mode. At least that's what I try to do. But regarding this store filled with charming goods, the irony is a staff totally lacking in it. We won't be returning for further helpings of their bad attitude. read more

Lewis & Clark has historic, unique, charming, beautiful, and hard to find small items. I was thrilled to find a huge selection of whimsical, delicately hand made, hand painted German woodcarved Christmas minature figures and animals. Also among many other items, they have a huge assortment of silver charms for charm bracelets. I share their love for nostalgia and things of the heart. Lewis & Clark is the best gift shop in Southern California. I don't live close by, but I will visit more often in the future. read more

Now, during social distancing, I've been bowled over by the customer service: I've ordered a few ASTONISHINGLY reasonably priced and totally unique pieces of costume jewelry, have asked and had questions answered swiftly over their Instagram page, they quickly issued me a refund when they accidentally charged too much shipping, and the pieces could not have been more beautifully, carefully, and safely wrapped for shipping. They gave me such joy to receive, to give as gifts, and to wear literally every single day. The owner has a curator's eye. I hope they stay in business for a million years! Here's the Deal... I'm the kind of shopper that haunts used book stores, thrift stores, and antique shops. New-stuff retail makes me uneasy, and sometimes queasy... unless I'm at a place like Lewis and Clark. Some of my favorite afternoons have been spent slowly perusing the nooks of this special store with my wife, listening to the delightful "click" of the red brick floors. Their taste is impeccable, their displays are pure holiday magic, and the lovely ladies who work there are helpful without hovering. It's as if they have the eye for the kind of thing that will end up in an antique store years from now after spending many years as a cherished part of your family's celebrations. They also give proof that "repro" doesn't have to be a four-letter word. (Okay... I know it's a five-letter word, but you know what I mean!). I was ready to buy something (money burning in my pocket)- looking for anything silver... saw the shop and was excited to see the items. After the "friendly" counter woman spoke so warmly to her friends and folks she knew... she turned to me and quickly asked what I wanted - it was said with a resounding burden in her voice. Stunned I asked to see the silver pots and other items... she looked at me and quickly took out 1 of the three items I asked for and said I don't think I can help you and you should look somewhere else. She wouldn't even let me see the other items I asked for. I already waited a while for her to finish with other people and she quickly took away the item and looked at me as if to say go away. I had not felt this kind of racism in a long a time. The woman that was behind the counter was old perhaps in her late late 60's, she is 5-6", blonde white hair etc .... me I am a tall Hawaiian woman... to her I was just not white enough or something. Completely disappointed in this shop and walked away very upset. Later on the management emailed me... but no real outcome of it. I am still upset that in Santa Barbara such blatant racism is still prevalent. smh They had nice things... but don't waste your time and put your money to use elsewhere. read more

Fun, attractive, tasteful items which are hard to resist. That's why I go back. Staff can be helpful if you jolly them. They always act, initially, as if you are interrupting them. Please, unwrap inventory and do those kinds of things when there isn't a customer standing at the counter waiting to be addressed. Tiresome. Yesterday I asked for something they didn't carry but was similar to other items and was dismissed with a head turn: "we wouldn't get it." Sigh. What about "Perhaps we can show you something else?" I have always enjoyed coming here, especially around the holidays. Visiting at Christmas time is a tradition for my Mom and I, and it is always fun to see their super enchanting holiday displays. The store is beautiful, and I really like the taste of the owner in selecting which items to carry. You'll find an excellent selection of ornaments, some good casual jewelry, and a range of gift items. I frequently get charms for my mother-in-law's bracelet here, and have found the selection to be very good and frequently changing. Prices vary, with a good range of affordable as well as more expensive gifts. My experiences with the owner and staff have always been positive. I see a couple of reviews mention a lack of outreach from the sales staff, but personally I like that they aren't pushy and prefer to wander around and explore first. Whenever I'm in Santa Barbara, which, sadly, isn't very often, I *have to* set aside an hour to browse this store. It is a feast for the eyes. I have been to SB's other vintage/antique stores, and they are like most others: musty, cluttered, disorganized, and mostly full of junk. I usually walk in the door, scan the room, realize that I can't stand being in there because the disarray is overwhelming, and then leave. Lewis & Clark, on the other hand -- I could LIVE in that store. It's just so organized and inviting! Everything is displayed beautifully, and with obvious thought behind it. The way the store is laid out, it makes me want to move from one area to the next, and look at every single wonderful thing. It's a mix of new and vintage. But even the new stuff has a beautiful vintage look/feel to it. It's a fantastic place to visit if you're looking for a unique, reasonably-priced gift. It makes me sad to read that other reviewers have felt snubbed in this store. I have not experienced that in the few times that I've been here, but c'mon, ladies, be nice to your customers! read more
