Brisket (Chopped), Pulled Pork, Pork Spare Ribs, Sausage, collards, pickles

Finally got to Lewis BBQ! Went in on a Wednesday night around 7:30. We found street parking about a block away. The parking lot is not very big. There was a line but it moved fairly quickly. Maybe 20 minutes. Food is ordered at the counter and your tray of loveliness is prepared right before your eyes. You order meats first then move down to another person who does the sides. Very efficient process. See my pic, I got a variety of meats and they were all excellent - chopped brisket, pulled pork, spare ribs and a Green Chile cheddar sausage. One knock - I wish they had more vegetable sides. I got the collards. They were very good. Highly recommend!!

Lewis's was amazing barbecue right in the heart of Charleston. Honestly, it was definitely not what I expected to find in the middle of such a tourist-centered area. The ordering process is a little hectic as you work your way toward the counter, but the server waiting at the end was incredibly helpful and offered some great suggestions for our party of six. The brisket and ribs were phenomenal, and there were plenty of sauce options to satisfy everyone. And the fries? Cooked in tallow. Everyone knows that's the best way to make a fry! We sat outside, and as a family visiting from Wisconsin, why wouldn't we take advantage of every outdoor dining opportunity we can get? Lewis's is definitely a get-your-fingers-dirty kind of barbecue experience, and that's exactly how it should be. Great food, good atmosphere, and a place I'd definitely consider visiting again

The brisket here is as good as any I've tasted outside of Texas. Top three now consists of Lewis BBQ, Little Miss BBQ (Phoenix), and the recently closed Horn BBq (Oakland). Beef is super tender with a spicy /peppery bark. Just perfect. Lewis considers itself a Texas-style joint, but don't sleep on the pull pork, which was also incredible. Fantastic sauces, top (special shout out to you, Mustard sauce). Add in friendly staff and fair prices and its a total must visit.

Pork ribs, brisket, mac n cheese, coleslaw, potato salad & sweet tea. We in the south yall!!

Line was long but it moved super fast. They don't offer combos or dinners, everything is ordered individually, and it adds up FAST but it qas soo worth it! I'm not a big bbq fan, we were here for my husband, but I must admit I enjoyed EVERYTHING, I think this was the best bbq I've ever had st s restaurant! The drinks & utensils are self serve, but the staff taking your order at the counter were very friendly & knowledgeable. We will definitely return when we're visiting Charleston.

We stopped in, as we've done every time we've come to Charleston. Since we found out about Louis's, this time we ordered a half a pound of the brisket. The young lady who took our order educated us on the lean versus the fatty. We went with middle of the road. She gave us samples, and it definitely sold us on it. We ordered a side of fries along with the side of queso. We split the plate, and it's really, really good. Definitely enough food for the two of us. It was nice and tender. Fries were nice and crisp. The queso cheese sauce really took it over the top. The brisket didn't need the barbecue sauce, but it was a good complement to it. The line wasn't out the door, which was good for us. Got in, got our order, and found us a table. Nice clean atmosphere and great staff, as always. I'm definitely going to give it a 4 out of 5. The only thing that would have taken it to a 5 out of 5 is if the bark on the brisket had a little bit more flavor, with a little bit less salt to it. Other than that, it was an amazing meal.

We got here just after opening on a Sunday during the summer while visiting some friends - we walked RIGHT up to the counter, hardly 5 seconds wait; service was fantastic they got us our meal VERY fast. Originally we sat outside (they have small fans on the tables for the flies but honestly we didn't need them). Then the husbands found seats inside the AC. It was a little loud inside but definitely good vibes - the kids loved it here. For two small families (4 adults 2 kids) we ordered 1.5 lbs brisket, 1.5lbs turkey, 1.5 of the ribs (which were our favorite!! Fall OFF THE BONE and beautifully seasoned) and 1/2 pound of the chopped up brisket. Personally I loved the brisket the best - great flavor and the perfect mix of lean to moist ratio. There was someone walking around asking us how our meals were and cleaning the tables (which isn't out of the ordinary) but I especially liked that he picked up the floor after a family of 4 that was quite messy - and he did it with a smile on his face! THATS A WIN!!! I love employees who love their job Only concern we had *giggles* was after my friends found out I was a yelper, they asked me to include that they would like a handle on the to-go bags. DONT FORGET to try the sweet tea!!

By far some of the best bbq that we've tasted . the brisket and pulled pork were fantastic! Fun place will def go back!

Some of the best BBQ I've ever had. The brisket was absolutely incredible--tender, smoky, and packed with flavor. Everything was quick and easy to order, even with how busy the place was. The sides were great too, but the brisket was easily the star. If you're in Charleston and love BBQ, Lewis is a must. I'd absolutely come back.

Great spot. Visiting from our of town, came across it on YELP. Plenty of parking in lot along with street parking. Seating both inside and out. Some of the best BBQ I have eaten... ordered Brisket, Brisket Sandwich, greens, mac & cheese and beans....all items had great flavor... All of the staff was friendly and professional.

    Delicious!

Went with a group of four for lunch. The folks I was with are long time residents and they chose without consulting me. Lol, they know good food! It was just after 12 noon and by some miracle we only stood in line about ten minutes. The rush came in shortly after although I will say they handle the crowds beautifully. When it comes to barbecue, I am a pulled pork girl and I have lived in Texas! I don't hate on brisket, but none of it has bowled me over. Until today. Once again, I wasn't ordering so I just went with the flow. That chopped brisket sandwich was so moist and full of flavor that it did not need a DROP of barbecue sauce. I did use the sauce to dip my fries in. I don't often eat macaroni and cheese although I do love it ( my hips don't!) but I had to try it or risk the wrath of my lunch companions. It was delicious! The best I have had in a restaurant. Collards were fresh and tasty. I enjoyed the rustic setting and certainly the company. They can choose dining spots for me anytime!

Prime Beef Brisket, Pork Spare Ribs, Sausage, Cowboy Pinto Beans with Pico on top, Tangy Coleslaw with some onions and pickles on the side.

I'm still craving the Brisket after a week. First time going, I will definitely be back with family and friends. Such great spot- causal and family friendly. Different places to sit, inside or outside. This is a popular spot, I was surprised at how busy it got on a Monday at 1pm. The food truly is amazing, and the sauces you can add enhance the flavors!

We planned all of our dinner reservations for our Charleston foodie trip, so I let my husband pick where we went for lunches. He chose Lewis Barbecue, and while I'm not usually a huge BBQ person, this might be the best BBQ I've ever had. It's a Bib Gourmand-rated spot, and I can definitely see why. The service at the carving counter was great, and all of the sides were so good. I especially loved the mac and cheese, and the potato salad was absolutely bomb--creamy, a little tangy, and one of my favorite things we ordered. The free pickles were also a nice touch. The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the ribs practically fell off the bone. Everything was flavorful without feeling too heavy. I honestly wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but this ended up being one of my favorite lunches of the trip. I'd definitely come back the next time I'm in Charleston.

    Amber S.

Meh, I don't get the hype. Parking is terrible and food is just not great. The pulled pork tastes like it's been soaked in vinegar, collard greens were way too sweet and potato salad was unremarkable. The sliced brisket and Mac and cheese were good. More than half of our food was leftover and I had no desire to take anything with us. Skip.

Ask the Community - Lewis Barbecue

    Does Lewis sell hash?

I believe pork hash, but not hash and rice.

What time in the evening is less crowded to go?

The earlier you get there, the better! I'd say maybe the weekdays are a little less crowded, but I'd try to get there by at least 5-5:30.

Can you order 1/2 pounds of Desired meat?

    Yes

Any advice on ordering takeout for 13 people? Also, would you recommend either banana pudding or dirt pie? Or leave them off? Is the tea good and strong or weak?

They will definitely quise you on quantity for the number of people you're ordering for. Don't miss the fatty brisket or the turkey. I've only had the dirt and it was good but when I think about Lewis, I don't think dessert. Would b a nice sweet…

Will I smell like the food or the smoker when I leave?

Depends on whether or not you're seating outside *and* they're currently smoking anything while you're there. If both are true, then you'll definitely leave smelling like smoke, because it wafts around the entire outdoor seating area.

Does anyone have tips about ordering takeout for a family of 6 on thanksgiving day, 11/25/2021? Is it recommended that I place an online order days or weeks in advance...?

You do need to place your order well in advance, but you won't be disappointed with your Thanksgiving dinner from Lewis. My parents came into town last year and this is what I served them on Thanksgiving. They still talk about the delicious food we…

    Are dogs allowed?

    Yes, but only outside.

Is the beer while you wait, complimentary?

Ha! Good one. No, it's not free, but if you enjoy local craft beer, you are in luck.

What time do meats typically start running out? Coming in around 7pm on a Thursday in a few weeks.

They don't. The only thing that goes quick is whatever the daily specials are. Everything else will be available

    Is this a pet-friendly shop?

We ate inside and there were no pets inside. I am not sure if they are allowed at the outside seating area.

Heard about the Tuesday smoked fried chicken. How are they?

I have not got to try it yet, but I do know it sells out!

What time do they usually sell out on a weekday? We'd def want brisket and ribs, but can't get there until closer to ~1pm. Thanks.

You'll be fine. Beef ribs on Saturday last until 4pm

I noticed some meeting places as well with transparent walls good for community gatherings. Some notable places I've seen are The Sanctuary, DandiLion wax studio, and the Charleston Wellness Studio. Upon reading another Yelp review I loved they offer a venue space as well which would be great for showers or weddings perhaps! Something to look into. Another wonderful addition to the Schoolhouse is the picturesque garden next door. Enjoyed the flowers and greenery before embarking on my next task. Very peaceful space.

The Schoolhouse is a fairly new event center, I believe it has been about a year? More or less,…read morecould be wrong. At any rate, we were looking for a spot to hold our mom's 70th birthday surprise party. We were struggling with finding availability on a Saturday afternoon - church reception halls were booked, other venues were booked, and then other venues just wanted to charge too much for a birthday party (charging us Charleston wedding prices!!). The Schoolhouse actually did not come up in our search, but was recommended to my sister. My sister immediately contacted the Schoolhouse to check availability. They have a couple different rooms that are rentable, depending on size. We didn't need anything too big, so we were able to rent out the Music Room. Small room good for 30-40 people. They supply the chairs/tables with the rental. On the day of, Heather was there to meet us, and gave me her number in case we had any questions. I will say, the only issue was that there was another group that had a function going on in the next room and they had come in and taken one of our tables. So we had to take it back! Not a big issue, since Heather took charge, but it just seems like people don't understand that multiple events can go on. That is the biggest issue that I see with this space, is that people don't understand that multiple events can go on. Obviously, if you are the one renting it, then you know it, but your guests do not. So as we were setting up, we had the doors open so that we could bring stuff in from the cars. Well there were some random people that just walked into and through our room. Do you not see us setting up? Then eventually two people came in and were on the floor giving massages (what in the world??) - not sure if they were tenants or from the other party. Again, do you not see us setting up? We told them we had this space reserved, and they were willing to leave. Then I guess the party next door did not bring enough supplies, coming in and asking us for cups. No, we bought these for our party. I wouldn't say this is a fault to the event center, but a fault to guests/other people renting, to give other people common courtesy. We did end up closing all doors once we got everything inside from all of the cars, and had no other issues. My only suggestion would be to maybe have signs in place by the rental facility showing that "this room is privately reserved today, please do not enter". During the actual party with the room filled, it did get very warm. It was at least a cool night so that we opened the door to the outside to let cool air in. I'm not sure if we knew how to adjust the temperature or if we could adjust it, but that was our means of just letting the building be and letting cool air in. Also, there is ample parking in front and in back of the building. So your guests do not have to worry about having to park and walk or to pay for parking. Overall, I would definitely recommend this space for a party - reasonably priced, with a great setup on how much space you actually need.

The nice amenities, decent gym and friendly staff are what creates the environment for a pleasant experience. Two of these were met and the friendly staff, was mostly there. . .but one sour apple truly changed the course of our stay. Even my wife, who worked once upon a time in hospitality at Kiawah Resort, was started by the interactions from The Loutrel Hotel staff member. Long story short. The daily complimentary breakfast was served. I accidentally went to place the granola lid on the yogurt, my wife told me that was the wrong lid and I went to correct. From across the room the breakfast attendant yelled, "sir that doesn't go there." Startled, I immediately removed it and placed it accordingly. I laughed it off. Moments later I went to sit my breakfast down where my drink was located. Same attendant, "you're not even sitting at the right table with your wife." Again, my error, but don't call me out twice in one morning. It's a small lobby, so many staff members overheard the interaction. Nothing was done by other management. The next morning, I walked down to look at breakfast. I saw the same attendant and said, good morning. She looked at me but wasn't pleasant in her response. Unlike the rest of her colleagues at the restaurant who are polite and kind, the same customer service I expect and provide to my customers. Breakfast offered salmon with some type of eggs or shellfish. I can't eat shellfish, allergic. So, I went to grab a biscuit at a local coffee shop and a coffee. We came back to the hotel and sat our food down. The same rude attendant came over, nudged my wife in her back and said, "you can't have this here, cross contamination." So, I left. Allowed my wife to eat her yogurt in the area. Funny enough, my wife asked where the utensils were, because every table had them. Same attendant rudely, pointed to another table for her to get them. I should have just sat down and ate my food as I didn't see any signs for "no outside food." Either way, stay somewhere else. It's unfortunate that a hotel like this allows such rudeness from a staff member. I did report this to the manager, and online but was met with more passivity. Comped two nights of valet. Honestly, it wasn't enough. I would never stay here again and it ended the trip on such a sour note.
